This is a clever style for a book. This was originally published as an ebook series, where each “episode” (think chapter) was published independently from the others. All the episodes are centered around the main story but written by different authors and therefore to,d slightly differently. This change in focus is interesting as a presentation. I enjoyed the main story about Beatrix and her helper, who are in the fortune telling business. A mysterious man comes to town and declares that he can prove that fortune telling is fake. The story goes from there in many unique ways. There is a great atmosphere and twists and turns as you read.
I recommend this for those that would like a mixture of genres in an atmospheric spooky tale.

Before I delve into my thoughts on the story, let’s talk about the format of the book itself. It’s by three separate authors, who each take a section. These sections are split into ‘episodes’ rather than ‘chapters’.

At first I thought this was extremely odd until I found out the book was originally available on Serial Box. Serial Box is essentially a paid e-book and audio book platform for sci-fi and fantasy fans. This particular book was available as an audio book, with an episode being released each week. I’m personally glad I read it in it’s full book format.

Onto the story;

I essentially wanted something a little spooky to read over Halloween, and this didn’t disappoint. I thought the writing and the flow was going to be disjointed, what with the switching of authors, but you hardly noticed to be honest. It actually reminded me of those stories you wrote as a child. When you wrote a line, folded the page over, and the person next to you wrote another line, and so on and so on.

“Beatrix watched as hands reached out from behind that rancid floral wallpaper, grasping at them, at her, the fingers curling like claws.”

I’ve only given it 3 stars, because it’s just not my genre, but this shouldn’t put you off from picking up this book. There are twists and turns that you don’t expect, and two central characters that you can truly feel for.

It’s a gothic-inspired intriguing tale of spirits vs. science, with a little bit of romance thrown in for good measure.

This was a perfect read on Halloween night. I sat on the edge of my favorite reading spot finishing this haunted tale. It much longer than the mere 23 pages that it says it is. I really enjoyed it. Thought the author did a great job.
The time period was Victorian England. The story kept me hostage and made me nervous. I messed around with ouija boards as a teenager and it scared the crap out of me. This book had a similar feel. It reminded me of Amityville Horror, the book. There was a presence in the story that wouldn’t let go. Everyone was a prisoner who entered.
I’m definitely reading book 2. I love this time period and recommend this for a great haunted read.

Thank you NETGALLEY and the publisher for this ARC, in exchange for my honest review. ♥️

My Rating: 🌟🌟🌟.5
Content Rating: 18+
Genre: Horror, Historical Fiction, Paranormal, Mystery, Romance
Published: January 7, 2020, by Serial Box

The Haunting of Beatrix Greene, written by Rachel Hawkins, Ash Parsons, and Vicky Alvear Shecter, is a quick fun read with a creepy gothic feel that is perfect for all horror and supernatural fans—uniquely written by three authors The Haunting of Beatrix Greene, is written as one chapter; Season 1 which is then broken down into Episodes that have their own title. The authors take turns writing the episodes. Within each episode, the authors give us the two main characters' dueling viewpoints, Beatrix and James. All this may seem confusing, but not to worry, each perspective is labeled with the character's name, so actually, it's very straightforward.

Set in Victorian-era Derbyshire England, Beatrice Greene is an esteemed spiritual medium, but is she? James Walker portrays himself as a scientist who is notorious for discrediting many spiritual mediums; however, all is not what it seems when it comes to James. He sees something in Beatrice, and it fits with his dark secretive needs. James offers Beatrice a chance of a lifetime, come to Ashbury Manor and prove whether the house is haunted or not. Beatrice known she is a fraud, but if she can fake her way through this one night, she would gain financial independence.

On the eve before Beatrice goes to the estate, she learns the frighting truth about her abilities.

"There was a shadow flickering amid the gloom in her hallway-a shadow in the shape of a man…she could hear something now…a sound like the trickle of water...Do not go, do not go, do not go…"

I did like the slow buildup to the arrival of all the characters at the manor; however, the story takes off when all the characters get to the manor. The authors do a great job of making the manor come alive. There were some surprises throughout the book, which helped keep my interest. The manor's menacing macabre atmosphere was palpable, almost as if the manor took on a life of its own.

"It was a massive brick and stone fortress. Wickedly pointed spires topped each peak of the roof…the cut stones gleamed coldly in the fading light, with the entire structure the color of bone…the rain-splotched stone seemed to be oozing some dark material from the heart of the fortress…primal and ectoplasmic."

The plot line's basis was well thought out and reasonably well-executed, but what made this book more interesting for me was the characters. I loved the push and pull between the two main characters. What I didn't like was the romance between Beatrice and James. It felt forced, campy, and a bit out of place. I am not opposed to romance in horror stories, but I thought it could have been written into the plotline more subtly. Also, I would have liked a little more insight into the supporting characters.

Overall, I did enjoy this ominous read and look forward to seeing where these three authors take Beatrice and James on their next eerie adventure. Just a side note, there are many gruesome scenes of death, violence, and the mention of domestic violence.

Fast paced Victorian/gothic read. Beatrix claims to be a psychic but has never had a paranormal experience. That is until she is recruited to investigate a haunted house with a scientist to determine it is haunted, of course it is ! Quick and cute short story !

3.5 stars

The Haunting of the Beatrix Greene was a quick read that had the perfect spooky season vibes. Beatrix Greene made a living as a medium, but it was all an act. With her accomplice Harry, she was invited to spend the night at a haunted manor to answer the question, “are ghosts real?” Before the night was out, Beatrix had a answer.

The Haunting of Beatrix Greene delivered exactly what it promised, a quick easy read with chilling scenes. While it takes a bit more for books to make me uncomfortable, I thought the horror aspect was done well! While I realized this was a novella, I wanted a more of the manor’s history, instead the hauntings happened almost immediately with a very brief explanation as to why it was a site of evil.

With some scares and a light romance, The Haunting of Beatrix Greene will be on everyone’s ‘to read’ list for Halloween next year!

I was intrigued by this as all I knew going in was it was set out like episodes of a TV show.
Despite being intrigued I'm left disappointed by the first half especially. I just didn't feel invested until probably 70%.
Although the second half in general was much better. The ominous atmosphere was there at this point.
The insta love just felt forced and out of place for me. With the book being on the shorter side the characters just have time to build any sort of chemistry. Therefore I just didn't care about them together.
I'm currently unsure if I will pick up any future books in the series as this felt like a drag for half of it. I'm a little worried the next book might be as bad or have unnecessary tropes like insta love that takes me out of the story.

A haunted house, grim and grisly deaths, and a budding romance, The Haunting of Beatrix Greene may have had a slow start but it then quickly captivated my attention with its gripping twists and turns.

Why not 5 starts: some disconnect between chapter tones and wanting to know more detail about the manor's past as well as its draw to people.

This was an enjoyable, spooky read! The Victorian London setting and characters of Beatrix and James immediately captured my attention and held it for the entire book. The story was fast paced and it didn't take long for the creepy vibes to arise and make me internally shudder! I thought the characters had interesting personalities and backstories that were developed quite well despite it being a fairly short book. It was so fun to try and piece together the mystery of Ashbury Manor, and the ending satisfied me! My only critique would be that some things toward the end felt a bit too convenient, and the romance was a little insta-lovey.

This was a perfect read for Halloween. I was so scared that I did not read this book at night. I completed in broad daylight. The suspense and fear in this book builds slowly and almost makes you feel breathless in the end.

Beatrix Greene is a spiritual medium in Victorian England. She makes her living talking to ghosts (which are not real) and soothing the ailing family members of the departed ones. She realizes that there is a threat to her livelihood. The name of the threat is James Walker, who is determined to expose that spiritual mediums are a sham. Beatrix goes to James Walker’s show and he makes her a lucrative offer. He offers her to conduct a seance at the haunted Ashbury Manor.

Ashbury Manor has a dark history spanning across generations. James himself is not truthful about why he is interested in this seance. Greene and Walker are joined by two of their friends and an American photographer. The party of 5 realizes that the seance in this haunted place is a serious and perilous business, with their lives at stake.

A must-read this Halloween!

3.5 A somewhat formulaic horror novella with a little romance. To me, a good horror story is at essence a mystery-- what caused the ghost/haunting/etc. The cause turns out to be interesting, but my problem with it was that it was not explored as much as I wanted. I did like Beatrice and her awesome development in the short amount of time and liked the romance between her and James. If you liked The Haunting of Hill House, this will seem familiar.

A unique and eerie gothic serial! I think this was the perfect Halloween story and I think it’s distribution is remarkably unique in this current time. I am looking forward to seeing more from Beatrix soon!

The Haunting of Beatrix Greene is a victorian, gothic haunted house story told in episodic fashion. It is reminiscent to the classic horror story of spiritual medium, Beatrix, gets invited to a famous manor that turns into a deadly seance. While the novel has the tell tale characters of the sidekick, the skeptical Lord of the manor, and the badass female photographer, there is also twists within and a special guest appearance. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes a good ghostly, gory, and mysterious tale.

Many thanks to Net Galley, Serial Box publishing and the authors for a chance to read and review this book. All opinions are expressed voluntarily.

A book that is perfect for the Halloween, blustery night curled up in a sofa with logs burning in the fireplace...🎃👻🎃👻

OK honestly that is dream scenario for all book addicts, the absolute peace to read a book.

The Haunting Of Beatrix Greene Vol 1 is like an episode series perfect to be telecast to Netflix or Amazon Prime or any OTT platforms.

The prologue of the story runs a chill up the spine with a gruesome scene of murder and mayhem. The chapters are kept short and snappy with events unfolding one after another. The spooky, gothic atmosphere of the manor is exceedingly well done with the darkness permeating every corner of the house.

For a medium who doesn't believe in ghosts, Beatrix aims to provide the answers sought by James Walker, The Lord of Ashbury Manor. Along with Amanda Reynolds, Harry and Stanhope, Beatrix proceeds with the tasks entrusted to her but realizes the extent of the evil presence that rains hell on each and every one of them.

The last segment of the story was bit bizarre with too many things happening and dramatic and one particular scene with Stanhope was utterly ghastly and nightmarish.

Beatrix Greene is an excellent character and her relationship with Harry a delight to read, the romance between Beatrix and James a perfect addition to this tale of good vs evil. I hope their adventures are just beginning and there are many more stories to come.

Thank you to Net Galley for an advanced copy of this book. This was well written. We have a Victorian psychic named Beatrix, a man of nobility with a family secret, and a haunted house. Wonderful mystery and perfect for this time of year. This was one of the best books that I have ever read. Even though there were multiple authors, the story flowed seamlessly.

Thank you so much to NetGalley and Serial Box for the complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

The Haunting of Beatrix Greene is a gothic plot-driven read that you will devour in no time at all.

While, I initially thought that I would struggle with so many authors working on one book; their writing styles were fluid and well structured together.

Beatrix Greene is a character that I would love to read more about after investing so many emotions into her growth. Maybe a season 2 in the future?

The haunting of Beatrix Greene is a fantastically spooky story about a fake medium who comes to realize she actually can channel the dead. It takes place in a haunted house of sorts with a great cast of characters. I loved the flow of the story and the creepy vibe. Beatrix is a wonderful main character, as is Haz her side kick. I am assuming there are more books and cannot wait to read them. Very good stuff!

I raced through The Haunting of Beatrix Greene because it was fast-paced, creepy and very-well written. I thought it would be confusing and weird because chapters were written by different authors but The Haunting of Beatrix Greene was a great story.

Beatrix is a lovely woman. She has been through Hell but still she fights for what’s right. I liked her instantly,
I wasn’t sure what to make of James first because he was harsh and rude but when his past was revealed I felt for him and he turned out to be a kind, generous and honorable man.

I hope there will be more books with Beatrix and James.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for my copy.
