To be honest this book was very confusing - I could not make it to the end of the book and ended up DNF'ing it about 1/2 way through. The characters seemed to unbelievable to be real story. The synopsis intriqued me but unfortunately the book didn't live up to the hype.

The Imposter by Marin Montgomery is a psychological thriller about a reunion between an estranged mother and daughter. This was a slow read for me, but I did enjoy it. #TheImposter #NetGalley

Thank you NetGalley and Author Marin Montgomery for the ARC of this book. My review can also be seen on my Instagram @whatwouldkatread

I really enjoyed all the twists in this book. However, I did find some predictable and some a little far fetched which is why I settled at 4 stars instead of 5. I wasn't sure what to expect with this read and I definitely think it met my expectations of a good psychological thriller.

Heads up that this book does include addiction which could be a sensitive topic for some.

A little hard for me to follow, but the plot idea and characters were exciting. Psychology thrillers have been all over lately. The synopsis sounded thrilling to me, but I just could not get into this one.

It's a good thriller but I couldn't care for the characters and the story didn't keep my attention.
Not my cup of tea.
Many thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for this ARC, all opinions are mine

I stayed up half the night finishing this book, what a ride! It was a little hard to follow at times, I felt confused about a couple of the characters but was able to work through it, the ending was a surprise, I thought I had figured it out but nope!

This is my first Marin Montgomery read. I've been thirsting for something in the psychological thriller genre having exhausted all the decent legal and police procedural stuff. As for crime fiction, now I just wait for the next Connelly or Crais. No one else makes it anymore. So along comes The Imposter. Well, what a read! This is a complex and gritty novel that really takes you for a ride. All the characters are fully dimensional without a single false note. And the very unlikely story somehow jells seamlessly so that it works, works works. Highly recommended!

This one showed so much promise from its synopsis but it ended up being wayyyyy too long and slow paced. This could’ve easily been great had it been edited down by about 100 pages.

Unfortunately a DNF at 25%

Deborah and sibley are totally unlikeable. I can't feel any connection to either of them. The writing itself is well constructed but unfortunately the story isnt for me.

Including a 1 star rating for netgalley only. Not posting review to goodreads or Instagram as I feel it's unfair to author to judge a book I could not finish

This was quite a slow read from my usual thrillers with 2 unreliable characters who were unlikable too.

One twisted plot with prose that jumped timelines it was confusing too. The lawyer daughter wanted to unite with her estranged mother when her personal life imploded and both went to uncover secrets. (never a good thing, some should stay buried)

Overall a good read with the usual suspense and nasty twists.

I don't want to say too much about the plot because the less you know, the better. I thought this was a great read; the plot is cleverly constructed between two unreliable narrators so that you can never be quite sure of the truth. It is packed with twists and turns that come as genuine surprises. I found it hard to put down and definitely sacrificed some sleep!!
You get an idea of who the 'bad guys' might be it is impossible to understand their motives and the reveal at the end does not disappoint.
I would recommend this book for anyone who likes psychological thrillers with a creepy edge.
I will definitely read this author again

I do have to say, after long consideration. I gave this book a 3.5 stars because it took forever to get good and when it did it wasn't really. The writing style was ok and but got a bit confusing towards the end.

The Imposter is a wild ride for sure. It took me just a bit to get roped in but I am so glad I held out. I really enjoyed this one and can't wait to read more from the author.

The Imposter by Marin Montgomery is a twisty and confusing psychological thriller. Neither of the main characters are at all likeable and the story jumped all over the place. A divorce lawyer with a serious drinking problem and her estranged mother reunite and try to uncover the family secrets and lies.

Where are all of my unreliable narrator lovers at? This book gives us not 1, but 2 unreliable narrators, that at times make you question your own sanity! I really enjoyed this slow burn thriller. The creepy Midwest farm setting was perfect for the storyline. The flashbacks from past to present kept me invested & interested to discover the truth! While I guessed a portion of the ending, it still unfolded in a way I never would have guessed, so kudos to Marin for tricking me when I thought I had it all figured out! 👏🏼

What a book full of twists and turns!
This is a slow book and the characters are just NOPE. Maybe I just have too high expectations about this.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the chance of getting eARC!

From the outside looking in, Sibley Sawyer has a perfect life. As a successful attorney, she’s worked hard to get to the top of her game—but when her personal and professional lives implode, Sibley looks for a way to turn the page.

Unable to shake the tragic circumstances that caused her to flee her rural Midwestern hometown, Sibley wants nothing more than to reunite with her estranged mother, Deborah, and bury their past tensions.

But as she reenters the life she left behind, she realizes her mother isn’t the same person she remembers, and she’s not the same daughter either.

As both women struggle to piece together a tangled web of deceit and lies, and the shocking circumstances that caused Sibley to leave in the first place, it becomes clear there are secrets rooted deeper than either mother or daughter could ever have imagined.

Can you really deceive your past and those around you?

I DNF’d this at 30%.

Within the opening chapters I was confused, so confused. The plot line is jumpy and the relevant tangents never met. I didn’t particularly like the characters at all.

When the Sibley section started it was like reading a different author. There was no continuity between the two perspectives and there was a lot of unnecessary descriptions that got in the way of the story. Unfortunately this one wasn’t for me.

Great, fast-paced read, with a twist that I thought I saw coming, but I did not at all. Also, a great ending that wraps it all up very nicely. I really enjoyed this one and felt like I could not stop reading until I got to the end.

The Imposter is a Psychological Thriller that takes you on a twisted path with many unreliable characters.

This book was filled with so many twists and turns it’s hard to keep track of everything. I enjoy a book with an unreliable narrator but this one was doing way to much. It felt like way to many ideas crammed into one story. I’m still not entirely sure if this book wants to be a thriller or a ghost story in parts. Maybe both.

Overall I didn’t really enjoy this one. The ending was unexpected and I really enjoyed that. But the chapters filled with incoherent thoughts became so distracting from the story line. Maybe that was the author intention I’m not sure. This book just wasn’t for me. I would suggest this book to people who love psychological thrillers and many unreliable characters at once.
2/5 Stars
