Maggie is so excited to receive new chopsticks. The first time she tries to use them, she hears a litany of "you're doing it wrong"s. Everyone is on this poor girl's case. She has to hide under the table to practice. Thankfully, there is one person in her family who is encouraging.
Although I didn't care for the story, I did like how the characters way of holding their chopsticks reflected their personalities. For example, Brother's grip is strong and bold and Sister's is graceful like a dancer. I would have enjoyed the story more if the family just showed Maggie their own styles instead of berating her.
The illustrations in the book are beautiful with rich colors and loads of detail. The two-page spread of Maggie trying to pick up a shrimp is just perfect.
