I love the idea of presenting Greek mythology in the graphic novel format, and this one is quite well done. It gives a look at Athena as an idea, and at some of the best stories about her. Definitely good for a library that is looking to entice lots of kids.
This graphic novel adapts a variety of greek myths, especially the ones that heavily feature Athena.
A very easy-to-follow version of the usually confusing Greek Myths. I like that it's centered around Athena, it helps focus the stories a bit rather than making it so overwhelming. The drawings are loose and detailed, which I really like.
A great book for fans of Greek Myths & Athena!
Thanks to NetGalley for providing an advanced reader copy in exchange for an honest review.
I picked this up because I love the Greenbergs’ art & storytelling style, and this was no exception.
I’m not a huge Greek mythology geek, although I do enjoy reading about it. This isn't really a retelling or feminist changing of the original stories -- it's more just a straight telling/explaining in simple words that are appropriate for pretty young audiences. Overall, this was an enjoyable quick read.
This book wasn't exactly what I was expecting. It may have been more enjoyable if I had a physical copy, but reading it from the app on my phone was near impossible. It is not suited for a digital format. The text was tiny and the pictures weren't always where I thought they would be. And I didn't really understand what the book was supposed to be about.
I agree with a fellow reviewer's description that the authors didn't seem to know whether they wanted to do a full graphic novel or not, but it does feel fairly disjointed. I admit the digital ARC is formatted oddly, so the book may very well work better in print. I will still be purchasing this for my library, as Greek mythology is still a great circulator and there's nothing wrong with this book, it's just not that there are other and better options already out there.
This grpahic novel is a great way to introduce young readers, especially young girls, to both Athena and many other Greek myths and figures. The author makes Athena spunky, smart, and relevant as a potential role model for young girls today. The illustrations are beautiful and breathe new life into ancient and complicated mythology, making it much more palatable for its intended audience.
I expected more from this. First of all, it was a weird mix between a graphic novel and a short story and it seems like the author didn't even know which side to choose. I really hoped to learn something new but it was clearly written for a younger audience and just repeated popular myths.
*I received an e-ARC from the publisher in exchange for an honest review. Athena: Goddess of Wisdom and War is set to be published June 8, 2021*
This graphic novel follows the story of Athena from her non-conventional birth to the quests she assisted our known heroes of Greek mythology on. It was a quick read and covered several stories - while definitely being written for a younger audience, I still felt as though I gained more knowledge of many different myths (I’ve been on a Greek mythology kick recently, and this was the perfect book to pick up as a guide of sorts). The authors certainly took liberties to tell a friendlier version of the myths and to highlight the power of women, so it would make a great introduction for anyone wanting to learn about Greek mythology, or a light, fun read for anyone wanting a feminist spin on the tales.
Thank you ABRAMS Kids, Amulet Books, and NetGalley for the e-ARC of Athena by Imogen Greenberg in exchange for an honest review.
Athena is a graphic novel that contains an overview and information about several mythological events and concepts that involve Athena. Although the title and description appear to focus on her, and she is definitely in the book I thought that the wide range of topics made Athena more of a side character than the main focus. That will definitely benefit teachers and parents who are looking for supplemental reading material for kids to continue learning about Greek and Roman Mythology!
The illustrations and comic dialogue were witty and fun and I hope that the final illustrations are as bright and colorful as the cover and brief illustrated images included in the e-ARC. Mythology can be a bit dry to read and learn, so it is great that this can be used to hook kids on the stories and prepare them for/expand on knowledge learned though written texts.
I'd recommend Athena as a great addition to school, classroom, and public libraries along with at-home collections for kids.
This comic tells the major myths from Athena's life starting at her "birth" from Zeus' head to her relationship with Odysseus. The graphic novel begins with descriptions of the key characters in the novel.
What I liked:
*I really enjoyed the illustrations in this novel. My copy was black and white and the sneak peek of the color is beautiful.
*I thought this was a great primer on some of the major Greek myths. I wish I had read this before reading some of the popular retellings that are circulating as it is has been a LONG time since I read any Greek myths. This would be perfect for the target audience.
*I liked that the illustrator used a variety of splashes and panel sizes to convey the messages of the story.
What I didn't like:
*The text was challenging to read as it is was in all caps.
*There wasn't a map included in this book which I think is crucial for understanding the myths.
*While I appreciated the number of stories about Athena's life, I would have liked some kind of closure. As a young reader, I'd wonder - is Athena still around? I know she's immortal so what happened to her?
*For the young audiences, I think it is important for the author to spell out what makes a God a God and the difference between a God and a demigod.
Overall, I enjoyed this book and I think that the target audience would love it as an introduction to Greek myths.
Thanks to Abrams Kids Publishing and NetGalley for an advanced copy of this graphic novel in exchange for an honest review.
Mythology is such a popular subject in my Media Center. The portrayal of Athena in a graphic novel format will delight my readers. The exciting adventures of the powerful Goddess of Wisdom add up to a fun-filled romp throughout the pages of this book. The strong depiction of Zeus's daughter and her determination to get what she wanted was so well done. So enjoyuable!
This was a fun introduction to the Greek goddess, Athena. This is perfect for middle graders. The author presents the stories in a humorous way with fun dialogue and illustrations. I laughed out loud a few times while reading. I can't comment too much on the artwork because the advanced copy wasn't in color, but I hope the colors are as vibrant as the cover art. I look forward to reading the next book in this series.
This was so awesome! I'm excited to see this book in person. I'm already so obsessed with powerful goddesses, but to see Athena illustrated so beautifully was so awesome. While I wasn't able to read the entire book (the file didn't want to load past page 15), I'm obsessed with what I read.
Athena by Imogen Greenberg is a great introduction to Athena and some of her stories as she dealt with mortals and her fellow gods. I also liked the format of the book, with shorter stories mixed in with graphic novel style panels. I could see teachers using this type of format to introduce storytelling and/or Greek mythology.
Educational and creative, "Athena: Goddess of Wisdom and War" offers Greek mythology to younger audiences in an enjoyable-to-consume medium - a graphic novel. Using a modern art style that efficiently balances the information-heavy narrative, the Greenbergs successfully creative a book for young readers that is sure to both educate and entertain! While the jumps between stories can be jarring and the connections between them lost, the choice of Athena-based stories is excellent - ranging from foundation-building (with stories of origin and how things came to be) to connection-making (featuring well-known mythological characters such as Medusa and Helen of Troy). This is an easy recommendation for young readers who seek an introduction to the mythological tales surrounding one of the most relevant Greek figures: Athena, the goddess of wisdom and war.
A great look into the Goddess Athena and her many adventures and deeds. This is a wonderful collection filled with fun and cool illustrations! The stories are short and easy to understand. I would definitely recommend this for young readers as its a great introduction to the Goddess of Wisdom, War, and Courage!
5/5
Athena, written by Imogen Greenberg and illustrated by her sister Isabel Greenberg, is a perfect, educational and endearing rendition of some quintessential Greek myths. I even learned some things and insight that my college Greek classics class had failed to mention.
The writing is so fun and it truly gives a fresh spin to some already well-known stories. I thoroughly enjoyed every page and every illustration. I would love to see more of different gods and goddesses, Greek or otherwise.
I truly hope this book doesn’t get lost in the uncountable versions of Greek mythology books as this one has something refreshing and lovely to offer that many others do not.
This modern take on the goddess, Athena, is one that will captivate the reader. It's difficult to find engaging tales about the Greek gods, but this one is a keeper! It's perfect for our school library!
This graphic novel was missing a bit of magic compared to a lot of other Greek mythology titles, though big fans will still enjoy it. A collection of stories centering around Athena with black and white illustrations, Athena by Imogen Greenberg is a quick read for 9-12 year olds.
This book looked very interesting which is why I requested it but I was disappointed in the end. I was expecting a fun tale of Greek gods and while this was about the gods it was not fun. This book I believe is aimed at children which wasn’t clear when I started. I was looking forward to accurate myths but these were nothing of the sort. In addition I didn’t enjoy the art style but that’s just a personal preference.
