Bookseller Delaney Nichol's day starts out the same as any other until she receives an invitation to attend an exclusive meeting at the request of the well known but somewhat eccentric Shelagh O'Connor. She's told the meeting is to discuss Shelagh's extensive library of rare and valuable books. Intrigued by the invitation, Sheila attends the meeting to find her friend Birk one of only three others in addition to herself at the meeting.
Introduced to the scavenger hunt that will lead to the ultimate prize, Delaney and Birk, together with a little help from Delaney's husband and some of her co-workers, set off in search of the first clue. The clues are clever and hidden in plain sight leading them through the pubs of Edinburgh. But when the past comes back to haunt the present and strange events start occurring in the city , the hunt becomes about much more than just a bunch of old books.
This story grabbed me from the start and never let go. The writing is sharp and crisp, the dialogue feels natural, and the twists and turns and keep the reader turning pages from the first to the last. This is a great addition to the series. And if you've never read a Scottish Bookshop mystery before, this story will leave you hungry for more.
Here's another cozy mystery from Paige Shelton’s Scottish Bookshop series.
Delaney Nichols, who works at The Cracked Spine bookshop, receives an invitation to visit Shelagh O’Conner, a rather quirky woman who wants Delaney, along with three others, to participate in a treasure hunt. The winner gets Shelagh’s practically priceless book, a first edition copy of “The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, as well as her library, and they all get a substantial sum just for participating in the hunt.
After talking with the shop owner, Delaney agrees to participate. There will be a series of clues to follow, and after the first one, Delaney and one of the others decide to work together.
When Shelagh disappears after the death of a man known to be connected to her, Delaney has more than one mystery to solve.
I enjoy all of the characters in this series.
Delaney’s mystery solving skills are put to the test when she is invited to compete in a treasure hunt. The prize is the personal library of Shelagh O’Conner, and she gets cash just for participating. But a bigger mystery arrives in the form of Shelagh’s disappearance. Is it a prank as part of the treasure hunt? Or is it related to something else?
I found the community feel of the bookshop, her husband’s pub and her landlords to be warmly engaging in this book, as well as the camaraderie of working with fellow treasure hunter Birk, who readers have met in previous books. They team up to work on the clues together and share the prize. Because of the cash for participating, it doesn’t feel overly competitive because they all wind up with something. It also keeps the pacing even as readers go between the treasure hunt and the other mysteries that may be entwined.
When a man who was there the night of the treasure hunt kickoff is murdered, by a mysterious figure who is reminiscent of Shelagh’s Mr.Hyde interpretation from the 70s. There have also been some thefts by this person and police are stumped if it is related to Shelagh’s disappearance, so Delaney is on the case. This is one of the stronger books in the series, with the clues slowly coming nicely together as the reader goes along.
Deadly Editions is book six in the Scottish Bookshop Mystery. It does help to have read earlier books to have a better understanding of the cast, but the mystery stands well on its own and it would be fine for readers new to the series.
I love bookish mysteries so the fact that this one takes place in a bookstore AND features a famous book involving a treasure hunt had me intrigued. I've read several other books by Paige Shelton and always enjoyed them and this had the same easy readability that I have come to expect from her. While this wasn't necessarily slow paced it does take awhile for the story to get moving and the murder feels very off page and isn't a character I felt like I really knew. A small caveat - while this is the 6th book in the series it is the first book I've read. While I had no issue with understanding what was going on in the story I think I would have enjoyed this book a lot more if I had been more invested in the characters.
Since I didn't have the investment with the characters going in it did read a little slower for me then I think it would have if I had been following Delaney and Tom from the beginning. As well, I feel like a better knowledge of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde would have helped some of the treasure hunt. Despite that I did enjoy this read and visiting the bookshop and the different pubs was lots of fun. I'm looking forward to spending more time with Delaney and the rest of the cast.
This is the 6th book in the Scottish bookshop series. I have enjoyed reading all of them. I really like Delaney and the mysteries she gets mixed up in through her work at the bookshop. This one was fun. I’ve been to visit some of these Edinburgh pubs, in particular Deacon Brodie’s Tavern so it was fun to read a mystery centered on that and Robert Louis Stevenson’s Jekyll and Hyde book.
Take a trip to Scotland. Visit several pubs. Solve a murder mystery and go on a treasure hunt. An adorable dog, interesting characters, and a bookstore. The protagonist doesn't spend much time in the bookstore as she is busy following the clues for the treasure hunt. An entertaining education in Scottish dialog. One catches on eventually. Thanks to the publisher for providing a copy via NetGalley. I haven't read any of the previous books in this series.
Delaney, a Kansan now firmly ensconced as a bookseller in Edinburgh, is thrilled when she is one of four people invited by the eccentric Shelaigh to take part in a treasure hunt, with the prize being a first edition of Jekyll and Hyde, a book Shelaigh has been obsessed with. The clues lead the contestants through local pubs- which is especially fitting given that Delaney's hot husband Tom owns one. Then there's a murder! Solve the murder or finish the hunt? Well, our intrepid heroine and her friends do both. The mystery is just twisty enough and I found myself hunting about for info on the Jekyll and Hyde, which I haven't read in many years. I've only read one in this series but that was fine as Shelton gives good back story and the characters stand on their own. Thanks to the publisher for the ARC. A fun cozy with a terrific setting.
Two Sides to Every Coin
A Treasure hunt, dream library, and rare books; oh my! Deadly Editions is a great addition to the Scottish Bookshop Series. I love that Paige Shelton always takes Scottish history and intertwines it with a solid mystery; a real whodunit. It’s been a long time since I’ve read Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, but the fascinating facts learned during the treasure hunt sure bring back memories of reading it. What a rich and famous history Scotland has!
I always enjoy reading the Scottish Bookshop series and to be honest, anything that Paige Shelton writes. She has such a way with words and descriptions I can see every happening. Her characters have developed so well that it’s like meeting up with old friends every book. I loved this sixth installment and am looking forward to the next one! Grab a cup of hot cocoa and cookies, you’re in for a great read.
4.5 stars
This is the sixth book in the Scottish Bookshop mystery series by Paige Shelton.
Delaney is offered the opportunity to acquire a first edition of Robert Louis Stevenson’s book The Strange Case of Dr. Jeckyl and Mr Hyde. This invitation leads to a scavenger hunt and then the lady conducting the festivities goes missing.
This book gives you a double whammy. You get to follow the mystery and the solving of it while following the characters following the clues left in the scavenger hunt. This made the book doubly exciting.
I really enjoyed following Paige around during this mystery. I kind of had that whole feeling of Clue the Movie and couldn’t get enough of this clever tale. Just one fun read.
If you like cozy mysteries, definitely check this one out. You won’t be disappointed.
I received this as an ARC (Advanced Reader Copy) in return for an honest review. I thank NetGalley, the publisher and the author for allowing me to read this title.
I received a free e-copy of this novel from NetGAlley in exchange for my honest opinion.
I have not read a novel by Paige Shelton before, and this particular one was number 6 in the Scottish Bookshop Mystery series. Delaney Nichols, bookseller, has been invited on a treasure hunt through Edinburgh insearch of a valuable edition of The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson. The hunt is the idea of socialite Shelagh O'Connor, who has a most intersting and checkered past surrounding the novel. After the first meeting of the treasdure hunters, a crime spree begins that connects to SHelagh and her past misdeeds. Soon after that is the murder of a man that may or may not be connected to SHelagh. Now Delaney must decide if searching for the valuable book is truly worth her life as it becomes clear that she is within someone's sights.
I enjoyed this novel. Delaney was practical and down to earth. She never went anywhere with backup and/or letting enough people know what she was doing. I enjoyed the fact that she didn't have an "archnemesis" like some mysteries usually have. And I enjoyed the fact that she was an AMerican but in love with her new home in Edinburgh. I read too many mystery novels in Cape Cod or thereabouts that this location was new and different.
I also enjoyed the use of Edinburgh's pubs. That was truly inspired, to show the various locales. I would have liked a little more history with the pubs to be incorporated into the hunt. it basically felt like a casual glance.
Overall I rate this 4 out of 5 stars.
Upon realizing that this is in fact the 6th book in the series I thought I should go back and start from the beginning to get to know the characters better... I kind of wish I hadn’t. As I didn’t like the first book at all I didn’t end up being a fan of this book. I couldn’t really get into it because I just don’t like Delaney and as she’s the main character and who we follow through her misadventures it’s a bit of a problem. A quick read but it just wasn’t for me.
Very disappointed book wouldn’t open so I was not able to review it. Net gallery needs to check their ways of downloading etc. it’s not fAIR BECAUSE IT COUNT AGAINST YOUR REVIEWS
This was a fun mystery. First, it takes place in Edinburgh and involves a scavenger hunt. Delaney works at the Cracked Spine Bookstore. In addition to their normal stock, they are also known for specialized or antique books. Delaney receives a mysterious invitation to a meeting regarding a treasure hunt. The prize is a whole collection of rare books that are currently owned by an eccentric recluse who is the one hosting the treasure hunt.
In the process of the hunt, Shelaigh (the recluse) disappears and a man is killed. Delaney is on the hunt for the treasure and the murder.
This was enjoyable. I liked reading about Edinburgh and the different sites. The story moved along at a fast clip and kept me guessing.
When a messenger delivers an invitation to Delaney at the Cracked Spine bookshop she's intrigued. She's invited to meet with a book collector who has some skeletons in her closet, a penchant for Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde, and lots of books in her library. At the meeting there are three others and they are challenged to a treasure hunt. The first one to find the treasure will inherit the collector's library upon her death. The hunt begins in a pub where the first clue awaits. The action is fast-paced and lots of fun despite a murder and kidnapping. This is the sixth title in a charming series set in Edinburgh and lots of the city's history is woven into the plots.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for an electronic copy to read and review.
The latest installment of the Scottish Bookshop Mystery series sees the return of Delaney and the crew. Working together they venture to find a valuable book and a missing person.
The book is a quick read. I like learning more about Edinburgh as Delaney travels around the city. I do find some of the story to be repetitive, but it is still enjoyable.
Delaney and several other booksellers are sent on a treasure hunt through Edinburgh, looking for a very special book. The prize? The entire library of an eccentric, philanthropic socialite. The hunt turns out to be more dangerous than anyone imagined, and Delaney and her friends begin to have doubts about the other treasure hunters – and their hostess.
This is the sixth book in the Scottish Bookshop series, which seems to get better with every book. I would love to spend some time at The Cracked Spine, exploring the shop and the warehouse, and getting to know the regular characters in the series. Then of course, there's Edinburgh itself, and I enjoy the way each book introduces the reader to different parts of the city. If I ever get to visit, I'll have a handy list of places I want to check out :) The mystery in this book was well done, with several possible suspects to consider. While I suspected the culprit relatively early on, I wasn't certain my suspicions were correct until a couple of events that occurred just before the reveal in the story. I look forward to reading the next book in this series.
There are so many things in this book that just check all of my boxes: cozy mystery? yes. Scotland? yes. Classic literature? yes. Convoluted treasure hunt? yes. Love, love, love. The Scottish Bookshop series has quickly become one of my favorites, and this was no exception. I did find the ending a bit rushed-- I wish there was more basking in the danger then solving the mystery--, but overall a great read.
I could not put this book down! One night I accidentally stayed up until 3 am, it was that good. I have only read some of the books in this series and that was not a problem. Read this, you’ll like it!
I received a copy of this book in exchange for a review from Net Galley. Thank you for the opportunity to read this lovely book in exchange for a review.
I was so excited to receive this arc copy. Paige Shelton is a very talented author. I enjoy her writing style. I would recommend her series to anyone who enjoys a good cozy mystery. I love that the series is set in Scotland (someday I hope to visit!), and the plot was engaging.
Such a good book on many levels: unique storyline, lots of caring, bright characters and interesting setting. Looking forward to future books in this series. Thanks to #NetGalley and #DeadlyEditions for advanced digital copy.
