What the heck did I just read? This was really good and I didn't see most of it coming! I give it 4.5 stars just because I did predict one twist. very good otherwise.
I love this author's books I have yet to find one that I dont like. As usual I was hooked from the beginning loads of twists and turns a great domestic thriller
With an ending I did not see coming
I thought this was a fantastic gripping , psychological thriller and I couldn’t put it down. Tess, working as a nurse, is swept off her feet by Daniel, a handsome prominent surgeon. After a short whirlwind romance they get married and move from London to Bath where Daniel has a new post. They haven’t been there long when Tess notices a change in Daniel. Gone is the caring, lovable man she fell in love with and in his place is a controlling monster subjecting Tess to physical, mental and sexual abuse. She is made suspicious about Daniel’s past after Martha, an elderly neighbour, tells Tess to ask Daniel what happened to his first wife and child, who Tess was a unaware of. Daniel takes away her phone and bank card and Tess begins to feel more isolated from her family and friends, she realises that she has married a monster and fears for her life as she plans her escape. This book is a compelling and dark read, chilling and shocking and full of twists and turns. A highly recommended read.
Thanks to Netgalley and Bookouture for giving me the opportunity to read and review this book.
I loved Liz’s other books but this one fell a bit flat for me. There’s been a few abusive husband thrillers recently and they all follow a similar plot. This was just a bit predictable. It also started pretty slow and struggled to grab my attention. Once it picks up there’s a fair bit of graphic abuse and also talk of suicide so bear that in mind. The ending is the only part that actually made me question anything and then the questions were answered pretty sharpish. I wasn’t kept guessing for long. It is written well though so if you are looking for a quick domestic thriller and you haven’t read any before then this might be the book for you.
I received a copy of the ebook via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review

Book 📱: The Next Wife
Release Date: Available Now!!! (Released on November 3, 2020)
Author: Liz Lawler
Genre: Mystery & Thrillers
Sipping Synopsis: Tess is a woman who has it all- a huge house, a doctor husband, a new marriage, and her dream job. Unfortunately, it isn’t all what she thought it would be. Her husband (Daniel) starts acting different, a woman comes up to her and tells her to ask about his previous wife, and to top it off she starts receiving anonymous letters.
Final sipping thoughts: This book turned out to be nothing like I thought. I just knew I knew what was happening and I was SO wrong, but it felt so good to be wrong. I can say though I absolutely loathed Daniel and wanted to reach into the book and just punch his lights out. I haven’t been infuriated by a character in such a long time that I had to take a deep breath, lol. The Next Wife will give you chills and thrills and you will be surprised with how the story plays out.
There isn't enough I could say about how good this book is!!! I was hooked from page one, and I think my favorite thing was I was guessing up until the end and that is my kinda read!!! I really liked Tess as the protagonist and she told the story in an amazing way. This book hit every note on my psychological thrill checklist, the mystery, suspense, secrets, lies, dark, twisted, enthralling read!! Who doesn't picture the perfect life tale as old as time with wanting to marry a doctor have the perfect family..... but behind closed doors is what no one could see and how imperfect the lives of Tess and Daniel really were!! I couldn't put this one down and will definitely be looking into Liz Lawler and following for her reads! This is in my list of top 10 for the the start of 2021! I found myself turning on the light for shadows, felt heart stopping moments when reading and realizing I was holding my breath!! The details from the perfume, to the little behavior changes of Daniel, to the notes of someone watching Tess at the train station just added to the thrill ride of the whole unraveled storyline!! Thank you so much Netgalley and Liz Lawler for writing and executing a flawless psychological suspense thrill that captivated from page one to the end!!
This was a book that take me longer than expected, it is a good book but I don’t feel this like an actual thriller.
Part of the reason why this was si hard to read is as this book is about a domestic violence, the author give me the chill, I could felt anger but also I felt afraid as the main character.
The final plot twist were good, but I really was expecting this to be a thriller that got me wondering what was the true, and I only got there until the very last chapters.

What a brilliant book. I was hooked from the start.. There were so many twists and turns in the story and it wasn't until the very last page that all the questions get answered. WOW !!!! I loved it
This was my first time reading this author but it definitely won’t be the last. A gripping thriller that had me hooked from the beginning and wanting to zip through it to find out what was going on. Twists and turns galore and an ending that I didn’t see coming but pulled it all together. Thanks to NetGalley for the privilege to read and review this book.
I was given this book by Net galley for an honest review-
A domestic psychological thriller you won’t want to miss
A whirlwind courtship leads to a quick marriage, a move to a new town and a new mansion
But what was so beautiful suddenly turns evil and Tess finds herself tip toeing around Daniels moods and violence — what has caused this change? Tess wants out Will she be able to escape the man everyone thinks is the perfect doctor?
This was an excellent book with twists and turns that kept me awake until the "wee small hours". It has a totally gripping storyline and the insidious domestic violence was all too realistic.Well written and well researched.
Thank you Liz Lawler, Bookouture and Netgalley for giving me the opportunity to read this book and give my unbiased opinion.
A stranger comes to the door and tells Tess to not trust her husband and to find out what happened to his last wife.
Daniel is keeping tighter reins on his wife Tess he doesn't let her have her phone or bank card
Daniel makes a mistake and tells Tess to take the blame for it.
She is soon realizing what her husband is really like.
Will Tess Leave or will she not get the chance.
A real well told story
Thanks NetGalley
Thank you bookouture, Liz Lawler, and Netgalley for this book in exchange for an honest review. This gripping book kept me at the edge of my seat. Don’t plan on getting any sleep while you’re reading this! 🌟🌟🌟🌟1/2 rating from me.
Liz Lawler really knows how to build tension and write a fast paced read and The Next Wife was no exception! There were twists and turns, as to be expected, that were difficult to predict and there was a leading character that you loved to hate (David). All in all I highly recommend this book as you'll fly through it and it will leave you wanting more from this talented author.
Thank you Netgalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read this book for an honest review.
The young nurse thought she had married the handsome doctor , he was the man of her dreams or so she thought. The honeymoon did not last long . This is a psychological thriller full of twists and turns. This is such a good read you will not be able to put it down 5stars
Thank you to Netgalley and Bookoutre for the advanced copy of this book!
I read quite a few thrillers and this one started out in a similar way to most others but took some wild turns I wasn’t expecting! Tess is a nurse and falls in love with a doctor in a whirlwind romance. They live in London and he sweeps her off her feet and after a few months they get married. He’s a really talented surgeon and says there’s an opportunity in another hospital and they move shortly after getting married.
Tess realizes her new husband, Daniel, expects her not to work and take care of the house. He doesn’t explain anything about the massive house they’ve moved into and claims the last people sold it completely furnished. When she tries to take down the curtains to clean them, Daniel loses it. Tess starts to slowly unravel his past.
This was a fast paced read with trigger warnings for domestic abuse, ideation and suicide.
Book Description:
I should never have married him. I ignored the warnings. It’s what you do when you’re in love. Ignore what you don’t want to see.
My husband is everything I ever dreamed of. A handsome, successful doctor who swept me off my feet.
Our new life together is perfect.
He’s perfect.
But am I good enough for him? I never seem to get anything right. And I’m starting to feel a little afraid of the man I married.
He’s taken away my bank card and my phone. I don’t know what to think or what to do. I gave up everything for him and now I’m trapped.
Then a stranger comes to our door. She tells me that I can’t trust my husband.
That I should ask him what happened to his first wife.
Totally gripping, chilling and with a twist you won’t see coming, The Next Wife is a dark, heart-stopping story of what really goes on behind closed doors. Fans of My Lovely Wife, B A Paris and JP Delaney will be completely enthralled by this addictive read.
BLOG TOUR REVIEW
Review for 'The Next Wife' by Liz Lawler.
Read and reviewed via NetGalley for Bookouture publishers and Bookouture anonymous
Publication date 3rd November 2020
This is the first book that I have read by this author.
I was originally drawn to this book by its eye catching cover and intriguing synopsis. I must admit I was also biased due to the publisher being Bookouture. I have yet to read a book published by Bookouture that I haven't enjoyed. Hopefully this won't be the first... Watch this space! (Written before I started reading the book).
This novel consists of a prologue and 55 chapters. The chapters are short to medium in length so possible to read 'just one more chapter' before bed...OK, I know yeah right, but still just in case!
This book is based in Bath, UK 🇬🇧 . I always enjoy when books are set in the UK as I'm from Wales and have sometimes visited areas mentioned in the book. This makes it easier to picture the scenes. I have, in fact, visited Bath so am hoping to be able to set the scenes smoother in my head.
This book is written in third person perspective and the main protagonists are Martha and Tess. I enjoy books written in third person with several protagonists as it let's you see the bigger picture of what's going on and you get to know more characters more, what they are thinking and what they are doing. It feels like you get to see the whole picture and not miss out in anything.
This book is extremely well written and the fantastic descriptions definitely add to the dark atmosphere. The synopsis and the cover worked very well with the plot. I am most definitely looking forward to reading more books by this very talented author.
The storyline is extremely compelling and addictive as well as very dark, even more so as it is something that sadly happens on a daily basis, I myself have had some of the events of the book happen to me. It was gripping from the beginning and throughout completely page turning and nail biting. It is most definitely a roller-coaster ride of emotions from tension, suspense to genuine fear for Tess. There were moments where I was relived, shocked and at all times I was on the edge of my seat. I am glad to see more and more books being brought out that focuses on the subject of domestic violence as it comes in all different forms. I was not expecting the end at all which is always a bonus for me as its getting harder and harder to shock me!!
The characters all played their roles very well. I definitely had a soft spot for Cameron and Martha and felt very proactive of Tess. Sara did annoy me at the beginning because if she hadn't said what she did Tess may have left alot sooner. It's quite hard to review the characters too much without giving much away. I think it's fantastic what the surprise character did, good on him and I agree 10000 % with his actions. I did find a small amount of sympathy for another which also shocked me!!
Please if yourself or someone you know is going through this PLEASE get help, PLEASE talk to someone. You can even message me, just someone!!
Overall an extremely dark but sadly realistic addictive and gripping page turner.
Genres covered in this novel include Mystery, Suspense, Thriller, Psychological Fiction, Drama and Psychological Thriller amongst others.
I would recommend this book to the fans of the above as well as .
320 pages.
This book is £1.99 to purchase on kindle via Amazon which I think is an absolute bargain for this book!!!
Rated 5 /5 (I LOVED it ) on Goodreads, Instagram, Amazon UK and Amazon US and on over 30 Facebook pages plus my blog on Facebook.

I would like to thank the author, the publisher and NetGalley for giving me the opportunity to read an ARC of this book. It was an absolutely brilliant psychological thriller, it drew me in from the first page and didn’t let me go until the end, I literally couldn’t put it down. I will be recommending this book to my friends.
A really good and well written psychological thriller, with a well developed storyline, that keeps you interested until the end.
Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture for the ARC of this book. This is my honest review. All opinions are my own.
TRIGGER WARNING: this book deals with domestic and sexual violence
After a whirlwind romance, Tess and Daniel Myers marry and relocate to Bath. But Tess is beginning to have doubts and Daniel's behaviour concerns her. Meanwhile, elderly Martha is haunted by the past and convinced that Daniel hides a dark secret...
The prologue of The Next Wife instantly draws the reader in as we see a man attacking a woman and child. Next we see Martha, confused but determined to expose the truth although it is not clear what that is. Then we see the deterioration of the relationship between Tess and Daniel as the facade of perfection disintegrates.
Tess is a very likeable yet vulnerable character as is Martha. Tess begins the book excited for her future but is soon regretting her marriage. There is a huge sadness attached to the older character as we see Martha's mental deterioration in tandem with her determination to reveal Daniel's identity to the world.
The Next Wife is an intense psychological thriller. Daniel systematically and insidiously takes over all aspects of Tess' life and removes her freedoms, from her choice of clothes to her career. I wanted to shout at her to run away from him!
As a fan of medical thrillers, I enjoyed the added dynamic of the doctor and nurse couple and the effect this has on the plot development. The power play occurs in their personal and professional lives with devastating consequences.
I really enjoyed The Next Wife and look forward to reading more from author Liz Lawler in the future.
