Deborah, a mother with a daughter who left and never returned. Deborah hasn't talked to Sibley in several years, she was not invited to her daughters wedding and has no relationship with her besides those of her teenage years. Deborah still lives on the family farm trying to move on with her life, she has started seeing someone in secret, going to therapy, and living. Until her daughter unexpectedly returns home.

Sibley, is a divorce attorney who's drinking problem has caused the partners at the firm to ask her to take a leave of absence to get help. Her husband doesn't trust her, and on the day she was to attend rehab she never shows. Instead she returns home to the Midwestern farm her Mother still lived at to work through the issues and the past that followed them.

The characters in The Imposter, were interesting. I enjoyed the narration of Deborah, with the confusion and suspicion she was interesting to follow. Sibley I had many times wanted to yell at her asking what or why she was doing what she was doing. The environment of a out of town farm with the small town feel was on the mark, having been to small towns I see the same interactions described that might happen.

Overall, I gave this novel a โญโญโญ review. Some of the language felt choppy, and there were many phrases repeated that I didn't think were needed. However, the overall plot was well developed.

Thank you NetGalley and Thomas & Mercer for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Althougj this book is intriguing, I became confused. I could not discern what was happening and what the characters were up to. It is haraxter driven and one becomes invested in the protagonist. Try it. ,

Thank you to Netgalley and Marin Montgomery for my ARC of THE IMPOSTER in exchange for a review!

Sibley Sawyer has the model life- she is married and is a very successful attorney. However, the cracks in the foundation of her life start to make themselves known in more ways than one. When she gets into trouble at work, she is forced to attend rehab to get herself back on the right track, only she chooses to change up the plans a little bit and visit her estranged mother. As Sibley gets back to her stomping grounds, intent on getting back to the life she left behind, she soon realizes that her mother is a whole new person... and the town that she grew up in holds more secrets than she could ever know.

I'm always up for a psychological thriller, and never reading anything by Marin Montgomery before, I jumped at the chance to read this book in advance of it's publishing date (March 9, 2021). I gave it this rating because there was nothing about this story that kept me super interested in it, and I always chose to read something instead of this one so it took me upwards of almost a month to read. I was confused most of the book and couldn't figure out what the hell was going on, so I had to keep going back and rereading sections to try to piece it together. Both of the narrators (Deborah and Sibley) were extremely unreliable (which I know is the point!)

Overall, I thought that THE IMPOSTER was interesting, but it wasn't a favorite of mine. It features an in-depth mother daughter relationship along with several twists to keep you engaged. I would recommend this book for fans of a very slow burning psychological thriller.

Five stars for The Imposter by Marin Montgomery. First we meet Deborah, living alone on the farm where she grew up. She is widowed, estranged from her daughter, and traumatized by recent events. Deborah doesn't know if she can trust anyone, even herself. We are then introduced to Sibley. Sibley is Deborah's daughter who fled her hometown the day after graduation and has never looked back. She's a wife and an accomplished attorney but both of those roles have been put in jeopardy. Destructive habits are reignited and Sibley is forced to confront the past in order to have hopes of a future.

This book was full of suspense and twists. There were so many truly scary moments and shocking revelations I could not guess who 'The Imposter' was until it was revealed by the unexpected ending. Fans of novels like The Girl on the Train and Gone Girl will love this book!

Thank you to Marin Montgomery, Netgalley and Thomas & Mercer for an Advance Reader Copy of this book.

This book was not at all what I expected. It takes good writing for me to really hate a character and I really disliked some of the decisions that the main character made throughout. I was not expecting the final twist whatsoever, I decided someone else was up to no good. Loved the ending and how everything was wrapped up. At times the different storyline was a little confusing, but overall enjoyed it.

I enjoyed the plot and how all of the loose ends were tied up in the ending of this book. I found Sibley's parts to be more interesting than Deborah's.
The first few chapters were slow and didn't really keep my attention but it did pick up later in the story.

Marin Montgomeryโ€™s writing style is very descriptive and creative. However, I struggled with staying focused on the book throughout my reading session. The plot needed a little more โ€œoompfโ€ in terms of suspense for me.

The first few chapters of the book were not very interesting to me. I didnโ€™t really get into the story until Sibleyโ€™s chapters.

This book confused me too much to really make a connection to the characters. I also didnโ€™t like the ending. It was way too improbable for my liking.

I did like the general idea for the plot though. If the writing style was different I think I wouldโ€™ve enjoyed it more.

when @marinmont18 messaged me to read her newest thriller, I was pretty pumped! I'd given last year's ๐™๐™๐™š ๐™๐™ช๐™ž๐™ฃ๐™š๐™™ ๐™’๐™ž๐™›๐™š four stars (pre-booksta days) and enjoyed Marin's style. Well, ๐™๐™๐™š ๐™„๐™ข๐™ฅ๐™ค๐™จ๐™ฉ๐™š๐™ง did not disappoint! This book was ๐—ฐ๐—ต๐—ผ๐—ฐ๐—ธ ๐—ณ๐˜‚๐—น๐—น of secrets and deception and I was so here for it. It's another ๐ŸŒด๐ŸŒด๐ŸŒด๐ŸŒด four star read - AND! I sort of also binged two of her other thrillers via audiobook this week - ๐™๐™๐™š ๐™‹๐™š๐™ง๐™›๐™š๐™˜๐™ฉ ๐™Ž๐™ฉ๐™ง๐™–๐™ฃ๐™œ๐™š๐™ง and ๐˜ผ๐™ก๐™ก ๐™๐™๐™š ๐™‹๐™ง๐™š๐™ฉ๐™ฉ๐™ฎ ๐™‡๐™ž๐™š๐™จ. I did not finish this book and actually only got through the first few chapters. While it was well written I felt it was taking too long to get into the main plot and what I had read so far did not interest me and did not keep my attention. That being said I'm sure others would enjoy this book but it just was not for me.

Psychological thriller lovers, get this one on your radar asap!
Getting into the minds of these two main characters will throw you for loop after loop. Sibley, a cuthroat divorce attorney, begins as a functioning alcoholic but slowly descends into blackout drunk episodes where her actions cause her to be sent into rehab in order to keep her job. She doesn't quite make it there though at the advice of her well meaning friend, she returns home to face her mother after a 16 year estrangement. Her mother, Deborah is struggling living alone and taking care of a large farm by herself and has had a recent intruder on the property who attacked her. She is highly medicated and is often confused and delusional.
Combine these two characters and their flaws and you get one messy relationship with a lot of mistrust.
I loved this book. So many twists and delusions leading the reader on a trail to a nice nipped up ending. I could not put this book down and finished in two sittings. Add this to your tbr before it gets lost!

Deborah and Sibley are mother and daughter who have an estranged relationship. Deborah is living alone at the family farm and Sibley is a divorce lawyer. Sibley is an alcoholic who is sent to rehab by her husband and bosses as a last ditch attempt to sort her life out. However she feels she needs to visit her mum to find out why they are estranged and to finally get the truth about her fathers death.
As a psychological thriller this book did not grab my attention, the writing and plot is good but I felt it was a little drawn out and could have been a lot shorter.
However the ending was good and brought all the loose ends together

I truly enjoyed the story! It had me hooked right from the start and I could not put it down. The imagery in the story was very impressive and I honestly felt like I could picture everything as it was happening. Definitely recommend this one for a quick fast paced mystery!

Excellent book! I didn't want it to end. I feel like I want to know the after effects of all this on the main characters, I'm invested in them.

Great job.

Whoa seriously whoa! A book has never made me so distrustful of every single character. I had zero idea what or who to trust. I need everyone to read this book so we can discuss because whoa. One of the best mystery/thrillers Iโ€™ve read. Ever.

This book really surprised me!
You know that feeling of unease when a narrator seems unreliable? Double that feeling because both our narrators are questionable in this one!
Deborah is an aging Midwestern widow living by herself on her familyโ€™s farm when she begins to receive mysterious letters. Could they really be from her estranged daughter?
Sibley is a 30-something lawyer who has it all together after escaping her small hometown....oh, except her marriage and job are on the line and she canโ€™t seem to get through a day without liquid courage. When faced with an ultimatum, Sibley realizes itโ€™s time to face her adolescent demons and heads home intent on uncovering the truth behind her fathers death 16 years prior.
This novel is packed with suspense and twists, and it kept me up late into the night!

Special thank you to Marin Montgomery and NetGalley for providing a digital copy in exchange for an honest review.

Sibley and her estranged mother, Deborah, have a damaged relationship. Defined by the rumors of a midwestern town, Deborah has led a hard life, and a recent attack has left her constantly on-edge. Sibley, now a successful divorce attorney, returns home to her mother after years of estrangement, and is baffled at what she finds.

This novelโ€™s format was a bit confusing to me. It is set in two different โ€œthemesโ€, one being โ€œDeborahโ€ from a third person narration and the other being โ€œSibleyโ€ in a first-person narration. I thoroughly enjoyed Sibleyโ€™s parts of the story, her own turmoil with her marriage, career, and mental health. Overall, I think it was a great story, but could have ultimately been written from only Sibleyโ€™s point of view. I was confused throughout the second half of the novel. While it was definitely full of twists that I could not have predicted, I did think this book was a tad far-fetched and written in a way where I would have to go back and re-read just to keep things straight. Towards the end of the novel, I really had no idea what was going on because the โ€œstoryโ€ kept changing so rapidly. The twists were a bit too much for my liking, and the jumpy timeline and narration made me feel like I was always missing something. The story would go very fast in some instances, and then extremely slow in others.

Although I enjoyed the closure the ending gave, I am disappointed (SPOILER ALERT) that we did not get closure on Esmeralda, the pregnant cat!!

I would love to read more of Montgomeryโ€™s other works.

The Imposter is a great mystery/thriller! It started out right away getting into the whodunit. It alternates perspectives between a mother and daughter. There are not too many characters to keep track of, which I love! Once I got into it, I really started to question WHO is the crazy one here! Several little twists throughout the book, then a surprising ending!
