Hex: The Apprentice is a great YA book about a girl named Robin who learns she is a hexmeister. The story revolves around her relationship with her Gram and learning the Madder business. I absolutely loved the story. The setting was perfect and the characters were deep enough all around to make me care about them. Robin and her Gram were really special and their relationship makes the book. It is a very quick read but well worth your time. I highly recommend it. Hopefully this is a series, it has a lot of potential.

Definitely a middle grade book. Not a whole lot of depth, fairly light. I feel like a lot of the story was quickly glossed over and left to the reader to guess at. Like the father's death. there are one or two sentences that allude to Robyn having some guilt and sadness about it, then *poof* onto the next thing. I still have no idea what happened to him. We don't really know why the mom up and went to London. Sounds like she is a professor, but still odd how it's glossed over. I did enjoy the big ending scene but the revelation on the villain felt super forced and cheesy to me. Honestly, the reasoning that was yelled out sounded like the petulant whining of a teenager not a grown adult. Not bad for a middle grade book, but could use some more depth and expounding to keep the reader interested.

Hex is a light-hearted and pleasurable journey into the life of Robin, a teenage girl living in a small town. Living with her Gram, Robin navigates high school, hockey, and a new life as an apprentice Hexenmeister, gifted with the talent and responsibility to create protective charms to help all those living around. While learning her new craft, Robin must also balance friendships, new teachers, and her romantic life (such as it is).
