Christopher G. Nuttall http://chrishanger.net is the author of more than 50 novels. Debt of War was published in 2020, and it is the third book in his Embers of War series. It is the 49th book I completed reading in 2023.
Opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own! Due to scenes of violence and mature language, I categorize this novel as R. This novel has several significant characters. The most prominent are, Admiral Kat Falcone, her brother Duke Peter Falcone, Admiral Sir William McElney, and Captain Sarah Henderson.
This book continues the story arc begun in Debt of Honor and expanded in Debt of Loyalty. Kat and Sarah are part of the forces that have followed the King to Caledonia. Peter and William are fighting against these renegades. The House of Lords on Tyre wants the King caught and brought to justice.
Kat has led the King’s fleet to victory in two minor skirmishes. She rightly fears that Tyre will soon be able to bring its full military force against them. She has little doubt of the outcome but fights on. Many Colonials who had backed the King are beginning to look for a way out.
Kat meets with her former crewmate William in a secret meeting. There, he reveals evidence that the King has secrets. Secrets that devastate Kat and make her question her choice to follow the King. What is she going to do, and how does she protect those who have been loyal to her.
I enjoyed the 10.5 hours I spent reading this 453-page science fiction. The plot of this novel has action, politics, and intrigue. I have had the opportunity to read and enjoy several of Mr. Nuttall’s novels. Those were The Oncoming Storm, Falcone Strikes, Cursed Command, The Hyperspace Trap, Debt of Honor, and Debt of Loyalty. I like the chosen cover art. I give this novel a rating of 4.5 (rounded to 5) out of 5.

The third in a series that just keep getting better. This book concentrates more on characters as opposed to military strategy and as usual, dirty politics and betrayal are at the heart of the matter. These books will hold your interest, involve you in the lives of the characters and portray the state of modern day politics all to vividly. Just wish The author had been a little kinder to some of his characters. Definitely will continue to read his books.
Due to a problem with send to kindle I was unable to read the title. I realized this problem only now, but it seems there was no sychronization for the past two months.
Kat and William work to end this war. The surprising information from the end of the last book leads to the two working together again. Plenty of danger and tension with a satisfying ending. I do wonder if we have seen the last of these two as they take off on a five year assignment.
This is the final book of Nuttall's series and it does not disappoint. The plot is well developed and I enjoyed seeing how the characters interacted. It was a well written book and series.
This is a fantastic conclusion to a very unique and intriguing series. The flow of the writing is very good even if sometimes I want more of one of the viewpoints at a given time. The writing keeps the reader very entertained and engaged. This is very good young adult, but still a little advanced for children. I thoroughly enjoyed the series and this book. It has twists and turns that the foundation was laid in the previous books, but if you weren't looking for them, they upend the plot.
