Let me start by saying, I love sourdough! I have 2 starters going myself. One, I started myself in March 2020 with fresh ground whole wheat flour and the other is from a starter dating back to the 1800s. I love and use both regularly so I was looking forward to reading this book. Overall, the book is fine though it's a little too philosophical for my taste. I was hoping for more recipes sprinkled in but we essentially get one.
Thank you to Tiller Press and NetGalley for the eARC in exchange for my honest review.
I was looking forward to this book since I have started baking sourdough over the past year, but it unfortunately fell flat for me. The first 75% was very philosophical and kind of rambled - I understood that the author was trying to tie "life lessons" in to sourdough starter, but I felt like it jumped around too much. The last 75% has baking info with recipes for starter and bread, entirely using rye flour.
I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
This book offers an interesting range of observations on life through the prism of life with sourdough starter. It was an interesting read given my experience with starter over this year.
During this pandemic and life changes this year, I made a sourdough starter and bread and didn't keep up with it very long. The title caught my attention, and reading through this book with the funny quips about bread and life in general, I felt connected with the author. Her comments make you laugh and think at the same time, as well as inspired me to try making and keeping a sourdough going again. Thank you for the preview read, and this review is voluntary.
Though a very different type of bread book, this one may be one that many enjoy. Not really my kind of book making bread, however, it is excellent on the making and using of sourdough. If you want something out of the ordinary but still informative in the sourdough area, then this is a book you will enjoy and use!! I am used to more conventional cookbooks with more instruction and pictures.
I adore sourdough, the time and effort it takes to make. We have recently begun making our own. Stoletzky does a great job exploring life lessons in relation to the creation of sourdough. I absolutely loved the photos! This was great and I can’t wait to purchase a copy!
This is an incredibly zen book about making sourdough bread. It provides one recipe and many deep thoughts connecting sourdough bread and life. It's hard to know who the target audience is, but some people will love it.
Thank you to the publisher and Netgalley for the opportunity to read and review this book. I love that this book comes on the precipice of the covid-19 virus when it seemed like everyone was making and/or learning how to make bread and sourdough. I have to say I enjoyed this book more than I thought I would. Definitely recommend.
I thought I would just be reading a few facts about making bread. This read is so much more! It made me visually see myself making bread. The book gives excellent tips about life and break making. It's pretty special for me to be able to remember it.
What a wonderful little book! I really enjoyed reading this and it may have even inspired me to start my own sourdough starter. This was beautifully written and surprisingly funny. I actually laughed out loud a few times. I loved this! Just a beautiful ode to baking and bread. You should read it as an escape from the madness of 2020 :)
