This is a fantasic, beautifuly written middle grade book that makes you feel warm inside. Similar to the girl who drank the moon it's full of love. Will be getting a copy for my kids.
Thank you to NetGalley for granting this ARC, super good and fast read. The story was intruiging and the characters had an interesting back story.
What a delightful journey! I thoroughly enjoyed this pseudo-fairy tale adventure, which was very reminiscent of Labyrinth and The Dark Crystal in their "epic journey to save the day and discover the truth about yourself" theme.
Tha Last Windwitch was a brilliantly woven story. It had magic, family, and goodness carried through every page turn. The love between Mother Magdi and Brida was apparent in all of their interactions. The revealing of Brida's powers throughout the story came to a heartwarming conclusion at the end. I would highly recommend this book to any reader middle grade age and above.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for giving me a free advanced copy of this book to read and review.
This is a fantastic middle-grades magical adventure story. It is full of rich, wonderful characters and the world feels so real and lived in. I'd love to read more about Brida and her world. This story is about family, love and the power of stories and words
Lovely cover and a good addition to our library collection. Our patrons love these kinds of middle grade books!
This is a really great middle grade read! It’s one of those reads that I want to share with any young reader I know because I think they will all love it!
I didn't finish this story. There is nothing wrong with the story or book as far as I have read. I do feel however that it is a story that has been told before. Nothing new or unique and the genre is saturated with these troupes. I would be interested to see something different for my readers.
The Last Windwitch is an excellent middle grade fantasy novel! This one is a definite recommend for any of my readers who are looking for a well established world of fantasy and adventure. An evil queen? Check! Magic and adventure? Check! Perfect for readers wanting to get lost in a longer fantasy novel. Delightful!
I really do like witch stories, as I've said before. This one is a perfect middle grade introduction to the huge world of high fantasy; the world building here is everything that a reader needs to be in the story without being so much as to become overwhelming. Brida is a lovely protagonist to go on the journey with, as are the supporting characters we meet (particularly fond of Mother Magdi and Burdock the pony, but that's just me).
Excellent for collections looking to include a broad range of fantasy, as well as for anyone who likes witch stories (or simply stories of magic).
If you like middle grade books and fantasy stories, you will love The Last Windwitch. I did not know much about it all before I started reading it and was sucked in right from the beginning. I highly recommend you check this one out!
This beautiful, beautiful book. It completely swept me away. I both wanted to read it as fast as I could so I could find out what would happen to Brida and the stormhorses, but I also wanted to read slowly and savor Jennifer Adam's beautiful writing. The worldbuilding was so well done it felt completely immersive and I would highly recommend this to any young readers who love fantasy that will transport them to another world.
This chosen one story has some twists and turns. The beginning and middle are very compelling. A seemingly below average hedgewitch apprentice seeks to uncover the truth of her parentage, while trying to save the kingdom.
The pacing of the end was a little off. The climax happened very quickly and wrapped up neatly. The character development was great. I really liked the side characters: Bones, Bear and Hush. I liked the small part about teaching sign language so all the stories could be told.
Overall, this is a strong debut.
I received a copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
The Last Windwitch was an excellent story! I really enjoyed getting to know Brida and Mother Magdi and the whole world. The story was full of rich detail, exciting magic, and I LOVED the weather element with the storm horses. The book was suspenseful and wrapped up perfectly, and I couldn't put it down. I would highly recommend this to anyone interested in fantasy and middle grade, and I plan to keep a copy of this in my classroom library.
Another delightful middle grade fantasy debut to add to your TBR right now.
Once a land of prosperity and happiness, Fenwood Reach has been overcome by dark magic, after the last powerful Windwitch was driven from the land. In the small village of Oak Hollow, Brida, the hedgewitch’s apprentice, struggles to make her magic work as it’s meant to and manages to make a mistake that will change the course of her life-she catches the attention of the evil queen. As she runs from the queen’s huntsman and her all-seeing murder of crows, Brida begins to unlock the clues of her family, her magic, and who she is destined to be. With this knowledge will she be able to save those she loves and restore the magic in the land she lives in?
You’ll have to read it to find out.
This book contains all of my favorite middle grade fantasy attributes- magic rooted in nature, a brave young female protagonist, fantastical beasts, and a villain with imagination and a sense of humor.
During her journey, Brida discovers new villages and cities in what feels like an epic magical world, each different setting breathing new life into the story. Atmospheric and engrossing, Fenwood Reach also contains an eclectic group of characters both lovable and despicable you won’t soon forget. I also really enjoyed that this realm is deeply enriched with storytelling. This book is a great example which demonstrates that, in a world of good versus of evil, it’s our choices that determine our destiny.
Whether reading aloud to the family or a quiet evening in with a never ending bowl of ice cream, The Last Windwitch by @jenniferfadam is a book I’m sure you will enjoy.
Thank you @netgalley and @harpercollinsch for the opportunity to read and review this book.
Fantasy is my favorite genre and this cover is gorgeous so the book was an easy sell to hook me to pick it up. I appreciated the characters and the world building and think it will be a winner for any magic loving middle grade reader.
This very exciting story is about Brida, an apprentice witch who isn't very good at magical things. Her mentor, Mother Magdi, is very patient, but it doesn't seem to help. When Mother Magdi and Brida go out into the countryside to try to help the villagers, they realize the problem is bigger than they thought. Brida is kidnapped by a Huntsman and has to figure out a way to get back to Mother Magdi and save some of the friends she's made along the way. This is a really fun story and I was sorry when it was over. I think the kids are going to like this one a lot.
Brida spends her days being a sort of apprentice/ adopted daughter to Magdi who is the town’s forest witch. Little by little she discovers more about her own powers, past, and with the help of friends settles into a future she never imagined.
I love the fact that you didn’t rush the plot and let the readers wander around in this world picking up hints and slowly piecing it all together with Brida.
I loved it!
With thanks to NetGalley and HarperCollins Children's Books for an early copy in return for an honest review.
A beautifully written fantasy and I particularly enjoyed the world building of Oak Hollow and beyond. I also really enjoyed the stormhorses and the author did such a wonderful job of writing vivid descriptions I could feel their power and strength. Brida was well written and I found myself cheering for her throughout the book.
I would highly recommend this book to middle grade readers who enjoy fantasy...with family, adventure, magic, and mysteries.
