Very quickly I found myself engrossed in this book and couldn't put it down. It's exactly the book you reach for when you want to put yourself in the festive mood. I loved the characters of Meg and Tom. It's a classic Grinch tale put I loved how Ashcroft made it feel so fresh!
Romance and Christmas are the two very things that make the best kind of book. And this had both, if you’re looking for a cute book to settle down with to get into the Christmassy mood then this is it. It’s totally swoon worthy and I will definitely be rereading this again soon!
Another beautifully written Donna Ashcroft book. I loved the tradition of the Christmas promises on the Christmas tree growing out of the wishing well.
Meg loves everything about Christmas and the picture of her wearing her elf outfits and her face brushed with glitter is only part of the feel good Christmas spirit in this book. Tom arrived in Lockton having lost his Christmas spirit and wanting to get away from everything that reminds him of the festive period.
A great read for those who love Christmas, family, friendship and a sprinkling of romance. Throw in a herd of reindeers and You have the perfect read to curl up with
Do you need to get the Grinch out of your life or know someone who is a Grinch buy them this book!!
Meg has Christmas running in her veins and she will infuse you with Christmas Spirit if it’s the last thing she ever does. She wants a man who will take her for who she is and that is a goofy woman who loves Christmas and owns a Christmas Store that is opened year round!
Tom is a new guy who is hot and looks like he has been hurt and has a cranky attitude. Meg thinks maybe they could pair up if he would get out of his doldrums and lighten up about the Christmas Season!
The author does a superb job in describing the picturesque landscape of the valley. I can only imagine the beauty of Scotland. She does a great job in keeping the flow of the characters, but at times there was a point where the story lagged and you wanted it to happen and get to the end or develop into something more interesting.
I have read her books before and this is not my favorite, but it’s still a good lighthearted read for Christmas!
I received an advanced copy from NetGalley and these are my willingly given thoughts and opinions.
How I love this author!! Every book I’ve read by her has been a lovely, feel-good read! This book, obviously, is set in the run up to Christmas in the little Scottish village of Lockton. We have been in this village before in The Little Village of New Starts, where we meet Evie and Callum. This new book focusses on Meg Scott who runs the year-round Christmas shop which is in the village. I love Meg’s character, and it brought a smile to my face every time Meg appeared in her Elf costume!! Despite being the epitome of everything that is Christmas, all Meg wants for Christmas is a quiet time with no family around. Unfortunately, her family have other ideas when they descend into the Scottish village and into Meg’s little flat about the shop!
Another visitor to the village is Tom Riley-Clark. Tom hates Christmas because of the memories associated with it, and when Meg finds out she can’t help but become attracted to him despite the thought of tinsel, glitter and elf costumes sending shivers down his spine. I really like Tom’s character though, and even though his middle name should be Scrooge, the fact that he is devilishly handsome makes up for it! There are reasons why Tom is the way he is though, and these are revealed as the story moves on!
This book was a truly delightful, festive read! If you don’t feel in the Christmas spirit by the time you finished this book, then all I can say is Bah Humbug…!! Meg and Tom’s storyline is complimented well by the other characters in the village, some of whom we have already met in the previous book. I loved how the storyline wasn’t overly complicated and there weren’t too many extra characters to get confused with, leaving much more time for the loveliness of family, friendships and Christmas!
Of course, it wouldn’t be a Christmas book without a sprinkling of romance, and whilst you know these books always have a happy ending, I wasn’t prepared for just how many people got one!! I loved the arrival of a special group of visitors just as Christmas Day dawned, and this honestly left me wishing I’d been there to witness such a magical sight! This was such a joyful, sparkling and heart-warming read! Filled with family secrets, Christmas promises and more tinsel than you can shake a bauble at, this book is definitely the ideal companion to a cosy chair, a warm blanket and a mulled wine on a cold winter’s day!! I loved the storyline, the characters and the location, it had everything you could want for in a festive romance!! Fab, fab, fab!!
Meg runs a gorgeous little Christmas shop in Lockton, Scotland. She has decided this year that she will not torment herself by spending Christmas with her family who all pretend to get on for one day a year and she will enjoy her Christmas at home.
Tom is staying in Lockton to do a favour for his friend, working in the local pub over the festive period. He is most definitely not a Christmas fan due to some problems in his past that he continues to run from.
When Meg’s family turn up, uninvited, on her doorstep it seems she might not be able to have her intended Christmas after all. Despite himself, Tom is enjoying the company of Meg who is constantly covered in glitter and various Christmas ensembles.
The close-knit community and festive spirit of the village make this a warm-hearted Christmas romance. To be enjoyed whilst wrapped up on a chilly day.
Thank you to NetGalley for providing an eARC in exchange for an honest review.
This is my second read from Donna Ashcroft, and once again, it is cozy and warm- perfect for the holidays! I find that she balances drama with coziness well. I was invested in this book, but didn't feel any secondhand stress reading it- key for holiday reading. (If you give me secondhand stress or embarrassment, I will just want to hide...) And I adore the town of Lockton, with their holiday spirit and wonderful tradition of The Promise Tree, which I might steal for myself. Can't recommend this enough!
I did enjoy this book even if parts were predictable and i do think there was alot of Characters in the pub which was confusing at times figuring out who was who.
Since I am wishing that this year ends as fast as possible I am so looking forward to the holiday season hoping for a better year. And what way should everyone do this? By loosing yourself in the Christmas books!
This was such a great book to start feeling better. It has everything you need to get cozy with a blanket, fire place, hot cocoa - or whiskey maybe? :D
Whiskey - since this book is set in a small village in Scotland Highlands. Descriptions of the nature and the harsh beauty of the winter there are so, so appealing and immersing myself there was so easy.
I could easily connect with all the characters and I loved the whole setting of the village and easiness of those who inhabit it.
This story has it all - Meg, that loves Christmas, and has a shop dedicated to it, Tom that hates it due to some personal traumas, estranged parents, characters that are honest to the bone and will tell you what they think straightaway and some sweet animals. Maybe you will choose not to believe me, but the reindeer are such a huge part of this story! The loveliest addition to a story I have seen in a while!
In the era where there are so many books and authors writing similar themes this book stuck out since it has one charming aspect - a tradition of a Promise Tree that sweeps you away with its loveliness. :)
The story also grips you with some difficult topics that wakes you up and makes you think about all the good stuff in your life. But they are interchanging with the love story in a simple way which I found great and result in the overall solution for the love story.
Downright adorable and a perfect way to start you festive readings!
I last read a Donna Ashcroft book earlier this year and I forgot how good they were. This edition is full of heartwarming festive tales from the Scottish village of Lockton. This novel focuses on Meg who eats, breathes and sleeps Christmas and runs a Christmas ship in the village. This year she has decided to spend Christmas alone in Lockton but it appears her family have other ideas. They arrive spreading discord but Meg is determined they won’t ruin her Christmas cheer. Tom Riley-Clark has also arrived in the village to help out at his friend’s pub. He’s tall, brooding and certainly catches Meg’s eye, but he hates Christmas. Can they share a kiss under the mistletoe or are they doomed from the start?
I loved this book and it was great to have some different main characters to focus on but also to have some of the old favourites there too. A lovely feel good festive read that is a joy to behold. I would rate this 4.5 stars. Thank you to NetGalley, Bookouture and the author for the chance to review.
I am a sucker for a sweet holiday love story! This one did not disappoint. Even thought it’s only September, I found myself wanting to put my tree up and read more Christmas books!
Reading a festive book in September? Well, why not? ;) Some people would not do it so early in the year, but I don't mind. In fact I even prefer it like this in order to avoid an overdose in December.
I know I must sound like a fanatic, but I am not. I like to read about Christmas, but call me Mrs Grinch. I am always relieved when the 26th arrives. If I could hide from the 23rd until the 26th I would in a heart beat. Tom could easily be my brother. LOL
Even though I am not a fan myself (as you understood by now, I am sure ;) ), I respect that people are on cloud nine when Christmas arrives and I do see what they like about it. It's just not my cup of tea.
Nevertheless, I really enjoyed this book. Opposites do attract and it would be rather dull if you always like the same things as your partner. Love and relationships are about give and take and seeing things through your loved one's eyes.
It was nice being in Scotland again and meeting some old 'friends'. In a previous book ( The Little Village of New Starts) the author told us Evie and Callums story. Now it's her friend Meg's turn. Why not treat yourself to both books if you have missed out on the first one?
It's freezing in Lockton, but you won't need a coat. The story will warm you through and through. 5 stars.
Thank you, Donna Ashcroft and Bookouture
I found it very hard to get in to the characters or storyline as everything seemed one dimensional- wouldn’t put it on the the top of my TBR pile

This is a Story set around Christmas, a story of love and of losses, a story of charity.
Characters: Meg – single, seemingly unlucky in love, adores Christmas to such an extent, that she runs a year round Christmas shop, devoted to all things Christmassy.
Tom – the eponymous tall, dark, handsome ( I may be fabricating a little – I don’t think we are ever told he is tall, dark or handsome) I just felt, as a reader, that he was!) stranger with a mysterious past, who seems to hate Christmas.
A match made in heaven? Definitely a story about love and families, about miscommunication. A story of mismatches. However, a wonderful read, full of the joys of the festive season, which was hard to put down.
A Christmas shop in a small village is a perfect setting for a romance for Meg and the reluctant Tom. Add some parental discord, reindeer on the loose, some nasty weather in the Scottish Highlands, and a great cast of characters make for a perfect Christmas read.
Meg and Tom's story. I did enjoy this one, and it is a good second in the series after Evie's story. The only thing that got a little tiresome was the lack of trust issues and I felt they really didn't build on their relationship before things exploded. Minor overall though, leading to the HEA, but stood out for me. Could be my age, as the angst of youth (20s) was a few decades ago. Would recommend though, as I enjoy this author and settings and characters overall.
The story of Meg and Tom, opposites attract.
Meg loves christmas so much that she runs a christmas shop year round. Tom hates Christmas after events that happened at christmas a few years ago. They atart to grow closer and realise that their differences don't matter all that much, but will the secret Tom is keeping change everything?
A great christmas read.
This book is everything I had hoped for. Meg owns a Christmas shop. She loves Christmas and wants to have that feeling year round. Tom comes to town to help a friend with his pub for awhile and the two have sparks aside from one problem...he hates Christmas.
This is the second book in this series from Ashcroft. I loved returning to the town of Lockton, Scotland. The characters are fun and I love the small-town feel of it. This book brought all the warm, cozy Christmas feelings for that quintessential holiday read. I would recommend this to anyone looking for a quick, uplifting Christmas book.
My first read by this author and what a gem of a book!! With all the doom and gloom in the world, this is a chance to escape to a world of romance and traditional Christmas spirit. I loved every page of this brilliantly written book and my thanks go to the author, Bookouture and Netgalley for giving me the opportunity to read this wonderful story.
Meg is a gal after my own heart, I too love Christmas like she does! I love the idea that she puts glitter all over her face....hmmmm, maybe I can do that too!! lol This was such a delightful Christmas story that involves Meg, who owns a Christmas shop year round and Tom, who is in town to help out a friend and is NOT a fan of Christmas. Two people who couldn't be more different but yet the attraction is there and hard to ignore. Tom also has a secret about his past and who he really is so that really adds to the story as well!
I love these small town Christmas stories and all the traditions that they have. This story is so well written and I could just picture it all in my mind. Hearts that are hurting will be healed and the spirit of Christmas will wound its way throughout.
I received an ARC of this book via NetGalley and am voluntarily leaving an honest review.
