I’m trying to clean up my backlog and realized that while I had read and rated this on Goodreads, I never actually posted my review.
I enjoyed the fairytale vibes of House of Hollow. It was dark and eerie. I loved the premise and how descriptive the writing was. The beginning hooked me and I liked the mystery but the plot dragged at parts so it took a few days to get through it.
Sometimes I struggle to get into fantasy, but I enjoyed this one. I enjoyed the darker elements of the YA fantasy book and the plot of the book. I'll be reading more by this author.
Thank you to NetGalley and Penguin Group for this DRC.
This book feels like a long walk in a dark forest, sometimes something is lurking and sometimes all you can do is stare at the beauty.

I finished reading House of Hollow last night (Halloween) and I’ve gotta say, it was a pretty perfect book for spooky season. It was dark and haunting and gruesome and mysterious. If that’s your thing then add this book to your TBR for sure. I’m glad I finally read this after receiving the NetGalley a billion years ago.
"My sisters. My blood. My skin. What a gruesome bond we shared.
So I'm years late to this YA fantasy/horror experience, but wow did it still deliver one creeptastic ride.
Although this story does have a fully fleshed out plot -- complete with haunting twists and stomach-churning turns -- I think its biggest selling point is its atmospheric vibe. I don't know how else to describe it beyond saying that I felt this book. I could see the nightmarish couture, smell the rotting forest, and felt every last drop of dread that plagued this trio of sisters.
Sutherland delivered a truly unique fairytale-esque narrative that was dark, bold, and downright unsettling. There were moments I wasn't sure I could push through, but 'tis the season for chilling reads. And although the reveals were a bit too wild for me, the writing is lyrical, impactful, and melds beautifully with this type of story.
If you're looking for a grim fantasy adventure with lush descriptions, eerie environments, and sinister scenes, pick this one up this Halloween.
I realized that I somehow never left a review for this book and it's literally like 2 years later and I STILLLLLLL think about how this book ended (and I loved it and need more in this world.) I loved the dynamics between the sisters.
This book is eerie, captivating, unsettling. The spooky vibes are unmatched and if anyone knows me its that spooky time is all the time.
If you want a book that keeps you on the edge and creeps you out, but don't want to read a full-on horror novel. PICK THIS UP.
I couldn't wait to get my hands on this book and it was 100% worth it. I couldn't put it down. I loved learning about each of the sisters and the supernatural past
This book is haunting in the best possible way. Iris' story is one that will stick with me for a long while. The characters and setting Ms. Sutherland created paired with her complex and intricate story telling make this a standout among the influx of YA paranormal books on today's shelves. I know there isn't currently a promise of an immediate sequel, but I truly hope that one (or a companion novel) will eventually happen.
House of Hollow follows the perspective of Iris Hollow who has always been strange. Her and her sisters were captured when they were children and none of them can remember what happened to them during that time. Iris isn’t like her sisters who embrace their strangeness, she just wants to be normal. But when her older sister Grey goes missing she is sucked into it and while searching for her sister she uncovers the truth about what happened when they were children.
This book started out a bit slow for me, so it was a bit hard to get into. The story is very atmospheric, which I enjoyed, and also all the creepy flower imagery. It had cottagegore vibes which I loved! I enjoyed how the author showed the different dynamics the sisters had like Iris/Grey and Iris/Viv. The narrative gives sufficient insight into each of their relationships. I found the story repetitive at times because Iris spends a lot of time explaining the strangeness of her sisters, but I did like Iris’s journey in regards to her adoration for Grey. The story depicts how admiring someone and wanting to be like them on that level that Iris desires is dangerous and leads to overlooking the person and who they are. I also enjoyed the twist of the House of Hollow was an eerie, atmospheric, and creepy read. I recommend to anyone who enjoys YA Horror or looking to read a book with sisters.
I received a copy of this recently because my sister had it for a while, but I plan to read it soon! I am only giving it a three star rating right now.
This book is one of my top reads for the year! With the creepy feels of flowers blooming out of open wounds, this book uses imagery in a way that brought this mystery horror to life! I was on the edge of my seat from the beginning following the three Hollow sisters and the mystery of their disappearance.
If you enjoyed this book, check out Mexican Gothic.
What an interesting and compelling YA book! It's a blend between contemporary, fantasy, mystery, and horror! I flew right through it -- highly recommend it if you're looking for a quick yet spooky read.
House of Hollow is a middle of the road dark-fairytale narrative that spends far too much time reined in instead of delivering on the darkly twisted premise that was promised.
Are these sisters insane? Or are the other-worldly things that see actually happening?
I put off reading this one because I thought it would be too scary for me. But when Colleen Conway Ramos recommends something? You should read it.
Lush, moody, and perfectly creepy, this the spooky tale of three sisters who will risk everything to save each other. Fantastic. But now I need a romcom.
Creepy. Suspenseful. Different. The House of Hollow was unlike any book I’ve read in a long time. It kept my interest and made me want to know so much more about these sisters.
The three Hollow sisters are strange. They went missing when they were younger and mysteriously showed up one month later with no memories of what happened. They have some weird abilities now and their relationship with their parents had never been the same. Then one of them goes missing….and they try to find her and they think it has to do with their disappearance all those years ago.
It was a very different tale. Loved how it delved into the changling fairy stories and I loved the bond between the sisters. Did not like Tyler - felt he was not necessary to the story. I just wish I had more information about this world inbetween and more info after. Otherwise perfect Halloween read!
Seventeen-year-old Iris Hollow has always been strange. Something happened to her and her two older sisters when they were children, something they can’t quite remember but that left each of them with an identical half-moon scar at the base of their throats.
This book was interesting. It kept me intrigued. I wanted to know what happened to the girls and I definitely didn't guess what happened but I also didn't like the end. No spoilers, it just didn't seem to fit with the rest of the book to me. That said, I know several other people that read this book and absolutely LOVED it so I might be the outlier.
Didn't capture my attention and engagement. Interested in trying it again though and hopefully it will take.
Oh my gosh, this book gave me the chills! I am not a fan of thrillers but this book was good and I enjoyed it a lot. It was not my cup of tea but I would recommend it to any thriller fan.
3.5 stars. My thoughts on this one are a little weird. I didn't love it like I was hoping to, but I also somehow ended up liking it more than I expected to???? Lol the writing style of this one was a little odd so it took me a bit to get into the story, but once I did I ended up finishing the book in one sitting because I was just so captivated by the eerie whimsy of it all. With that being said, I think I didn't like this as much as I was hoping to because I found that once the big reveal happened it ended up being a little... lackluster? Idk how to describe it better than that lol but overall this was captivating and fun, but not exactly the new favorite I was hoping it would be.
CW: death of a loved one, suicide, sexual assault, body horror
I remember starting House of Hollow when I was in the hospital with the Babe. (I mean . . . the nurses wake mom up every hour so what else was I supposed to do?) I had to set this book aside because I’ve not been able to stomach anything scary since I was pregnant. Has anyone else experienced that? It’s like my brain is too busy worrying about baby to handle the stress of a horror or thriller book. Anyways I finally picked this book back up 10 months later. This book is very atmospheric like a dark cottage core full of mystery and creepy crawlers. TBH at points I was like WTH am I reading?! There are very disturbing parts. Even though this book was not for me, I still gave it 3.5/5 ⭐️ because I cannot deny how good the writing is.
