Lillah is a woman who would prefer to write and be published than to be married. Fraser is looking to expand his whiskey business. I was surprised at how fast sparks flew in this story. It almost felt like I had started the book a few chapters in. For an independent woman, Lillah was surprisingly easy to manage by the publisher who wanted to use her words to incite his readers. I am curious to read the next in this series. I received an ARC from NetGalley and Dragonblade Publishing for my honest review.
Thank you netgalley for providing this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Unfortunately I was disappointed in this historical romance. The Duke was distastefully blantant in his sexual pursual of the heroine and the heroine proclaims she wants no man to take her independence but grows aroused when the Duke tells her she should be spanked for her hellion ways. This novel is not true to its time and borders on erotic rather than romance. Just not my cup of tea.
This is book 1 in The Headstrong Harts series. The two main characters are Delilah and Fraser.
I really liked Delilah. She was a very strong heroine. She didn't want to settle for a marriage of convenience. She wanted to marry for love and to have a purpose in life, her writing.
Fraser I also liked. He was a Duke who had no problem with working for a living. He recognized Delilah's independent spirit and nurtured it until it effected him personally.
This was a fun fast paced story. I cant wait for book 2. 5 ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
I want to thank Netgalley for the chance to review this book.
The first book in the Headstrong Harts series, What the Hart Wants follows Delilah Hart, a young woman determined to carve her own path in a male-dominated society. Published in a local paper under a male pseudonym, Lilah critiques the aristocracy, especially the detestable Molineux family, who has a history of corrupt behavior.
When Lilah meets the newest Duke of Molineux, sparks fly. Irresistibly drawn to each other, Fraser and Lilah begin to questions their beliefs, goals, and feelings. Can this couple have a future when secrets, lies, and other obstacles stand in their way?
Messages of empowerment, learning and growing, and fighting for what you believe in are strong in this story, as is the romance! Fraser and Lilah have so much chemistry, and as Fraser teaches Lilah the ways of love, their feelings intensify. Of course, secrets, prejudices, overbearing brothers, and jealous competition get in the way of a potential future, and the pair must decide if their feelings are worth fighting for.
Another aspect of the novel that I really like is the representation of strong, intelligent women who skillfully maneuver through an inequitable society to live their best lives. Delilah writes under a male pseudonym so that her ideas will be published. Though this leads to some heartache, Delilah learns how powerful her voice is. Delilah’s sister and Fraser’s mother also take leadership roles in their families, empowering themselves in a world that offers them less because of their gender.
A sexy enemies-to-lovers historical romance, What the Hart Wants is a great start to the series. I look forward to reading more about the Hart’s in future books. Thanks so much to Netgalley and Drangonblade Publishing for a copy of the book in exchange for my honest review.
Marvellously penned by the author portraying the societal norms of 18th century London ascertaining to status through lineage. Amidst the aristocracy and gender inequality love blossoming between a duke, Fraser MacGregor, and a feisty head, Delilah Hart, who divulges societal practices, increases the reader's anticipation.
A perfect blend of historical fiction paired with romance with the background pertaining to bring into limelight the importance of freedom of women. A must read.
I received an Advance Reader Copy from the publisher, via NetGalley. This in no way impacted on my view.
What the Hart Wants follows Delilah Hart during her first season, though she has no intention of following her rich brother's orders, and marrying someone titled just for the prestige. She is all about equality, feminism, and very much against the horrific and notorious Molineux family. So when she comes across the newest Duke, Fraser MacGregor, and is instantly attracted, she is completely angry. Fraser, for his part, never expected to inherit the title, and the feisty little terrier her meets in his rundown London home takes his breath away. He wants to get close to Lilah, and show her what pleasure just is, while also furthering his family's whiskey making business, and becoming solvent. The letters being penned by the mysterious Mr Smith, though, may just cause problems for the both of them.
As soon as I saw this book advertised on NetGalley, I requested it, because both the cover and synopsis immediately drew me in. I enjoyed the romance between Lilah and Fraser, and especially the moments between the two up in the Highlands at Fraser's family estate. They were both really good characters, with fleshed out back stories, and I'm definitely intrigued by the other Hart siblings we have either met, or remained off page. The other love interests, Jennifer and Thomas, were slimy and written in a way that made it obvious they were in it for the money or title, or both, and there was nothing redeemable about them across the board. All in all, a quick read, and solid foundation for a new series.
