I'm a sucker for anything fairy tale-related and have an inexplicable attraction to the fake relationship trope, so when this popped up on my dash, I hit request. I'm sleep-deprived and cold because fall weather decided to show up like Maleficent at the birth announcement after we were hit with a heatwave, so I wanted to curl up with something light and fun for my brain. And since it's not quite Hallmark movie season yet, I settled for Fairy Godmothers, Inc. thinking it'd be a good substitute. It was a mistake.

Fairy Godmothers, Inc. is definitely not the kind of feelgood, cotton candy fluff that make made-for-TV Christmas movies such a ubiquitous guilty pleasure (and it's certainly not filled with the family-friendly you find on the Hallmark channel.) As much as Hallmark movies are mocked for their lack of depth and original content, Fairy Godmothers, Inc. is even worse. DeWylde goes on and on about how "there's more to a relationship than sex," but the first half of the book where sex is essentially the plot says otherwise. I finished this in a couple of hours, and while this is a quick read in general, the fact that I skipped chunks of paragraphs in the beginning definitely helped cut down on my reading time.

This reads like a really bad rom-com. (And yes, I know most rom-coms aren't necessarily characterized by amazing writing, but there are good-bad ones and bad-bad ones, and this is the latter.) The attempts at humor feel disingenuous which is kinda weird thing to say, but the whole thing felt like DeWylde was trying too hard to be funny. The characters are flat, and there's no real romance because the book pretty much starts out with Lucky and Ransom wanting to jump each other's bones. There's an attempt to tell an actual story about halfway through the book, but the obstacles are completely ridiculous. Just when you think it can't get any more over-the-top, it does. (It starts with the fact that they can't truly be together without horrible things happening and, I kid you not, it actually goes downhill from there.) I'd have an easier time suspending disbelief if you told me you were a fairy godmother who could fly than I would believing any of the reasons Lucky and Ransom gave for why they can't be together 🙄.

The best part of the book was Ever After, Missouri but there's nothing particularly special or original about the setting. The attempt to throw in some Japanese folklore (to mix things up a little, I guess?) doesn't seem to mesh well with the quaint, fairy tale-inspired small town vibes that were built for most of the book. This is apparently the first in a series and though there are attempts to drum up interest for subsequent books by introducing characters who will ostensibly end up in the sequels, I have no interest in reading more about the budding romance between Lucky's soon-to-be divorced BFF and Ransom's right-hand man, Rosebud Briar and Ravenna Blackheart, the reformed Evil Queen, Prince Phillip Charming the frog, or Zuri Davis, the heartbroken new hire at Fairy Godmothers, Inc.

A special thanks to Kensington Books for providing an ARC in exchange for what ended up being a very honest review.

2.5 stars, rounded up...

When I stumbled across Fairy Godmothers, Inc. on @netgalley, I was excited for a modern take on some classic fairytales!

I enjoyed the premise of the story surrounding the fairy godmothers’ mission to save their magical town, Ever After, although the way they go about saving it was quite cliche. The frog prince, talking animals, and scheming fairy godmothers put a smile on my face and were a great escape from reality, but overall, this was a fairly shallow story.

There isn’t much depth in terms of the characters and it’s so dialogue driven, that the setting was lost and that’s disappointing considering the creativity that could have gone into Ever After and it’s residents.

If you’re in a slump and looking for a reset, this may be a good option but a life changing read this one is not.

So tell me, do you enjoy modern takes on fairytales?

A cute novel to put a smile on your face! Nothing say love like 3 meddling old ladies! Add the fact that they are fairy godmothers and you got yourself a winner!

I loved authors take on fairy tales being real in the modern world! I also loved all the beautiful lesson and can’t wait for the next book.

Such a fun story. Great read. The author really draws the reader into the story. Will definitely read another book by this author.

Lucky Fujiki’s name is ironic as she is quite the opposite of lucky. Nothing goes right in her life, especially when it comes to love. Speaking of, Ransom Payne is actually quite lucky in life. With his very own fairy godmother, millions of dollars, and a growing business it seems like he has all he needs. All this changes when he is asked to help his fairy godmother and her town, Ever After, from losing magic forever. Ever After is a character within itself, containing reimagined characters from beloved fairy tales and a well-described setting.

This quick-paced read allowed a much needed break by providing lightheartedness and whimsy. The main characters Lucky, Ransom, and the godmothers are delightful and humorous, and I found I appreciated the secondary characters just as much. The author creates fantastic banter between all characters and the imaginative wordplay and plot held my interest throughout.

While the good by far outweighed the bad, there were two items that I struggled with in the novel. One is the a focus of the main characters sex life (or lack of) after repeated failed attempts (remember one of the characters is cursed) and a repeated phrase involving the “embarrassing incident” that seemed cheesy and weirdly important to the media. My second reason was there were a couple important plot elements that were not as clear as I would have liked and I had made incorrect inferences.

I am very glad I read this book, in one sitting, and will definitely be grabbing the second as I think I’ll like that coupling even more! If you like cute romances, fairytale references, cheesiness, humor, and meddling grandmothers, definitely check this book out! Thank you NetGalley and Kensington Books for a copy in return for an honest review. Release date December 29, 2020.

I love new takes on fairy tales and this is definitely one of the most original I have seen. I really liked that the main focus wasn't on revising an old tale, but still interspersed classic fairy tale characters within the story's world. It certainly made me wish Ever After was a real place!

As far as the story and characters, both were a lot of fun. I loved Lucky and Ransom as the leads - they were both interesting people as individuals so it wasn't their relationship that made them worthwhile. It was really clever to have Ransom realize that all the "bad luck" from Lucky actually led him to the life he wanted. All of the supporting characters from Gwen and Roderick to the fairy godmothers to the townspeople were well crafted and added to the story without weighing the story down. I am very much looking forward to book 2 to see how things go between Gwen and Roderick!

The only part of the story I thought was a little bit of a stretch involved the identify of Lucky's father. Lucky's reaction to the news was fantastic though!

Fairy Godmothers, Inc. is a cross between Enchanted (fun and doesn’t take itself too seriously) and Once Upon a Time (beloved characters in the middle of somewhere no one really knows). Our fairy tale characters are real and they live in a town in Missouri called Ever After. With magic depleting, a plan is hatched by three fairy godmothers to replenish it by having their godchildren pretend to marry one another as a publicity stunt. Love increases magic so maybe having a fairy tale wedding will increase the number of weddings booked at the castle.

The two protagonists Lucky and Ransom have to split the story to their happily ever after with introducing readers to the town and its cast of characters. While the story is entertaining overall, I wanted more time with our couple, especially because they have such interesting back stories, and their road to forever is pretty hilarious. This is a 3.5 star read for me. I liked the overall premise of the series (4 stars) but everything happened so quickly I didn't get to spend time with our main couple as much as I wanted (3 stars).

This book is a perfect comfort book. The story is cute, the characters are adorable, and it's full of good clichés. I couldn't keep smiling throughout the book, this was really what I needed; something simple and happy

This book is downright hilarious! I cracked up so much during this book- something I honestly did not expect.
This is a romance, however, there is so much going on that this book can be for anyone. Loved it!

Thank you to Netgalley for my advanced copy in exchanged for my honest review.

This was a REALLY cute book with loveable characters and an adorable plot. If you want a happy book with magic that will make you smile and forget about the scary world we live in, then you should pick it up without hesitation. What a perfect read. I loved it. Wonderful characters, happy ending. Just perfection.

Thank you Net Galley for an ARC of Fairy Godmother, Inc. This is a story of Ransom and Lucky and their pursuit of romance, love and happiness. Unfortunately I did not connect with these characters and the story line.

Thank you to NetGalley for an ARC of Fairy God mothers, Inc.

I'm not a romance genre fan, bu this premise filled me with such delight and eagerness, I was excited when my request was approved.

I thought this was going to be a bit like the show on channel 7, Once Upon a Time, but without the dark drama, and more magic but I found Fairy Godmothers, Inc. hard to get drawn into.

When I started reading, it felt like the story began a dozen chapters ago and I just began reading in the middle.

There's barely any exposition on Lucky and Ransom; when they got together, the Incident which shall not be named until much later, their past, and sadly, there's very little rapport or chemistry between the two.

Also, why is Lucky so un-lucky? I'm not sure the author ever explained it but if she did, I might have missed it because I was skimming a lot toward the end.

I did like Gwen and the loyalty of the best friends featured in here but, again, there's no exposition on how Lucky and Gwen became BFFs.

The premise of this series has great potential but the writing and pacing was uneven and character development poor.

Very very cute! I loved the way the fairy tale characters were woven into the story and I could picture everything about the town. I could really feel the pain and frustration of our hero and heroine, but there were quite a few legit LOL moments and I almost fell off my elliptical a few times from laughter. The whole time I was reading this I kept thinking this would be a great series and this would be so cute as a tv series; looks like it is the start of a, hopefully, fun series.

3.5 stars = I liked it. Her name is Lucky, though Unlucky would be appropriate. She believes she is cursed. But when her fairy godmother rope her into a scheme to make the magical town of Ever After into a destination wedding spot, a second chance at a first love that went disastrously wrong may just change her luck.

I thought this was a cute light romance with a touch of magic. The meddling fairy godmothers were fun as were the fairy tale residents of Every After. I liked poor Lucky and I liked the way that she weaponize her bad luck with one character who especially deserved it. I also liked the way she finally took control of her life at the end to get her HEA. My only nit is that her leading man needed to grovel, a lot. Don't think it's up next, but I'd like to see a HEA for the frog prince.

Lucky and Ransom in Fairy Godmothers, Inc.
Lucky, an artist, is the most unlucky young woman with a Fairy Godmother. In fact her bad luck spreads to others around her. In college she fell in love with yummy Ransom (he’s so yummy he runs a wildly successful chocolate empire). Unfortunately, their bad luck was colossal and pushed them apart. Many years later it seems Ransom and Lucky still have feelings for each other. Luckily they share the same godmothers who conspire to get them together. But it is a fairy tale so they both have quite a gauntlet to navigate for a Happily Ever After.
This was just a delight to read. Red Riding Hood and Grandma turned into bakers called Grammy and Red. The 7 dwarves made an appearance but were named after types of beers. These with the addition of a frog prince and kitsune were just some of my favorite secondary characters. The godmothers were a perfect blend of ditzy, insightful and sometimes risqué.
But this book is not for children. There are adult themes running through the book. I was reading it during the presidential debates in October 2020 and I adored coming back to this charming and whimsical book as I took a break. And rooting for Lucky and Ransom.
I would recommend this book to my patrons.

This one sounded so cute, I live a fairy tale inspired twist. Unfortunately it was a miss for me, I didn’t feel like the writing and pacing worked for my tastes. DNF

When I first read the blurb, I knew that I wanted to read this book. Having read and really enjoyed it, I’m now excited to reading the rest of the series!

We start with three adorable, charming, meddling, fairy godmothers and add a hopelessly in love couple (who, of course, just happen to be their godchildren). Mix in a large helping of humor and some spice (gighgle) and you get a delightful fairy tale love story which kept me smiling and chuckling late into the night. I loved it!

I would like to thank Saranna DeWylde, Kensington Books and NetGalley for the opportunity to read this Advanced Reader Copy in exchange for a fair and honest review.
