Wow! I don't think I expected to like this as much as I did. It was super dark and twisted. It has a couple of my favorite tropes like strong family bonds and road trips. Some things happened that I wasn't expecting at all and I liked that it caught me off guard. It kept me on my toes. It did get a little repetitive at some points with the sisters constantly going missing and the reappearing but it wasn't so annoying that it ruined the book or anything. I read this in one sitting because there was something constantly going on and I couldn't put it down.

A strong 4 stars! This creepy story was very original, well-written, and perfectly paced. This is one of the best YA horror/thriller novels I have read. I really liked the characters and the London setting.

First off a big thank u to Penguin Teen for sending me an arc of this one! This review will have my honest opions/thoughts!
House of hollows by Krystal sutherland is a Young Adult thriller/mystery novel. For this being my first book by this author it took me a little while to get into the story because there are a lot of characters and backstory that we had to learn about. We are following a group of sister, the three of them were kiddnapped and taken to the woods and come back 3 years later not remembering what happened..
So like I mentioned this follows a group of sister who goes missing and then come back a few years later. Irirs is our main character and she was super intrugiing from the beginnning of the novel. I really love how quiet and simple she was living. Her older sister is grey and she is the most famous one, because she became a modle after her return....
So overall I really enjoyed this novel it was so fast pace and a little repative at time, but other than that I really enjoyed it and feels like there could be a sequel soon??

However you want to pigeon-hole House of Hollow- suspense, horror, whatever you want to call it- it’s not normally the type of genre that I gravitate towards. But in all honesty, House of Hollow has given me a new appreciation for scary books. While the protagonist can come off a little bit fanfiction-perfect, and senses- particularly taste and smell- were relied on far too heavily, I was just absolutely blown away by how the relationship between these three main characters, the sisters, was explored. Maybe I can attribute this, at least a little bit, to the fact that I don’t read books in this genre, but I tend to be someone who guesses the ending pretty easily... and I did not. At all. I will 100% be rereading this book once it’s actually finished being published and I highly recommend it.

Every time I go for a hike and see a small trail leading off into the woods, I immediately want to follow it. Where does it lead? What will I find? My imagination begins to run wild, and I dream up scenarios where I end up in a magical word full of elves and magic. After reading HOUSE OF HOLLOW, those daydreams have taken a turn😱

I've always loved a good YA horror, but this book went above and beyond all my expectations. Yes, I know it's marketed as "dark fantasy" but this book is horror.

It follows the story of the three Hollow sisters: Grey, Vivi, and Iris. They went missing as children, and were found one month later, naked, in the same spot they were last seen. They claim to not remember anything, but is that true?

Fast forward 10 years, and once again, Grey Hollow is missing. Iris and Vivi are trying to find her, but instead find things like strange flowers growing in places they shouldn't be, dead bodies, conspiracy theories about their lives, and are chased by a masked, horned man. All this, while trying to figure out what secrets Grey has been hiding.

HOUSE OF HOLLOW is not for the faint of heart. It's dark and twisted, like ancient woods, full of deadly secrets, lush, atmospheric writing, and will make your skin crawl for all the wrong reasons. It's everything I never knew I wanted in a book, and I am officially obsessed.

Content warnings: violence, body horror, graphic descriptions, suicide, sexual assault, and kidnapping.

Thank you so much Penguin Teen Canada for sending me a digital ARC of this book via NetGalley!

Could not stop reading this. It was absolutely unreal. Never saw any of it coming. Am interested in a potential sequel. Really well written. This is not my preferred genre, but I was gripped to the page. I was mad I read it early and had no one to talk about it with!

so eery. so weird. unputdownable, because i just had to know what it all meant. i have to admit, there are so many questions that remain unanswered but are enough breadcrumb for a sequel.

I absolutely adored this book. House of Hollow was so hyped in my circle of bookish friends, and it started off so strong I was scared I wouldn't like the direction it went. But trust me it didn't disappoint.

House of Hollow is an urban fairytale inspired by the Grimm brothers that is straight up unputdownable. There was always something pulling me in whether it was the writing, the mystery, or the action. I always wanted to keep reading. We follow the three Hollow sisters who disappeared New Year's Eve 10 years prior. A month later the three girls reappear out of thin air, naked, with no memory of what occurred, and with a moon shaped scar at their base of their throats. Nobody could figure out what happened to them and theories about what could have possibly occurred started swirling on the internet for years to come. The girls came back changed which impacted their family forever. In present day we follow the youngest sister, Iris, and her other sister Viv as they begin investigating the recent disappearance of their oldest sister, which is reminiscent of what happened to them years ago.

The biggest thing that stood out to me in this book was obviously the writing. It was so lyrical and whimsical but is a horrifying way. The way the prose was string together was beautiful but also gross and terrifying at the same time. The writing also incorporated a lot of nature elements which I really loved. I know some people think the writing was repetitive, but I think it was just the perfect amount.

Krystal Sutherland was able to create one of the creepiest and unsettling books I've read. The way she twisted things we generally see as beautiful and innocent into demonic and grotesque was stunning. I was actually anxious while reading this which is not something I feel often when reading.

Within only a couple hundred pages, there were so many layers backed into this book. There was the extremely horrifying mystery, grief, and sister relationships. This story is absolutely brilliant in the way it was woven together, and I just loved every second of reading it. The ending had me absolutely shook and mind blown! This book is incredibly haunting, and it will definitely stick with me for a long time.

Thank you to G.P. Putnam's Sons Books, Krystal Sutherland, and NetGalley for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Trigger warnings: blood, gore, violence, murder, attempted murder, death, death of a loved one, self-harm, suicide, body horror, attempted sexual assault, PTSD, and alcoholism

I really enjoyed the imagery of this book. There is something breathtaking but also very grotesque about some of the scenes which made the book even more interesting. I also loved Sutherland's spin on the classic changeling lore.

Excuse me while I panic. This book scared me LOL - Thank you to the publisher for allowing me early access to this title. This YA horror was just what I needed to get myself out of a reading slump. It was haunting, creepy, I couldn't stop reading. Iris knew that something was wrong ever since her and her sisters went missing for a month and returned. Their black eyes, a scar on their chest... and more. Grey disappears once again and her sisters set out on a mission to find her while having to go head on with their past.

This is a book that makes you think. It makes you wonder if what you're reading is actually happening - unreliable narrators are my jam. This book has such great world building, characters that you care about, and pages that turn and turn and turn. I highly recommend for other scaredy cats like me!

House of Hollow was one of the most atmospheric and haunting books I have read in a while. Immediately the story pulls you in to the mystery of what happened to the Hollow sisters. After the three sisters disappeared in their childhood for a month, they came back with no memory of where they had gone or what happened to them. Instantly, those around them noticed changes in both appearance and demeanor. As the story unfolds, we see that the girl's past is coming back to them and its not bright. This story keeps the reader on the edge of their seat with action around every turn. Solid horror/fantasy YA novel.

This was a very unique fairy tale. The changelings were unique and fun to hang out with. I felt sorry for the original children, but also wanted the changelings to succeed. Thanks for confusing me, it was fun.

House of Hollow by Krystal Sutherland is deliciously creepy and beautifully dark. Drawing on traditional changing myths and melding them together with the minotaur, succubi, afterlife, and siren folklore, it is safe to say that this book is unlike anything I have ever read. By combining elements of fantasy, horror, and the supernatural Sutherland creates a world and a story that is original and terrifying. I did not see the twists coming, and the air of mystery continued until the last sentence. I will recommend this book to anyone who will listen! Reading this book truly was like falling through "a crack in the world."

House of Hollow follows seventeen-year-old Iris, one of the three Hollow sisters who, a decade before, disappeared off the streets of Edinburgh only to reappear a month later. Iris can’t remember what happened before she disappeared, but she does know that she came back different- her eyes turned black, her dark hair slowly turned pale blonde, and a half-moon scar appeared at the base of her throat. Now ten years later, Iris’s two sisters have moved out and Iris is attempting to have a normal high school experience- until her eldest sister, Grey, disappears again without a trace.

Krystal Sutherland delivered a dark, twisty mystery I won’t forget anytime soon. What I adored most about House of Hollow was its flowery, haunting writing (not unlike the gorgeous cover). This book, an alluringly grotesque modern fairy tale, delivers on the unsettling, paranormal elements, and I couldn’t put it down. This book isn’t heavy on the romance, but follows a queer main character.
The combination of House of Hollow’s writing style and a compelling storyline had me head over heels for the most part. However, a couple of decisions made by characters around the three quarters mark didn’t seem to line up- they didn’t add to the plot, didn’t aid character development, and turned me off from the story. Those grievances aside, I’m excited to see if Krystal Sutherland will continue writing in the horror genre.

Ten years ago on New Year's Eve, the three Hollow sisters, Grey, Vivi and Iris disappeared. They returned one month later to the same alley they had disappeared from, an antique folding knife in hand. The sisters now each possess a crescent moon shaped scar across their throats and white blonde hair, when it used to be black. They each seem to have gained strange abilities, they didn't have before. The girls don't remember anything that happened to them, and their father, Gabe, becomes suspicious of their changes. Years later, Grey is missing once again and it is up to Vivi, Iris and Tyler, Grey's boyfriend to find her before she's gone forever.

This was one of my most anticipated releases for 2021, and I was not disappointed. The synopsis sounded spooky and right up my alley, not to mention that GORGEOUS cover...Right from the first chapter, you are hooked into the Hollow sisters story. There is so much suspense and mystery surrounding these sisters and their disappearance. The atmosphere is so spooky and creepy and I loved the descriptions through out the story. I didn't expect the book to get as dark as it did, but I loved every second of it. I was so invested in trying to figure out what happened to them ten years ago, and how it connected to Grey's disappearance in the future. I was so intrigued by these characters, and couldn't stop reading, wanting to know more about their backstory. I loved how different each of the sisters were and how they each brought something unique to the story.

I did end up taking a star off, because I figured the story and a lot of the major plot points out pretty quickly, but it was still a really great read and I highly recommend it!

Pros: Magical and crooked. House of Hollow is the perfect twisted and lustful fairy tale, filled with dangerous beauty. Like a gift and a curse.

There are MANY fantastic components that are intertwined with the main storyline, which kept surprising me over and over. Needless to say, I was hooked from the start! With paranormal aspects, mentions of folklore, increasingly gory writing and cracks in dimensions, it is truly phenomenal.

I still cannot comprehend how Sutherland managed to thread all those captivating plots and sub plots together. But she made it work! My brain the entire time was like, WOAH.

House of Hollow is the type of book that creates new things to fear in the dark. It throws you down a sinister rabbit hole of sickening creatures in a world that leaves you shaken.

I have not read this type of supernatural thriller in SO long, and boyyy I should read more. Every page pulled me deeper into the world of alluring darkness and disturbing celestial happenings.

Cons: None!

I really enjoyed this book. It was definitely dark and nasty as it was giving. I enjoyed the plot twist a lot and the story itself was just really well written.

I loved this story! Dark fairy tales with paranormal presences for the win. The only comic relief was Tyler, who was aloof and really weighed the two sister investigation down with his over the top outfits that were not at all suitable for three person search parties. Fair warning that this is also the smelliest book that I’ve read. There was a lot of funk that made me never want to venture into this setting. Think rotten, dead things, with a hint of floral perfume to even it out.

One character that kept me entranced throughout was the constant, yet unexplainable, evil presence. Even when it wasn’t physically found in the pages of the story, its presence, gnawed at me in an unpleasant way, anxiety at an all time high. This book would make a terrifying movie, but I would also be in line for the midnight showing.
