🤫 Psst! You ever read something you shouldn't like someone else's emails?
What if you got a boring temp job where you're reviewing emails for a fraud suit and come across some juicy personal emails? Would you maybe take JUST ONE LOOK?!
That's what Cassie does and instead of uncovering fraud she discovers Forest Watts, a high powered partner at the law firm she's being paid to investigate. He seems like the perfect spouse and all around sweet dude. Cassie quickly becomes obsessed with him and molds herself into his "type" after reading about his wife. She then takes a page from Joe Goldberg's book and engineers a "chance" meeting with Forest...and things only get more bonkers from there!
I devoured JUST ONE LOOK because once I started reading I was sucked into Cassie's world and had to know what happened next! If you like unreliable narrators and are a fan of Caroline Kepnes YOU series you will love this one! Cassie is like a female Joe, but maybe less murderous.
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐/5 stars for this addictive treat!
JUST ONE LOOK is released this July 2021 so add it to your TBR now!
Thanks to @netgalley for my ARC copy of this suspenseful thriller
If you are looking at great escapist fiction that will keep you up past your bedtime, I suggest you consider “Just One Look” by Lindsay Cameron. Cassie Woodson was an attorney at a high-profile Manhattan mega law firm when she is given the boot and forced to make ends meet with temp work. She is tasked with the project of reviewing endless documents for a fraud case. The depressing job (and drinking) fuels into her existing depression as she dances on the edge of a nervous breakdown. She becomes intrigued by one of the firm’s senior partners, Forest when she intercepts emails between him and his wife. Although Forest appears to be happily married, Cassie is convinced he is going to rescue her from her misery. To get him to fall in love with her, she begins to imitate his wife, Annabelle. Before the reader knows it, Cassie goes into stalker mode in her desire to make Forest hers.
I love books with unreliable narrators and you want to know what has made Cassie so desperate. Is she nuts or can she be saved? I thought the author did a good job in keeping the reader on her toes and not diverging too much information at once. Cassie is not necessarily a sympathetic character (none of the characters are especially likable) but this is not that type of novel. Instead, if you are seeking something authentic, I suggest you give “Just One Look” a try.
Thanks to Lindsay Cameron, Random House/Ballantine and NetGalley for providing a copy in exchange for my honest review.
Yes, I loved this book. Very unpredictable and filled with twists. The main character Cassie is really messed up but in a good way? I don't know, you will have to read this book and find out for yourself. I highly recommend to anyone who loved, "You" by Caroline Kepnes and to others who enjoy unique thrillers.
Thank you so much to NetGalley for the chance to read and review this title.
Stalk much?
Cassie Woodson fell from grace at the law firm where she was previously employed. One thing led to another, and there was blood and a camera pointed her way.
So now, she’s moving on...working as a temp at another law firm. Her job: Spending endless hours reviewing emails that may or may not lead to involvement in a fraud suit. BORING...until she finds and reads a selection of emails from law firm partner Forest Watts to his wife, Annabelle. Cassie sees how well he treats his wife, and can’t help picturing herself as his next love interest. Some things never change.
After all, “Eyes aren’t the windows to the soul. Emails are.”
As you may have guessed, Cassie is a bit (ahem) unhinged. She’s been through a lot and just wants someone to love, and for that someone to love her just as much.
This thriller starts out on the slower side, and can be a bit OTT, but it becomes really intriguing as things progress. Author Lindsay Cameron does a great job increasing the suspense as we learn more about Cassie’s background and her interactions with other people.
A compelling side story emerges that brings out the human aspect of Cassie, and it’s a pleasant surprise to see how it ties into the overarching plot.
Overall, this a fun and entertaining (and slightly devious) read that I think many other genre fans will enjoy. It’s not entirely original, but it’s best to just go with it and have fun with it.
3.5 stars

Just One Look is about Cassie, a lawyer who used to work in a big New York firm, but now is working as a legal temp due to a personal issue at her prior job. While reviewing emails for her job, she comes across personal correspondence from one of the firm's partners, mostly to his wife. She is so drawn into their lives, to the point that Cassie wants their life, specifically she wants the husband, Forest. Cassie's focus turns from her work to learning all she can about Forest, so she can make him hers. The story follows her actions and what happens once she finally meets him.
“Just One Look” is a thriller I immediately could not put down. Readers will be completely sucked into this storyline. This will appeal to fans of Caroline Kepnes’ YOU books. Cassie could be “You’s” Joe Goldberg’s sister. They are both crazy stalkers, you sometimes can’t help rooting for. At first, I thought I was reading another stalker story, but then the plot takes a twisted turn and not everything is as it appears. The suspense ramps up, the pace quickens and I was more eager to get to the reveal at the end and boy was I shocked at the twist! On top of all the suspense with her attempts to insert herself into Forest’s life, you also have the mystery of what happened at her previous job that she was forced to leave. Cameron shines at giving just enough hints and flashbacks to keep you quickly flipping the pages because you just have to know what Cassie did. Cassie’s perspective was enjoyable to read. It was so interesting to read a book from the perspective of the crazy person. I enjoyed her sarcastic responses to the people around her. Cameron did a great job creating a multi-faceted and humorous voice despite the creepy and unpredictable nature of her actions. The characters were very interesting and well developed. “Just One Look” held my attention from page 1 all the way to the end. This book really makes you think about your online presence and what is out there for people to see. This was my first book by Lindsay Cameron and I loved it.
Thank you to Netgalley and Ballantine for providing me with the digital ARC in exchange for my honest review.
Just One Look is one of the books that you keep telling yourself you're going to only read one more chapter and you get so sucked in, you're unable to put it down until it's over.
When we first meet Cassie, she's officially at rock bottom after losing her job and starting a temp position reading correspondence in a fraud suit. Before long, her obsession takes hold, and we begin to see her true nature. We also learn what happened to cause her to lose her job. While we don't learn it all at once, it comes out it spurts throughout the book.
Lindsay Cameron does a fantastic job convincing the reader that not only is Cassie obsessive, but definitely has an addictive personality, she might also be a bit crazy.
One thing you won't see coming? The twists. I never expected any of it and was completely shocked at the end.
Not only is this a great modern-day thriller, but it should also be a good reminder to be careful what you include in your emails.
This book was so eerily addicting.
I did get a little bit of a “you” vibe from this. Only because it was crazy and obsessive! I loved the book!
Thank you so much Netgalley for allowing me to read great authors that I haven't read before. "Just one look" was full of twists and turns and captivated my attention from the first page. This book is pure voyeurism and suspense. Not only was it a great read but I wouldn't mind seeing it on the big screen because it's a a suspense thriller.
Wow what an interesting, crazy ride!! Often with psychological thrillers you find yourself reading the same story with different details but this one was unlike any storyline I’ve read before. I didn’t see the end coming at all and the entire book was super consuming and suspenseful. Looking forward to the Lindsay Cameron’s next one!
Just One Look is a twisty thriller told from the perspective of a stalker. If you enjoyed, "The Photographer" and "YOU", this book is for you!
Cassie Woodson is a disgraced attorney working as a temp reviewing files for a high profile case. The work is tedious and mind-numbing until she discovers emails from a firm partner showing up in her review files. She becomes obsessed with the partner and his beautiful wife. Things then begin to spiral.
It was fun reading from the perspective of the stalker and having them be the protagonist. It was cringe-worthy at many moments and the characters were all unlikeable, except Dalton. I enjoyed his character and rooted for him the most. The first half of the story was slower paced but really kicked into high gear the last half. It makes you think twice about all the information online that could put you in a bad situation.
I basically devoured this book in almost one sitting, so it's definitely a page turner! It's a bit of a cross between "You" and "Girl on the train". The protagonist is so cringe but you can't help but also feel sorry for her too because she had many difficulties in her life with the people around her. This book also makes you think about how much personal information is online!
This was *increasingly creepy* throughout, and a quick read for me. I felt like the story was a little more convoluted than necessary - a couple of the subplots could’ve easily been cut with the same big conclusion and it would’ve been more impactful. Like a lot of twisty books, there are a lot of red herrings that ultimately don’t add a lot but aren’t terrible either. Like not love!
Reimagining You from a female perspective and setting the book in a (very familiar to the author) world of corporate law, this is the thriller to make you paranoid about what you put in your emails.
You never know who might read those and sometimes just one look is enough to destroy a life.
Cassie Woodson is on a downward spiral, her father died and some initially unspecified occurrence at her former law office has resulted in her singleness, very public firing and a subsequent media infamy. Now she is drinking her meals and plodding away at a soul devastating temp job. And then…ta da.. a bright light. In a form of a perfect couple, Forest and Annabelle Watts, whose loving email exchanges she ends up reading. The admiration quickly gives way to obsession and soon it isn’t enough to just read and dream, soon Cassie decides to actually go for it. To steal her perfect man Cassie will need to become his perfect woman…Annabelle. A prohibitively expensive and challenging task, btu hey, that’s what credit cards are for. The rest is a different manner altogether, good thing Cassie is so adept at lying, because a tangled web of lies she has to weave indeed. One that’s all to easy to get tripped up in.
So You it isn’t. But then again it doesn’t need to be, it has all the right elements to get published and thrive in the current thriller obsessed market anyway. And much like You it does have a certain compulsive reading quality to it. The thing is Cassie’s no Joe Goldberg, she’s just a mess, she doesn’t have a certain psychopathic charisma and she doesn’t get likeable or at least easier to understand until much later in the novel. Much like in You the social connotations are very front and center here, the dangers of social media, the obscene amounts of personal information people so stupidly present to the world, it isn’t as wryly done as in You, but it’s there. There’s also an added bonus in a way of a mystery, a corporate law/potential murder mystery, just so you can get a nice genre prerequisite plot twist in the end.
Maybe I’m doing this book a disservice by comparing it to the oh so excellent You. Shall we do The Fatal Attraction instead? Ok, here you go, Just One Look is The Fatal Attraction for the modern age. Thriller fans who prefer their protagonists on the less likable thoroughly unhinged side and their romance tinged with obsession should enjoy this one. Thanks Netgalley.
Wow. This was a book that I flew through. Lindsay Cameron did a wonderful job creating a cringe-worthy character who you couldn’t help but root for.
Cassandra Woodson, a disgraced corporate attorney who is sadly working as a temp in a big-law firm, comes across some personal emails from one of the partners. You all know how difficult it is to take “just one look”. Before you know it, things are spiraling out of control.
I had Flight Attendant vibes with this one, as Cassandra struggles greatly with alcoholism. We are watching her slowly make poor decisions, even as she thought she was setting things right & creating the perfect life. I would recommend for a quick suspenseful read with a great twist!
This read was a fun read if you enjoy creepy stalker vibes. It also had plenty of twists and turns that kept me reading until the very end. If you are a fan of “You” you will most likely enjoy this read and want more.
Thanks to Random House Publishing - Ballantine and NetGalley for a copy to honestly review.
Whoa, this was almost like "You" but with a female view which was kinda cool to read. I had started to read this book one day while waiting to pick up my son from baseball and I couldn't stop. I mean, I stopped long enough to drive my son and one of his friends home from practice SAFETLY. Once we got home, I ordered out and sat down to finish the book. Before I knew it, it was 12:30 am, that is how into this book I was. There could have been an earthquake for all I know and I wouldn't have known. it.
This is one helluva read with an insane amount of creep factor that is named Cassie. If you look up F'up in the dictionary, I'm willing to bet there would be a picture of her (or of a girl) with her name under it!
I don't want to give a lot of way, but the characters are dark and funny and the story line is INSANE!! Just One Look sucks you in and doesn't let you leave!
Thank you to #NetGalley and Ballatine Books for the arc in exchange for my review.
Cassie Woodson is crazy. Like, unhinged. We don't know why she got booted from her last attorney position and is stuck working a soul-sucking temp job doing document review, but I spent the early part of this book dying to find out.
For most of the book, I thought Cassie was just "waaaaay too much". She so badly wanted to immerse herself in the life of Forest Watts and would do anything to make it happen. Yes, I mean ANYTHING. It honestly made me squirm to read just how far she was willing to go. But I couldn't wait to find out where all of this went, so I COULD NOT STOP READING. Just One Look was a fast and wild ride, one that I thoroughly enjoyed.
I received an ARC from NetGalley in exchange for my honest review.
The characters are entirely unlikable, but the author did a good job still keeping me engaged in the story. I enjoyed the idea of the emails and the lack of privacy. There was also a good mystery to solve and definitely had an ending that left me a little surprised. The book overall had a good pace and was fun to read. Only thing that effected my rating is the believability of it all.
3 solid stars!
Fans of the Joe Goldberg,"YOU" series are going to L O V E this book.
This is basically YOU, but with a female protagonist and a little more back story thrown in.
The synopsis drew me in...just a peek at someone's private email and then weird stuff starts to happen.
As a nosy b*tch myself, don't mind if I do.
But as with other stories like this, I was a bit bored but the mundaneness that is stalking - watch/read/repeat. If that appeals to you, and you loved You,(I did not) you will eat this book up.
The writing is terrific and this was an easy one to fly through!
A big thanks to NetGalley and Random House Publishing Group - Ballantine for the ARC and wanting my honest opinion!
I am so happy that this novel lived up to my expectations!! Just as creepy and thrilling as I wanted it to be. The characters are crazy but in a way that makes the novel that much more interesting.
