This poignant book tells the story of Daniel and Liv, very reminiscent of The Notebook. It's well written and I thought it accurately described relationships in a deeper way than most chick lit books do. The time jumps were a little off for me, but don't let that stop you from giving this one a go.
This is a book of what dreams are made of for romance. I will admit this had undertones of The Notebook. It dealt with an epic love story and two soul mates. This is also one of those "You can't judge a book by its cover" instances because I thought this was going to be a light read. Instead of was an emotional, tug on your heart strings type of book. It take us through twenty years of a relationship from the first meeting and including all the ups and downs of making relationships work. The reason why it reminded me of the Notebook was the fact that Olivia is sick and she is asking Daniel to write their story down for their daughters.
The one thing I did struggle with was the pacing of the book and how hard it was to keep up with when you couldn't read it for hours on end. I kept putting it down due to other things going on but then always had to go back a few pages to catch up. So this is def a book you should read if you have a lot of time.
Thank you so much to the publisher and #NetGalley for the ARC.
I loved every second of reading this book, honestly couldn't put it down. This was just the kind of entertaining read I needed.
This was a thoroughly enjoyable read, and I’m a huge fan of Zoe’s books. The plot was brilliant and the characters were so relatable.
The Night We Met by Zoe Folbigg a five-star read that you will need tissues for, but despite the need for lots of tissues this is still one of the best stories I have read in a long time. It can take some getting used to the flow of words and the jumps in time and narrative, but honestly keep going as its so much more than an epic love story. You do need to pay attention, so this is not one to pick up and put down after a page or two, but if you have an afternoon in a rainy window seat, or a day in the sun pick this up and forget the world. Its not always happiness and joy, the story deals with touching and often difficult subjects but as always, this author does it with thought, care, and dignity. Sometimes we all need to have a good cry and just forget our own lives, this is the perfect story for that.
If you could never get tired of reading about love, destiny and second chances, this is the right book for you. A true example of serendipity, of love found, lost and then found again. I strongly believe in that feeling you get in the depth of your stomach, when you know you have met the right one. If you ever heard a little voice in your head telling you to never stop hoping, to keep looking for your special one, then you should really read Zoë Folbigg’s newest novel. You will immediately fall in love with Daniel’s strong hope and devotion, with Olivia’s magnetic personality and with their love story.
It took Daniel just one look to know that Liv was the one for him and just one night spent drinking together, to know that he would have fought against the laws of time and space, for one more night like that, for one more look, for a chance at forever. So, since the night they met, he kept hoping and looking and wandering. Days and months and years passed, missed chances, paths crossed, until fate decided to step in and help two lost souls out. Their past and present lives unfold before our eyes, as Daniel tries to put into word their epic love story for their daughters to read and cherish. Because the greatest gift parents can do to their children is loving each other endlessly, through thick and stone and show this love to the world.
Olivia and Daniel are two, very, interesting characters, very different from each other: one has spent her whole life looking for that special thrill, running from something or from herself, until one day she realised that the spark was within her, not far from home; the other has spent his life being cautious, never going far from home, never taking major steps, always too afraid, until one day he realised he had to jump and feel it all, in order to be happy.
With her emotional, moving and flawless writing Folbigg gave us the perfect love story about that kind of love that happens only once in a lifetime. In a time of uncertainty, as the one we have been living lately, this book reminds us that taking chances is maybe the only thing we can do to be happy. Life is too short; life can change in a heartbeat and we should never stop chasing the happiness we deserve.
Thanks Netgalley and the Publisher. I really enjoy this authors books and this was no exception, fantastic storyline, great characters. Loved it.
This book livedd up to my expectations. I have enjoyed her previous work and this was similar in a positive way.
This book was the perfect escape. It was lovely and fun. It was my first book by this author and I will definitely be on the look out for more!!
* Thanks to Aria and Netgalley for the proof of this one!
I am a sucker for a Zoë Folbigg story, but compared to The Note, The Postcard and The Distance this story fell a little flat.
Olivia Messina is a fashion designer, mum to two girls, and wife to Daniel. As she is unable to, she asks her husband to write the story of how the two met, a love story for their children in a sense. The story jumps from their first meeting to being married with children, to meeting again so you can really see the base of their relationship and how that evolves. Fate plays a huge part in the pair ending up together, and lends itself to the notion of 'what is meant for you won't pass you by'. This is a love story spanning decades - there are fleeting glances in countries the other side of the world, clumsy awkward meetings, yearning, health struggles and heartbreaking moments in the final part of the story - that will really make you FEEL. The synopsis really paints this as a 'first-meeting' love story, but really it shows the struggles and the effort that needs to be put in for love to really work.
Whilst the premise of the story itself of a husband agreeing to tell the love story of him and his wife to his children is a sweet one, I didn’t really empathise with the characters as much as I thought I would. The timeline jumps around from present-day to different moments in the past, and with different perspectives. This makes the narrative a little hard to follow especially as sometimes there are hints or plot points then there would be a time-jump and it would be some time before you learn about that event or plot arc.
As a fashion graduate and a journalist, I love that Olivia and Daniel’s jobs combined both of these aspects. The descriptions of the day to day work of them both really added a touch of reality to the story and added a little more colour and depth to the pair. My one dismay is that there needed to be more uplifting moments because this is quite a hard-hitting and emotional read and at times I found it draining and was looking for some light respite or even an attempt at balancing emotions.
If I could sum up the story in one word it would be serendipity. It weaves together many life struggles into one pair's romantic journey and shows the strength and resilience of two people in love fighting for one another.
This book was far from what I expected.
It is a story of serendipity, love and what comes after. So often books end with the love, the night we met follows Daniel and Olivia into the after and it is a great after.
There are so many of life's complexities woven so carefully together into a beautiful narrative in this book.
I can't wait to read some of the author's future work.
I was given an ARC by NetGalley to review.
Olivia Messina Mother of Two daughters and wife to Daniel has one major problem. She needs the love of her life to write their story of how they met since she is unable too. It is supposed to be dedicated to their two daughters. Some may call the love story fate on how they met and developed their relationship the good the bad the ugly. However, Daniel’s feels that the story on how they met deserves to be from his wife’s point of view also. She doesn’t think so as much, I interpret he thinks it’s a defeatist attitude. Her attitude is you’re the writer. Olivia Messina is 43 and has a lot going on which is hard for me not to reveal. (Olivia has brain cancer)
So Daniel Takes up at his wife’s beheast to write their story for when their girls grow up. It is written in his point of view to his daughters but I actually love how the story was written on how they met. I felt it was a good distraction for Daniel while the wife is dying. His experience as you go along from how they met to different time periods to marriage and current circumtances and watching how they daughters feel. Its heartbreaking.
It’s like trying to distract the mind to a time where things were happier. It is like looking into someone else’s life and wanting to just not stop crying. It is trying to find the silver lining in a dark cloud. You have to love the ups and downs. Looking for the ever after. For me it is like thinking how a support group feels. How do people view life loved well lived and blessed.
It’s very deep and complex writing points out complex things and maybe things some people never would have guessed.
This Arc was given to me by Netgalley I am happy to read this for an honest review.
3 stars
The premise reminded me somewhat of The Notebook. Writing down your love story while one of you is sick....
This was a lot more emotional than I expected it to be. It showed quite a few struggles that people face in life.
The synopsis makes it sound like this story is mostly about the beginning of their love story, but it’s mostly about what comes after love. The ups and downs after a romantic meet cute.
It was a cute love story, albeit very sad.
I found myself not caring much about the backstories of Daniel and Olivia that didn’t involve them together. I didn’t feel it added much to the story. I get why it was there, but that was the least enjoyable part to read.
I also seem to be in the minority because I didn’t find their love story super compelling. It had its ups and downs and was more on the realistic side, but I was not invested.
It was well written and overall it was an average enjoyable read.
*special thanks for NetGalley for the ARC copy in exchange for a review!
A beautiful love story well told . It follows Olivia and Daniel in good times and bad . Having just finished it, I am still feeling a mixture of emotions which the story evoked. I would not call this story chick-lit as but it is, on the whole, a realistic picture of a couples story. The story is written from different points of view and at different times during the 20 years from when they first made contact.
Some parts of the story were described in detail, others more fleeting and I would have liked to know a little more , but on the whole the balance was good and as the story comes to a close, it did not matter so much. I liked most of the characters (those I was supposed to!) . They were well portrayed and likeable and the spark between Daniel & Olivia was well described, together with Daniel's misgivings about his behaviour being too obsessive .
I`ll look out for more from this author.
Thank you to Net galley for an ARC in exchange for an honest review
Daniel and Olivia keep bumping into each in Australia and New Zealand but not long enough for Daniel to get contact details. All he knows is her first name and that she's originally from Italy. Then he bumps into her in London but she's been drinking and on drugs and then he loses touch with her again.
This the story of Daniel and Olivia. Olivia is in hospital and the couple reflect on their life together. A powerful love story that might never have happened had their paths not kept crossing. Its not your typical boy meets girls and falls in love and live happily ever after. It gets really emotional and had me in tears. Its quite the rollercoaster for your emotions.
I liked how the story went from the here and now and back to the past. It is really sad and I would have liked some lighter moments to balance it a bit but that said overall I enjoyed reading the book and I will be looking out for more books by this author.
I have read the authors others books and I have to say that I didn’t enjoy this much as the other books the author has done.
I struggled to finish this book, I give it 3 out of 5 stars
With thanks to Netgalley & Aria Books for the arc of this book in exchange of this review
I would like to start this review by stating that I’ve read other books by this author and absolutely adored them.
Unfortunately, and it pains me to say this, I wasn’t a huge fan of The Night We Met. The story spans a couple of decades and follows the love between Daniel and Olivia. The story moves back and forth over the years, revealing segments of their lives together.
The story was very emotional and I feel that it lacked some positive or hopeful chunks to lighten the overall read. However, the story did make me think and reflect on things - which is something quite special for an author to do.
Overall, this was a nice story, but I found it quite heavy and emotionally challenging. As previously mentioned, I enjoy this authors work and will continue to read her books in future.
Thank you NetGalley and publisher for my advanced copy of this book in exchange for an honest review 📚
So this book was not about what I thought it was. Without a doubt this is an epic love story. The kind of love that is real and what we should all strive to live.
Daniel and Olivia first saw each other in the most improbable of ways- in fleeting moments during separate vacations in foreign countries. But the connection was there. And fate had its way so that their paths continued to cross until they finally connected for real. And that moment was life altering.
The book starts in the present and we are faced with the characters dealing with impossible circumstances. Because of that, Daniel is charged with writing their love story. Thus we are going back and forth in time and back and forth between point of view. My biggest complaint is that the transitions between who's perspective we are seeing the story from and what year the story is currently taking place is confusing.
But this is an emotional read, and at times it is very difficult to read. I think there needed to be so more levity to balance the emotions. Even their history isn't all light and love- there are bumps along the way. Much like life I guess. But considering the emotions this author was able to evict from me, I think I would have appreciated some more relief from the heaviness.
All in all this is a beautiful story. This is the first story I have read by Zoe Folbigg and it won't be the last.
The writing style and lay out of the shorter chapters were ideal. I did struggle at times with the transitions but that's more my fault than the books.
Great story covering lots of subject areas.
