Enjoyable story, with a thrilling plot. Really great, and enjoy all books by this author. Will definitely read more!
Set in Alber, Utah, a fictional town where a polygamous sect has developed a community, this community has become one of the characters in the series. HER FINAL PRAYER is book #2 in the series, but works as a stand alone too. We renew our familiarity with the main character and her immediate family and meet many new members of this Mormon community that are practicing polygamists. The main character, Clara Jefferies was once a resident here who fled the controlling religious leaders but has returned as a police detective, an outsider to her family.
Two wives and two children of a resident have been murdered. The husband has been critically injured and a small infant abandoned. But, considered an outsider, Detective Jefferies recieves no help from the locals, even her own family.
The story line is unique as is the treatment of the polygamous community. The conflicts between the community at large and the religous community not only complicate the investigation, they add a few twists and turns that you'd not normally see. The story was good, the characters relatable....even the slimy ones....and the mystery complicated enough to keep me guessing until the end. Kathryn Casey has definitely made Detective Clara Jefferies a character to watch.
This is the 2nd book in the series and it's a winner. I found the book hard to put down, so I read it straight through. The book is extremely well written and I really enjoy the characters. I'm glad I discovered this series.
Her Final Prayer by Kathryn Casey is the second book in the Detective Clara Jefferies series and I loved it .This second book was brilliant from start to finish I was hooked within the first few pages and that were I stayed - Its was fast paced and full of twists and turns throughout.
I highly recommend this book and so looking forward to her next installment in the Detective Clara Jefferies.
Big thank-you to netgalley the Bookouture and author for the advanced digital copy of this book in exchange for my fair and honest opinions.
Clara Jeffries stayed in Alber, Utah, after solving the case of several missing local girls. Her next case is shocking. Two women and two young children are murdered, and a man is in critical condition. Clara must work to find who is responsible for such a gruesome crime, but nothing is going as planned. Witnesses are withholding key pieces of information. Persons of interest are disappearing. The townspeople are holding protests. And why is one of Clara's mothers always showing up in places she shouldn't be?
Her Final Prayer is Kathryn Casey's sequel to The Fallen Girls, and it also keeps you on the edge of your seat. One of my favorite books that I have read in 2021, and I can't wait to dive into the next installment!
Another riveting read in this series. The first book set the scene, and the second exceeded expectations. It was a gripping procedural leaving the reader with no clues to deduce who is the culprit!
This book is number 2 in the series. Having read number one already, I really feel like Im getting to know the characters. I found this book hard to put down. They are very well paced and I cant wait to read #3.
This is book two in the Clara Jefferies series and it was just as good as the first. I'm really enjoying finding this new author. I wasn't sure what to think about a storyline taking place with a polygamy sect, but I have enjoyed them so I was wrongly judging the story before starting to read it. There were plenty of twists and turns and the tension between Clara and digging into the community when she has been ostracized is intriguing and adds a lot to the story. I really enjoyed this book, and I can't wait to read the next one.
Her Final Prayer is an exceptionally well-written novel. The author grabs you in the opening paragraph and keeps you turning page after page, following the latest Clara Jeffries mystery.
While fighting the secretive polygamous community, outcast Detective Clara Jeffries struggles to solve the murder of an entire family. This religious sect's practices discourage contact with outsiders and shun entirely anyone who has left the fold. Clara and Sheriff Max both fall into this category, making their investigation doubly difficult.
The book is well-written, with scenes so vivid they play like a movie in your mind. Kathryn Casey is a master at slipping in a clue here and another there, leading you down the path to a stunning conclusion.
I almost passed up book one because it didn’t seem like my typical type of story. Thank goodness I decided to read The Fallen Girls because I have enjoyed the characters, plot, and writing style immensely. This excellent sequel left me immediately reaching for book three.
This was a quick read, full of twists and turns, full of suspense and surprises. Well developed characters and very easy to read and follow. This was one that I lost sleep because I wanted to find out whodunnit. I can’t wait for the next one in this series.
Another great read in this series, it had me gripped from the first page. The story is easy to follow and has great characters.
Looking forward to reading more in this series.
I absolutely love this series! Born into a polygamous family in a small Utah town, Clara Jeffries is such a unique heroine. After the events of the first book, Clara has taken a job with the police department, something that not all of the locals are pleased about. When one of her mothers finds a murdered family, Clara is called to the scene and discovers one family member clinging to life in the kitchen an a young infant safe in an upstairs bedroom. Without cooperation from the locals or even her own family, finding answers to what happened is complicated. The mystery is suspenseful and complex and I can't wait for the chance to spend more time in Clara's world.
I loved this book!
Casey has built a vivid world of characters in a very unique setting! The main character can only be described as a native outsider and is instantly endearing; you want so much for the complications in her life to work themselves out. Her unusual perspective makes me highly recommend this series to fans of Linda Castillo.
As for this plot line, I thought this was a great follow up to the first book— enough of the same character dynamics but a totally different case.
Crime novels & police procedurals are a dime a dozen these days, but this one is refreshingly unique!
Detective Clara Jeffries is called to a scene where a killing has occured.
A mother and her children are dead . The father is barely alive but the two year old is left unarmed.
They go upstairs and find his other wife dead as well
This is a Mormon community and they don't give much away.
Thanks NetGalley
I really enjoyed this book- it was a fast-paced and twisty mystery. It's the 2nd book in a series but can be read as a standalone (though I imagine you'd get more background about Clara's journey in book one, which I had not read). The story centers on Clara, who returns from Texas to her hometown in Utah to take on the Chief of Police role. The town is extremely religious and polygamous and is not welcoming to Clara, as she fled rather than marrying the man that she was set up to marry. The crime that Clara has to solve is around 2 wives and 2 children of a local man who were brutally murdered.
I'll get it out there immediately and say that I thought I would be distracted by, or at least unhappy with, the unfamiliar religious backdrop, but I wasn't at all. The book didn't preach and described religion only in the context of explanation, or understanding Clara's thoughts. If you are worried about that as well, you'll be pleasantly surprised.
The author did a great job in dropping bread crumbs to help the reader figure out who the villain was, and also threw in many believable red herrings. I went back and forth many times as to who I thought had committed the murders. When all was said and done, the loose ends were tied up nicely and I wasn't left with any lingering questions.
Clara herself is a likeable character, though certainly has some demons. She felt very real to me.
Overall, I'd recommend this book to those who like mysteries and thrillers- I read this book in a day because I couldn't wait to find out what happened. Thanks to Netgalley for providing me a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
A very well written thriller. Great plot that will keep you on the edge of your seat, many twists and turns. I highly recommend this book. I received an advance ebook from the publisher and Netgalley. This is my unbiased review.
"Life held such contradictions. People died, and the next morning others woke and started a new day...We still ached for revenge."
This is the second in a series featuring Detective Clara Jefferies, police chief in Alber, Utah, returned recently to her hometown from Dallas, Texas after 10 years. Clara grew up in Alber as a child belonging to a fundamentalist Mormon town that adhered to the principle of plural marriage. She was married off to an old man age at 17 and fled her home and is now shunned by Elijah's People because she disavowed all of their teachings. Including her own mothers and family. Now she's back there and still not accepted even as she tries to do her job for all of them.
In this case, a family massacre. Two mothers and two children murdered on their property and their husband, Jacob Johansson, lying on the kitchen floor near death with his throat slit. Upstairs a newborn baby remains the only one in the family unmolested. Who has committed this heinous crime and why. Clara and her former teenage boyfriend, Chief Deputy Max Anderson, examine the evidence, interrogate witnesses, and track down suspects to find the killer. NO SPOILERS.
I enjoyed this especially because of the setting and the interesting glimpse into an unusual religious society in modern day. I like the main character even though she's as messed up emotionally from her past as any female in this genre. I was hoping that the ending wouldn't be what it was because I had guessed it right away, so that was a bit of a disappointment. Hopefully the next book will put Clara in a better place with her personal relationships and I look forward to reading it.
Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture for this e-book ARC to read and review.
I really enjoyed this book all the way through. It had a really good plot, great main characters and really keeps you hooked on the plot. I would highly recommend this book.
Her Final Prayer by Kathryn Casey is a fast paced and gripping thriller that kept me on my toes throughout. As someone who was very impressed with the first book in the series, I loved this second outing featuring Detective Clara Jefferies, who has now been promoted to Chief of Police.
Still struggling to come to terms with her past, Clara is called to a ranch just outside Alber, Utah, the place where she grew up. Two young children and their mothers have been murdered, their father left for dead. Only two month old Jeremy has been left untouched in his crib.
Now Clara must find out who carried out this monstrous attack, but with her own family shutting her out of the investigation she is facing an almost impossible task. With the killer still at large, will Clara be able to face up to the demons of her past and catch the killer before it’s too late?
Although Her Final Prayer can be read as a standalone, I would recommend reading the previous book in the series first, which in my opinion would make for a far richer reading experience.
Kathryn Casey’s writing is top notch as she weaves a thrilling tale with plenty of twists and turns along the way. Clara is a fabulous character who I grow to like more and more as her story continues. Growing up in a polygamous community has left its mark on her and she continues to struggle with the effects of her upbringing and the rift between herself and her own family. After spending so much time building a wall around her own emotional wellbeing, is Clara finally ready to let go of the past?
Fast paced and gripping, Her Final Prayer is a wonderful mixture of crime thriller and family drama, with an intricately woven plot that kept me guessing throughout. A brilliant read that I would recommend, I can’t wait to see where Kathryn Casey is going to take Detective Clara Jefferies next!
A killer had struck a family killing the kids and mothers with father barely alive. Only a 2 year old was left untouched. Detective Clara Jefferies was called to the horrifying scene. With the close knit Mormon community, Clara had a real struggle to find her answers.
Book 2 of the series, though I didn’t remember anything of book 1 so it felt like a new murder mystery. With a begging like that, there was an urgency in the entire book to find the killer. I loved that the author had interspersed the prose with clues which didn’t go well with each other. Carla really had to work hard to find her leads.
Her determination was the beacon that led the investigation when she was face to face with stubbornness and people unwilling to cooperate. She had a real trying time. But got to get killer, she did, even with the many twists and turns.
Quite a fun investigative tale where secrets were mixed with lies and it was all up to Clara to untangle them.
