Thank you, Caroline Kepnes, for giving us more Joe Goldberg!!!! I absolutely LOVED You Love Me! What a ride!
Joe Goldberg is seriously one of my favourite fictional characters. This next chapter in Joe's story did not disappoint. Equally as creepy and disturbing as the first two books, I once again found myself rooting for Joe. Will Joe find happiness…will he ruin his chances?!?! Definitely a rollercoaster of a ride!
Great plot, and brilliant new cast of questionable characters, Caroline Kepnes' kept me on my toes! You never know who is good, and who is evil! Every page had me unsure of what was going to happen next, because as we all know, nothing is as it should be in Joe Goldberg's world.
If you loved You, and Hidden Bodies, you are definitely going to want in on Joe's journey in You Love Me. Fabulous!
So after reading "Hidden Bodies" and kind of hating it, I definitely went into this with very low expectations, and I was very pleasantly surprised! This installment brought back a lot of the aspects of what I loved about the first book, and I loved the direction the plot went in. I still think "You" is my favorite book of this series, but this was very solid. I don't know if I'll necessarily keep reading this series if Kepnes writes more books, though just because the ending of this one didn't "grab me" if that makes sense.
**Thank you NetGalley and the publisher for providing an e-arc in exchange for an honest review**
While I like the first two books in the series a little more this was still a fine book with some twists and surprises. ARC provide by NetGalley in exchange for a fair review.
I felt like the writing was a bit more scattered and hectic unlike in the first two books. Joe is still likeable but I felt like I wanted to get to know the other characters as well as we did with the first two books in the series.
I was really excited to read another installment of the You series, especially after watching the 2 seasons of the tv series on netflix. It was a long book and took a long time to really get into Joe's story again and hearing his innermost thoughts. There were a couple of things that just through me off - the way Joe kept referring to dead people as "RIP" and the mention of a "Murikami" which I just assumed was a reference to her private parts(?). Sometimes I can get annoyed by silly things in books that really distract me from the actual story. Unfortunately this is the case with this book. Definitely didn't love it.
This book was unlike the others in the series. It was hard to get through, and only became interesting in the last few chapters. Joe was no longer charming and likable, but rather dull and seemed to whine incessantly to no one at all. The other characters in the book are not even worth mentioning. The situation from the previous book in which he was involved with the character of Love was finished off in a brief and uninteresting way. I hope that the next one in the series brings back the Joe we all know and love, rather than this delusional and pathetic man obsessed with lemon heads.. (which was another seriously ridiculous series of moments in this book.)
YES! Just yes. More Joe is exactly what I needed in my life. This story showed a little bit of a different side to him than what we've seen before, and I couldn't be more here for it.
I've been anxiously anticipating the release of this book for YEARS and Caroline Kepnes didn't disappoint! This book truly blew my mind in the best of ways and I finished it in ONE SITTING! I truly hope the authors writes more books like this because they are intoxicating!
I just adore the You series but this one grabbed me by the throat and thrashed me around like a rag doll until I finished it! How can Joe be so insane but so adorable that women fall for him? Not sure but I fall for him every time and I'm certainly old enough to know better! This time he's moved to the Pacific Northwest and falls hard for Mary Kay, a librarian who has a teenage daughter (and that's a whole other story)! But Mary Kay, like Joe, harbors some secrets so it's not as easy as Joe thinks to woo her. So many great complications and twists to this novel and I loved every minute of it. Don't plan on doing anything productive while you are reading though as this will consume you!
Oh Joe...if you really read his words and sit on them, he is insane. You know that, but you love him anyway. You think he's funny, you think his quirkiness is adorable. You want to date Joe even though you know you shouldn't. I absolutely love everything about him. These books are my new favorite series. I'm afraid to watch the Netflix series. I don't want the Joe in my head tainted in any way. Yes Joe you're right...I love you. Don't judge me.
Hear goes Joe again...falling head over heels in love? Compulsion? Over a library coworker named Mary Kay. As common and ordinary as her name is and the small town is that he now lives. Joe hasn't really changed as much as he is truelly trying to. It has been fun to see him attempt to manipulate everyone's lives to get what he wants. In this case his prey is Mary Kay!
It's always fun to be back with everyone's favorite psychopath, Joe Goldberg, and especially fun to see him trying to turn over a new leaf on Bainbridge of all places. Seattle-ites will (or won't) get a kick out of how Joe sees his new home - Caroline Kepnes nails it in the details, attitude and overall feel of the place.
I loved seeing Joe in a whole new environment without the anonymity of the big city, but with his move out of LA and his prison stint, he also seems to have lost his edge. It's interesting to see him on his back foot ....panicky, almost desperate, lacking control. But it doesn't quite feel like the same Joe. Even he recognizes it, "And I didn't see any of it coming. I got soft when I moved here, trying so hard to be 'good' as if being good is ever that simple."
Overall, still a page-turner...that admittedly lacks the punch of the first two books in the series.
3.5 stars
Edited to add:// P.S.. After further consideration, I have to say, I love that Joe, the guy who thought he could manipulate anyone, who was a Big City NYC/LA guy, it was our Seattle and really Bainbridge bulls--t that wrecked his game. As someone who lives here, that is DELICIOUS.
***3.5*** This whole series is such a guilty pleasure because you know Joe is literally deranged and all of his actions are wrong but you still find yourself rooting for him in the end. “You love me” the third installment in this series is full of twist and turns as Joe tries to navigate his “new” life after getting out of jail and the fall out with Love’s family. In this novel Joe tries to stay on the straight and narrow path but we as readers being familiar with Joe and his compulsions know exactly how things are going to end up, however, getting there was a really fun trip. I did have to suspend my disbelief a couple times while reading this because some of the loose ends were just silly. For example why no one noticed Malanda was missing? All her things were still in her apartment. Overall, this was a super fun read. Joe is one of my favorite “bad” guys and I. would totally recommend this book. Thank you to the publisher and Netgalley for the E-arc in exchange for an honest review.
4.25 – 4.5 STARS
My favorite serial killer, Joe Goldberg, is back. And he’s in love—AGAIN! But this time around, Joe is determined to turn over a new leaf, having left the big cities behind for a simpler life in the Pacific Northwest. With his affection now trained on Mary Kay DiMarco, a local librarian and single mom, Joe attempts to win his lady’s heart by lending her a sympathetic shoulder to cry on. Through patience, perseverance and his usual MO of crazy, stalker-ish behavior, Joe just might get his HEA. But, wait—this is Joe we are talking about… things ALWAYS seem to get in his way!
In this third installment to Caroline Kepnes’ You series, this hilariously crazy love story is a fresh take on Joe Goldberg’s nonsensical saga. I realize that I must be a bit crazy myself, because I absolutely love getting inside of Joe’s head. Despite the fact that Joe is seriously deranged, I find myself rooting for him every single time. Even serial killers deserve a happy ending… right?!
If you know Joe, our lovesick, stalking sociopath, you know his romantic history and his fondness for pontificating about modern life and pop culture. Despite his controversial means of gaining access to his true love at the moment, you understand the strides he takes to finding his true love and creating the relationship and/or family he never had. He's just Joe, you know?
Now Joe is back from the craziness and consequences of the last book and living on idyllic and scenic Bainbridge Island, Washington. He's volunteering at the library and falls hard for librarian Mary Kay. It's only a matter of time before he makes her his, he thinks, but several obstacles prevent him from embarking on the relationship of a lifetime. Will he finally cement a satisfying and healthy relationship? Will he return to his murderous ways?
I fully expected a hackneyed reboot when I received a copy of this book, but it is a fresh and original story and even better than the sequel. It features a new cast of unique characters and so many surprising segues. It incorporates the best elements of both books, and you're never sure where the plot twists will land. Every person and situation that Joe encounters appear to contain unexpected land mines. Then again, Joe is like a grenade that you think is inert until it explodes.
Just when you think that things are settling down, the beginning of the end starts with a screaming revelation that fades into a whimper. You never expect what comes down the pike. Some of the events could be considered somewhat silly, but they're executed and written so well that it fits.
This book could be called a suspense novel or thriller, but it alters the meaning of the genre in a great way. And I would not be at all surprised if Joe made another appearance in a future novel. This came close to being a 5-star for me.
Joe Goldberg is as creepy as ever, but maybe he’ll get his happy ending this time. Joe moves to the Pacific Northwest and meets Mary Kay, the local librarian, when he volunteers at the library. He could’ve had a normal try at love but Joe is still Joe.
I was so happy to get an arc of this book. I've adored the previous two books of the series and this one did not disappoint. Is it wrong to say I missed Joe?
Highly recommend. Such a fun read.
I was slow to warm to Joe Goldberg. I made it no secret that I wasn't a fan of YOU. Somehow I was persuaded to read the sequel Hidden Bodies (Netflix's version of YOU probably had a lot to do with it) and I finally clicked with Joe. I'm still on the fence with You Love Me; I didn't hate it but I didn't love it. There was a lot going on and multiple twists that it fell short of believable. But You Love Me was still as well written as the previous YOU novels and I couldn't put it down.
I'm a big fan of Caroline Kepnes's work, and I had been eagerly awaiting her next book for what feels like ages now — so when NetGalley offered me the chance to read an early copy, I jumped at it. (Thanks, NetGalley!) I am happy to report that YOU LOVE ME doesn't disappoint in the slightest. Joe Goldberg, everyone's favorite sociopath, has relocated to the Pacific Northwest and is trying to construct a picture-perfect life for himself. Alas, Joe being Joe, things go off the rails and the bodies start piling up. This third installment felt both fresh and familiar (in the best way possible) — Caroline Kepnes fans are in for a treat!
Let me start by saying that I really enjoyed the previous 2 books. I also enjoyed the You TV series. This makes what I have to write here hurt a bit. Because the books and show were different, it's very confusing to follow the storylines. It also doesn't help that it's been SO long since the 2nd book was released. When I began this, I was so confused with the storyline that I had to go back and read spoilers of Book #2 to figure out what had happened. Not a good start.
While I appreciated the pop culture references - Cedar Cove, Closer and various books - I think many people won't understand them. The writing this time gave me a headache. Yes, it did physically give me a headache! Trying to discern between Joe's innermost thoughts and what he was actually saying got very frustrating. It would have been so much more helpful for the thoughts to all have been in italics or a different font or something that distinguished them more from the conversation.
The story itself also fell just a bit flat for me. Not really the excitement of the other books. Just kind of "meh". I get that Joe is trying to reform and be better, but do we want him to be better? NAH! And the ending?! UGH!
I wish that I had loved this book as much as the first two!
