A beautiful reimagining of the traditional story that will inspire children around the world to celebrate and love the holiday season.
What a beautiful interpretation of the 12 Days of Christmas, the classic Christmas carol. Sometimes when we hear a song so often in life it loses it's luster and shine so having a Christmas season must have rewritten in a fresh way with the most beautiful illustrations is such a reward. My children loved this book and we bought the hard copy version to add to our collection. Thank you to Lara Hawthorne and Netgalley for the opportunity to review this title in exchange for my honest opinion.
We all know the 12 days of Christmas story, don’t we? We have all either sung the song or read the poem as children and this one is absolutely perfect for those little ones who are just discovering the beauty of Christmas.
This little picture book is beautifully illustrated, each page has so much going on you can’t help but keep looking, I loved how each illustration connects with each part of the song, if you remember picture books when you were a child they a little boring – well the ones I still have from my childhood are, they are so bland in comparison to this beauty, it really grabs your attention.
Not only are the pictures stunning, but you are also educated as you read – what’s not to love? Plus at the end, there is a search and find type game which will keep not just the little one, but yourself busy, which is a lovely little touch.
This is a magical book which will entertain and be loved by the whole family and perfect to snuggle up with on Christmas Eve.
The lovely illustrations are the star here, with a cheerful folk art vibe and lots of color. There's lots to look for in the artwork, not only the various animal and human gifts, but a little mouse as well, plus the gift recipient's cat and dog show up too. There's a brief explanation of what and when the twelve days of Christmas are at the end of the book. Quite pretty, this will make a great addition to any holiday book collection.

Even though it is just October, I read, or should I say sang, this book with my grandchildren. They knew parts of the song, so it was fun. The book brought the song to life in a fun way. The illustrations are colourful, cute and adorable and there is so much going on, that we spent quite a bit of time on each page. They loved the animals, especially the dogs chasing the birds around. At the end there are some facts about the song as well as a search and find activity that kept my grandkids busy. We read this one a few times over the weekend while they were visiting. I recommend this to families to share over the upcoming holidays. I know I enjoyed revisiting this song

“On the first day of Christmas my true love sent to me: a partridge in a pear tree.”
I defy anyone who grew up with this Christmas carol not to hear the tune and not to want to keep going to the 12th day. This is certainly one of my favourite seasonal songs, made even better with Hawthorne’s gorgeous illustrations! There’s one for every day (well, of course!), and it’s fun to see how many things have been accumulated.
My Goodreads review include the illustration for:
On the first day of Christmas my true love sent to me: a partridge in a pear tree.”
You’ll note that she does already have a few pets in her colourfully crowded house!
My Goodreads review include the illustration for:
On the second day of Christmas my true love sent to me: two turtle doves . . .
The animals do get to wander around outside. Are the newcomers all there on the fourth day?
My Goodreads review include the illustration for:
On the fourth day of Christmas my true love sent to me: four calling birds . . .
I’d now like to call your attention to the delightful departure from classical stereotypes to a slightly more modern take on the maids below.
My Goodreads review include the illustration for:
On the eighth day of Christmas my true love sent to me: eight maids a milking. . .
Again, the ladies below are admittedly all wearing long frocks, but the variety of people and styles of garb (and behaviour!) represent an interesting cross-section of cultures and ages.
My Goodreads review include the illustration for:
On the ninth day of Christmas my true love sent to me: nine ladies dancing . . .
This is just beautiful. There is a description of the history of the carol alongside an illustration of the tree and the girl, dancing with someone I imagine is her true love.
My Goodreads review include the illustration which includes the history of the carol:
. . . and a partridge in a pear tree!
Why do I think this is her true love? If you can see the picture below clearly (it may be too small), just to the right of the middle, sitting on the river bank, are 'our' girl and her dance partner, holding hands, with a bright red love heart between their heads.
My Goodreads review include the illustration of the last page, which asks:
“Can you find everything from the song hidden in this busy scene?”
Yes, and if we look, we can find even more subtle meanings in the illustrations. Absolutely lovely and a great gift for anyone with or without children!
Thanks to NetGalley and Quarto’s Frances Lincoln Children’s Books for the preview copy.
I received an arc of this title from NetGalley for an honest review. The song twelve days of Christmas turned into a picture book.
I'm not christian, but I know this poem and I've heard a lot of its iterations in Christmas books and movies, and I've always loved whenever I see a clever iteration of it. This picture book features the original poem with fantastic and fabulous illustrations and a very brief info at the end about it for those who aren't familiar with it, which I really liked.
I thank Netgalley for the ARC
A beautiful retelling of the classic Christmas rhyme. This edition is illustrated so nicely, which would be engaging to even the smallest reader. A book to buy and have for years, to read every holiday. Very special, and I also love how there are some seek and find activities included.
Nice classic 12 Days of Christmas with a calming Americana feel to it. There is a fun search page at the end for when you have not gotten enough of the beautiful artwork.
A good read for the children! A good bedtime book. My brands loved it. It is a good and lively take on the classic song. This book will get you into the Christmas spirit!
This is a book for the song "12 Days of Christmas" with illustrations. At the end, the author shared tidbits about the song, and a game of finding the items. An interesting book to help kids counting and searching for the items mentioned.
A sweet and simple new edition of the beloved song, 12 Days of Christmas is beautifully illustrated and is sure to make you smile.
Loved this! The illustrations were amazing, and it really helped visualize the poem. I would highly recommend for younger children as well.
I was really charmed by this picture book with those really whimsical and beautiful illustrations that certainly capture the Christmas spirit. I'm sure both kids and adults will enjoy it.
This is a beautifully illustrated edition of the classic Christmas song. It's sure to be loved by those who have grown up loving it, as well as new generations being introduced to it. Many thanks to NetGalley and Frances Lincoln Children's Books for the advance copy.
I received an advance reader copy of this book to read in exchange for an honest review via netgalley and the publishers.
12 days of christmas is a book of rustic illustrations accompanying the classic christmas song the 12 days of christmas. Each illustration is beautifully done with amazing detail. I loved how at the back of the book there was a page with information for children about the meaning of the song.
This is a beautiful addition for any child's book shelf!
12 days of Christmas is a lovely read and has absolutely stunning drawings. It's also a great exercise to read aloud and practice. The kids had a great time running through the verses and searching for all the items and objects in each of the pages!
Words to the Song with Rustic Illustrations
This book is an illustrated version of the Christmas song classic. Each verse is given a two-page spread depicting it, except for the fifth day that has a separate two-page spread just for the golden rings. Until the seventh day, you see all the previous gifts as well as the new one. After that, though, there are too many maids-a-milking, ladies dancing, and lords-a-leaping to keep everything previously mentioned in the song on a two-page spread. The illustrator was careful to show lords, ladies, and maids of different ethnic backgrounds, and the drummers and pipers are also men and women. At the end of the book, the author gives a two-page spread that shows all the gifts, and she has a brief explanation about what the 12 Days of Christmas means (the twelve days between Christmas and the Epiphany) and how the song might have come about. I wasn't wild about the illustrations. They seem like flat, rustic-style folk art to me, which I don't find visually appealing. I did, however, find the fanciful lords with their top hats and canes leaping about the two-page spread highly amusing. If your child enjoys Christmas carols, as I did when I was a child, she or he may like a book that depicts the zaniness of what this Christmas carol would look like with its abundance of odd gifts.
