All Cori wants is s a fling!
The rule for breakups is to get over the guy you dated but what happens when you reconnect with an ex-boyfriend you never really got over?
Cori Ross just wanted to get over her ex-boyfriend by spending the night at a Breakup Bash when she runs into Grey Latham, the ex-boyfriend who was in town visiting. Cori decided to have a fling with Grey but soon realized that they had strong feelings for each other, but they never dealt with any of the real reasons they broke up before starting back up.
The Last Rule of Makeups is the third book in the Breakup Bash series but it can be read as a standalone.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Second chance romances can either be really good, or really bad. Fortunately, this was a good one. For them to work for me, there needs to be a good reason why the couple split up in the first place and a good reason why they might try again. For the couple in The Last Rule of Makeups, Grey and Cori, they split up mostly because he was moving on to a new job and she had a sick father that she was unwilling to leave behind. They probably could have made things work if she had talked to him about it, but perhaps more than anything they weren't ready to be together forever yet.
Cori and Grey make a good couple and it's clear from the moment that they meet again that there's still a huge amount of chemistry between them. Where second chance romances do work really well, is that because they have been a couple before, they already know so much about one another and when things move along quickly, it's a bit more believable than the instant love that happens in so many romance stories.
I think that this is the third book in a series. I haven't read the other two, although based on this one, I'd quite like to. This works fine as a standalone read though.
I received a complimentary copy of this book through NetGalley. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
This is a steamy and fun read. Cori and her two friends are trying to get over their bad breakups. Grey, her college ex pops back in her life just at the right time. They rekindle their relationship and the sparks fly. It is an absolutely gorgeous story about two people who get an opportunity to find themselves. They get an opportunity to mend fences with their families. Nina Crespo does a wonderful job of bringing up important issues like drug overdose and seeking help while still writing a fun hot story.
To be honest, it wasn't as good as I had hoped it would be. I enjoyed the story and characters are great, but some scenes were just plain boring. The kind you see in every other contemporary romance novel. Hence the low rating. But I think this book will be perfect for those who like contemporary romance exactly for that reason.
Two people who weren't able to make a relationship work despite of being in love, now have another chance at it. Will they make it work this time or are they just not meant to be together?
I absolutely loved this story. 2nd chance romances are one of my favorite troupes because you almost start in the middle of the story. Nina does a great job of developing this story as a stand-alone - but if you read stories 1 and 2 this is an amazing closure to the series. She also has exceptional talent at writing about ethnic men - very sexy ethnic men. Cory and Grey need to work a bit for their happy ending and once they get there it is so sweet for both of them. We also get to experience the power of parents and the impact different parenting styles have on our children. I loved this story and wish I had more stars to give!
"How do you feel about us continuing to see each other?" She just needed to make one thing clear to him. "I'd like that. As long as we keep it casual. I just came out of a relationship, so I'm not looking for anything long-term right now."
Nat meant those words. Her last relationship took a toll on her feelings and self esteem. Running into Grey Latham was definitely unexpected. She hasn't seen him in 6 years, yet it seems like time has stood still. Nat and Grey have an undeniable chemistry, physically and emotionally. Spending time together is just easy, again.
But the old things that kept them apart before are back again. Grey's life is in another state. The question is are they willing to make compromises and sacrifices to be together this time?
I loved Nina Crespo's Break Up series. The friendships have been great and the happily ever afters are on point!
This third installment of the Breakup Bash series was as enjoyable as Breakup Bash Book 2 but it definitely went in a direction that I didn't expect. Since all three books are considered stand alone stories it's not necessary to read the previous ones but I do enjoy learning all the back stories involved with the characters. All three of the women in these books are strong and independent, which I enjoy, but I felt that Cori initially came across as kind of needy in the beginning of this book.
I learned a lot about the business of being a DJ from this story, which was a really interesting topic and one that I really had never thought about before. Grey (Cori's old college boyfriend), who is back in town for a temporary bit of time, happens to run into Cori at Club Escapade where she's attending the Breakup Bash, a party where women get together to celebrate their breakups and get back into the fun of being single again. After a bit of dancing Cori hurts her foot and they head up to the VIP section where Grey's friend, who's DJ'ing at the club, has reserved a table for his friends. They end up taking off instead and it's like they never had been apart.
I loved the heat between Cori and Grey, as well as learning a bit about the DJ scene. I'm not really into the whole club and dance scene but it's fun to live vicariously through a good book! The overall story was entertaining as well as informative and I enjoyed this book so much that I can see myself checking out book #1.
I received a free ARC of this book in exchange for my honest opinion.
Such a cute rekindled love story!
Cori and her live-in boyfriend have broken up. Leaving Cori heartbroken. She and her friends go to a breakup party. This is where she runs into her long-time ex-boyfriend Grey. She and Grey dated when she was in college and only broke up because he was moving to Austin, and she had to stay and take care of her father. Grey is the one person who knew Cori the most. They were friends and lovers. Making their connection that much stronger.
After all of these years, they decide to try to do a casual fling with one another. Will this casual fling bring back feelings that never truly went away.?
I absolutely loved this book! Can't wait to read more from this author!!
I am a fan of the Breakup Bash series by Nina and so glad that I got to read Cori’s story. All the books in the series can be read as standalone because they all go back to the night of the breakup bash that Cori and her friends attend. Cori attends the breakup bash because her boyfriend of 2 years dumps her and she just wants to move on. That night at the party to runs into her ex boyfriend Grey who was the one that got away. She broke his heart when she didn’t move away with him but Grey never forgot her. Their one night catching up turns into something they never expected it to become. From the night on they are inseparable and start on a journey of discovering what they lost. Cori is trying to help Grey find his passion again by hoping he will stay. Grey sees this as their second chance but there are things Cori is keeping from him. When Grey finds out the real reason Cori didn’t move away with him all those years ago he feels hurt and it brings on so much hurt for him. Will Cori and Grey find a way to get through their past to have a future? They must find a way through the obstacles they think stand in their way if they are willing to fight. I love this story because it was a quick read and their chemistry leapt off the pages. Cori is funny and Grey brought out a side of her I found endearing. Grey is sexy, sweet and loving right from the beginning. These two will have you wanted more from them so go out and pick up this book.
The Last Rule of Makeups by Nina Crespo a pleasing four-star read. This is number three in the Breakup Bash series, but they can be read as a stand-alone as I haven’t read all of the previous stories only one and I don’t feel like I missed anything. Cori Ross was such a complex woman, she has been burned before and let down by her ex, can another ex-relight the fire in her? Can she do the same for him? As he just isn’t the same man who left her behind. Can they help each other and find who the need to be? I enjoyed this one, I didn’t enjoy it as much as the previous one, but it was still fun and flirty, but I just found it to be a little too flirty, it could have done with more storyline and less action. I am sure lots and lots of people will love this story, and I really did enjoy it, it just didn’t hit the spot I expected it to.
Second chance romance gets a great, steamy story in this latest book from Nina Crespo. Cori and Grey are fantastic characters that the reader can’t help rooting for.
Cori and her besties are attending a party promoted as the “Breakup Bash.” Cori is still recovering from her breakup with her long term boyfriend. While he wasn’t the most exciting guy in the world, Cori thought everything was ok until he broke up with her. While at the club, she comes across her college boyfriend Grey. Grey is a DJ who moved to Austin after graduation. He’d asked Cori to come with him, but she said no because of concerns about her father’s health.
When they reconnect, sparks immediately fly. While they agree to keep things casual, it’s clear to everyone around them that their connection is just as strong as it was 6 years ago. The steamy story takes off from there.
I really liked the way this story took two characters and put them in relatable situations. While there was no huge trauma that led to their original breakup, it made sense that they’d be pulled in different directions before finding their way back to each other. Their struggles to mesh their existing lives also seemed realistic. Combine all that with explosive chemistry and a set of fabulous friends, and you have a great romantic escape.

so I am assuming this is the last book to this group of girls. We had four women who had some bad situations, t bad relationship but were able to overcome them because they were never alone, they had each other to cry with, have fun with and generally just be the friend when you need them. We have Cori who has had a boyfriend for two years but noticed that there relationship was blah and she needed to spice it up, unfortunately or in my thought fortunately her boyfriend dumps her and she goes to the break-up bash with her besties to celebrate the getting rid of useless men. She ends up bumping into Grey, her ex boyfriend before this dud, and they quickly realized that attraction was still there, so they lie to themselves thinking they can just have a fling til he leaves again, but you and I know that is not the case. They end up having the same issue of what broke them up the first time, it wasn't their love for each other, but the circumstance. What to do? well I would have ran with Grey!Enjoy!
4.5 stars - What a wonderfully sexy AA contemporary romance. As an AA woman, I thought this read felt genuine and honest, and not bogged down with a lot of colloquialisms to try and prove itself. I really enjoyed it.

This the third book in a series but you can read each book as a standalone.
This is the first time I read a work of this author, and I'm very pleased with my experience. It's fairly short but it doesn't feel rushed, and it certainly reads like a 300-page novel would. It's rare that a book centered on a couple who parted amicably in the past and gets another chance to work on their relationship, I must say, that's very refreshing and it's one of the things that drew me in to reading this book.
With a story like this, it's important to establish a sense of maturity in the characters, because getting back with your ex requires an open perspective and the ability to assert oneself. I love Grey more than Cori, though there's really nothing wrong with her character, it's just that Grey felt more relatable. Plus, Grey is such gentleman, and he's not only attuned with his emotions but appear to be in control of it.
Though the mindset of both characters tend to show maturity and growth, it wasn't boring, it wasn't dramatic, instead it's light. I liked it that way, because the author didn't try too hard to show the audience that Cori and Grey are compatible in different aspects.
The reason why I rated this 4 stars is because the rough patch they went through towards the latter part wasn't enough for me, given that Cori's career dreams weren't clearly established. If I had known what she wanted to do, then I would've probably understood why it was difficult for her to decide on the matter of moving states.
Also, I wasn't a fan of how they made up in the end, because as mature adults (not to mention, with an open communication that they had) I expected them to discuss about the matter on hand rather than jumping into action. But that's a minor thing, eventually it's something I'll get over with, it was just different from how I expected it to go given the characters' personalities and relationship.
Overall, I highly recommend this especially if you're looking for a fast read. I don't know yet if I'm going to read the other books in the series, but we'll see. I'll have an in-depth review in my blog, so if you're interested in that, go visit my blog: www.readingflamingo.wordpress.com.
Not going to lie: the cover got me. The blurb got my curiosity, and a few hours later the book was finished! Now in some respect, this is a traditional romance: boy dumps girl, girl swears of men. How does this differ? Start with the Break-Up Bash and move to a 2nd chance with Gray. The characters were well written and relatable. The story moved quickly, because the characters knew one another and because the author did not dwell on the backstory but did fill us in on their history. This is book three in the series and I plan to go read the first two, as we get glimpses of the other 2 girls. However, this story does stand alone.
Thank you to NetGalley and Entangled Publishing for the advanced copy for me to review.
Good book! This book had a good story line, it was cute, funny ,hot , and was a good book, not my all time favorite but still worth reading! Thank you NetGalley and the publishers for sharing this book with me!
TL;DR:
- 3.75 stars
- Extremely quick read - doesn't take place over more than 4 weeks (I think?). A bit of insta-love but they were exes, so not out of left field. Cute. Worth picking up if you're into leads who are comfortable with each other and some serious STEAM.
Loved:
- Really enjoyed the familiarity between Cori and Grey. It helped skipped what's usually the beginning/awkward bit where you're just waiting for the couple to meet and sometimes it's executed well and sometimes it's like. Bad.
- Having grown up in the era of paperback romances that are pretty white (Harlequin did sometimes have Black stories or "Asian" stories, I'll give them that) I just really love reading POC love stories. As a WOC, I always will, probably.
- Both have really interesting interests and careers! No billionaires! (Grey's family is wealthy, but he passion lies in music, and he chooses to pursue that without their monetary help).
Less into:
- SOOO quick! I liked these two, would have been totally down with a little bit of a longer timeline for the two of them.
- Because Cori and Grey were exes, there was a lot that they knew about each other, but it didn't always get fully revealed to the reader. I would have loved more details about their time together when they were younger, or old stories that showed their familiarity with one another. They were definitely cute and HOT together, but I would have killed for an anecdote about places they used to frequent or names they used to call each other, or something. They each felt a bit flat because we didn't know that much about them.
Overall cute. Quick. Sweet. Two people loving and accepting each other for who they are and who they're not.
