I absolutely loved this book but it is not one to rush through. I am not done with this book because it is writing for a year timeline but I like what I am reading so far. I'm planning on updating my review when finished
This is such an incredibly powerful resource!! I enjoyed the way the content is presented and portioned out for daily reading. I am looking forward to purchasing a finished copy for my family. Thank you to the publishers for the opportunity to read an advanced copy of The Bible Recap by Tara-Leigh Cobble!!
If you ever read your Bible and then immediately wonder, "What did I just read?" this is the book for you! Each day, you'll read 2-3 chapters of a chronological Bible reading plan, and then read a short explanation of what you read. Tara-Leigh Cobble offers insight into the historical context of the events, translation of the original language, and other interesting info--all easy to understand without a theology degree! I'm so grateful for this resource and the impact it's had on my life. I've gotten to know my God and the history of my faith on a deeper level this year, and can't say enough good things about this resource.
I was pleasantly surprised by this book! Ms. Cobble did a wonderful job of breaking down the different parts of the Bible into sections that can easily work together with a one-year daily reading plan. I would not use this book to "replace" my Bible reading, but rather as a companion to each day that I read my devotions. I also find it important to understand that, as a companion, it does not replace the Bible in it's explanations, but rather just offers one persons interpretation of events and examples. As with any book, a companion style book is simply an opinion of that authors thoughts. We must remember that this author is also human, and that interpretation can vary immensely among many Bible scholars. This said, I was impressed by this book, and will likely purchase a hard copy of it for my own use!
I received a complimentary copy of this book from Bethany House through NetGalley. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
Thank you to Bethany House and NetGalley for providing me with an advanced copy of this book.
Loved this! I was hoping that Cobble would release a book to accompany her podcast. This is a great assistant as you work your way through the bible.
I absolutely loved the time and effort that Tara-Leigh Cobble put into ‘The Bible Recap’. The way she writes allows the reader to learn about each day’s scripture wether they are a seasoned Bible reader or this is their first time. I will forever be recommending this book to friends and family.
A difficult book to classify - one might call it a Devotional, a Bible Reading Plan, a Chronological Bible, or a Bible Commentary. It is actually a bit of all three. The author has taken the Bible and divided it into 365 daily readings in Chronological order. The reader will need to have their favorite Bible handy, the text of the Scriptures are not included in this book. Along with each daily reading is a brief commentary helping the reader understand the underlying text. The day’s reading concludes with a devotional thought (called “Today’s God Shot”) suggesting how the reading might be applied in a believer’s life.
Picking up this book makes this reader want to start (better, restart) a plan to read through the Bible next year. Actually, the reader can start anytime - The 365 daily sections are numbered - not dated. An individual could easily use the book as a guide through the scriptures or a small group could use it as a jumping-off point for a year-long walk through the Word of God.
A local church could use it as a Christmas gift for its members as they seek to study the Scriptures together.

I'm just completing a personal project of reading the Bible beginning to end and I'm excited to begin all over with this book and Cobble's insights into the daily readings.
A commitment like this - reading the entire Bible - can be daunting; but with the help Cobble provides in understanding what one is reading, it makes the endeavor that much more worthwhile.
This is such an intriguing book to read. The only thing I could really wish for is better separation between the readings. This would make it so much easier to read it on a daily basis. I know myself that I buzzed past several days worth before I realized what was happening.
I had not heard of Tara-Leigh Cobble prior to a bookstagram friend recommending "the Bible Recap." Now I am a fan. This companion to daily Bible reading is just right for those who need a little help understanding what is going on in a passage, but don't want something as heavy or technical as a commentary. I like that Tara-Leigh progresses through the Bible in chronological order (as opposed to the order in the English Bible). So the prophetical books are interspersed within Kings and Chronicles, as they would be on a timeline. Ditto for the epistles appearing within Acts according to when Paul and others wrote them. This alone, makes the experience fresh for seasoned Bible readers.
Each day's selection also includes a "God Shot" which is where the author helps us see that all scripture points to the Lord. The closing phrase of each entry is: "He is where the joy is!" What a wonderful daily reminder in these strange, uncertain times.
If you aspire to read the Bible through in 2021, get a copy of this book. It will be an invaluable companion on the journey.
Tara-Leigh Cobble’s zeal for biblical literacy led her to create and develop Bible studies called D-Group (Discipleship Group) to study Scripture. In reviewing The Bible Recap, I think it must be the core to the “D-Group”. Additionally, I realize The Bible Recap is multi-faceted. Ms. Cobble has designed The Bible Recap to help listeners read and understand the Bible as well, as an audio podcast by the same title is also an option. The Bible Recap is indeed very comprehensive with some appealing and helpful components!
The Bible Recap is a helpful resource to be used in conjunction with The Holy Bible. Ms. Cobble’s explanation of the portion of Scripture to be read offer insights, wisdom and history to explain and enrich. In addition to the mini-commentary/ recap/summary there is a God Shot portion at the end of each day’s reading, which draws in personal application. The God Shots are brief, reflective devotionals.
The E book version has some challenges in maneuvering. The book is designed to start at the beginning and “read through the Bible”. It is difficult if the reader desires to read certain books of Scripture; one can not easily do that ( at least not in combination with the podcast). Another challenge for this reader is that the day’s reading is not organized by a book of the Bible; instead passages are grouped together in chronological order. That is a novel approach which offers an understanding of events occurring simultaneously in various books of the Bible, especially in the gospels. At the end of The Bible Recap, after the acknowledgements, there is a LONG list of links “for further information on this topic, click on this link”. However, one doesn’t know WHAT topic(s) to which they refer! That is a glaring issue as it is confusing and frustrating by not being user friendly.
The Bible Recap is a gem of a resource for those endeavoring to read and understand the Bible! The summarizations offer clarity and explanations; the devotional God Shots provide for personal insights and reflection.. The Bible Recap is a beneficial addition to add to one’s library to complement one’s Bible reading plan in seeking spiritual growth. I am glad I discovered it and I highly recommend it!
Ms. Cobble’s introduction perfectly and powerfully presents her purpose and passion for her book. She states: Here’s what I’m imagining for you this year: Picture yourself being drawn to God and His character instead of feeling alienated by the God of the Old Testament. Imagine understanding the motives behind His actions instead of feeling confused or even frustrated by what He does. Picture yourself actually hearing from God in His Word directly and feeling closer to and more intimate with Him than you ever have before—just because you’ve committed to spending the first 1 percent of your day with Him. If all you gain from this is one new insight about God, that insight could change the rest of your life and your relationship with Him. And no matter how your circumstances change, I believe your joy will grow deeper and richer, because you will be spending time with Him—and He is where the joy is! For the gospel, Tara-Leigh
I received a complementary copy of The Bible Recap in exchange for an honest review.
This study guide is a super helpful tool to use when reading the Bible! Can be read by itself or alongside reading the Bible. The author writes in a way that is so easy to understand and is also thought-provoking. Highly recommend this book!
I was on the lookout for a devotional that focuses on God and not on life application. So glad I found this one!
I like so many things about The Bible Recap:
1. The fact that it focuses on telling us what we can learn about God from the daily Bible readings so that we can know Him better and love Him more!
2. The Bible readings go chronologically.
3. Tara-Leigh is an excellent writer. Very clear and sometimes even humorous
4. She recaps the day's readings so well..we understand and remember what we just read
5. She explains some of the issues and problems that people commonly find in the day's readings. She has obviously done a lot of research on that! Sometimes being stumped by certain things discourages me from reading the Bible so this is really helpful
6. The God-Shot passages tell us what we can know about God from the day's passages. Love how she always tie things up by saying that God is where the joy is. We are reminded how amazing God is. My heart was often touched!
7. She has a podcast that presents much of what is written in the book – the 365 daily readings and more! But if you are a visual person or like to make notes or other marks, a physical book is better! Plus, having a hardcopy that you can see on your table makes it harder to forget about it. I hope to get it for my collection.
8. The Bible Recap can be found in the popular Bible App that every Christian seems to be using. There, you can tick off each day's Bible readings and think about the questions asked in there (the devotional part is not included.)
9. She has various other programs that you can subscribe to in order to ask questions and discuss with other people as part of the devotional.
All in all, an excellent publication, with lots of useful resources!
This is my honest opinion based on the review copy I received from the publisher.
I couldn’t just read this book. I had to mull over what The Bible Recap by Tara-Leigh Cobble was saying.
It is well written and easy to understand. Hopefully who ever is reading it also has a familiarity with the Bible to comprehend this truth.
My husband has listened to The Bible Recap podcast and recommended it to me. So, when I saw the book available for review I knew I wanted to preview it. The reader daily reads the section of the Bible suggested and then Tara-Lee Cobble gives you further explanation of what was read and how it fits into the whole story.
I am planning on asking for a paper version of The Bible Recap for Christmas and hope that it will keep me on track for reading the Bible in a year! I am also suggesting it to friends as a resource.
I received a complimentary copy of The Bible through Net Galley, but all opinions are my own.
I have been a fan of The Bible Recap since it first made its debut, so to have it in a book form is such a huge blessing! I love the way Tara Leigh makes the Bible approachable and understandable. She helps make connections I wouldn’t have otherwise made, and shows where seemingly insignificant details are actually pretty important. The amount of research that is put into this book is impressive and I’m grateful to have this wealth of knowledge as a companion to my time in the Word.
The Bible Recap is a fantastic year=long reading plan with a unique twist. After you read the selected chapters in the Bible, the entire thing is recapped in easy to understand language. And it is done chronologically, which is a big help. This is the Bible communicated to you in today's language.
Of course, it is meant to be read after reading the actual scripture, which will enable you to decide whether or not you agree or disagree with the author's interpretation.
I highly recommend this to those of you, like myself, who sometimes get confused with some of the language, which can get quite complicated.
I recommend this to everyone who reads the Bible. I received a free digital copy of this book from Bethany House via Netgalley. However, I will be purchasing a hard copy after it is released to add to my personal library.
I begin using Tara-Leigh Cobble's podcast of the same name in January as a supplement to my chronological Bible reading plan. I was immediately blown away by all the insight she was able to bring out of Scripture. However, this was one place where the audio sometimes left me hanging. When I saw this book pop up and learned that it was her audio presented as a reading for each day, I was so excited. If you are looking for a practical way to make Scripture more meaningful and understand how the whole book works together, this book will be a great resource.
I wasn't expecting this book to be set up as blueprint, but it was a welcomed treat.
It's a daily plan, you get the reading for the day and unlike a Genesis to Revelation reading this one is chronological. (as it happened in Scripture) I LOVED this. For example after Genesis 8-11, we find ourselves in the book of Job chapter 1-5. Cool right?
Cobble suggest that you read the days Scripture in your Bible then return to this book to get a highlight or summary of what you read, to help with clarity.
Being able to return to this book was a blessing to me, a bonus for me was "Today's God Shot" this is where you will have the opportunity to SEE God's character in that Scripture you read for the day.
Every Bible student should have a copy of this book on hand when reading and studying.
Tara-Leigh Cobble has written a wonderful guide through the Bible. Each section is thoughtfully written and gives fascinating insights and ideas into Bible passages. No matter if you are new to the Bible or a long-time lover of scripture, you will find great benefit in reading this. Reading through the Bible can be daunting, but Tara breaks up the Bible passages into easily digestible segments. I personally loved her God Shot at the end of each section. They really allowed me to reflect on what I'd read and apply new knowledge gained in a practical way.
