I requested this one when I saw it was described by the author as "frenemies to lovers" but then I read other reviews that made it a hard pass. Outing a queer character without consulting or considering them in follow-up is a major NOPE for me.
Witty banter, humor, and charm abound in this historical romance! It was fun, quick, and just an all around enjoyable read to get lost in the pages of. This easily reads as a stand-alone, as I didn’t read the first book in this series and found it to be just fine and hold up by itself. But, you had better believe I will be going back and reading book one now because I liked this one so much!
The plot is simple and I’ll sum it up in few words here. Infamous friends amongst English high society, widowed Diana (Lady Templeton) and Jeremy (Marquess of Willingham) get into an argument at a ball one evening that quickly turns into a wager: Jeremy will get married within a year or Diana will give up one hundred pounds. The question then remains, will win the wager, or will they end up winning each other’s hearts?
I loved the cast of characters here so much, both main and supporting. They were a definite highlight for me and I was sad to turn the last page on them. I will say that while I enjoyed the two POV’s we get here, there were times it got a bit repetitive which detracted from the flow of the story and made it a bit jilted. Otherwise I though the writing was fantastic, especially when it came to the dialogue. Diana and Jeremy were just too much fun!
If you love your romance with a whole lot of wit and taking place within a historical timeline, add this one to your TBR ASAP or better yet just go make it your next read. It was refreshing and light and everything I was needing in my reading life, and I don’t doubt it will be the same for you!
Thank you so much to NetGalley and Atria Books for the gifted e-copy.
This book is a delightful, regency romcom full of the humour and romance that I’ve now come to expect from Martha. I adore how she writes friendships and the care that she’s taken with these characters. I can’t wait to read her next book!
I loved this book! I don’t read historical romance much, but after reading this one I immediately picked up the first in the series as well and now have library holds for more. I loved the banter between Jeremy and Diana and hope to read more from this friend group soon! The only thing preventing this from being 5 stars was the lack of an epilogue. The story felt like it needed just a bit more to really wrap it up.
I've always loved a Regency romance, and this has been especially true post-Bridgerton. To Love and to Loathe by Martha Waters is the second book in The Regency Vows series, and with this one, we get a couple involved in a wager where they might stand to lose their hearts...to each other.
Many thanks to the author, publisher, and NetGalley for sharing this book with me. All thoughts are my own.
Love the feminist spin on period romances. Loveable characters and wonderful plot. Fans of period romances will definitely enjoy.
I really loved the first book in the series, To Have and to Hoax, so I knew I had to read this next book! I'm happy I did! It was another enjoyable read, and I look forward to the next book about Emily and Julian!
I received an e-ARC from the publisher.
I love a good regency historical romance, they always get me out of my reading funks and this one was no exception.
What’s not to love about a steamy enemies to lovers regency romp with a marriage wager thrown in for good measure?
If you’ve been missing Bridgerton’s give this one a try ASAP!
This book was very good. I always love my heroines to be intelligent, and sassy so Diana fit the bill perfectly. Jeremy was an excellent counterpart for her, and the banter was excellent.
I also loved Violet and Emily in this one. They were very amusing and I loved the friendship dynamics between them all. I'm assuming Emily's book is next, and I simply can't wait to read her story.
I didn’t realize this was the second book in a series and wish I would have read the first one before starting this. However, it was still a great read.
This is perfect for everyone still on the Bridgerton kick and love a regency romance! This is an enemies to lovers trope with great banter.
A sweet and sexy love story that matches the humor.. It was such a fun read!!!
I liked how Waters put these two characters together with such comedy, wittiness, filled with steamy sex appeal from both. Neither one know how the other really feel, while they continue to tango with verbal sarcastic attacks.
I adore regency period romances so I knew that this one would be right up my alley. I hadn’t read the first book yet when I requested it on NetGalley but wanted to read that first before reading this one. I wouldn’t say that it is 100% necessary for you to read the first book in this series to be able to read this book but there is some continuity. The focus of the first book is on Lady Violet Grey and Lord James Audley and the second book focuses on Lady Diana Templeton and Jeremy, Marquess of Willingham. Diana is a widow who has no desire to marry again because she enjoys her freedom too much so when Jeremy comes to her with his proposition, she decides to take him up on it. Diana and Jeremy soon realize that there may be more to their relationship than what they had planned. While the story is a tad predictable, it was still a fun read. I really loved Diana and Jeremy’s banter. They were such fun characters. I definitely liked them and their story more than Violet and James from the first book. Their story felt more petty and ridiculous whereas this one was fun, witty, and cute. I am hoping that the third book will be about Emily and Julian. If you’re looking for a flirty historical romance, I recommend checking this book out.
This book is very reminiscent of Bridgerton! Between the romance, dance cards, old English, and fake fiancee, I am getting early 2021 flashbacks! If you're missing the Bridgerton binge, I highly recommend this book.
To Love and To Loathe is the companion novel to To Have and To Hoax, and is just as fun, sexy, and delightfully over-the-top. It follows Diana and Jeremy, who appeared as supporting characters in To Have and To Hoax (though you don't necessarily need to read that one first to appreciate this story). Diana thinks that she is living the life she has always wanted as the widow of a wealthy man, and Jeremy is a notorious bachelor facing immense pressure to get married. One night at a dinner party, they have a big argument that leads them to make a deal that is supposed to lead them to completely separate but equally desired situations. Before they know it, though, it ends up leading them toward each other.
This is a classic enemies-to-lovers romance, and it has all of the banter and sexual tension that I love about the trope, but also a heartfelt exploration about how our perspectives and expectations can change over time. Waters gives us glimpses into Diana's prior marriage, and how she thought that marrying a wealthy older man at age 18 would bring her comfort without thinking about her own happiness. In historical romances, I love it when the heroine criticizes the narrative that surrounded marriage in her time, and Diana did so perfectly, even if it was a bit retroactive.
Honestly, though, this book was just so damn fun to read. There is a large cast of characters who all have very strong opinions about the romance at hand, which added a nice comedic layer to the story. Overall, I think I enjoyed this one as much as I enjoyed Waters's debut.
Thanks so much to the publisher and Netgalley for the advanced copy in exchange for a review.
This was a quick and cute read.
Would recommend for anyone who wants a weekend read!
This book was so cute!! I read it in less than 24 hours because I just couldn't put it down. The chemistry between the characters is absolute perfection and the banter is phenomenal. There was a perfect balance of cuteness and spiciness which I was a huge fan of. (4.5/5 stars)
I love when I get what I expect from a book. This was fun and enjoyable and a bit silly and very modern Jane Austen. I will definitely be looking into other titles from this author.
3.5/5 Stars: To Love and To Loathe was delightfully fun. I haven't read the first book in this series, but thankfully they don't necessarily need to be read in order. To Love and To Loathe follows Lady Diana Templeton, who makes a bet with her rival, the rakish Jeremy, Marquess of Willingham, that she will see him wed before the year is out. When Jeremy changes the wager to be a mutually beneficial affair, Diana and Willingham soon discover not just a mutual attraction simmering underneath their banter, but the beginnings of true feelings they do not want to admit. All sorts of regency hijinks ensue as Diana and Jeremy fight their feelings for each other and from everyone around them. It soon becomes clear that there is more to lose in this wager than their money or their pride-but their hearts and happiness too. I have to say that I really did enjoy all the witty banter and quirky humor in this book. Walters is a fantastic writer who captures romance, steam and humor in a very well balanced manor. I love the irreverence of our main characters and the enemies to lovers dynamic here. It's Austenian in the best way but also is refreshingly original. Although Diana got on my nerves a couple of times, the banter and their relationship with Jeremy were to die for. Jeremy is also super sexy and I just adored him from start to finish. The steam is pretty great as well. I didn't expect it to be so steamy but it worked without being over the top. I loved the strength of the female relationships and the emphasis on consent between partners that was often sidelined in the Regency era itself. Fans of Bridgerton and Jane Austen will truly devour this book like I did. Both characters development is well-formed and satisfying. Waters's To Love and To Loathe is perfect to get you out of a reading slump if you are seeking to enjoy a feminist and refreshingly comedic take on Regency romance and is one whose irreverence I had a lot of fun with.
This was a cute story with likable characters. I enjoyed reading To Love and to Loathe. This was a fast paced read that had me smiling when I finished.
Really enjoyed this historical romance! So much so that I can’t wait to pick up Martha Waters other book(s). It is clear this is kind of a sequel from another book, but read well as a stand-alone and I thought the romantic tension and empowering female characters were so fun!
