I didn’t realize when I requested this that it was a sample and I don’t care for samples so I waited until I could read the whole book. I have to say I was disappointed. The first 2 were both 5 star reads for me and this one was fine, but nothing compared to its predecessors. Basically the entire book was just hours of everyone squabbling. I thought with all that tension it would at least build up to a big grand finale, but after all that, the ending was incredibly anticlimactic.
Thank you NetGalley, author, and publisher for the sample in exchange for an honest review.
Thank you for giving me the opportunity to read an ARC of this book!
I really loved A Curse So Dark and Lonely, and I liked A Heart So Fierce and Broken well enough. However, A Vow So Bold and Deadly just didn't work as well for me. I loved Harper and Rhen in the first book, so I was excited to have their perspectives again, but I felt like having all four perspectives was a bit too much for this book. The main issue with the book, though, is the utter lack of plot. The whole book is seemingly about the war that is imminent between Emberfall and Syhl Shallow, and yet everyone just spends a lot of time talking about that war without anything really happening, and then it all ties up nicely. I also really don't like Lia Mara's character, and I especially didn't like her in this book. Now that she is queen of Syhl Shallow, I had hoped that she would be a little less self-effacing and whiny, but no. She constantly goes on about how she needs to be nice and not violent like her mother was, but really she is just a very nothing character. I really wanted to like this book, but unfortunately it didn't work for me. If you love the series, it's probably still worth reading so you can see how it wraps up, but prepare for some disappointment.
Loved it! Can't wait to start this one in our library's virtual bookclub for the teens. The other two were a big hit as well.
A Vow So Bold and Deadly by Brigid Kemmerer at the top of my list of most anticipated reads for 2021, and I was so very excited to finally get my hands on the book! I have really enjoyed the series since it was first released in 2019, and while I’m not at all ready for the series to come to an end, I am very curious to see how it will do so.
If you’ve been around my blog a while, or if you follow me on Instagram, then you probably know how much I LOVE A Curse So Dark and Lonely. Not only because it’s such a unique, addictive read, but also because it’s a Beauty and the Beast retelling, which I LOVE. (Seriously, can I get more retellings like this in the future, please?!) I thought the sequel, A Heart So Fierce and Broken was fantastic as well, and after the MAJOR cliffhanger ending in it, I couldn’t wait to get my hands on this final book.
(It was a LONG wait… but it was also SO worth it.)
While I wanted to absolutely devour this book after I finally got my hands on it, I chose to read it slowly instead, because, as I said above, I really, really didn’t want the story to end. This was actually hard to do because the story was SO good, and things kept happening, and I just wanted to devour the book as quickly as I could. Once I hit the halfway mark, I was a goner, and read the last half of the book in one sitting. And I enjoyed every minute of it.
I had no idea what to expect going into this book. The first and second books went in completely different directions than expected them to, and so I had no idea what would happen in this third book. The storyline picks up not long after where A Heart So Fierce and Broken ends and quickly goes from there. We get multiple viewpoints throughout the book, as we did in the previous books, and it was so nice to get in these characters' heads again. We learn so much new info! This series has so many great characters, and I love them all so much, and want to know so much more about them!
The first half of the book is a little slow, but once you hit the halfway mark, things really start to heat up. I’m pretty happy with the way things ended in this book… though… While it feels like some things came together rather nicely, it also felt like some things were left open – either to be left to our interpretation or for something else, I have no idea. I definitely feel like there could be more to this story in the future, and if Brigid wants to add to this series, or make a spin-off, I would SO be down for that. Give me all the books!
Overall; I thought A Vow So Bold and Deadly was the perfect end to this wonderful series. I wasn’t at all ready for it to end, and I am hoping beyond hope that we get more books in this series down the road, or maybe a spin-off series, because I’m so not ready to say goodbye to these characters. If you’ve read and loved the other books in this series, do check out this conclusion with A Vow So Bold and Deadly! If you’ve not yet started this fantastic series… well… what are you waiting for??
Happy Reading!
This is one is my favorite of The series, I really struggled with Harper through, she was getting on my nerves on the first chapters but she improves at the end. I liked Grey better on the other two books and Lía Mara is still my favorite. This is finally Rhen's book, The writing was entertaining and reads very fast
This sample was good. I really like how we are getting all four POVs finally in one book. The first three chapters are in order but Lia Mara's chapter is actually the ninth one. I liked the first book and was a bit annoyed a times by the second but I am really interested in how it all comes together in the end.
ACSDAL was one of my favorite reads in 2109 and I am looking forward to reading the finished copy of the last installment.
Great first pages of the last book from the Cursebreakers series, I'm so gonna miss theses characters and the drama! Gotta read the rest now!!!
I've just finished the whole trilogy and these books were the cause of many late nights! Brigid Kemmerer is my new favourite author and all three titles in this series are among the most exciting, intriguing, atmospheric and empowering books I've ever read. I've been recommending the cursebreakers trilogy to all the readers I know. Absolutely amazing - I would give this 100 stars if I could!
An absolutely beautiful story and wrap up to a trilogy that will stick with me for life. I adored the characters and how they grew apart as well as together.
I loved this series but by the end was mostly in it just for Grey, this book didn’t disappoint. If you read and loves the others this is a must read!
A wonderful ending to a great series. I love this whole series and was highly anticipating the ending. It did not disappoint. It was such a great conclusion to the story and wrapped up in a way that was satisfying and yet saddening that it was all over. My favorite part of this series is the characters especially the female ones. I am a huge fan of how badass both Lia Mara and Harper are. They both stand up for themselves and dont let anything hold them back. They are exactly what I want to see of heroines in my fantasy series.
I had no idea this was a sampler. Apparently I missed that when I requested the book. I do enjoy this series and look forward to buying the book to read the whole book. Everything I've read make me look forward to reading more.
Holy epic conclusion to an already action-packed, heart-racing, emotional thrill ride of a series!!! Brigid Kemmerer set the bar high with each new installment of the Cursebreaker Trilogy, and honestly, I wasn't prepared for the final book.
I mean, I knew it was coming, and I was praying to all the gods that it would be just as good as the first two, but each and every hope and expectation I had for A Vow So Bold and Deadly was not only met, it was surpassed. Color this reader surprised because when you've read as many books as I have, you learn that not every book is going to wrap up the way you want it to according to your individual reader tastes etc... but AVSBAD floored me, and honestly, this is a trilogy I'll come back to over and over again.
Emberfall is an incredibly rich world, that basically turns everything you'd expect to see in a sort of fairytale retelling upside down. As someone who's incredibly picky with their retellings, it took me a while to pick up this trilogy, but once I did, I couldn't put it down. Kemmerer has an incredible talent for keeping the themes of the original tale while making them her own at the same time. I can't wait to see what she writes next!
A beautiful ending to a fantastic series! I only wish there was more Rhen and Harper as well as a bit more to the story but dont we all with series we love!
A lovely conclusion to a very intriguing and new take on a retelling. My only negative thought would be that this series isn't longer.
Though this book was beautifully written, I did which for some characters to have a different end game in all of this, I thought they deserved different, better even.
Nonetheless, great read, highly recommend it.
So, this series holds a very special place in my heart and it might be the only Young Adult series that I inhale in three days tops. I was such a big fan of this series that I actually called four of my local Barnes and Nobel to see if their shipment had come in so that I could go pick it up on the 26th so that I can review the whole book instead of just the excerpt provided by NetGalley. Sadly, I was not able to get my hands on a physical copy but now own an ebook audiobook and a physical book. I also went ahead and bought books one and two in paperback so I could have the series considering I will for sure read this series again. I love all the characters. Harper, Rhen, Grey, and Lia Mara are all back in an installment that will leave you breathless. If you read A Heart so Fierce and Broken then you know Grey is the rightful heir to Emberfall. The book is told from 4 points of view of the four major players in the second book. What I loved is how all four of these characters are beautifully flawed yet motivated by duty, honor, and the fear of the unknown to do the right thing. The chapters that intertwine with Harper and Rhen are devastating not only is Rhen dealing with the betrayal of his brother but the wicked sorcerous Lilith reappears in this book and as wicked as she is I really would have been said if there wasn’t a Lilith appearance. I will say that this is the only book in this series that is getting a 4-star rating. Why you might ask? Well, let me explain. While all the loose ends are tied up and we got a semi- satisfying ending I felt like there was more story to be told. Is there a book four that is the only question I have left? Now I will be happily waiting for Defy the Night that comes out in September of this year.
To be fair I didn't know that this was just a sampler when I requested it. That said, I feel like the sequels weren't as compelling as the first installment (A Curse So Dark and Lonely) though I have also moved away from reading young adult. I feel as though Harper's character changed drastically from the first novel and not in a forward development. I was just wanting more.
A good finale to a strong series.
I liked that we got four different POVs: Grey, Rhen, Harper, and Mara, which allowed us to follow all four main characters. The plot was a slow burn and the writing style remained the same throughout the trilogy. I was satisfied with how we leave the characters.
Omgosh!! I am in LOVE with this series by Brigid Kemmerer! Grey is the man and I cannot wait to get back into this world and finish it off.
There is going to be conflict and love lost and gained and battles with magic! What more could you ask for.
Thank You NetGalley for giving me the opportunity to get this early excerpt to read. It was amazing!
