I received a free copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
Bloody BRILLIANT. But thats not really a surprise at this point is it? Angela Marsons books are just the best. The characters are still developing and I love seeing how they grow. The story is gripping from page one as always.
More please.
Another stonker of an instalment in the series. I simply cannot get enough. The storylines are packed with a punch each and every time and I love the characters a little more after every book. .
There is something I want for Kim and I hope that Angela Marsons gives it some consideration. It’s about time, surely?! I also never want Kim and Bryant to part ways, ever! Please make that so, too.
Cannot wait for the next one. Bring it on.
"...even though there are two types of killer, there does remain one single commonality. They will carry on until they are stopped."
A serial killer is taking lives at a rapid rate but reaches out to DI Kim Stone begging for her help to stop. The victims are found with broken necks and the crimes seem random and senseless. Kim and her team are very busy trying to solve this complex case. NO SPOILERS.
I have to say that I am growing weary of this series and with the main character. I used to think of Kim Stone as being an eccentric loner, but honestly, her personality borders on psychopathology. Her complete disregard for orders, following her "gut" instinct, the way she treats her colleagues and others -- all lead me to dislike her more with each installment. The story line here was not as compelling as usual and, though I read it in a single sitting, it wasn't intense or particularly gripping. I am sure most of Marsons' fans will disagree and will eagerly snap this one up and give it heaps of praise. No doubt it's just me requiring more stimulating fare. I do like that readers are given more glimpses into the lives of Kim's team and I did enjoy that aspect of this book. Perhaps this thirteenth in the series is just a one-off disappointment and I do plan to continue reading hoping that Kim Stone has a personality adjustment.
Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture for this e-book ARC to read and review.
Well once again Angela Marsons had me glue to my kindle like my life depended on it!
I love how with all of the police characters in each book, you learn more and more about them and all the events and their personal lives keep me intrigued and I want to know more about them.
This story line had so many twists and turns I thought I knew whodunit but then once again Angela shocks me with a curveball. 100% recommendation this book.
Thank you for the opportunity to read an advanced copy by Netgalley and bookouture in return for my honest review.
I don't think there is a single Kim Stone book that I haven't liked, and this one was no different.
Kim and her team have their work cut out for them with the strange cases of young women who are killed. There has to be some reason why this is happening but it takes the combined expertise of a wide variety of people to solve this case.
Kim is her usual gruff, kick-ass self, which is what I like about her. She is dedicated to her job and is no pushover but she loves her team and tries hard to give them all support.
There is a lot of tension as the case builds up and they figure out who has been killing these young women; as usual, I can never pick it!
5 stars from me.
Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture.
Book 13 in the DI Kim Stone series and I can truly say that this series just keeps on getting better. Can you honestly believe that we are now on the 13th book and I don’t want this series to finish, Yet again Angela has written a gripping and at times heart stopping crime thriller. What I love about this series is I can never figure out who the culprit is until almost at the end of the book so good is the author with her red herrings. A fantastic story and so good to be back with DI Stone and her team. 5🌟
Deadly Cry is the 13th book in the Detective Kim Stone Crime Thriller series. I am blown away by how this series never gets dull it simply gets better and better each one I read. I honestly dont know how the author does it. When I struggle to find the words for each review. 13 books and 13 reviews….What can I say other than Angela is one very talented author.
Those of you that know me know that I am from the Black Country. The heart of where this series is set. Each place we visit I know which makes it even more exciting and easy to visualise. For anyone that doesn’t know the area, Angela’s descriptions are spot on and I love how a little bit of history is added into the mix.
Not forgetting another excellent plot that will keep you totally engrossed from start to finish. With plenty of twists and turns that are woven in with character development. Which is outstanding, I am loving how we get to know them more with each book. I bloody love Kim Stone and Stacey, if you didn’t already know.
This is a series to good not to miss! and now I am left waiting for next book. Did I mention that I love, love, love this book and cannot recommend it enough.
Thank you to Kim Nash at Bookouture for a copy and for inviting me to take part on this tour.
DEADLY CRY is the 13th book in the D.I. Kim Stone crime-thriller series by best-selling author Angela Marsons. Angela Marsons remains one of my favorite mystery authors, and her publisher, Bookouture, always publishes the very best novels. I have read all of her books…and she keeps getting better. I don’t want this series to end!
You have to stop me from hurting anyone else. I don’t want to do these horrible things. Help me before I’m forced to do it again. And I will do it again because I have no choice. I’ve never had a choice.
In a busy shopping centre, a little girl clutches a teddy bear, clinging to it in the absence of her mother, Katrina. Hours later, Katrina’s body is discovered in an abandoned building. For Detective Kim Stone, it looks like a quick, functional murder. But Kim’s instincts tell her there’s more to this senseless murder than meets the eye. What was the motive for killing a young mother out shopping with her child?
Then a few days later, a second victim is found in a local park, her neck broken just like Katrina’s and her six-year-old son, Archie is missing.
Kim’s four team members consist of Bryant, Stacey, Penn and Tiff, a new character. But with her colleague, Detective Stacey Wood, working on another unsolved crime and planning her upcoming wedding and Penn grieving the loss of his mother to cancer, Kim is struggling to make inroads on what is fast becoming a complex case. Meanwhile, Stacey and Penn are assigned to work on cold-case files. When a handwritten letter from the killer lands on Kim’s desk addressed to her, and pleading for help, she knows time is running out to bring the little boy home alive.
Kim gets help from Alison Lowe, a handwriting analyst and behaviorist profiler, who has assisted Kim in the past. Now when Kim and the team begin to get inside the mind of the killer, they make a shocking discovery.
Some of the victims have scratch marks on their wrists. What does this mean? Are they random scratches, or is the killer is using them to communicate with someone?
Time is running out…and it is all a game!
If you haven’t read this series, get cracking and get into it! You will not regret it, and will keep coming back for more! Highly recommended!
Many thanks to the author and Bookouture via Net Galley for my digital copy.
Good characters and fast moving and evolving plot keep this book interesting. Great catching up with Kim Stone and her colleagues. Lots of twists.
Another superb story from Angela Marsons. Kim Stone and her team are really up against it this time. There is an evil mind at work but they are no match for Stone.
Well written and entertaining mystery. Good plot and character development. Mystery fans will love this book. I received an advance ebook from the publisher and Netgalley and this is my unbiased review.
For those who read this and think they have worked it out from the start think on, their are more red herrings in this than ever noted before
What starts out as a simple shopping trip ends when the mother is missing, the child found crying and several hours later the mothers broken body located, just before DI Kim Stone has chance to breathe another mother is missing but this time so is her young child
A race ensues to locate the child and find the killer and try and understand the reasons behind the actions , another highly charged read and looking forward to more
A deliciously addictive series that is masterfully written ! Unputdownable ! I highly recommend ! Thanks to Netgalley and Bookouture for the opportunity to read and review this book ! Opinions are solely my own ! #Netgalley #Bookouture #DeadlyCry
Deadly Cry - Angela Marsons
"You have to stop me from hurting anyone else. I don’t want to do these horrible things. Help me before I’m forced to do it again. And I will do it again because I have no choice. I’ve never had a choice."
I was super excited to be approved the e-copy arc for this book as I love this series, and I can't believe that we are on the 13th installment already! (please note that you do not need to read these in any particular order) These books are so easy to read, I love the short snappy chapters that just keep you wanting more. You always know you are going to get great character building and a fab plot line, and I am already looking forward to the next one.
Many thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture for allowing me the opportunity to read and review this book!
Thanks to Netgalley for an advanced readers copy. I have been a die hard Marsons fan, and will continue to be. However, this was not my favorite of the series. I think the subplot was lacking for me, but the writing is as good as ever. Looking forward to next book in this series!
This is the first book I have read in the “D.I. Kim Stone” series and it is the 13th one! The series might be titled after the team leader Kim Stone, but Angela Marsons has created a dynamic cast of characters to support Stone. Deadly Cry is a diverse mystery fiction novel which starts with the team slightly occupied by other things than murder.
Penn, a Nigerian, is still emotionally recovering from his mother’s death and now having the sole responsibility of taking care of his autistic brother. Stacey, a Black lesbian, is planning her wedding which takes place in less than a month. Someone who the team has worked with before is still dealing with PTSD. Plus the higher ups have been talking to Stone about a possible promotion that she isn’t certain that she wants.
This is when Marsons throws in the first mystery and then a murder. Oh...I should probably say that it starts on page 2...the mystery. Marsons waste no time before you are hooked on the possibilities. Then another murder happens. Do not let the number of chapters scare you because Deadly Cry moves quickly.
I did not guess the culprit, but I did figure out one of the key plot points before the team. I was screaming at the book - in my head (laugh). I have to be honest though I figured it out due to a “shuffle” (hint).
D.I. Kim Stone will be a frequent visitor to Phoebe’s Randoms as I plan on starting at the beginning. The cast created by Angela Marsons is a winner and I cannot wait to see more.
I received an ARC of this book and I am writing a review without prejudice and voluntarily.
I started it yesterday morning and I only stopped because I had to eat/other physical needs.
It's gripping and I loved it.
Great character development, tightly knitted and fast paced plot, a solid mystery that kept me guessing.
The solution came as a surprise and I liked it.
I appreciated the tenderness toward the victims, all of them.
It's strongly recommended.
Many thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for this ARC, all opinions are mine
My thanks to Bookouture for an eARC via NetGalley of ‘Deadly Cry’ by Angela Marsons in exchange for an honest review.
This is Book 13 in her popular D.I. Kim Stone series of police procedurals set in the West Midlands. I did read a couple of these fast paced police procedurals in 2019, though they were out of order. Still, it wasn’t difficult to pick up on who’s who in D.I. Stone’s world, even if some of the subtleties of the interpersonal relationships were a little lost on me.
‘Deadly Cry’ opens with an upset little girl clutching a teddy bear in the middle of a busy shopping centre. There is no sign of her mother, Katrina Nock. Hours later, Katrina’s body is discovered in an abandoned building.
It looks to D.I. Kim Stone like a quick, functional murder but what motive could there be for killing a young mother out shopping with her child? A few days later a second victim is found in a local park, her neck broken in the same way as Katrina’s. Yet in this case her six-year-old son is missing.
Then a letter arrives at the police department, apparently from the killer, imploring “You have to stop me from hurting anyone else”. It quickly becomes a complex case.
The chapters are short and move quickly between various aspects of the investigation. This book proved almost impossible to put down. In addition, there were some fascinating twists along the way.
Angela Marsons writes very solid police procedurals that tick all my boxes. I hope to catch up on more of her earlier titles while patiently awaiting the next in this excellent series.
Book thirteen and the adrenaline is still there. And not just that. Everything is here, and Angela Marsons peppers her familiar police procedural with new spices that make this one a worthy new addition to the series!
“She had no bias towards or against anyone and was generally rude to everyone.”
If you haven’t met DI Kim Stone, here’s a quote that is both true and yet… I couldn’t not highlight it. I chuckled and immediately relaxed. Yes, I was in the expert hands of Angela Marsons.
Few crime fiction novels have a team I adore. Literally. Every member of the team means something to me, and the author clearly feels the same, you can feel it in the care with which she writes them, writes about them, and makes room for their growth. You can imagine that after twelve books, a lot has happened, and I feel so close to Stacey, Penn, Bryant… that I can honestly say the plot comes second. I can’t thank the author enough for having given me a police family.
Okay, I may have said the plot came second, but don’t think they’re not as good as the characterization Angela Marsons masters. Her plots are reliable. Scarily so. She often intertwines cases and in Deadly Cry, several paths cross. The links are never ever clear, and sometimes there isn’t one. But sometimes there is. Ha, I am being so vague! But that’s the beauty of each investigation in the Kim Stone series. A member of the team can take up a case on the side, or they can be juggling a double investigation, and you get the legwork and its effects, the realism descending on the protagonists and strengthening the tension. Deadly Cry is clever, and the heart of the case is tricky. I was in the dark for most of the book, and I loved it. Yes, me, the control freak, leaving the reins to Kim and the team!
House searches, crime scenes, coffee breaks, and my favorite bit: humor. Cheeky lines, fun observations, a bit of banter, a lot of heart.
Once again, the series explores the darkness in our world and our souls without ever forgetting the light.

Deadly Cry is my sixth Angela Marsons novel and I couldn't put it down.
The author continues her fabulous West Midlands based series with this intriguing instalment. Kim is attending a meeting as ordered by her superior, DCI "Woody" Woodward. She takes a call about the discovery of a mother's dead body, whose young daughter, Mia is on her own in a shopping centre. 25-year-old Katrina Nock's neck has been broken, her body found in an abandoned building. It looks like a relatively straightforward case, but Kim instinctively knows it will be more taxing and so begins a challenging and arduous investigation for Kim and her team.
This is a well-plotted mystery of excellent quality. I love the author's characterisation of Kim who is acerbic, though relentless and determined as an investigator. Her colleagues are all well-drawn characters, collectively making an extremely effective team and I especially liked the contributions from DC Stacey Wood who was working part-time on a cold rape case inquiry.
This book worked well for me as a single-read police procedural, but there is no doubt that reading the previous books provides further background into the characters. The dialogue between team members was pithy and witty and very pleasurable to read. Angela Marsons hones each of her books with well-researched and timely topics, keeping the reader totally engaged throughout.
The psychological element of the author's stories is always done extremely well, and this is testament to the research she puts into her novels. As I fully expected, this is a massively entertaining and polished addition to a series that has a huge number of crime fiction fans. The time I spent reading this brilliant novel was well worth it and I confidently recommend Deadly Cry.
I received a complimentary copy of this novel at my request from Bookouture via NetGalley and this review is my unbiased opinion.
