I was excited to receive a copy of this book to review as Nellie Bly has always been such an interesting figure to read and learn about.
However, the formatting of this book is horrendous! I personally read on my iPad, I tried reading this both on the NetGalley shelf app and the blue fire app. I then waited a month or so and tried those exact steps over again, and still, it was unreadable. The text is so blurry I was straining my eyes way too much to the point that I was giving myself a migraine. I couldn’t continue and had to DNF the book.
It’s a shame the publisher hasn’t corrected the formatting issue based on the reviews I’ve read. It’s not fair to the author, illustrators, and reviewers, especially with all the low reviews.
I’d rate this a 3 star, just to stay neutral as I currently can’t review what I’m not able to read.
I don’t think it's fair to the creators of the book to have their Goodreads rating affected by the formatting issue on NetGalley, therefore, I will not be officially giving this book a star rating on Goodreads.
I would be interested in purchasing and reading a copy of the book should it become available to me in the future.

The story seems very interesting I really wanted to know more about Nellie Bly but it was practically impossible to read it on my kindle, I am sorry I could not finish it, but I think I will buy the book later after is release.
After having been recently introduced to the beautiful world of graphic novels, I have been tearing through as many as I can get my hands on. When seeing The Incredible Nellie Bly by Luciana Cimino, I was quite intrigued. I thoroughly enjoyed this "visual biography" of the life of an incredible woman way beyond her time. Though the book was slightly hard to read, solely based on the nature of the e-book/graphic novel combo, the book was eye-opening and informative.
Nellie Bly is one of those names that sound familiar, but somehow always evade me. I’m never completely sure what exactly it was that she did other than someone who fought for women’s rights. I decided that this graphic novel was a perfect way for me to change that and learn more about this incredible lady.
Unfortunately, the graphic novel was a little disappointing. It started off with the fact that the tekst was very difficult to read. I tried the Netgalley Shelf app first, but that was much too small and zooming in merited no results. Therefore, I decided to fire up my laptop and read the novel there, but that wasn’t much better either. After a lot of deciphering, and using the images for clues, I managed to read most of it, though it didn’t do much good for my reading pleasure.
Additionally, I was a little disappointed to see it was all in black and white. My favourite thing about graphic novels is the art work. Marvelling at the images and getting lost in a story told by colour is what usually makes me fall in love with these types of books. That didn’t happen for me in this case.
The story itself was pretty good, though. I definitely reached my goal of learning about Nellie Bly and her achievements. Whenever she is mentioned somewhere from now on I’ll know exactly who she is and what she did. I think it’s a briljant story to put out there and I commend the author fort hat at least.
Thank you to NetGalley and Abrams for kindly providing me with a digital copy of this book for review.
I was absolutely over the moon to receive an e-arc of this book to review. I have read Nellie Bly’s journalistic account of her 10 days in a mad house and found her a fascinating person. I was really looking forward to learning more about her and seeing how her story would be presented in graphic novel format.
The cover of the book is truly stunning and I would be heading straight for it if I saw it on a bookshop shelf. I imagine that the print copy when it is published and all the artwork inside is colourised, will equally be as impressive.
The disappointing thing for me, which other viewers have mentioned also, is that the text in the review copy is very hard to read and I feel I missed an awful lot due to not being able to decipher the words. I think the art work is really impressive though- I particularly appreciated all the facial close ups that really illustrate all the different emotions perfectly. I think it also had a lovely nostalgic feel to it- there’s one image of Nellie sitting on a bench in front of Central Park that I found particularly stunning.
Will certainly be looking for this when it comes out in print as I feel it has the potential to make all kinds of top recommendations lists, it just hasn’t quite fulfilled that potential in the e-arc format though. I do however fully appreciate the chance to review this and thank the author and publishers accordingly.
Like many other readers, I was thrilled to be approved for this graphic novel about one of my heroes! However, the digital ARC is nearly impossible to read. The illustrations are lovely and I am sure this is a great book, but i cannot give it more stars. Hopefully these problems will be solved before release, as this is an important book!
Perhaps it was the version I downloaded, but I wasn't able to read any of the text in the graphic novel. The font/writing was too light to be able to clearly read it. Perhaps it will be better in the full color version that will be released in March 2021
An interesting look into the life of Nellie Bly, a famous journalist, investigator, feminist, and philanthropist. (As the title states.) Unfortunately, the digital arc copy I received from NetGalley wasn't clear enough for me to see most of the writing in the book, but the illustrations were great and what I could read sounded interesting. I had already read "Ten Days in a Mad-House" by Nellie Bly, so I have already learned quite a bit about her time spent in a mad-house in 1887. I had not previously known about her philanthropist endeavors, and this added more depth to my knowledge of her. I look forward to read the printed version when it's out so I can get the full story.
I will not be rating this title publicly as the ebook I received is incredibly difficult to read. I don’t feel I can get a clear perception of the book.
The author Luciana Cimimo has done a commendable job in writing down this brilliant piece of work. She is a master storyteller and it is very much evident from the way she has developed the narrative in a sequential manner. The writing style and choice of words are absolutely fantastic. Overall, it was a fascinating experience. I give this work 4 stars and recommend everyone to give it a try.
Happy Reading.
My thoughts may change if I see a finished copy of this, but the ARC was disappointing. Not the lack of colour, though it would have been nice to get more of a sense of the finished product, but throughout the text was incredibly hard to read, impossible at times. This greatly detracted from the reading experience. I also found the underlying story quite flat, and felt particularly at the start that it was dragging on far too long when I had just wanted to learn more about Nellie herself.
I really wanted to read this book and I was very intrigued by the graphic novel format, but unfortunately I just couldn't read my copy. The quality of the images was so bad that no matter which device/platform I used I just couldn't read a single word of this book, which is a bummer because I had a feeling I was really going to enjoy this story (journalism/feminism are two of my biggest passions).
I was also really intrigued by the fact that this is a translation from Italian and I am translator (from English to Italian), so I was really curious to see how the translation had been done.
I know it's not the authors fault that the copy was not readable and I've see other's reviews about having similar issues, for that reason my rating isn't really correspondent of the content of the book but of the quality of the file.
I hope I'll get to read this soon.
I think it will be great in print or on Adobe Digital Editions, but as an ebook it is a bust. I am familiar with famed American investigative journalist (May 5, 1864-January 27, 1922) Nellie Bly's Ten Days in a Mad-House and Bly vs. Bisland: Beating Phileas Fogg in a Race Around the World and even a short biography or two so I thought that it would be a simple fun read, but the challenge of enlarging print and illustrations in an ebook format were beyond my patience. I am sad about that, but I DO plan to get the print edition when available.
I requested and received a free ebook copy from ABRAMS ComicArts via Netgalley.
This was such a fun read! I had never heard of Nellie Bly before. I never learned about her in school, so this was a fascinating way to get to know her life. I can't wait to read this as a physical copy when it's all finished with the colouring!
I've already read a few books about Nellie Bly, including the terrific EIGHTY DAYS about her around-the-world voyage, and a graphic novel about her seemed a natural. Sad to say, as others have mentioned, the ARC of this book was practically impossible to read. I tried it in Kindle, in Aldiko Reader, and in PocketBook, which was recommended to me by NetGalley. In all three instances, the text was nearly impossible to read, and I finally couldn't stand squinting at my tablet any longer.
I have to say of what I could make out of the story that I wished the author had just stuck to the story of Nellie Bly rather than including the framing story of the 1920s college student who interviews her and who is still fighting against sexual discrimination. Elizabeth Cochran (Nellie) had an interesting enough life that I didn't feel this gimmick was necessary, plus the whole idea seemed a little corny. I realized I'd done a similar thing in 9th grade when our class was asked to do "creative book reports." I had a classmate help me: she played a girl who didn't know where to start in a school report about Louisa May Alcott, and I "appeared" to her as the "ghost" of Alcott to tell her something about my life. I think readers are smart enough to get the story of Cochran's struggle to be accepted in what was then considered a "man's field" and that it is still pertinent today without adding an extra layer to it.
The file I had did not display well on my Fire Tablet. I could see that some of the graphics matched the Nellie Bly story I read as a child; I only wish that I had been able to read this on.e
Thank you to the publisher for giving me a free copy of this comic in exchange for an honest review.
I quite enjoyed this. I think the story had a lot of potential but failed in the execution of it all. i thought the story got quite dull even though I should actually be intrigued at the time of reading this. Also it didn't help with the fact that the text was really hard to read after I downloaded the copy it was pretty blurry and ruined the flow of reading.
I liked the art style but I can't rate a book high purely on the art style the book has to have a good story too. I found it lacking in aspects hence the sad rating. Hope to see a better copy from this author in the future
Im pretty new to comic books, so wheni saw this book offered on Netgalley, i jumped at the opportunity to request it. Unfortunately as other readers have also mentioned, it was impossible for me to read this book due to the low quality of the text. I read the preface and got a gist of who Nellie Bly was, wish I could read the book as well. Based on the illustrations and the preface I can tell this is an informative book.
This sounds like it will be a great graphic novel when it’s published. It was almost impossible for me to read the word bubbles, so I can really only speak to the illustrations. There was a note that they will be in color in the finished book, which is definitely preferable. I thought the illustrations were well done and I really wish I could have read the text! The story of Nellie Bly’s life sounds fascinating, and I like how it’s being told through a different perspective. I gave this book four stars based on the illustrations, and the forward and notes that describe a bit more about what this book will entail. It’s hard to give it a fair review without being able to read the word bubbles though.
Thanks for this ARC from Netgalley and the publisher for my honest review.
I was so happy to receive this e-ARC which I sent a request for to the publisher because I wanted to discover who was Nellie Bly. Instead of reading a large long biography, I could learn about this great figure with this graphic novel. The problem was that I could not read the text in the bubbles or outside like the in the newspapers also, the second half of the pages were cut so I could not see even the images. I'm sorry but I have to put this book in the DNF section because I could not carry on with this bad quality.
