Mystery and Austen come together in a new story that will keep you on the edge of your seat as you turn each page. I loved the characters and the pacing was perfect. I am so glad that this is a series because I will devour the next one when it comes out! I will say that I was lost a few times as the story because of word choices. It made me feel like I was taken out of that time period. But overall it was just something to get used to.
sadly, before i could download this title, netgalley took it off their catalog. that means i can’t review this one. HOWEVER, i will be checking in with my library to see if i can get a copy and review it that way
While aspects of this mystery were enjoyable and I always enjoy a fresh take on Austen, I found the attempts to fit all of the original characters into a new narrative to be jarring. Some characters personalities were much changed, while others remained so similar, which led to me being frequently taken out of the story and reflecting on these differences. For teens who may not be as familiar with the source materials, however, it was an enjoyable mystery and Lizzie is, as ever, a likeable heroine.
Pride and Premediation by Tizrah Price was a total delight. I remember when I first read about the premise thinking it would be difficult to execute (YA murder mystery + beloved characters) but it worked so well! Lizzie and Darcy had real chemistry and the story felt fresh, while still paying homage to Jane Austen's classic. I'm looking forward to book two!
Ended up DNFing 25% of the way through. I just couldn’t get into it unfortunately, it wasn’t the book for me.
First sentence: It is a truth universally acknowledged that a brilliant idea, conceived and executed by a clever young woman, must be claimed by a man. Elizabeth Bennet stood in the offices of the optimistically named law firm of Longbourn & Sons and fixed her father's junior partner, Mr. Collins, with her fiercest glare.
Premise/plot: Tirzah Price's spin on Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice is a delight from start to finish. It is set in the Regency--like the original--but it intentionally plays around with history. Taking something that would be absolutely impossible--a young woman working in a law firm and pursuing a career in law--and makes it instead something rare, unique, out of the ordinary....but not impossible.
Elizabeth Bennet, our heroine, has ambitions to follow in her father's footsteps. This has her investigating a potential case for Longbourn & Sons. Mr. Bingley has been arrested and charged with murdering his brother-in-law, Mr. Hurst. Elizabeth would like to use this case to prove her abilities. She is determined to investigate the case, follow the clues, and find the real murderer. This has her at odds with Mr. Darcy a lawyer (solicitor) at Pemberley and Associates. If the real murderer is to be found--and Mr. Bingley's innocence proven--it might just take both of them working together despite their personal feelings.
My thoughts: I love, love, love, love, love this adaptation. It is so delightful. It has all the characters from the original novel. (Well, most of them. I can think of a few that are missing.) Some of the original dialogue--all the best bits--reworked to fit this new situation. And it works surprisingly well. Mrs. Bennet is still very active in trying to get her daughters married off. She is still a nervous woman. Mr. Bennet is still favoring Elizabeth. Elizabeth is still super close with Jane who is a calming influence on her.
I would absolutely LOVE to see a film version of Pride and Premeditation. There's even a scene that could easily accommodate a wet shirt scene with Mr. Darcy.
This story had such a cute concept, but I think there was a lack in romance which is so important in a Pride and Prejudice retelling. This is a retelling with a twist. There is a murderer in the midst and Mr. Bingley is the prime suspect. Liz is like takes the role of detective and tries to find a way to prove who the real murderer is. It was very entertaining, and fast paced, but I never fell in love with it. I would have loved some more tension and interaction between Liz and Darcy.
A delightful, historical who-dunit, with a plethora of banter, Pride and Premeditation met all my expectations.
Pride and Prejudice has forever been one of my favorite romantic, cozy reads and movie experiences. But could it be that all this time it has been missing something? Potentially murder? Tirzah Price writes a fabulous, laugh out loud, take on Elizabeth Bennet’s world with a sprinkling of danger and a dash of stabbing.
For Lizzy Bennett, working in her fathers law firm without due recognition for her talent isn’t enough. A head strong seventeen year old, she wants nothing more than to acquire a permanent position despite the fact that she is a woman in Georgian era London. When Mr. Bingley is accused of murder and jailed, Lizzie seizes the opportunity to prove herself and his innocence. Shortly after the investigation begins, none other than Mr. Fitzwilliam Darcy, the heir to Pemberley Associates, interferes and they soon must learn to work together in order to find the true murderer.
Having already been overly familiar with the characters of Jane Austen’s acclaimed novel, Pride and Premeditation was as predictable as it was fun. Price did an excellent job of capturing the essence of the characters while still bringing new life to the classic story. The characters were not unlike the originals but the way they interacted with one another was different and made more modern. Lizzie is still witty and quick to voice her thoughts, but she also strays far from being proper. Price takes historical liberties in order to better bring the characters and story to life, and so Lizzie Bennet is born anew. She is young, daring, and certainly willing to forgo social rules set upon her gender.
This novel is murder mystery first and romance second. Darcy is pushed to the side to give way for Lizzie and her intelligence and wit. Above all, this is a retelling, and I appreciated the author's changes in character and world because it made the classic story something new, rather than the same novel told in a slightly different way. That’s what I think a retelling should be. Of course, there were key plot points that I missed from the original; particularly Jane and Bingly’s growing relationship and Lydia running away with Wickham. All the characters were there.. but few were fleshed out and a focus of the book. I would have loved Jane and the younger sisters to have more depth, rather than a few background lines, but it didn’t take away from the twisting, action packed plot.
Pride and Premeditation was a wonderful, murderous romp through a regency like London. It was a great start to a series and I look forward to reading more! - 4 stars
I love Pride and Prejudice and I loved the idea of it being mixed in with a murder mystery but in my opinon it just didn't work.
I don’t have that much to say. This book… didn’t impress me in the slightest. I found myself skimming through the majority of the book and annoyed by all the characters. One of my favorite parts of the original P&P is the relationship between Jane and Bingley, as well as the tension between Lizzie and Darcy. This book has next to no tension (Darcy goes soft too quickly) and no Jane and Bingley. Honestly, I don’t really recommended. Not a bad book, but definitely not a favorite.
Thank you Netgalley, for giving me this eARC.
Elizabeth Bennet wants to work in her father’s firm. To prove to her father that she is independent, and that she can take on the workload, she is given a case to solve. However, when she arrives at her client, Charles Bingley’s place, a Mr. Darcy from another firm is already there. He is the solicitor for her father’s biggest competition. Elizabeth must work with Mr. Darcy to solve the case so that she can become a barrister, and to solve this puzzling case.
All of the characters' personalities reminded me of the ones from Pride and Prejudice. The murder and the plot twist took me by surprise, but it did make sense. I loved how certain characters were reliable, and how we knew what would happen if we were to have read the original version. Although there wasn’t any character development, the character’s interest and passions really showed. Elizabeth’s determination to be a barrister, and Darcy’s determination to help his friend and family helped the plot.
I really loved how easy it was to finish this book. It took one sitting, and while the writing style was very modern, it incorporated some of Jane Austen’s writing style. At some points, it felt as if the plot was being rushed. Elizabeth and Darcy’s relationship was cute, and the plot was very interesting. I do believe that there is a sequel being created, and I cannot wait to read it.
Pride and Premeditation was okay. Enjoyable, if a teensy bit rambly toward the end when it came time for the big reveal.
Also, I have never read Pride and Prejudice, so while I recognized the characters names, I truly couldn't figure out who the love interest was going to end up being at first. Turns out is was not the murderer, who knew!
I liked the idea of this book more than I liked the execution. I adore Pride and Prejudice and a good murder mystery, but this fell a little flat. I didn't feel like the characters where developed enough and the plot didn't really grab my attention. I didn't hate it, but I didn't love this one either.
Welcome Back!
It has been a long week and it is only Tuesday! However, I did happen to finish a book yesterday, (not this one) that I really enjoyed and it has a sequel that is already out! So I am thinking I will be picking that up very very soon! (I will also be reviewing that book very soon and I might watch the television show that was created about it). But in the meantime, we are here to talk about Pride and Premeditation! I picked up this audiobook from my Libby app a little while ago! I was going to have plenty of time to listen to an audiobook while I worked on some things and so I thought this was the perfect time to listen to this book!
SPOILERS AHEAD
Lizzie wants nothing more than to prove herself to her father and take the open position at his law office and not as a secretary but as a lawyer or lawyer in training at the very least but alas she is a girl and women in this time period were not usually lawyers. So Lizzie takes it upon herself to find a case, that will not only help her prove herself to her father but to everyone that she can do the job just like everyone else. However, as far as first cases go this one might be really complicated. The case is a scandalous murder that rocks London’s high society and of course Lizzie is not the only person going after this case. She will have to go up against someone from a very prestigious law firm and on top of that Lizzie is not exactly sure the police have arrested the right person for this crime.
First, this book gave me huge Stalking Jack the Ripper vibes but in the best way possible. I love the Stalking Jack the Ripper series (I do still have two books in the series to finish and honestly this book made me want to revisit them very soon)! I loved Lizzie’s passion for the law and then this case when she took it on. I believe this was only the first book and that there will be another soon so I will definitely be picking it up when it comes out!
P.S. As a side note because we know I love covers, this cover when you zoom in or look close, appears to have an embroidered style, and that is super unique but it looks amazing and I really love it!
Goodreads Rating: 4 Stars
I love Jane Austen, both in the original stories and any form of an adaptation. I was just commenting to a friend that Bride and Prejudice is a favorite film version of this same story. This hits all the right notes for me, with just enough allusions to the beloved characters and well known plot, but enough changes to keep it fresh and interesting. AND you don’t have to have read Pride and Prejudice to enjoy this. Fans of similar adaptations will come back for the next books in the series!
I loved this book! I went in not sure what to think because THERE ARE SO MANY PRIDE AND PREJUDICE RETELLINGS. However, the murder/lawyer addition made the re-telling feel fresh and interesting. I also felt like it felt very fitting to see Elizabeth want to be a lawyer, and it made me anaylize the character of Elizabeth Bennet in a new way. While we know how the characters' relationships are going to end, the murder keeps the readers on their toes until the end. The murder part of the book is not too gruesome, but people who are very very opposed to violence might not like this.
This book was super cute and fun. This might be a good way to help get students into Jane Austen or be good for fans of her work. The ending felt a little too neat and tidy but didn't detract too much from the overall reading experience. This was a fun read, that I'd recommend for fans of murder mysteries and Jane Austen.
a fun retelling. would be curious to see how my students react to reading this as a companion novel to the original pride and prejudice!
I would like to thank the publishers at HarperCollins Children's Books and NetGalley for an eARC. I enjoyed this book immensely. Lizzie Bennet wants to be a barrister like her father at his law firm, Longbourn & Sons. She wants to prove herself and the opportunity arises when she gets wind of a case. Charles Bingley is charged with murdering his brother-in-law. When interviewing Mr. Bingley, she meets his solicitor, Mr. Darcy. Let's just say sparks fly. If you like cozy mysteries and Pride & Prejudice, then you have to give this a read. I really like this rendition of Jane Austen's classic. Tirzah Price did a brilliant job on this book. I want a sequel! I give Pride and Premeditation a 4 out of 5 stars. I am leaving this review voluntarily.
A fun youth-centric mystery novel. It isn’t necessarily the most complex discussion and reflection on social issues, equity, dismantling systems of oppression, but it was definitely refreshing to see a young woman at the center of the story, and the plot and dialogue kept me engaged!
Pride & Prejudice plus murder mystery? Yes please! This book was so well done and did not disappoint. If you love Jane Austen and also true crime, run to the store to buy this.
