3.5 Hearts If given the chance would you believe your own sister or your husband? And would you trust your sister with your precious child or trust your husband’s instinct and keep her far away?
I had a hard time getting into this book but once I did I enjoyed it. There was some suspense as to why Carrie was fired and did she really hurt the people she was nursing which I found interesting and kept me wanting to read to find out what really happened.
I also worried for the baby. The title led me to believe something was going to happen one way and that then it didn’t. So I kept waiting.
Interesting read.

I received a complimentary copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.
This is the first book I have read from this author and I shall now look for others.
I found I was intrigued by this story from the beginning. There are secrets and lies and I didn't know who to trust. I found the Alexa character annoying to start with, however when you find out her secrets her behaviour is understandable.
The ending was a surprise which I wasn't expecting. I found this very well written and I enjoyed not knowing who to trust. I recommend this book.
Gripped from the beginning. Storyline really kept you turning the pages. A lot of dynamics with each character having there own story to tell. I liked the pace of the book and it flowed well that it kept you just at the cusp of getting to the truth of something but still kept you holding on. Not sure if I really liked any of the characters as they all had there dislikable tendencies and I just couldn’t take to them but I think that added to the book. Good read, would recommend.
Thanks to Netgalley and Bookouture for the opportunity to read this ARC and review that was published on the 22nd of Oct.
This book had a slow beginning but a great ending. I was super happy I couldn't guess what would happen. The plot was slow to start, it wasn't until roughly 50% in where it finally picked up and I couldn't put the book down. I'm always a fan of POV books, if you like them, you'll enjoy this.
Carrie, a senior nurse, has been accused of wrongfully killing two patients. She has been suspended pending investigation. Carrie tries to prove her innocence while her sister, Alexa tries to help. However, things keep happening. Alexa's daughter is harmed. Is Carrie not who she thought she was? Everyone in this book has secrets, secrets don't stay quiet for long!
It was a great suspense book, if you can get through the first half. It's definitely worth it!
Thank you to NetGalley for providing me with an Advanced Copy in exchange for an honest review.
Another great story from one of my favourite authors. I found it gripping from the very beginning with so many twists. I had no idea how all of the ends would be tied up. Highly recommended . I loved it.
I really like K.L Slater but this isn’t one of her best.
It’s an exciting, thrilling story but it’s lacking ...something. I loved the huge amount of secrets though! Very juicy book! Alexa was naive beyond believability and that’s probably my biggest peeve with The Girl She Wanted.
You will be left wondering who’s guilty, there’s so many dodgy characters and it could be any of them!
Daisy Mae was a waste of time, bringing that up 60% of the way in? Not cool, bad writing.
A respectable 3.5/5 - this could be better but if you’re looking for a quick thrilling read by an established author then this is the book for you!
First, I want to thank K. L. Slater for providing me with this book so I may bring you with this review.
If you know me then you know I love all things medical! So when I found out K.L. Slater wrote The Girl She Wanted I knew this was going to be must read! Oh boy! K. L. Did not disappoint either!
WOW! What a story!! Two different patients in the hospital tragically died from something so unusual, unnatural, and unexplained! How in the world could this have happened? This book was very fast paced, suspenseful, mind boggling, etc.
K.L. Brings awareness to a very heartbreaking tragedy Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. My heart goes out to all the readers who had this happen to them.
I loved the bond that the two sisters Carrie and Alexa had together. Alexa seemed to be her protector. But what was so cute was how Auntie Carrie was like a second Mommy to Florence. I can understand that. I love my nieces and nephews like they were my own. There is nothing I wouldn’t do for my sister or them.
It was cute that Alexa always wanted to be a Disney princess growing up.
K.L. Really surprised me on how I found myself so engaged in the investigation storyline and everything around it. It was really intense and quite interesting. I have read many crime books before for Bookouture but this one seemed different. I couldn’t get enough of this book!
One after the other shocking revelations come out in The Girl She Wanted. I was not emotionally ready for that wicked twist coming a mile a way! It blew my mind!!
K.L. Made me get out the tissues at the very end of the book! Oh yes, she made me ugly cry! This is what makes K.L an incredibly gifted writer!
Holy cow, there's a lot going on in this book!
I thought the story was going down the "angel of mercy" track, but boy was I wrong! There are so many secrets (well, doesn't everyone have secrets?), but K.L. Slater does a great job of letting you know you don't know the whole story.
Her characterization takes us from empathizing with Carrie, a nurse in a hospital who is a wonderful support to her sister Alexa and so great with her niece Florence, to suspecting her of the horrible things she's accused of. Alexa develops from someone we are worried about, to becoming almost strident in her defense of her sister. And don't even get me started on Alexa's husband, who tries to control her behavior from his job away from home. All that is to say, you will get pulled into the plot so quickly that you won't even realize how badly these characters are behaving. As the suspense mounts, you won't even know who to root for because really, they all seem guilty.
There was a little too much extra information at the ending and even after reading it I don't get the title, but it didn't take away from enjoyment of the book. And full disclosure, I am a total K.L. Slater fan!
Thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture for an advance reader's copy for review.
Oh my, oh my, oh my, I should have been doing housework, but I was too busy reading this book! This is one of the best books, I have read in awhile. I have never read K.L. Slater, but I will be reading in the future
Thanks to Netgalley and Bookouture for an early copy of The Girl She Wanted in exchange for an honest review.
I really enjoyed this book, Alexa's sister Carrie is suspended from her job as senior nurse and accused of a terrible crime of killing an elderly man and 6 month old baby. Everyone turns on Carrie and believes that she is guilty, except her sister Alexa who is adament that Carrie is innocent. But if Carrie is innocent, then who killed the two patients? Can Alexa trust Carrie with her one year old child Florence?
The Girl She Wanted is an excellent psychological thriller that had me guessing until the end. At one point I was suspecting everyone of the crime, while trying to figure out what part they actually played in everything. It is written from various points of view which adds to the suspence and mystery of the story. There are a few twists and turns throughout that I was not expecting, which added to the story making it a very good read. I really enjoyed The Girl she Wanted and would highly recommened if you want to read a fast paced, twisting, turning psychologicall thriller.
Carrie and Alexa are sisters, and Alexa depends on Carrie for many things, among which is lookkng after her year old daughter Florence. Perry, Alexa's husband, is not too happy with the sisters being so close, since Carrie also lives with them aince her divorce. Carrie is a Ward manager at the A&E at the local hospital and is currently suspended on suspicion of 2 unexplained deaths at the hospital.
Carrie maintains she is innocent but her behavior is contrary. Florence has an accident while in Carrie's care and this complicates the equations evwn further. All three characters have a secret they are hiding from each other.
The story talks about the bond and dependency between the sisters and how eventually they find their own paths.
Thank you Netgalley, K.L Slater and Bookouture foe the ARC.
The title feels a bit misleading.
The Girl She Wanted is the latest psychological thriller by KL Slater . I have read and loved all this authors previous books. In this book Carrie Parsons has moved in temporarily to live with her sister Alexa and Alexa’s husband Perry and their baby daughter Florence. Carrie adores her little niece. Carrie works at a local hospital and after she is accused of something terrible her life begins to fall apart and many people are suspicious of her.
I really enjoyed this book and it kept me guessing the whole way through. KL Slater has a great writing style that you never feel that you want to skim read through any parts of the book for fear you’ll miss any bit of it. Once I started reading I found it difficult to put this book down until I got to the end . Another excellent psychological thriller by this author. One thing puzzled me was the actual title of the book as it didn’t appear to have any connection to the story .
Another great suspenseful novel by an awesome author! This book will leave you guessing as to who the "bad" character really is. You will become embroiled in Alexa's life and will be taken through a journey that most people cannot relate to. It is so easy to make an accusation, but how do you really prove you are innocent. There are many twists and turns in this book, and it will keep your attention all the way though. I have read many books by this author and enjoy them all!
I loved the story. I cried and was afraid and wanted to know everything. Everything about what had happened to Alexa. What made her so terrified of living.
Which secrets made Carrie act the way she did.
And, honestly, the story plays right to every fear people have when seeking hospital Carey. Every single one. That somebody might miss something or make a mistake with the medication.
Thank you Netgalley, Bookouture and K. L. Slater for this great opportunity.
Well written psychological thriller with lots of twists and turns.
Lots of secrets are revealed and a jaw dropping ending.
Loved the 2 sisters Alexa and Carrie, the support and love they had for each other during the good and bad times.
Alexa husband, Perry, I did not like his characters and especially not the secret that was revealed about him. What a jerk.
Overall, loved the story and I have to admit I love reading anything by K.L. Slater.
Recommend. 4 stars.
A corker of a read with loads of suspense and thrills.
An edge of the seat read that politely kicks you in the gut and will knock you for six.
Best thing I have read in a while.
I enjoyed this book immensely and would highly recommend it.
Brilliant author brilliant psychological book. This book has so many scenarios you always think you know the answer and boom it twists again
I enjoyed the build up of this story and the little twists up until about 75%, but the “tell” was really anti-climatic. It didn’t match up with any of the rest of the story, and then I felt that the book went on too long afterward. I care about Alexa regaining her independence, but not enough to read so many more chapters about it. Still a fun read though and I’ll look for this author again!
I love Kim Slater’s writing style and always look forward to reading her books. I liked the characters and there were definitely sone jaw-droppers that I did not see coming! This one was a bit of a slow burn and it took me several days to read. It didn’t really grab me until the last 20% or so of the book. I totally loved the ending although parts of it were bittersweet. All of the storylines tied up and were explored and explained. Slater’s books are always ones I will buy without even reading the description because I know they’ll be great!
There are authors that you know will always give you a gripping book. You see the name, you don't even read the blurb, you just grab it because you know you won't be dissapointed.
K.L Slater is deffinitely one of these authors for me. She always has this storyline, with minimal characters so it is easy to follow, but just with them few characters she is able to construct these massive webs of lies and deceit. But the way she so artfully divulges all of the secrets, the twists, the turns and the constant doubt of your own guesses is brilliant.
I was hooked on Carrie and Alexa's story right from the start. Because that is where the suspicion and questions begin and they don't stop. I cant wait to read more K.L Slater in the future and to continue to love her writing.
