A retelling of the Cinderella fairy tale, Slippers and Thieves pulls you into a world with magic, romance and action with some secrets and betrayal added to the mix. The Queen of Hearts and Cheshire cat even make an appearance!

The story alternates between Elle's and Alec's narration, which I liked because it gave me a glimpse into how both of them think and feel. Elle is running from a tragic and painful past while Alec is navigating a problematic relationship with his parents as the heir to their high-end jewelry empire. The two happen to meet one day and fall in love. The problem is their love could spark a war.

I read half the book in one sitting the first time I picked it up! I loved the world Bauer has built with three races of magical beings--fairies, shifters, and witches/wizards--coexisting in a delicate balance. You get the feeling it wouldn't take much to upset that balance.

I loved the world building and the different kinds of magic the characters possessed and how they could use it. It was difficult when I had to stop reading for the night. I just HAD to know what new problem Elle and Alec would be facing next. It was really interesting to see how tangled the web was woven between Elle's and Alec's families with the purpose of keeping the two apart, and just when I thought it couldn't get more complicated, it did in the best way possible.

This is the second book I've read in this series. I read the first book, Wolves and Roses, which is a retelling of the Sleeping Beauty fairy tale. There's enough info that allow you to read these books in any order. I now want to go back and read books 2 and 3! I definitely recommend this book and this series.

This is an extremely interesting concept: magical beings living out fairytale templates. Elle is a jewel un-thief, rescuing stolen goods and returning them to their rightful owners for the low cost of their offered rewards. She is also a Cinderella life template, meaning she is destined to live out the Cinderella-story.

This book started out really strong. I was hooked by the interesting premise from the start. However, the time skips were rather jarring. The transitions could have been eased in a little more... I was left with a bit of whiplash. I believe these time periods covered events in the previous books in this series. However, every individual novel should be *able* to stand on its own. Some sort of recap should have happened because it honestly read like someone ripped a few chapters from the book. Even if I had read Bryer's arc, I read so much that is highly likely I would have forgotten much of it by the time I reached this book.

The writing could use some fleshing out: generally more descriptive details and some more adjectives all around. Much of the text was direct action and dialogue... which isn't exactly bad but left me wanting more. There were too many side characters that weren’t given enough personality/story to make them memorable. I was constantly wondering “wait who is that again?” and had to search. Unfortunately, there were a fair amount of typos and mis-names in this book.

I don't know how she manages to have just so many stories to tell all the time, and how they all come out so good, but I'm glad for it!

This re-telling of Cinderella mixed with her special brand of paranormal / world building / sense of humor is just a fantastic addition to the series and her book world as a whole. There's not a single story of hers that I don't immediately fall into and come out of feeling both satisfied and like I need more!

Elle and Alec are so fun to follow and I can't wait for the next expansion pack for this world! ;)

A really fun take on this fairytale. I love how it's been twisted and changed into something new, but still recognisable. You have the 'aha!' moments when you can see where something came from. Very enjoyable, I've got a new series to check out (:

Slippers and Thieves is the fourth book in the Fairy Tales of the Magicorum series. In this world, certain individuals are born with a life template--a specific fairy tale will apply its rhythm and major events to their lives, and trying to resist will only lead to trouble. Elle, however, is determined to be her own person, love who she will, and live her own life.

I loved the concept of the novel, but I got a bit tripped up in the execution. I don't want to come down too harshly on a mid-series book that I chose to read without consulting the previous ones. However, from the descriptions, this book is the first of the series to feature Elle, not Bry, as the main character, so I thought I would be able to ease into it well enough. I've read plenty of other mid-series books where I was able to do so.

Elle takes the time to explain things to the audience, which I generally appreciate as a new reader, but I fear it might be overdone in this case. When a new character, minor or not, appears in the scene, Elle explains who they are and her history with them. When she goes to an important location, this is also explained. It breaks the flow of the prose, and it's more details than I need to follow a good story. When we first encounter Bry in chapter one, for example, Elle explains who she is, what her nickname is short for, and how they met rather than focusing in on the key information--these two are close friends. And that's something that could be easily shown by how they treat each other, no additional explanation needed.

The diversions contribute to an overall jumpy feeling to the writing. It will rush through some scenes and slow down unnecessarily in others. There's a lot repetitive language, usually in the form of a joke, but the humor didn't always land for me or it felt injected into an otherwise serious moment and muddied the tone of the scene. Sometimes it felt like Elle was asking the audience, "Can you believe what's happening now?" which likewise threw me out of the story's world.

All that being said, I really like the idea of the fairy tale life template. It reminded me a bit of a character who gets a vision of the future they don't like and spends the story trying to alter their current timeline. The Queen of Hearts as the queen of a group of vampires was a fun take on the character, too. I would have loved to see more of the adventure in Egypt that the characters mention in chapter eight (the second chapter eight; the chapter numbers are reset with each section of the book). The trip takes place off the pages but gets referenced often enough that I wondered if these were events that were explored (or will be explored) in another book.

Overall, while I can't enthusiastically recommend Slippers and Thieves as a standalone book, if the premise intrigues you, go check out the first book, Wolves and Roses. Some books really do need their fellows in a series to truly shine, and just because the writing style didn't hit home with me doesn't mean it won't greatly appeal to others.

I loved this take on an old fairytale. Ms Bauer sure knows how to weave a story and suck you in. I love Elle and Bry they are two kick as girls I can’t wait to see what mischief they and their boys get into next. And will the restore all the magic to the world? I would definitely recommend this book and this series.

There's nothing like knowing that if you fall in love and have the first real kiss that the world you know of will start to crumble. No pressure. There was nothing ordinary about this retelling. There was nothing about this story that said it was once a bed time story. There was so much here to enjoy, laugh at, and almost want to enroll in high school again. At least this particular high school. This was more than I was expecting but on point for having me wanting more of the world of the Magicorum.

The cat made me feel like we may be getting a little Alice in Wonderland retelling somewhere down the line. I am all on board no matter what direction that Christina choose to go. I love reading her worlds of fictional fantasy and paranormal reality. They are easy to read and relate to. The characters are great and the world building phenomenal.

A Cinderella story unlike any you have read before....this one contains many mystical plot twists, with elves, fairies, trolls and werewolves thrown in for good measure.
A thoroughly enjoyable page turner of a book.

I was expecting so much from this book and it delivered. It's not a retelling per se. It's not wholly original. The world building is strong. The characters are dynamic. The plot is easy to follow and managed to surprise me a few times. I hadn't read anything by Christina Bauer, but now I want to read others in this series.

This is the type of retelling that I get REALLY into. It's a mixture of different fairy tale characters and it makes for a wonderful story. This is not the first book in the series, however, it was easy to get into the story and understand the characters. I liked this one so much though, that I would recommend going back to the beginning and starting there because I'm sure it will be just as great!

I really enjoyed the author's addition of snarky comments that made me laugh out loud. the characters have these great moments that bring their personality right out of the pages. It was a delight to read!

Overall, I would recommend this book to readers that enjoy YA fairy tale retellings with a romance plot. It was well-written, and a lot of fun to read! I'm looking forward to the next book!

In this installment we get to see the history of Elle and Alec. New and fun characters, and an amazing plot line. Lots of mischief and romance.

I didn't read the other 3 Magicorum books before this one because I heard it wasn't needed and it was still really, really easy to follow everything that was going on. I don't think you can read them entirely out of order (for example, it sounds like #4 and #5 definitely need to be read in sequence) but its fine to start at this one.

This was fun! Slippers and Thieves and its narration is a quick Cinderella retelling that never feels like it takes itself too seriously. It's insta-lovey to the extreme, the characters are archetypes, and the plot is predictable, but I think that's okay in a retelling. This isn't groundbreaking but not all books need to be.

First off Let me say I feel cheated by this gorgeous cover. Who is this regal queen?? I must know her story! As far as I can tell it's not anyone in this book. What I thought I was getting was an epic Cinderella retelling. What I got was a little more like a middle-grade fairytale retelling. I won't say this book was awful because it wasn't I was able to get all the way through but it was much more juvenile than I expected. That might not be a bad thing for most readers.
My other issue as some stated you can defiantly read this as a stand-alone as I did. The author does slyly fill you in on what happened in other books BUT There are large pieces missing. Like in the middle of the book, it seems like the crew of friends goes off on an adventure hunting zombies in Egypt. (No idea why this book doesn't say.) So there is a whole book that fits in the middle of this story.
Also, I'm not sure I understood the motivation of all of the adults in this book. Ok, so they were all disappointed in love with each other. Does that mean you try and torture, kill and brainwash teenagers? Does that mean that you want your only child in a loveless marriage at all costs? Unless it's something to do with being in a fairytale template. UNSURE.
Like I said I did enjoy parts of this book. There were a few humorous parts. Maybe the issue is I'm not a middle school reader.

this is the first I've read of this author's books, because I didn't realise it was part of a series, but that didn't stop me enjoying this a lot!

I found the idea of fairy tale templates fascinating and Elle is good fun, no passive heroine here. I liked Alec too, and enjoyed their developing relationship and adventures through the story.

A well written, interesting interpretation of an old favourite.

I really enjoy this author's work. In this series she puts a twist to the classic fairy tales. This one is a take on Cinderella. The characters and the setting are interesting and I always wonder how the characters are going to get out of the fix they are in.

This book is just as sassy, snarky, adventurous and imaginative as the rest in this series. I love the take on the fairy tales Christina Bauer has taken. They are imaginative and entertaining. In this one we get the Cinderella template play out.

Elle is a awesome heroine. She doesn’t take crap from anyone and she stands for herself. The ending has you wonder about one of her stepsisters though. What power does she hold within that no one knows. Elle has closed off her heart due to so much pain and disappointment she has had since her mom died. And her stepmom what a piece of work that woman is. Not as bad as Alec’s dad and mom but close. I love how Elle has risen above it and carved out her own life and continued school and making her parents proud. she fights for herself and those she cares for and is very loyal. The exchanges between her and Alec are entertaining and full of sass.

Alec is the charming guy you sometimes wonder about only he is Prince Charming. He isn’t what I expected though. He cares for those that work for him and doesn’t chase the spotlight like his parents. Instead he runs from it and learns to become his own person. He has thoughts and views. I think under him LeCharme would rise further as a jewelry company. Those working for him would put more of an effort that is for sure because he shows them kindness, respect and is fair to them. His best friend is a wolf and watching them interact is a hoot. He is a hero you root for and stand behind because he isn’t what he seems. He is smart, powerful and kind. He isn’t greedy and doesn’t come off as selfish and arrogant. He has seen the hate his parents have for each other and doesn’t want that in his life. I felt so bad for him with the ends his parents went to and go to to keep him from love. They are horrible. But seeing him with elle and how they have that snarky sassy banter and just play off each other and yet respect and support each other as they fight their attraction or as Elle denies the attraction is awesome and entertaining.And the Queen of Hearts was a great addition to the tale. Watching him fight and see how powerful he is and how powerful love is was great. Seeing his thoughts, views and feelings showed his depth and that he wasn’t just a one dimensional greedy person like his dad. He had emotions, was loyal and kind. He wanted what was right for the people working for him and his family and those around him. And his protection and love for Elle shines through. His love for his friends is a beacon and grounds him as well. But his parents man they are pieces of work. What his dad does is just horrendous.

The story is a nice fun twist to the Cinderella tale and we are left wondering what that dark elf and Elle’s and Alec’s family is up to. We get both Alec’s and Elle’s view and I liked Alec’s more only because it gets us to truly see who Alec is and what he really thinks about things. The story engages you and draws you into the twisted and entertaining take on the Cinderella tale.
