Even if I'm not a fan of Claire, the MC, I found this book gripping and entertaining.
It's a fast paced story, full of twists and turns, with a lot of secrets and surprises.
It's well plotted and kept me reading.

This is an interesting book that contains two mysteries, one of which has not yet been revealed. The mysteries are complex and held my attention. Claire's interactions with Marvel's family are just as compelling as her interactions with the psychopath Kobi. However, the time spent on Claire's personal life was uninteresting. Her relationship actually ticked me off at times. Her significant other treats her badly and I cannot figure out why she stays with him. Claire is a brilliant psychiatrist. Why would she put up with this?

This is part of a series but can easily be read as a standalone. I received a free copy of this book from Severn House via Netgalley. My review is voluntary.

Dr. Claire Roget has been called in to interview Jonah Kobi, who confessed to murdering several young girls but not 14 year old Marvel, who has been missing for six long years. She already has a struggle with one of her own patients so this adds weight to her days. And there's DS Zed Willard, who is pressing her (and he's not a very patient person). She feels a special push though to resolve Marvel's mystery, as her father is dying and wants answers. No spoilers from me about either of the two mysteries here (I'm not even going to tell you what the second one is). It's a well done and twisty story that doesn't descend, as some serial killer stories do, into the incredibly gruesome. The interaction between Claire and Jonah might remind you a bit of Silence of the Lambs but this has it's own merits. Thanks to netgalley for the ARC. Interesting read.

This was the first book I've read by this author and although it wasn't quite my taste, I did enjoy the two mysteries within the story and the twists and unexpected turns that they took. I didn't really connect with the character which is my reason for the 3 stars.

Good mystery! Dr. Claire Roget works with psychiatric patients. She is asked for help on a cold case. Can she get to the truth about who murdered Marvel Trustom? Or will she lose the battle with a dangerous psychopath?

Dr. Claire Roget, forensic psychiatrist, is called by DS Zed Willard to help on the case of a missing girl, Marvel, a 6-year old cold case. He wants her to try to find the truth by interviewing serial killer Jonah Cobi in jail. He has confessed to the murders of 4 schoolgirls, but will not admit to murdering or hiding the body of Marvel. At the same time Claire is extremely busy with her psychiatric patients; one in particular is proving to be a head scratcher.
I liked this book, there are no gruesome, gratuitous scenes, instead it has two good mysteries with surprising endings and interesting insights on the minds of psychopaths and sociopaths. Claire is not particularly likeable to me and neither is Zed, who seems quite petulant and ungrateful towards Claire. That said, it's a thrilling read that I definitely recommend.
