The third book in JM Alvey’s series on Philocles is another resounding success.

Alvey’s description of ancient Athens is astounding. The author creates such a plausible and believable society, set in a world so vivid that it feels as if you are there, even though its 2500 years old.

In this book, we find playwright Philocles drawn into another murder investigation, this one centred around epic poets due to perform The Illiad.

Yet again, the story is infections and fast paced, there is an enjoyable subtle wit to the prose, with characters who are enjoyable to read.

I’d love there to be more of these, they really are quite good!

Philocles hs been commissioned by Aristarchus, his patron, to find out who is killing poets who are commissioned to declaim poetry at the Panathenaia. Justice for Athena by JM Alvey is the third Philocles mystery set in ancient Greece. A great historical mystery that shows how justice in classical Athens functioned after a murder. Interesting outlook on how women were treated at the time. Read and figure out whodunit.

This is an very good addition to this excellent series.
The characters are fleshed and well written as usual, the historical background is well researched and vivid.
The solid mystery is full of twists and turns and kept me guessing.
It's gripping and highly entertaining.

Another Philocles mystery this time in Athens. Entertainers are coming to Athens for competitions. The greatest of these is the Poets who perform Homer’s Iliad they are known for their deep red cloaks. Who would want to kill a poet Philocles has an impossible task to connect the brutal deaths. What is the reason it seems a spiders web to untangle. It will even come to affect Philocles own relationship. A mystery difficult to follow if you have not come to know the characters from previous books. It is well worth persevering for an engrossing story.

I did not know that this was the sixth book in this series when I requested the book. Anthea Force are chosen for their talents and then trained to be the best that they can be. That bit I understood but most of the book confused me. I did think on a couple of occasions of just giving up on the book, but i perciviered. I don't think it was all to do with the book. I think you have to have read the rest of the books in order to understand this book.

Festival Time In Athens....
The third Philocles book in this series of historic mysteries. Amidst festival time in Athens a murderer lurks. Once again, reluctant detective Philocles is on the case. The search for a killer begins. A solid mystery with an excellent sense of place, well plotted with a likeable and intriguing protagonist and a colourful cast of supporting characters. An engaging read.

JM Alvey has done it again, I had waited what seems like an eternity for the next entry into the Philocles series and this most definitely did not disappoint!

Fantastically written, highly engrossing and a mystery that will keep you guessing until the very end. Don't start this book close to bed time as you'll find yourself staying up way too late because you just have to know what happens on the next page.
