I really wanted to give this book three stars but at about the half way mark, things really just started to go downhill. I really felt as if the author had so many books that they wanted to write but they were told they were only allowed to write one so everything was shoved in, sometimes not flowing well and breaking immersion. What also broke immersion was the diary entries at the "end of the chapter" (there weren't really chapters but it's what broke up the sections of the story). I felt that the book would have flowed a lot better without them. I understand that the purpose was to inform the reader of backstory but the backstory wasn't even really necessary a lot of the time. I felt that everything moved too quickly and characters were too accepting of what was happening at any given moment. I'd say the only other thing that bothered me, although petty, was the fact that the main character's name kept switching back and forth from Tom to Thomas, sometimes in the same sentence. I got used to it after a while but at first it was sort of hard to follow. Again, I would have loved to give this one a 3, it just felt a little rushed.
I understand the temptation to merge pirates and the paranormal because it worked so well for Disney, but most of the books I’ve seen try to do this feel like they have too many disparate elements and no real cohesive story.
This book does a little better than average in that regard, but I’m still not sure that the paranormal elements of the story were truly a value add. There’s plenty of derring do in this tale, which is what works best with pirate stories, and the magical elements just felt a little silly. I also didn’t feel at all interested in the romance, which took up way too much real estate in the story.
Better we’re tue fight scenes and daily life of a pirate expository sections, which brought the story and the characters to life and helped me invest more in Molly.
I didn’t mind reading this and the pacing was mostly fine, but I’m not sure I’m interested in more if the series continues.

I really don't know how I feel about this one. The writing overall is not.....great. It felt a bit too wordy and the beginning was peppered with some gems of descriptions, like "...her unrestrained breasts swung at Thomas like a pair of medieval flails breath her blouse and she poised to strike." . I mean, I've seen flails fly and for breasts to do that is kind of impressive. Aside from that I liked the incorporation of werewolves and vampires, I wasn't expecting that. I felt like there could have been more chemistry between Molly and Thomas. They both could have been really strong characters, but Molly felt like a damsel in distress most of the time. Also anytime they were in danger it was resolved within a handful of paragraphs so I never worried about them. I did enjoy the final confrontation. I just wish the whole book had that energy. 2.5/5
I could not get into this book. The prose was so flowery and it felt like slogging through so much unnecessary language to get one thought across. Not for me at all.
I am a huge mood reader. A lot of the titles on my shelves can be categorized based on what is hitting the spidey sense for my reading. And there are times when all I wanna read about is pirates. Lol it is funny but true none the less. So I was super stoked whenever I come across intriguing finds such as this one.
Unfortunately, this book fell flat for me. I struggled to even finish the book because it just felt like it dragged on and on.
I think this was an amazing idea with just more work needed on the execution

This was one of the longest short books I’ve read in a while. It just dragged on and on and on for me. The combination of pirates, magic, djinn, werewolves, pirates, and demons could have worked, but it didn’t. Honesty, this book is all over the place, with the characters jumping around into one misadventure after another with various fantastical creatures. The writing tried too hard to be epic, poetic, and dramatic, making it come off more as cheesy than any of the things it attempted. It makes excessive use of similes—overdone similes, at that. In addition, the narration felt like watching a tennis match as it frequently bounced back and forth between Thomas and Molly, even multiple times within the same paragraph ("Thomas . . . " "Molly . . . " "Thomas . . . " "Molly . . . ").
I wasn’t overly fond of either of the main characters. Molly is a danger magnet but alternates between being a naive little flower and a talented gunslinger. Somehow. We’re supposed to root for Tom, but in actuality, he does kill a lot of people without much thought.
And then there were the awkward descriptions. I almost quit reading when Tom was staring at Molly’s dress-covered rear end, which was described as melted candle wax falling over a ripe peach. Gag. And Molly staring at Tom’s “indiscretion” swinging back and forth like a pendulum when she ran into him naked in the stairwell. Seriously, I’m not joking.
There were also all the italicized sections addressing the reader. It was like wading through a history book.
My favorite part of this book was clicking the next page on my Kindle and seeing the end of it. I don’t even care that there are two more books. I’m out.
Notes: Maybe some swearing.
Pirates and werewolves with a unique plot and likeable characters. Enjoyed this story and the relationships between the main characters
I requested an ARC of this book as I love reading about pirates and Folklore.
This book was unexpected and very different than any other pirate novel I’ve ever read.
I was completely shocked when the story entertained Vampires, and Werewolves.
I love pirates and I love Lore so this was pretty much a slam dunk read for me. The characters were intriguing and realistic, the historical aspect was beautifully done and the action and adventure that was in this book wasn't disappointing at all. This series is a new must read for me and I look forward to reading others in this series.
The writing - ⭐
The story - ⭐⭐
Overall - ⭐⭐
I was excited about this one, I mean Pirates that turn into werewolves? How could I not be?! And in the end, I couldn't even finish it. Honestly I kept trying, but it didn't even have chapters, it was a mass of fast paced 'and then this, and then this, and then this happens...' and because of it nothing that happened felt like it had any depth to it because the reader is suddenly shunted into the next event.
I feel like chapters give the reader time to stew, a natural break to think over what's happened so far, and there's always that feeling of 'oh go on just one more...' when you're reading. Lore takes that away from you by not having them.
I'm sorry, but it's a no from me.
Pirates, werewolves, vampires and magic! This book had everything I could ever want except for a clear voice.
The switching views between characters without chapters made reading thia book muddled. It was hard to stay on track with the many story lines.
The strange random ramblings of the "scholar" was confusing and insulting to the reader. Having the history of the lores watered down and spoon fed to us was not needed. It did not move the story along, only treated the reader as ignorant in that it had to explain what we had just read and hold our hand to put puzzle pieces together. It really broke up the beautiful organic way that good stories form in ones mind and come together.
I really wanted to like this book but it was just not an enjoyable read.
Unfortunately this book wasn’t for me at all I found the characters, particularly Milly to be flat one one dimensional and I didn’t really relate to them or are about them , so for me it’s a lot harder to enjoy a story if you don’t care. It also felt quite slow and took forever to read.

With so much potential, I was disappointed with the way this story develops. Molly aka Mary Sue never really becomes more than a plot development point. Thomas, the supposedly dashing and charming pirate captain, comes across as wildly unpredictable self-absorbed jerk instead. Again, this is a romance novel that was not billed as such, which ticks me off a bit. Disclaimer: I hate romance novels. Reading about how someone’s junk swings around like the pendulum of a grandfather clock is the best way to make me howl with laughter, not want to read more.
There are some continuity issues (eg. the crew is waiting in the garden then they’re in the dungeon picking up the captain a moment later?). The best part of the whole plot happens in the last 5% of the book and it’s over so quickly if you blink you’ll miss it.

I'm always up for a pirate book and if you're making it paranormal, sign me up! This book has a lot of great elements and plenty of sailing the seas. I also thought Tom was a funny, charismatic character and you never knew what he was truly thinking. Molly has a lot of potential, but didn't quite get there in this book. Maybe in the sequel she'll learn more about what magesmiths can do and start coming into who she was meant to be.
The thing I struggled most with in this book was that there are no chapters, just three main parts. This made the story feel long and really slowed down my reading. Having chapter breaks also lets the reader see their progress and breaks up the events so they don't run into each other. I also thought that the plot seemed to be Tom getting captured, fighting and being severely hurt, then getting away and healing. This happened at least four times and began to feel tedious. I would have liked to learn more about Molly's dad and magesmiths in general, maybe seen other werewolves and more supernatural creatures.
I did like Molly and Tom's slow burn romance and they fit together well. She did get some fighting scenes and I enjoyed seeing her kick butt. Tom was also a great character, he had a lot of secrets, things up his sleeve, and a heap of charm.
Overall I this was an okay read for me. The ending was a bit of a cliffhanger, but I'm not sure that I'm invested enough to continue.

A Pirate's Charm took FOREVER to get through. One thing I didn't understand was the whole no chapters thing. It was like a whole mystery of where I was in the book would be thrilling or make this a page turner. Spoiler alert, it didn't. Maybe the kindle version will have chapters but at this point, I already suffered through the eARC that I don't want to even pretend to look at the KU version.
Before I started this, I was honestly super intrigued to dive into it. Anything with pirates and supernaturals/paranormal beings will make this girl happy. Unfortunately, this did nothing for me. I was more frustrated, annoyed, and confused than anything. At some point, I was totally guessing on what was going to happen "twist-wise" and I ended up being right most of the time.
In the end, I'm just glad that it's done and over with. I will not be volunteering as tribute for the next book. Sorry.
This is unlike any book Ive ever read and I loved it! I love the way Molly and Tom banter with each other, and they had some great chemistry.. As thomas is always getting injured it provides Molly with lots of opportunity to see him without a shirt.. I definitely want to continue on with this series.. I can't wait to see what kind of trouble that Tom and Molly are going to get into next!!
Molly is an independant woman who is trying to find a purpose to her life.. When she ends up on the run from some mysterious people, she runs right onto Captain Thomas Crowes ship.. Thomas Crowe is a charismatic, very handsome, and a man with some secrets.and he is on a mission.. One that Molly might be able to help him with... One night Molly finds out that well werewolves are real.. and that the captain happens to be one.. Now she has been thrust in to a world fulled with the supernatural.. and as scared as she is.. she also loves it.. and molly and the captain are also falling for each other..
I struggled with this one. I like the premise and never turn down a love story, but the pacing didn't feel consistent and it didn't flow properly for some reason, making it hard to follow in places. I couldn't tell if we were supposed to be reading from various POV (because that's how it seemed, but the transitions were unclear) or whether it was supposed to be omniscient third person and just got a little too... personal? It's tough to put my finger on, but it left me a bit confused.
Let's start with the things I like about this book: I like the world it's set in. Vampires, witches, werewolves AND pirates? Should have been the perfect book for me, since I love all of that stuff, right?
Wrong. The execution of those themes is one of the worst I've ever read, there is no flow in the writing and the content? My expectations were not met at all. Molly was a horrible flat and boring chatacter and I hated her almost immediately. I didn't sense any kind of chemistry between her and the captain, which is probably not that good if that book is supposed to be a romance...
Along the end, it got slightly better, but still not good enough for me to pick up the second book or read this one again.
The only thing that even managed me to get through this whole book were Mylus's diary entries because they were entertaining and fun to read.

Lore: A Pirates Charm is such a fantastic story. I loved this book. I think it is the first werewolf pirate book I have read. Definitely not one to be missed. The story is about Thomas and Molly and their adventures both on sea and land. They are wonderful together, play well off each other, and have great chemistry. I really enjoyed the narrator in between chapters filling us in on werewolf and vampire history and on the history of the charatcers. I absolutley cannot wait for the next book.
This book was totally different than any other pirate novel I’ve ever read. I have to say, I was a bit thrown off when werewolves, vampires, and magic got introduced, but I really loved their inclusion in the story.
Blurb
When Molly flees onto a pirate ship ran by Thomas Crowe, she has no idea what she’s getting into. Soon, she stumbles into a war between werewolves and vampires, becoming a key player in what’s to come.
Really, the only reason for my rating is that I never attached to the characters or the story. I was interested, but i was never on the edge of my seat, yearning for more. Part of this may have been the writing style, I did find it to be slightly stilted at times, but I feel like most people would love this book.
I actually really enjoyed the romance in this book. Molly and Tom were cute together, and I loved how Molly stayed independent even after she found a partner. They both did their fair share of saving each other, which definitely kept this entertaining.
The world building in this was also pretty strong. Somehow, in 300 pages, Douglas was able to create an entire universe, with feuding clans and cults. The little excerpts in between parts were super enjoyable to read, and really helped flesh out the story. Without ever including info dumps, the world building felt natural.
I was pretty disappointed by the lack of pirates in this. I mean sure, Tom is a pirate, but we don’t get to see much of him pirating. I wanted swashbuckling fights, raids, and bloodthirstiness. Considering that “pirate” is in this books title, I really wanted more pirates.
That being said, if you’re someone who loves werewolves, vampires, and pirates, this is the book for you! With a loveable romance, and a unique plot, this book will keep you engaged until the very last page.
