Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for providing me with an advanced copy in exchange for an honest review.
I love this series, mostly because of the really intriguing world building. The dragons and order, the Fae and chaos, the Library and their Language.... it's all so fun!
You know what wasn't fun? The first 60% of this book. I struggled through it. To be fair, it could have been my reading mood, but I always love these, even when I'm in a slump, so I don't think that was the case. I think it was just the slow start.
Luckily, the last half of the book kicked it up a notch, and really threw things into the fun chaos that follows Irene like a stalker. She's a trouble magnet, and the end of this book finally gives us a reason why.
Cogman, you wily minx, you've done it again. You upped the ante, raised the stakes, brought the thunder.
Overall, I give it four stars.
This book was received as an ARC from Berkley Publishing Group - Ace in exchange for an honest review. Opinions and thoughts expressed in this review are completely my own.
I was beyond ecstatic when I heard there was another installment of The Invisible Library and not only is this my favorite series but I have never read a series on a library that makes my heart race and that there is an adventure everywhere you turn. This time, Irene has a new trainee and everyday is hard for this trainee until Irene finds out someone is after her and the new Fae and learning by doing is all they can do. From one thing after another, they manage to stay afloat and escaping might be the last thing on their mind because not only their fate is at risk but the fate of the Invisible Library itself is at stake too and Irene will stop at nothing to fade this off and save everyone even if her life depends on it. My jaw was so hard to close and it took almost 30 minutes for my heart to stop racing after I put the book down.
We will most definitely add this title to our Sci-Fi collection at our library. That is why we give this book 5 stars.
So this one fell in my lap, and it sounded like a very interesting premise. I had no idea it was book 7 in a series, or I would not have requested it. I absolutely hate jumping into a series mid-stream, but I went ahead anyway.
By a seventh book, it is implied that there is going to be a lot of lore and backstory in a series, and this was different. I quite enjoyed the summary device at the beginning, but felt like there was going to be a lot I was going to miss. Oh well, now I have a new series to pick up.
Ms. Cogman does a remarkable job of character development, but, for me, the worldbuilding was a tad scattered. While Irene Winters is definitely the central character of this book, I felt that there were a variety of sub-stories that were not formed fully enough to my liking.
The Dark Archive was a quick read, but not the most satisfying of reads. I would have very much liked to see Vale’s story fleshed out a bit more in this book, and the antagonists did not seem to occupy a lot of the primary focus.
My thoughts may change after I read the other books in the series, but I can’t really recommend this particular tome as a standalone.
I love these characters and have so enjoyed this series. I love seeing how Cogman gets her characters out of trouble. Irene goes head to head with old foes as she races to discover who is trying to kill them. After several assassination attempts, Irene goes on the offensive, only to discover enemies that should be dead are not. There are several "shocking" reveals in this book. Cogman's descriptions are so vivid it's like you are there with the characters experiencing everything they are. Great Read.
Genevieve Cogman brings us back to the many worlds of librarian Irene and her former apprentice, the dragon Kai. The treaty among dragons, Fae, and the Library that they’re trying to protect is still fragile. Irene’s new apprentice, Catherine, is a Fae who is eager to prove herself, but the training keeps getting interrupted by enemies from Irene’s past trying to kill them. The action is fast-paced, uneasy alliances are made, and big secrets are revealed.
Readers should start at the beginning of the series to fully understand the backstory of this exciting bookish spy series.
More fun with Irene and Kai. A new apprentice for Irene that drives her crazy. And a bombshell reveal! This series just gets better and better!
This is the latest in Cogman's 'library' fantasy series. It's action-packed and resolves some story arcs, but leaves us with new questions about Irene and her past. Great world-building as usual, and a great escape from reality! For those who have read at least some of the previous books. I'm a big fan of this series - it's intelligent and well-written, and the main characters continue to develop.
This is book 7 in the Invisible Library series, meaning no matter what, there will be spoilers for previous books.
First, I adore this series, and this book added a lot to the current lore, and was a blast to read.
Irene, who is now in charge of the truce between the Fae and the Dragons, but complications keep popping up. This time in the form of her lover's/co-truce-keepers crappy brother, a Fae representative that refuses to do as she's told (like any librarian would), and the mysterious return of a dead enemy.
Starting out, this book answered a major question that I have had since the second book in the series and I practically fist-pumped once I realized I was right.
The characters in this series are vivacious, and I really enjoyed what the new characters added and the continued growth of the existing characters. The worlds that Genevieve Cogman creates continue to be vibrant, and each world seems as though it deserves a book of it's own.
I highly suggest reading the full series if only so you can get to this book.
The Dark Archive by Genevieve Cogman, I really wanted to like it however it simply wasn't for me, I think it was well written and a good book, so thank you for giving me a chance with this book.
I know I am biased when it comes to this series, but I just loved The Dark Archive. Every time I think I've figured out the storyline, something unexpected happens and I just gobble it up. With the treaty in place from the previous books, Irene, Kai, and Vale are now joined by Catherine, the Fae niece of Lord Silver. When they go on a retrieval mission, everything goes to pieces and old enemies resurface. This was nonstop fun and mayhem and I am going to be in misery until book 8 comes out in a year. Fantastic read!
Another solid entry in the Invisible Library series. Old enemies resurface and secrets are revealed. Best of all, the core trio of Irene, Kai, and Vale are working together (with Catherine) to investigate just what is going on,
Most of the chapters are still narrated by Irene. But a good chunk are told from other characters' perspectives.
This series is absolutely fabulous, and The Dark Archive is an excellent addition to the Invisible Library series. Cogman has created a world of infinite possibilities with this series, while blending action and adventure seemlessly into a book lovers dream. The main heroine is strong, intelligent, and gets the job done. The main cast of character is diverse, and well fleshed out, and the world itself is amazing, simply because it is one of thousands of settings.
I strongly recommend you start this series from the beginning, because you will be horribly lost if you start here, on book 7, especially in regards to some of the characters that show up in this book.
There isn't a lot to say about this title, because it was exactly what I wanted from another Invisible Library book and I am just as much a fan as I was when I picked up book 1! The characters continue to develop through the various installments and I am blown away by the talent of the author to keep their storylines entangled, yet expertly curated.
I read this book very quickly, mostly due to the fact that I was highly anticipating this title. It was everything I wanted and more from this series! I can't wait for another installment! These books are a blend of espionage, mystery, fantasy, and literature all wrapped into a complex world of dragons, fae, librarians, archetypes, and so many more elements! There is always a hint of romance threaded through the narrative of each book (this installment is no different) and it is so satisfying to know it is there, but it isn't being shoved into your face during an action scene.
As always, Genevieve Cogman has transported me into my dream job as a Librarian and has left me wanting more!
This series just keeps getting better and better. Irene continues to evolve as a character and face more challenges to both her physical being and her own sense of morality. The new character of Catherine offers another look at what it means to be a Librarian. Out of all the books in the series, this book by far has the most interesting plot and the most intriguing ending. Cannot wait to get this on the shelves of my library.
Another exciting entry into the Invisible Library series that does not disappoint! A whirlwind of conspiracies and hidden plotting impedes Irene and leads to her making some seriously dangerous discoveries.
This book sets up what feels like something much bigger in the IL series, and I'm excited as ever to see where it leads. A great pick for fans of the series!
Imogene and Kai are back for more adventures in the Dark Archive, 7th in the series. Now that Imogene has a Fae apprentice, she must teach Catherine what it takes to be a Librarian Spy, but things go wrong as usual when procuring a manuscript. Will they get out of trouble this time? Genevieve Cogman has channeled every Librarian's dream in this series with imagination and intriguing imagery combining books, technology and chaos. The series just keeps getting better as it goes and this book does not disappoint.
Thank you to NetGalley and Berkley Publishing Group for providing me with an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I somehow missed that this book was far along in a series until I got into it and realized there was significant backstory that I was missing and that makes it a little tricky to review. In the end, while there were certainly things about the characters and the worlds Cogman has built that I didn’t know, I still enjoyed the book. In fact, I enjoyed it to the point that I’m starting back at the beginning so I can truly experience in its full glory. If a book makes you want to sign up for a series, then it has done its job and been thoroughly entertaining.
These books are so much fun to read, I can hardly wait for the next one in the series. This time we find Irene, Kai and Vail involved in a rash of kidnap and attempted murder schemes against them. Vail, the great detective is trying to get to the bottom of the mystery but while he and Irene are investigating; she stumbles on a locked door and when she gets it open she sees Lord Guantes who she killed in the last book but very much alive for the moment. This leads the gang on a terrifying chase along with the help of Irene's new Fae apprentice,Catherine, and Kia's older brother, Yuan to find who is at the bottom of all the threats. The book is very fast-paced and is hard to put down. It also seems a bit short and not as filled out, fluffed up as previous books in the series. I do not think it could be read as a stand-alone there is too much background that would be missing.
The book is an enjoyable read and I look forward to more adventures with Librarian Irene and her crew.
I just love this series. It's smart and fun and...smart...I'm a little shocked there have been so many in the series as they flow together remarkably (I think I read the first 3 without interruption and now think of most of the early happenings as the events of one book).
I just finished my ARC and fans of the series will be glad to know -
This is the "library book" you've been waiting for! Cogman has revitalized the series completely in 300 pages. After the sixth book, I wasn't sure I still cared about these characters, but "The Dark Archive" reminded me why I loved it to start.
All your favorite characters are back for a fast-paced adventure that will change everything. This book feels like the start of a series rather than the 7th installment. There are multiple plots, narrow escapes, mad scientists, and more to keep the pages turning. Plus, a game-changing secret (the one you guessed several books ago) is finally revealed and a larger plot/arc is teased in the epilogue.
I do wish the romance would kick up a notch or several. A good love scene couldn't go wrong at this point. AND there is still so much more plot to explore! For instance, have you ever wondered what is UP with whoever is running this library? It's always seemed shady. What do we really know about the politics of the library itself or those who run it? We only know what Irene knows. Very little has ever been revealed....
