This little book packs a punch. I've always appreciated and respected Dr. Evans and his wisdom. These prayers are such a gift! Each prayer walks through the ACTS method (adoration, confession, thanksgiving, and supplication), and focuses on a different aspect or characteristic of God and how we can use that to know Him better. While they look simple on the surface, these prayers can really help draw you to the heart of God. This would be a great gift, and a helpful tool for a new believer or someone wanting to deepen their prayer life.
“Prayer is heavenly permission for earthly interference, and it’s communication with God, who longs to be involved with you on a very personal level.”
Another practical tool by Tony Evans! Sometimes we don’t know what to pray, but what matters is that we pray. These guided prayers speak to fifty-five unique attributes of God. This book isn’t designed to be memorized and recited, but to help you when you want to go deeper.
Tony Evans has given us another beautiful book on how to grow closer to God through prayer. I found these prayers to be at differing times comforting, convicting, and encouraging. For this review, I read an ebook, but I liked this book enough that I’m going to purchase a print copy. I’d love to make me these my own prayers and be able to underline and make notes in the print copy. This book shows the author’s heart towards God, and it’s a blessing to the reader.
I received a copy of this book from the publisher. All opinions are my own.
I want to thank the author and NetGalley for gifting me this ebook. This book was so insightful and I enjoyed it so much! I have told all my friends and family about it and I learned so much. I will for sure be reading this book over and over. The cover is beautiful also.
Dr. Evans again gives us strategic biblical tools to help and encourage us to talk to God. There are numerous prayers, each one headed by an attribute of God, Forgiveness, Grace, Mercy and many more. Each one is divided into four parts, adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving and supplication. Each and everyone is encouraging you to pray and talk to God on a consistent basis. This is the type of book that you will want to pick up and refer to it multiple times.
As always, Tony Evans delivers his best. He writes in the introduction, “In this book, Prayers for Knowing God, I’ve given you a multitude of guided prayers based on God’s attributes to help you get to know Him more fully. Numerous of His attributes appear in Scripture, and each one is an expression of who He is and how He relates to you.” And that is what he does. With each attribute of God, Tony Evans leads us in prayers of adoration, confession, thanksgiving and supplication. Mr Evans has the gift of knowledge to which he richly shares. By the end of this book, you will have a much more personal relationship.
rayer is a powerful tool in the problems we face. The core of our problems in our personal lives, homes, churches and societies is a spiritual one. The only way to address it is spiritually. It cannot be done politically, social, economic or even a religious agenda. It is done by a Kingdom agenda.
Prayer is not just for solving our problems but a a tool to know God. How do we know God if we are doing all the talking? Speaking the attributes of God we can begin to know him more. The bible speaks of God's desire to know him. When Moses brought the Israelites out of Egypt it was to know God in the desert. Our problems that we face is any opportunity to know God in those times by his attributes. Each 54 chapters begins with Knowing God through His.. and then the prayer turns in communication with Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving, and Supplication with the particular attribute that we are introduced to.
Taste and see that the Lord is good; blessed is the one who takes refuge in him. Psalm 34:8.
Prayer is my refuge.
There are many books on prayers and I appreciate the resources as I struggle to not let my mind wander. I also want to know God and by learning his attributes it forces me to listen. God is holy. A powerful statement if I listen to the implications of his word and my circumstances.
Prayer is a humbling duty and when practiced, we can unite with God's will and his people.
A special thank you to Harvest House Publishing and Netgalley for the ARC and the opportunity to post an honest review.
Dr. Tony Evans has created a collection of 55 prayers in “Prayers for Knowing God.” Each prayer begins with verses of Scripture around which it centres. These focus on characteristics of God, His Holiness, His Forgiveness, His Mercy, His Grace and so one. Structured around A.C.T.S. (Adoration. Confession. Thanksgiving. Supplication.), it is designed to balance the reader’s prayer pattern, to remind one to praise even one wants to ask, to thank and confess. It is a call to share everything with God whilst fully appreciating everything God is. These guided prayers allow the reader to rest in the wisdom of Scripture and Dr. Tony Evans. His wording of these prayers remind me of the Psalms and brought me such comfort. They reminded me to be gentler with myself and of how big and wide the character of God is. Tony prays braver prayers than I naturally would such as:
“Give me a greater dependence on You to lead me and guide me, because in Your infinite awareness, You know which way I should go.” - From “Prayers for Knowing God” by Tony Evans
His “Confess” prayers highlight parts of me I don’t often think about such as:
“Father, You are near, yet I push You away so very often. You are a caring Father—in fact, You are a perfect Father. And yet I project human frailty and failings onto You in Your role, causing me to doubt You and guard myself from getting too close to You.” - From “Prayers for Knowing God” by Tony Evans
And he words of adoration and supplication are lyrical and inspiring. This is one book I’d love to have in hard copy, to return to and highlight. Throughout the book, Tony’s confidence in God shines and in the storm of COVID-19, I have found reassurance and empathy in these pages. However, if you don’t enjoy formulaic prayers, this one may not be for you. It’s a five out of five on the enJOYment scale and highly recommended!
I think there was gap between my understanding of what this book would offer and what I read in the book. There is a phrase used 'word for word' that I missed, but is perhaps the essence of the book.
Each prayer follows the framework ACTS: Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving and Supplication, This formality in prayer was just not resonate with me. I'm sure there will be others who will enjoy meditating on the content of each prayer and will achieve a deeper connection as a result of this guidance.
My thanks to Harvest House Publishers, Netgalley and the author for my advance reader copy in exchange for an honest review.
Prayers for knowing God
I was imagining something different, but I think people might think that they are the same prayers unless they truly look the book over. If they are already aware of this author and his style, but if you are just in a bookstore and perusing and flipping, you might think, this is the same prayers over and over and put it down.
It just seems to be redundant to use the same three responses. I like the scriptures, but I would definitely prefer to use alternate resources for my usages.
I received a free copy from NetGalley and these are my willingly given thoughts and opinions.
Dr Tony Evans has always been a great teacher and preacher. I have truly enjoyed his books.
My thanks to the publisher for a copy of this book via Net Galley. The opinion here in my own.
This book is exactly as described: prayers for knowing God. It gives you many prayers to help you pray when you just don’t know how or what to pray. The prayers go through the arc of adoration, confession, thanksgiving, and supplication. Prayers for knowing the many attributes of God. A great book anyone looking to deepen their prayer life should own.
Prayers for Knowing God is a wonderful prayer book whether you are a new Christian, elder or somewhere in between. Sometimes we can’t find the words to pray, and even though God knows our hearts, the prayers in this book will guide you to the words you want to say. This can be used daily or as a go-to for certain circumstances that you are dealing with. Dr. Tony Evans is one of my favorite authors/pastors, and you can truly feel his heart for God and people in this book.
I suggest the Appendix B in this book as a wonderful Bible study tool. Together with the prayers, and an open heart, you will be reminded of Gods power and love.
( I received an advanced copy of this book from the publisher for my honest review. Thank you #HarvestHousePublishers )

This was such an encouragement. I used this nearly each day for the last several months of 2020 as part of my morning devotions. It built my faith and encouraged me for who I am in Jesus. Tony's insights went straight to the places in my spirit that needed these thoughts - and the ability to vocalize them. Highly recommend, would encourage others to read and internalize. I already think I will be giving this one as a gift to someone (or more) this year. This book access was granted courtesy of NetGalley in return for an objective review without obligation.
Thank you once again, Dr. Evans. Many of your books and countless of your sermons have led me through difficult times.
I think everyone would agree that 2020 was a very unsettling year. I know Dr. Evans went into 2020 with his world having been turned upside down by the death of his lovely wife in late 2019. I find that many times, I just don't know how or what to pray about a situation or my tumultuous feelings. These 50 prayers have helped me to focus on what I should be focused on -- the immutable aspects of God's character. Even though our society is in turmoil, our days are chaotic, and our hearts are breaking, God remains the same. These prayers reminded me of God's character through it all. I'm thankful for all I've learned about God's character, and I can honestly say my heart is more at peace knowing Who is in control. I highly recommend this book.
I gratefully received a free ARC digital copy of this book through NetGalley and the publisher in exchange for my honest and voluntary opinion.
Prayers for Knowing God by Tony Evans, is a wonderful book that guides and illustrates to you how to direct your prayers and quiet time. It covers many ways of Knowing God more such as through his wisdom, His strength, His Word, etc. and gives scripture so you can back it up with a study of God’s word. Dr. Tony Evan’s prayers and quotes can help you grow closer to our God with prayers of confession and thanksgiving. You will be highlighting page after page.. Such prayers as “Lead me in the level path and show me which direction will lead to the greatest spiritual fruit and impact on others, but I need your wisdom to help me discern how to do that”-- will show you how to go beyond the basic prayers we often give. I would highly recommend this book to anyone wanting have a more personal, deeper prayer-time.
I was given a copy by Harvest House Publishers but the opinion is my own.
Tony Evans is one of my favorite preachers and this book is no exception. One of the best guided prayer devotionals out there - good for new Christians or seasoned believers who are in a dry season.
Thank you Netgalley for the free copy in exchange for an honest review.
Tony Evans is one of my favorite preachers and authors. I was excited to read Prayers for KNowing God by Tony Evans, but I was left a little wanting at the end. The prayers in this book are based on the ACTS prayer acronym, and each prayer focuses on an attribute of God. Tony Evans starts each prayer with a Bible verse that goes along with God's attribute that prayer is focused on. These prayers could help a new or growing Christian who doesn't know much about prayer yet. They give a great guide, and the attributes are great for getting to know God more and growing a relationship with Him. I like the concept of this book, especially for the new or growing Christion. For me, I would prefer not to have to read my prayers from a book.
I began reading Prayers for Knowing God last night. What a wonderful prayer resource, reminding me to take up a former habit of praying that I used for many years. Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving & Supplication. At a time when I find myself so often in prayer, I am thankful for this book by Tony Evans. I will also be sure to keep Tony in my prayers as he and his materials are such a great source and blessing for every Christian.
This would be a fantastic book for any Christian to give to another, to give to someone who is questioning Christianity and needs some guidance or has some questions, or just someone struggling. I myself am still dealing with the lingering effects of having had Covid and this book felt like a great place to start my own prayers.
