It took me a while to get into this book, but once I did, I fell in love. It was very different from RWRB but in a good way. The characters were very well-rounded, even the side characters, and nothing in this world felt flat. I really liked how August's cold-case solving past tied in with the romance and Jane's story in the end. 4.25 stars
Casey McQuiston is the best author I have read from in a long time. This is a great sophomore novel to follow up the amazing Red White and Royal Blue
The only reason I even requested this book was because it was getting so much hype & I figured it must be a good one. That being said, I went into this book completely blind, not even reading the synopsis first. The first half of the book was a little slow for me. As I was reading I figured this was going to be a three star read for me but the ending really made up for the first half!! Surprisingly I wasn’t the biggest fan of August but regardless, I still loved her relationship with Jane and I loved her relationship with all the roommates. I loved their little family and I loved how the book made me feel like I would be welcomed with open arms if I were there.
I, like everyone else who has read Red, White and Royal Blue, was extremely excited for McQuiston's follow-up. One Last Stop did not disappoint! The writing of the first chapter captivated me and I knew that this was going to be another favourite.
Each character has their own distinct personality and they just fit so well with one another. Each character has their own journey throughout the book, but none of their stories take away from the main plot of August and Jane.
One Last Stop was a delight to read.
Truth time. I absolutely loved Red White and Royal Blue. It was in my top 10 the year I read it and probably was in my top 3. I have recommended it so much to so many different people and everyone has loved it. I had such high hopes for this one. Big hopes. I have to be honest, I felt a little let down.
I felt as though the premise was just sooooooooo far out there. I just felt a little misled and it should have been labelled a sci fi romance. There was so much science in here. The romance was great. I loved the narrator on the audiobook. I loved August and Jane. I just had lots of trouble moving past the way out of this world premise.
Now, I am still going to give it 3.5 stars. I wish I would have loved it loved it.
Amazing! Just amazing! This author will always be one of my favorites! I devoured this book in a few sittings! I cannot recommend this author’s books enough! It’s such a great read!
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the advanced copy.
Casey McQuiston's writing is beautiful and I was pleasantly surprised that I was able to get into it because I often give up on books written in third person. I did not care for the unnecessary Cleveland slander either. I get the the hype though and think it's deserved.
Twenty-three year old August has just moved to New York City to go to college. She's somehow able to secure a room in an apartment she'll share with three other roommates and she got a job at the diner around the corner (thanks to her new roommates). And yet, she doesn't feel like there's a place for her...she often feels alone.
That is until one day she meets a girl on the subway. This girl is fun and bright and August can't help but gravitate towards her. Every time August takes the Q train she manages to see Jane! Soon August is finding every reason to get on the train so she can see Jane. But what starts off as August meeting her dream girl, turns into a race in time to try to help Jane get back to the 1970's. Turns out Jane is from the past and has been stuck on the Q train since the 1970's. Will August be able to help Jane piece together her past so she can help her get back? And what about their budding relationship?
One Last Stop started off really strong for me. I loved getting to know August, her roommates and of course Jane. Their friendship was tentative and sweet and so swoony. But somewhere around the halfway mark, the book started to drag for me. I just felt like there was so much going on and the romance was always there, and yet also it took the back seat a lot.
I switched between listening to the audiobook and reading One Last Stop. The audiobook, narrated by Natalie Naudus was fantastic. Natalie did a wonderful job with the various characters and accents. And while I truly enjoyed the audiobook, the story itself wasn't as enjoyable as I had hoped.
The writing by Casey McQuiston was beautiful as usual. Definitely add One Last Stop to your TBR if you are looking for a F/F romance with time travel aspects (think Loki) with sweet supporting characters to round out the story!
I received an ARC of this book to read through NetGalley. All opinions are my own. One Last Stop by Casey McQuiston was a delightful magic realism novel, and I enjoyed reading it immensely. Not quite sure what she’s looking for other than to escape a difficult childhood August Landry transfers to college in New York, and a notice stuck to a Popeye’s garbage can open up a whole new world for her. She finds an apartment and roommates who become her found family, a job and one day on the subway, a girl with whom she falls into love with at first sight. Every time August takes the Q train, Jane is there, and they develop a friendship that grows into something more, but when August asks Jane to meet her elsewhere, she always declines, Jane can’t leave the Q train, and she’s been riding it since 1977, but it’s not until she meets August that she begins to remember who she is. August and her found family create a plan to rescue Jane from the endless subway rides, but it could mean that Jane will go back to when she first got stuck in time, or it could mean that she will simply cease to exist. This story about love, and friends and family, both blood and found, was so much fun to read, and I highly recommend it. Steam Level: Medium. It's funny because on the day this book came out, I bought the audiobook and literally 5 minutes later, I was approved for an eARC on Netgalley. Then, the following Friday, I went to Indigo and there it was, on the shelf, a beautiful floppy paperback I couldn't resist buying (the cover is purple and pink...) I needed to have a physical copy because I just new I was going to love that book so much.
I was right ✨
This book was just everything I needed. It's well-written, witty, the dialogues are realistic and it has a wonderful cast of characters. This book checks pretty much all of my boxes:
- sapphic romance 💖
- found family
- 🌈 queer characters
- some drama and a bit of magic
I highly recommend this book if you haven't read it! It's a perfect summer/beach read!
<i>Thanks to St. Martin's Press for providing me with an eARC via netgalley

There was a lot in this that I liked and some things that just didn't work for me. I really loved the found family and the secondary characters so much. August's new roommates and friends and co-workers each had such great personalities and stories all on their own and helped introduce August to new ideas and push her to really examine her own life and feelings. I liked the relationship between August and Jane and how it developed from friends to more while they were getting to know each other. I felt like they complimented each other really well and brought out the best in each other. And that even though August knew she was falling in love, she also knew that Jane might not be able to stay with her.
Unfortunately, the time-loop situation and the subway makeout scenes just didn't work for me. Not for any real reason, they weren't badly done actually or anything like that, they just took me out of the story and the romance and while I was reading those parts I was just really wishing that part of the story could be different. Like I said above, they weren't badly done, which with time-loops and time-travel can be a big issue. I just didn't like them for this story. It brought up some interesting information about Pride and how different things are for the LGBTQ+ community new verses in the 1970's. But the book doesn't ever really dig too deeply into that or the racism issues faced by the characters because so much of Jane's memories are gone. And lastly, I just felt like the middle dragged a lot.
I enjoyed this book and I'm glad I read it. I think I liked it more than her other book because the side characters were just so incredible. For me, this would be one to borrow, not buy first.
This book is one of the best books every written! I do not like romance books, but this one made me SOB. 10/10 the hype is real.
This is a charming book about found family, wonderful friends, and the power of love. It will make you want to hug your person or people. It’s quirky, funny, heartwarming, sad, and just wonderful. It’s the kind of book you want to hug when you’ve finished and give to all your friends so they can share in your joy. This is a book that I would recommend to anyone looking for a feel good story that will make you smile.
I really liked this book. The setting was imaginative and the characters were memorable. Thank you for the ARC, I will definitely recommend this book and this author to my peers.
I adored this book, but I don’t think it quite lived up to Red, White, and Royal Blue. Also, I have to say that I thought August was awfully dismissive of Jane’s feelings at a number of points in the novel. All in all, this was still a wonderful book
This was really cute!
Light and fun. It was a very quick read
I was mainly obsessed with Niko and Myla (which was not the main romance) haha
This was an interesting novel that's definitely full of the unexpected. The romance was a bit unexpected in terms of whether or not it would actually work with one character literally stuck in a public place. I really enjoyed the aspects of personal growth and finding your chosen family in the story. The combination of characters with backgrounds in both the 1970s and modern day LGBTQ+ culture was interesting--it was cool to see how far we have come, but also the work that still needs to be done for acceptance. But since this is also a romance, I found the actual romance and love story a bit lackluster and unbelievable. I like magical aspects in my stories, and don't mind them even in more realistic novels, but the time travel bit in this was a bit awkward.
This queer female romance has possibly my favorite book friend group ever, great music (thank you to everyone who has created Spotify playlists with the songs/bands mentioned, you saved me a TON of time), unexpected time travel (did I not read the synopsis closely??) and just so much heart. Thank you @stmartinspress for the early copy.
Great LGBTQ+ romance! Really enjoyed the characters and the setting. Super sweet and just serious enough! Highly recommend!
So I didnt realize that this book was more if a magical realism type of story when I picked it up. I definitely would have liked it more if I had been expecting that. That being said, the quality of the writing is phenomenal, the cast of characters is fun and unique and amazing, and the entire drag queen/queer/inclusive theme is fantastic. Overall, worth the read.
