When Alexas sister Carrie is accused of a horrible crime, everyone including Alexas husband believes she is guilty except for Alexa. When it looks like the safety of her daughter is being threatened, Alexa must decide how much she trusts her sister and if she will bet her daughters life on it.
The story was definitely gripping, as I was reading the story felt like it was a bit obvious and normally this would leave me feeling a bit bored but I found myself wanting to see what happened with the characters enough to keep me turning the pages really quick. In the end I was proved wrong anyway and the story was definitely not obvious but the whole book was very enjoyable on a lot of levels. I liked that their were chapters that focussed on all different characters, it meant that there was a more rounded story than if you had just read it from Alexas viewpoint, definitely worth a read!
K.L. Slaters latest, The Girl She Wanted did not disappoint! It is full of twists and turns and will have you hooked from the very first page. I love a thriller that will keep me guessing, and this book will definitely have you guessing!
Thank you to netgalley for the arc in exchange for an honest review
I received an ARC copy of this book from Net Galley in exchange for my honest opinion of it. Alexa is very close to her sister, Carrie, and allows her to move into her home with her husband, Perry and their daughter, Florence, when Carrie's marriage fails. When Carrie is accused of murdering two patients at the hospital where she is employed as a nurse, Perry feels it is a danger for their daughter to be left alone with Carrie. There were twists along the book but I felt like there were unanswered questions also. I didn't really like the main character, Alexa. I felt like at some points she was tough and stood up for herself and other times, she just let people walk all over her. It was just okay for me.
Really enjoyed this book, it’s full of twists and turns that kept me guessing right till the end, definitely did not see the ending coming. Definitely worth reading!
One of my favorite authors so I knew I was gonna love it regardless but it was pretty good. Held my attention, I always seem drawn to stories like this, mother's who lost children or think they find them again later in life. This was an interesting twist on that. Would definitely recommend!
The last book I read by this author did not knock my socks off. I was a little leery of giving her another try but I’m glad i did! This book hit home to me as a nurse and some issues I’m going through. I was constantly questioning myself is she guilty or not. I wanted to holler at Alexa don’t leave her alone. This book drug me in and I couldn’t put it down. Highly recommend!
This is the first book I have read by this author but will definitely not be the last. This was a great psychological thriller that kept me guessing. Lots of twists and turns that I didn’t see coming. This was an easy read that I couldn’t put down. Thanks Netgalley for my copy in exchange for my honest opinion.
Senior ward nurse Carrie works in a big hospital and is accused of a horrendous crime whilst on duty.
Carrie lives with her Sister Alexa and they have a very caring and trusting relationship. The same cannot be said for Alexa's Husband Perry. All three of these have secrets they don't want to share with the others.
This is one of those books that you think about during your day and can't wait to get back to. This author writes interesting, productive books whilst also not complicating the story. The story builds to a series of twists and a very surprising ending. I loved it.
The Girl She Wanted by K.L. Slater is another page-turner from an author who rarely, if ever, disappoints. As with all of Ms Slater's previous books, I was gripped from the very first page. I love nothing more than immersing myself in a mystery that is virtually impossible to put down until all is revealed, and this was another winner for me.
Alexa is enjoying life with husband Perry and daughter Florence when her sister Carrie comes to stay, following the dissolution of her marriage. Alexa is happy for the support, and little Florence adores her auntie. When an accusation of two wrongful deaths is made at the hospital where Carrie is a ward manager, the safety of Florence becomes paramount as Carrie must answer to the charges.
This is a taut thriller that certainly kept me guessing. This was easily a five star read for me, up until an ending that I found to be anticlimactic. I cannot wait to see what comes next from Ms Slater. 4.5 stars
Many thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture for this ARC.
This was a light and easy read. It wasn’t majorly spectacular but had enough intrigue and twists to keep you reading and interested.
The author says in her note at the end that she is finding it harder and harder to please her readers as we all have such high expectations from these sort of books. I think she’s right, I have put K.L. Slater on a pedestal as one of her books is the first Psychological Thriller I ever read, and it started me off on the genre. I use her as my yardstick when reading other PTs. However, this also means that I have high hopes for her books and expect a little more than I should. I have been slightly disappointed in the past few books because of these barometers. So, with this one, I tried to enjoy it for what it was, a straightforward PT, that has lots of hooks, excitement and characters that pique your interest.
I didn’t know what the ending of this book would be and I certainly didn’t expect the outcome. I think as another reviewer has said, it is because it didn’t fit the narrative that we had been presented with earlier on in the book. The title is a little befuddling, also. Who is the girl, and who is she? I know a lot of titles are only sometimes on the periphery of the story, but this one had no bearing on the plot at all. I’m wondering if the book was supposed to take a different turn but didn’t?
Overall, not a bad read, not the best I’ve read by Slater but good enough for four stars!
K.L. is back with a bang with her latest offering The Girl she wanted. Another Excellent read.
Carrie Parsons has been living with her sister Alexa, her husband Perry, and their daughter Florence after her messy divorce, about eight months now. She is awfully close with her sister Alexa and they always support each other. Especially as Alexa is still not got over the death of her first child Daisy-Mae. She now has One-year old Florence who Alexa asks helps with when she is not working at the hospital as a Ward manger at the local hospital A & E. When one day Carrie is accused of a terrible crime the unexplained deaths of two patients one which was a child. At first Carrie does not confide in her sister until the police arrive at the door. Alexa though, is naïve and they have got the wrong person. Except for Perry, who wants Carrie out of the house ASAP.
I can’t really explain how good this book is. You think you know what is going on in this book and then there is another twist. This is a gripping thriller and kept me hooked. There are not many books that I read in one sitting, but this is one of them. I didn’t want to stop. I highly recommend.
Another page turner by Ms Slater. The prose is simple and easy to read and the twists are good but what I felt shallow was the main plot itself. It was obtuse and improbable unlike her other books. The side tracks were good, the characters not much likeable. 3.5 stars
I liked this book like all of KL slaters books, but it didn’t really wow me like some of her other novels. It was pretty average. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for a free copy in exchange for review.
3.5/5
Rating: 4.1 / 5
I wouldn't say that the twist in this is as "jaw dropping" as advertised, but the story does what it needs to do, and satisfyingly so. I wouldn't compare it to either Gone Girl or The Girl on the Train, as suspicions are a bit higher in those books as there's a lot of malicious intent confirmed and not just suspected, but nevertheless, K.L. Slater's The Girl She Wanted does have its place up there as being a good domestic suspense novel.
What I liked most about this book was how interestingly benign things were. I've been using that word a lot this year in describing the books I read, but unfortunately, most of those books were boringly benign, not interestingly benign. There's just a difference in the way that "normalcy" is portrayed, whether you buy into it enough to care what happens and want to read further. Fortunately, I did.
This is my second book by K.L. Slater so far, and that I've noticed is that she really gets the concerned mother role done well. It's frantic, caring, and perhaps a bit paranoid at times, but ultimately is solicits sympathy from the reader, and that in itself is enough to get the story going. Add to that uncertain circumstances regarding a crime or crimes committed, and you've got a compelling starting point for a plot. Developing that, however slowly, over time and then wrapping up with a neat little conclusion is likewise a good tactic to use in writing a book of this type.
So far, I think I'm going to group K.L. Slater as a "comfortable" read of this genre, in that things are interesting enough to keep me invested, but at the same time mild enough that they never quite reach that 5-star "le gasp/swoon/faint" stage of mystery-suspense novels. I'll be reading some more of her works too and looking forward to it.
As always, K L Slater's books are always page-turners!
A wonderful read with great characterization! Suspense Galore!!!
Carrie, an A&E nurse for 20 years, is divorced from Cameron. She now lives with her sister, Alexa, and Alexa's husband, Perry. They have a baby, Florence who Carrie loves.. BUT - Alexa will not go out alone. She must be with Carrie or Perry every time. The reader wants to know why.
A scapegoat? Carrie is arrested for the unnatural death of two patients. This, due to Dr. Nathan Mosley's whistle-blowing on the A&E team. Is Carrie guilty? Can Alexa deal with Carrie being arrested since her husband works on the oil rigs and is out of town for weeks at a time?
A superb read. Many Thanks to Bookouture and NetGalley for a brilliant suspense story!
Slater is a dependable author for a good tale with an unpredictable ending, often out of left field. The Girl She Wanted was a mix of a domestic noir and a police procedural. Told from the perspective of Alexa, who when we meet her, is a somewhat fragile woman, a new mother to Baby Florence, the center of her life, and rather over protective due to a previous instance hinted at through the book but not revealed until much much later. Her sister, Cassie, who seems to be over protective of Alexa is a ward nurse and mysterious deaths are happening on her watch. Carrie become more sinister and Alexa more assertive as the story develops. Basically, can Alexa trust Carrie to supervise Florence when she’s under suspicion and staying in the house?
Wow another fantastic book from this Author. Never seems to disappoint. Just when you think you know what's going on a fantastic twist to turn things up a knoch. This author knows how to write and draw you into the story.
Put this one on your to read list!!
Thanks to the author, the publisher and NetGalley for an early release of this book.
What if my sister is unstable and everyone can see it but me? What was she really doing standing over Florence’s cot in the middle of the night?
What a jaw dropping book! WOW
Total suspense thriller. I love K.L. Slater books.
She doesn't hold back, and her writing is amazing.
Thank You NetGalley, Publisher and Author for this copy !
When Nathan Mosley, an A&E junior doctor turns whistleblower regarding 2 unexplained deaths, it isn’t long before the police are investigating.
Carrie Parsons is living with her sister, Alexa, Alexa’s husband Perry and their baby daughter Florence, following her messy divorce. The atmosphere is permanently fraught as Perry wants Carrie out of the house so they can have their home back.
Suspicion quickly falls on Carrie, who is the A&E manager regarding the unexplained deaths. Where does Carrie keep on disappearing to whilst she has been suspended from her job? Lots of secrets and lies are uncovered while waiting for the truth to be revealed.
This is a brilliant psychological thriller from KL Slater, she never disappoints. A tortuous and intricate read that had me absorbed throughout. Well written characters with some that I really didn’t take to! I can highly recommend this book.
My thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture for an advanced copy in exchange for my honest review.
A solid four star read. Good premise. Great characters. Enjoyed the writing style. Plenty of suspense to keep me guessing. It even had a twist that I didn’t see coming. Would definitely read her next novel. Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the chance to review it.
