I thought I would enjoy this, but it was meh, I did not finish. I thought I would enjoy this, but it was meh, I did not finish.
The Keepers is the second book in Burton's Mace Reid K-9 Mystery series. I was interested in this series because I love books about dogs and I read the first book. I enjoyed this one as well. Another crime novel that has Mace and his bunch of cadaver dogs trying to help solve mysterious deaths. His dogs have great skills but his golden retriever Vira has something more and he's learning how to use it to assist in his work. As with the first book this one moves a lightning pace and you want to keep turning to read the next page. I'm looking forward to reading next book in this series. I love these dogs and how heroic they are!
Book #2 in this excellent series. It can easily be read and enjoyed as a stand alone but I've read both and they are both excellent books with original story lines and characters.
THE KEEPERS is the group name for the trained dogs raised and handled by Mace Reid. His dogs find cadavers, helping law enforcement personnel with recovery and crime scene investigation. Jeffrey Burton obviously conducted his background research, as he gets the details right every time. His characters include people and dogs and seem like old friends when you meet them. The series so far has been very good.
Another engaging book from this author. Well researched and engaging story line. I look forward to reading more books from Burton!
I love this book! You have dogs, detectives, and fun and you can’t go wrong. Thanks for the great book and I can’t wait for the next book to come out!
After enjoying The Finders, I was happy to read its follow up, The Finders. Yes, it's about cadaver dogs, or about Mace Reid (the man that trains them), but the main focus is on the action and the mysteries surrounding the murders. The pacing is fast and it reads like a good thriller does: you experience it like you would a movie.
The Keepers by Jeffrey B. Burton is book two in his Mace Reid K-9 Mystery series. This series features dog handler, Mace Reid, and his golden retriever cadaver dog, Vira.
Mace and his dogs closed their first case. Unfortunately for Mace, there’s another case, and it’s a doozy.
Jeffrey B. Burton strikes the right tone with his second installment to the series. He maintains the series continuity, while making this book a standalone. The dialogue is fresh. He smartly uses the narrative to invoke humor. The plot is interesting with compelling twists and is successfully executed. The dogs add the extra something every good novel needs. The Keepers is an intriguing read that I rate 5 out of 5 stars. I highly recommend it to all readers of mystery/suspense.
My thanks to St. Martin’s Press, Minotaur Books, and NetGalley for the opportunity to read an advance copy of this book. However the opinions expressed in this review are 100% mine and mine alone.
I am a huge fan of the Jeffrey Burton books. I just love that he incorporates the dogs with the detectives to solve the crime. Not too scary where I feel like I'm going to freak out, but the perfect amount of intense. LOVE these!
This was another good mystery from the author of The Finders, which I enjoyed very much. I think having Mace and his cadaver dog as main characters is a unique way to tell a story. This can be read a standalone story. It's a great series for fans of crime drama/mystery.
If you have a dog or you're a dog lover who also loves to read, this is a great addition to your collection!
I loved this book! The Keepers by Jeffrey B. Burton is the second book in The Mace Reid K-9 Mystery series. It can be read as a stand alone but do yourself a favor and go back and read the first novel in this series, The Finders.
Mace trains cadaver dogs and works with law enforcement. Sometimes the cases hit a little too close to home but with his faithful dogs and friends he will prevail.
I love a dog. He does nothing for political reasons. - Will Rogers
Mace Reid and his talented dogs are back in another tale in a favorite K-9 series of mine. Mace has five dogs but the most talented (even spookily talented) is Vira, a human cadaver detecting dog.
Teamed with Chicago Police Officer Kippy Gimm and her police partner, Mace and golden retriever Vira search Washington Park for a body and this ends up spiraling into a political corruption case that has spread into the highest reaches of local government.
I highly recommend this book and this series. I am now off to read book three THE LOST.
I received this advanced reading copy from Minotaur Books through Net Galley in the hopes that I would read it and leave an unbiased review.
The Keepers is the second book in Burton's Mace Reid K-9 Mystery series. I was extremely interested in this series because I love books about dogs, especially when they are the heroes. And in both books in this series, Burton shows just how bad-a@# dogs can be! I will say that personally, I liked the first book better. Yet having said that, this story is action packed and fast paced as well. And of course, the dogs are the star of the show! Even though I liked the first book better, I'm excited to read the next book and see where this series goes.
My thanks to the author, St. Martin's Press and Minatour Books and netgalley for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Hey folks, daddy Steve here. Not too long ago someone asked Malcolm if his daddy still read doggiebooks because it had been a long while since he’s posted a book report. Oh, I’ve not stopped reading, far from it, and yes, I’m still reading doggiebooks, almost exclusively! It’s just that I got a little behind on my reporting in the Fall, then starting with the new year Malcolm and I started adding more walks to our routine. Like right after dinner we now take a walk instead of me sitting on the couch. The good news with that is that I usually listen to an audiobook while we walk, something I don’t like doing while we run. Just to tell you, I keep track of what I’ve read and I have close to 40, yes forty, doggiebooks I’d like to report to you.
Let’s start with a first one, The Keepers by Jeffrey B. Burton. This is the second book in the Mace Reid K-9 Mystery series. I reviewed his first book, The Finders, last year.
Lots of love for this series, its sense of humor that reminds me a little of David Rosenfelt’s Andy Carpenter series, but with a lot more dogs in it. The main character Mason Reid is a dog trainer and has a whole crew of doggies and they all have their own personality.
I didn’t like the whole corruption in the city story as I’d liked the story of the first book but otherwise it’s a recommended read for any dog lover. Lots of action and no dog dies. 😉
Huge thanks to NetGalley who provided a free eBook advanced reader copy (the book as since been released and is available to buy right now) in exchange for my honest review. This is as honest as it gets...

I really liked this one! It was a great addition to the series. I enjoy books with rescue/cadaver dogs in them, so this series is right up my alley. Can't wait for the next one!
I didn't enjoy this second installment of the Mace Reid series as much as the first but it was still a good read. The characters are wonderful. The relationship of Mace with his pack of search and rescue dogs is a joy. Elvira is amazing. she makes the books worthwhile. His relationship with Officer Kippy Grimm is also nice to behold and shows signs of developing. This book is more political in nature, dealing with mobsters and police corruption. There are several murders and a couple of plot lines that are confusing at first but once they come together the book moves faster to a satisfying conclusion. I received a copy of this book from netGalley but this is my honest review. I plan to continue reading this series hopefully for quite a while.
Wow, so good! This is the second book of the series, Mace Reid and his dogs are having more tense journey to solve a mystery from a corrupt man.
This is the second installment of the Mace Reid K-9 Mysteries series. The story was a little bit slow-burned for several chapters, but after that the plot changed very quickly into : "bang! run! and hide!" atmosphere.
Very engaging, gives a deeper look to the Chicago area and illustrates how street gangs work around the area (it scared me because I love Chicago even though I only visited the city once). I admire how the relationship between MC and his dogs is so close and so real (we don't deserve dogs, of course). I can’t wait for the third book!
Thank you St. Martin Press and NetGalley for the digital copy of this book.
Thank you Netgalley for the advance reader copy of The Keepers by Jeffrey B. Burton in exchange for an honest review. This was the second book in the series and after reading the first one I was very excited to read the sequel. I loved the character Mace and his brood of pups. A male dog named Sue who has as much personality as his name suggests, Vira the extremely intuitive scent DNA reader and the others too. We get to know the characters more in this book and see as they are brought on another adventure solving a mystery. I am still so interested in getting into the field of human recovery dogs. I've never even had a dog and always wanted one, and with my Masters in Justice Studies, thought this would be a great combination.
A quick read - maybe good for a summer mystery. It's a politically motivated crime with lots of upper local power-people involved so the mystery is how high up the power ladder does the corruption go. Again, Mace and Kippy find themselves in severe danger and, then Vira and the other dogs come to the rescue. Well written, good characters, Vira is a great dog character. I enjoy this series.....the dog interactions are great!
Worth reading.
Thanks to Net Galley for this book.
Mason “Mace” Reid is a Chicago-based dog-handler who specializes in training cadaver dogs. He calls his pack The Finders and one of his dogs, Golden Retriever Vira, not only can seek out bodies, she is often able to identify perpetrators as well. In this second book in the Mace Reid K-9 Mystery series, Mace and his dog are called to a crime scene in the early morning hours. What they find will lead them to corruption and a political conspiracy.
The Keepers is a fast-paced story with great characters and, of course, dogs. The plot is interesting and the author has created two characters (Mace and Officer Kippy Grimm) who are smart, resilient, and loyal. Mace is a good guy. His dogs are good dogs. And The Keepers is a dog-gone good book!
I so enjoy this series!
Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for providing a copy of this book for review.
Prior to reading this one, I didn't realize it is a sequel. Can't wait to read the first! The author did a great job telling the story.
