Thank you to Netgalley, Harper Collins UK and RJ Parker for an advance copy in exchange for an honest review.
Leah Talbot is on her way home one evening when she hits a deer with her car. Alone, on a deserted road, in an undrivable car with a dead cell phone, she decides to walk to a nearby house for help. Martin Tate, a kind, charming man invites her in out of the rain and lets her use his telephone.
The next morning Leah goes back with a bottle of wine to thank Martin for his help, and instead she finds police everywhere. Along with the dead body of the owner Alice Booth. The man she met the night before is a murderer.
The overall plot of this book is fantastic. The story feels very different from everything I've read before. It's a fast-paced, chilling thriller that kept me turning the pages long into the night just so I could see what came next.
The story is told in a dual narrative from the perspectives of Martin and Leah. Martin is probably my favorite character in the book. I spent the majority of the book trying to figure out if he was trying to set Leah up or trying to win her heart in some twisted way. I didn't really care that much for the other characters so much. I loved the strength that Leah displayed, but I just can't abide by some of her decisions. I hated Leah's relationship with her husband. Their behaviors don't ring quite true.
Overall, I enjoyed this book. I would recommend The Good Neighbor to fans of thrillers, psychological suspense, general fiction and women's fiction.
WOW! What a creepy, intense, chill of the spine thriller this was! I highly recommend The Good Neighbour to any thriller genre fans or someone who wants to read about a worst nightmare coming true. Talk about a cat and mouse plot! I loved it!
This was a great read. It was very griping & I read it all in a few hours! Slightly predictable ending but overall a great read
This book was such a quick read for me. Why? Because, its so good you just keep turning the pages until you've finished.
Leah Talbot is driving home late one night. A deer runs out and she hits it. The deer is dead. Her car needs towing and she's covered in the animals blood. To top it all the battery on her phone is dead.
She walks to a local house to raise help. Tate answers the door. He's charming and helps he out. The next day she goes to take a thank you gift to him. However, the police are at the house. The homeowner is dead and she met the killer.
Is she safe or is she next on his list?
Many thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read this arc.
A fast-paced page turner! Leah hits a deer and her phone is dead so she goes to the closest house she can find to use their phone. She meets Martin, who makes her feel unsettled. When she goes back to thank him it's revealed that someone was murdered and Martin in fact was not the homeowner as she thought.
Thanks Netgalley and the publisher for the advance ecopy.
There should be a warning on the book, “Do not start reading until you have a long stretch of time to read. And DO NOT read late at night!” This book pulled me in right away. We meet Leah, whose car hits a deer. She knocks on Martin Tate’s door and the story begins. I like how the author goes from telling the story from Leah’s point of view and then Martin’s. I did not want to put it down and the ending was satisfying!
I received a complimentary copy of this book from Harper Collins UK through NetGalley. The opinions expressed in this review are entirely my own.
I loved this book!!! Terrifying and chilling at points! It plays on all your worst fears but in the best way possible. Would definitely recommend.
I was really looking forward to reading The Good Neighbour and it started off really well and grabbed my attention but as I got further into the story it just got a little too far fetched for my liking. I finished it and overall thought it was an ok read.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for my ARC.
Many thanks to Netgalley, Harper Collins UK, and One More Chapter for an ARC of this book in exchange for a honest review.
While driving in the middle of the night Leah ends up hitting a deer on a deserted road. After the accident her car won't start and her cell phone is dead. Shaken and panicked, Leah knows she needs to find help. She walks to the nearest house with lights on and is invited in by a charming and helpful man named Martin. He lets Leah use his phone and clean herself up until help arrives.
The next day Leah goes back to thank Martin, but when she arrives there are police at the house. Leah is also informed that the owner of the house, Alice was murdered the previous night. On top of that, Martin is nowhere to be found.
The Good Neighbour starts off very strong with gripping suspense right off the bat. This book had me glued to my seat. The villain was calculated, manipulative and creepy. I did question some of Leah's decisions, but I find myself doing that in many thrillers. In the middle of the book the suspense slowed, but it frantically picked up speed for the end. Overall, this was a good thriller!
Leah hits a deer and looks for help in a home nearby. When charmer Martin answers the door Leah becomes curious, entranced and grateful to this handsome stranger. When Leah returns to the home the next day with a gift for her gratitude she finds the police who tell her that the homeowner has been murdered. She’s shocked to find that the homeowner was a single occupant and a WOMAN. So who is Martin Tate and what was he doing in that house?
I felt this storyline fell flat and I honestly got bored and found it hard to keep going to the end. At times the story is very violent and uncomfortable. The story held my interest enough to finish but I was disappointed overall.
Thank you to NetGalley for this ARC.
Thank you to NetGalley and Richard Jay Parker for an advanced copy in return for my honest review. The Good Neighbour is available to read on March 18, 2021!
Leah Talbot was in a minor car accident when she walked up to a lit house to ask for assistance. It was here that she met Martin, with whom she felt a physical connection. When Leah went back to Martin’s home the next day to offer a gift as means of thanks, she is shocked to find that Martin might not be who he claimed to be.
When I first realized the premise of this book I was hooked. The twist so early on in the book sent me flying and I couldn’t wait to dive in and devour the book. I was very intrigued by the pull that Leah felt towards Martin and couldn't figure out if I was rooting for them or not. I love that the author was able to play with my emotions like that. This was an exciting, suspenseful read that I definitely recommend.
It's the moment that changed everything. It all started when she hit a deer, and of course, her phone was dead. So even though her house is only a few minutes up the road, she needs to get her car towed, so she goes to the nearest house to call for help.
So conscientious, Leah Talbot doesn't want to impose or cause anyone distress, and will do anything to protect those that she loves, even if they don't love her back the way she deserves.
To avoid spoilers, that is pretty much all I can share of this fast-paced, creepy, intriguing, and twisted tale.
It was a good read, one that I needed to finish because every time I thought I knew what was going on, or what was around the next page, I was proven wrong. I needed to know what happened, I was too unsettled to put it down.
Overall, dark, twisted, fast paced and unexpected, Worth the read.
Really enjoyed the good neighbour, the style of writing was fantastic and found it a very easy read enticing you to keep reading page after page. Totally unexpected ending that really added to the story. Will be keeping an eye out for further R.J Parker books
I really wanted to love this book as the premise and beginning was strong. Leah meets Martin after her car breaks down and he lets her into his home to call the twin g company. Going back to thank him, she walks into a crime scene where a woman, the real homeowner, was just savagely murdered. I’m all for our protagonists are naive and make some bad choices to move the story along before they wise up and confront the truth and enter hero mode. However, Leah makes so many really bad choices that I really can’t accept her making, Yes, it’s a quick read, with a fast paced but ultimately unsatisfying cat and mouse plot where the mouse is not only blind sighted but blindfolded, three legged and lacking any sensory knowledge. What fun is that?
I so desperately wanted to love this one. I mean come on, that synopsis just sounds so good! And it definitely started off strong, especially that first meeting between Leah and Martin. However, it fell apart pretty quickly after that. I was just so frustrated with Leah and the stupid things she kept doing, and I also felt like her relationship with Elliot needed further development so you actually felt even remotely invested in what happened to them. As it was, I didn't really care what Martin did or who he hurt because they all just felt so shallow and one dimensional. Plus, Martin's whole motive for everything was just odd to me. Didn't make sense, but also I didn't really care enough to question it. All in all, a quick enough read but not one that I would recommend - there's definitely better thrillers out there.
Disclaimer - I was fortunate enough to be provided with an advance reading copy of this book by NetGalley. This has not affected my review in any way, and all opinions are my own.
The beginning of this book hooks you in so well! The actual events in the book seemed a little out of this world for me and I didn't find myself surprised by anything.
Thanks NetGalley and R. J. Parker and HarperCollins UK, One More Chapter for the ARC of The Good Neighbour
Talk about a page turner, I could not put this down
Leah is on her way home and has an accident, she sees a house down a lane that she has never noticed before, she needs help, knocks on the door and a lovely gentleman helps her out
the next day she stops by with a bottle of wine to say thanks, there are police everywhere, Leah finds out that the gentleman that helped her does not live there....now the story takes off. Leah was the last one to see the man who murdered the woman who lived in the house
this is a must read.
When Leah crashes her car on the way home one night, she goes to the nearest house to call for help. A man by the name of Martin answers the door and he lets her in to clean up, & make the call. She goes back to the house the next day with a bottle of wine as a thank you gift for being such a gracious host, only to discover the property swarming with police. The owner, a woman, was brutally murdered, and the man Leah knows as Martin is the most likely suspect. The problem is, Leah was a little too free with her information the night before, thanks to shock of the situation. So now Martin knows where she lives. What if he is coming for her next?
I had a love-hate relationship with this book. The premise sounded really promising. I did enjoy the cat-and-mouse game between Martin and Leah, and how psycho he was. I did not really get why the killer was so fixated on Leah, and I never really felt invested in Leah's character (or anyone else's for that matter). Leah made a lot of dumb moves that didn't make any sense, in regards to Martin, and I felt it really detracted from her character. Also, her marriage to Elliot was just strange. All in all, it was ok. Not great, but not terrible either.... just ok.
This book started out really strong for me. However I felt I didn’t really like any of the characters, I think this may have been deliberate as they weren’t portrayed as very likeable but I found myself wanting more from them.
The storyline was fast paced and interesting but I found it quite predictable and I would have liked a bit more suspense in some parts
The Good Neighbour by R.J. Parker is just the fast-paced that I read in one sitting!!
When driving home on a dark, rainy night, Leah Talbot hits a deer, wrecks her car. She then goes to the nearest house in search of assistance. Martin Tate, welcomes Leah and calls the police and AAA for her. He lets her use his phone to call her husband. Confused and in shock, Leah lets Martin kiss her.
Talk about an opening to a book!!
Thank you so much to NetGalley, HarperCollins UK, One More Chapter and R.J. Parker for this ARC.
