Thank you Bloomsbury for the sample chapters!
This is book three of the Cursebreaker series by Brigid Kemmerer. I was so excited to read this excerpt of the fairytale retelling! I had to preorder the book immediately and wait impatiently to get my copy so I could read the whole thing! The excerpt really hooked me and I had to know what happened with Rhen! I have loved this series soooo much and can’t wait to see what else Brigid comes up with next. 3 stars for the excerpt bc this is a review site and if you want our best opinions you have to give us more than a couple chapters. 5 stars for the whole book!
This was a sample of some chapters and I’m dying for read the entire book. The previous book have a cliffhanger that omg I need to know more about this world. This few chapters gave me a little bit of hints about what’s going to happen.
Very engaging end to a series I absolutely loved! Very sad to see it end, however, it was time. I'm really glad that the couples stayed together.
I LOVE THIS SERIES!
As someone who wouldn’t call themselves a fantasy reader, this series is one of the only ones I’ve ever completed.
It’s such a gripping story, full of Intrigue, interest and has full on page turning quality.
I’d recommend this series to anyone who is looking for disability rap, or wanting to dive into the fantasy genre for the first time because it is so accessible.
In terms of this being the third book in the series, it did its job well, and without revealing any spoilers I was very satisfied with the ending.
Loved this so much! Can't wait to dive into the entire book!! This series so, so good! And I hear there's yet another installment!!
If we were only rating the last few chapters, then I would immediately be giving it five stars, but it's the whole book, so four.
Harper + Rhen vs Lia Mara + Grey is just SO interesting! I can't help but compare and contrast them and Harper and Rhen have issues because they can't trust each other while Emberfall is in turmoil, but Lia Mara and Gray? Omg, I LOVE them SO much!! I mean I loved them both in the second book as soon as I set my eyes on them, before they even set eyes on each other, but they grow so much TOGETHER in a world that's so set against them. *Wipes tears*
And Tycho is awesome. And Iisak. And I love the bromance between Grey and Jake. And everyone teasing Grey, the guy who was once dubbed "Scary Grey". And Noah's knowing smile at the end...
The book ended slightly differently than what I thought, but whatever, I guess. Idek.
Thank you Netgalley for providing the first few chapters to review. I loved it so much I had to buy a physical copy.
This was the absolute best conclusion I could have asked for. I felt like the first and second book has entirely different moods, but this really brought it all together. Honestly, it made me appreciate the second book that much more. I'm so so glad I held out hope for this series despite not being wild about A Heart So Fierce and Broken. I definitely think this is one of those series I will re-read and maybe even enjoy more the second time around.
Fantastic third instalment. I loved the marrying of the 2 stories from the previous 2 books, I was very happy with the ending.
This excerpt brings back what I liked about the original book: the magic, the curses, the fantasy-style royalty. Rhen and Harper are back, the original duo that we cared so much about in the first book, and those who fell for Grey's more recalcitrant narrative will be pleased to see it continue. I'm still leery of Lia Mara's character; she felt like much of an outcast in A Heart So Fierce and Broken and it looks like she'll be struggling with the same issues in this book as well.
This is going to pain me to write this but I feel kind of let down by this book.
I had such high hopes and it was one of my most anticipated reads of 2021 but I feel there are just too many loose ends that should have been tied up. I am not a reader who likes an ending where we are supposed to "use our imagination". I want all the answers and no loose ends thank you very much.
I read this book in a day and was so hyped but slowly I have started to see the flaws.
Nothing really happened for a long time in the book and then suddenly everything happened all at once?! I hated Rhen in book 2 but by the end of this, you know what, he deserved better! Grey seemed to turn into a bit of an ass, Lia Mara was DULL, Harper was the only one who I didn't have as much of an issue with.
BEWARE SPOILERS AHEAD!!!!!!!
Ok what was with that ending? Someone correct me but I was sure that this was supposed to be a series but then suddenly was changed to a trilogy? That is the only reasoning I can find behind all the loose ends and pointlessness that was being introduced to Nakiis, only for him to fly off?
The pregnancy was pretty predictable, and why all of a sudden does Grey want to be king when he wanted nothing to do with it for so long?
I really want to see Grey as a father, I want to know what's happening with these anti magic folks, I want to know what's happening with Nolla Verin, because you know what, I don't trust her.
I want to know what happens to Rhen and Harper. He is such a lost soul by the end of this book, he's been trained his whole life to be King and now what? Nothing. And then Grey is JOKING to him about it all! I'm sorry but that was not cool.
All in all, there are just too many unanswered questions. The characters felt like they changed completely from how they were in book 1, and I get it characters grow but this was more than that.
I'm really hoping we get some spin offs to fill in the blanks because my brain can't cope with that ending.
A solid conclusion to the series. The ending was not as strong as the first book, but definitely takes care of all the loose ends and wraps up the story nicely for fans.
Synopsis
In the final book in the series, Rhen shares with Harper the fact that Lilith didn't fall into her world. She came back and uses Harper as leverage to control Rhen. They decide to fight her back, however, it doesn't end well for them and the people living in the castle. With last breath, Harper escapes Lilith and travels to meet Grey and Lia Mara, who's currently preparing for a war with their kingdom. Despite what happened between Grey and Rhen he's the only want she can ask for help to fight Lilith and rescue the prince. However, the pain the prince caused isn't forgotten, and this task will not be as easy as she thought.
Review
The final book in A Curse So Dark and Lonely series. I was waiting for so long to read this book! I loved two first books, so I was sure I will enjoy one as well. I wasn't wrong. This book wasn't as good as the first two and I was pretty disappointed that Lilith comes back, and the story is built around her but it turned out to be better than I expected.
After all that happened, the relationship between Rhen and Harper got more and more intense. They stopped trusting each other, and together with this trust they also lost a lot of support from people. A lot of people stopped considering Rhen as a crown prince and despite the fight for his rights he also had to fight Lilith on his own. Throughout this book, we can see how despaired and depressed he gets. He losses control over his life once again and feels even more powerless against Lilith. As much as I started to dislike his character I also felt bad for him knowing that he does what he does out of fear for Harper and his people.
Harper on the other side starts to see the flaws in Rhen, which she didn't want to face before. Especially, the fact that he was keeping secrets from her about who's hunting him. Even if he hurt her, she still stays at his side and tries to help him. Even after all this happened, she is still risking her life to find help for him. I'm very curious how she will be welcomed by Grey and Lia Mara. After all, she chose Rhen's side in this war. Rhen hurt Grey more than ever so I'm wondering if he still has some sympathy left for him in his heart left. I cannot wait to finish reading this book soon when it's released! I'm sure we will get an epic ending as in the previous books!
I would like to thank NetGalley, Brigid Kemmerer, and Bloomsbury YA for providing me with a copy of this ARC copy! I cannot wait to buy and finish reading this amazing story!
the excerpt of this book really gets u caught. from the beginning of this trilogy, the author know how to get you caught. I’ve already book the physical copy because i need to know how Grey’s story ends
The sample chapters offer a good start to the book, however I did find it to be slow paced, yet exciting to see where the story goes from here on.
I was finally able to read this and OMG it almost killed me! But such a great ending!
This really focused on Rhen and Emberfall which could not have made me happier!
A great conclusion but I can definitely see more coming based on other characters? Perhaps? Maybe?
I hate when the last of a series lets me down. I often find myself pretending the whole book or certain parts didn't happen just to help me be less frustrated.. Thankfully, the actual plot of this one didn't frustrate me and I was happy with the conclusion. I was just frustrated by the pacing and how long it took to get there
I really love this trilogy especially Grey's character and this sample was so intriguing I couldn't help but devour the book as soon as it came out.
While this book would be amazing as a stand-alone, as the final installment in the Cursebreakers trilogy it was a bit of a let down. There were more questions than answers at the end of this. The first half seemed slow building. The four main characters story converges finally around the center point. The action picked up and it does feel a bit more like the series I have come to love at this point. Though I feel like two of my favorite characters did not get the ending they deserved, I am still satisfied. I do hope we will get to see the characters, even just a glimpse, later.
I love this series so much and this was such a good wrap up. I can't wait to recommend this one for fantasy lovers and teen readers and I hope they have as much fun as I did.
I initially wanted to post my feedback after reading the entire book, as NetGalley only provided a sampler of the first 4 chapters. But I haven’t gotten around to that yet so I’m going to review the sampler chapters only.
I really liked book 1 in this series and I was drawn to it for the disability representation. Book 2 focused more on Grey and the new Lia Mara character, which I didn’t feel too strongly about either way. Based on what I’ve seen of book 3, however, I’m disappointed with the direction Kemmerer has taken with the series. I see that other reviewers take issue with the change from two narrative POVs (in book 2) to four POVs in this book; I agree that this raises some major problems, on the one hand having to do with character development and continuity, but above all in terms of the pacing. By the end of chapter 4 we’ve barely covered any narrative ground, and honestly I feel like we’re going backwards (why, for instance, did the author need to “invent” the new plot point of Grey facing misandry?? Aren’t there enough actual problems facing the crew already?). And Lia Mara, for her part, seems to have regressed in terms of her competence and confidence as a ruler. It makes me doubt that the series can be wrapped up satisfactorily by the book’s end.
Lastly, I’m just kind of sad to see Harper lose a lot of her “screen time” to the extremely able-bodied Lia Mara, and to see a lack of other disabled characters in what was initially a very promising series.
