I appreciated how this was an in-depth picture of Shele's life and more than just a retelling of the crime. The book outlines the family dynamic and the horrific events that occurred.
A true crime novel centered around the murder of Shele Danishevsky. I had never heard of this murder and this case was riveting. I like that it started from the beginning and included all of the trial and family reaction to it. It was like listening to a podcast. Very engaging.!
Wow. Another true crime book that was so hard to read and even harder to put down. This book is about the life and death of Shele Danishefsky and her husband Ron. I think the book was well researched and written. I hadn't heard of this case so I was googling things as I went along. There's even a Dateline episode I'm going to watch.
This story was so incredibly heartbreaking. The things Ron did to his parents, to Shele and to their daughter is disgusting. I don't know how he sleeps at night. Just when I thought the story couldn't get any worse, it did. It was tough at times. I could go on about this book, but I think its something you just have to witness for yourself. If you are a fan of true crime, I highly suggest this book. Just know, it can be a difficult read at times.
Thank you to NetGalley and, St Martin's Press for the copy of the book.
I really enjoyed this book and didn’t realize it was a true story. It was interesting to read. I would definitely recommend this book!
Thank you so much to NetGalley, the authors, and St. Martin's Press for a free e-book of At Any Cost in exchange for my honest review.
This is just such a tragic story. A woman is found dead in the bathtub. Her husband is suspected of the act. I am not going to say any more so that I don't slip with spoilers. It's hard to say that I enjoyed this difficult book, but it's so extremely well researched and well written that I definitely did enjoy it. I have to say I was well and truly hooked from the very beginning. Highly recommended.
At All Cost: A Father’s Betrayal, a Wife’s Murder, and a Ten-Year War for Justice by Rebecca Rosenberg is a 2021 St. Martin’s Press publication.
This is a true crime book centered around the mysterious death of Shele Danishefsky who was found dead in her bathtub. Eventually, her death was ruled a homicide and her husband Rod would become the primary suspect.
From that point on, Rob’s family and Shele’s, would embark on a decade long battle- one side, hoping to bring Rob to justice, the other to prove his innocence and keep custody of his children.
The evidence points to murder, and not an accident as the defense claimed. Beyond that, there is a strong circumstantial case, especially since Shele was very well off at the time of her death.
This book takes the reader through the entirety of the case, all the way up to the trial and the jury’s verdict, and the reactions of the two families in the aftermath.
This case was riveting. The author holds nothing back, making it seem like the reader is right there on the scene, sitting in the courtroom, or investigating the evidence. It’s rough at times, very heartbreaking, especially as the children were pulled and pushed, in a grueling custody battle.
Rod is a real piece of work, and despite my true crime affinity, which has desensitized me just a bit, it still left me shaking my head in disbelief.
The author did a fantastic job with the material, keeping it organized, and moving along, examining all the angles, the two sides of the story- but the trial passages were the most absorbing.
Overall, this was another decade long saga, and an incredible case. The book well-written, one true crime fans will want to check out.
At Any Cost by Rebecca Rosenberg
This True Crime story pulled me in right away. Shele Danishefsky a smart intelligent young lady who lacks confidence in herself. She had a deformity on her skin which left her with no self confidence. She begins to rise in her professional status to become a very good financial advisor on wall street. She eventually meets the handsome Rod Colvin. She becomes smitten with him and they soon get married. They end up have two kids Anna and Myles.
Then trouble fell upon the couple Rod lack to get his stuff together to become a provider for the family so Shele became the primary bread winner. Rod wanted to be a backgammon player. The marriage was beginning to suffer greatly and this is when the major problems began.
The story kept me engaged and it was really good researched with lots of detail. Some of the things that Rod did was deplorable and the kids became pawns in a hot messy divorce. I really felt for the kids and still do the damage that was inflicted on them is just terrible.
I was reading late into the night this is how engaged I was in this story. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes true crime.
I want to thank Netgalley and St Martin's Press for a free copy of this book for an honest review.
A tragic real life story that has been well-researched and well-summarized in this book. Even the trial section, where most books drag on and on, was an engaging read.
Thank you to Net Galley for the advance reader copy of this true crime book.
The authors do a great job telling this fabulous horrible story. Through horrible schemes the murder, marriage/ divorce story are told with a great voice. Loved the portrayal of the killer and his willingness to throw away everything a normal person would covet.
At Any Cost: A Father's Betrayal, a Wife's Murder, and a Ten-Year War for Justice was a fascinating read. I give it four stars.
It's New Years Eve 2009, and Shele Danishefsky's lifeless body has been found in the bathtub of her Upper West Side apartment by her young daughter. What at first presents as a tragic accident, turns more sinister when police begin to investigate. Signs quickly start to point to Rod Covin, Shele's husband with whom she was in the midst of a brutal divorce and intense custody battle. While he is definitely guilty of infidelity and a backgammon gambling addiction, is he also guilty of something as sinister as murder? He relied heavily on her financially, and shortly before her untimely death, Shele planned to take Rod out of her will.
I was so glad I stumbled across this book. I really like true crime, and I was not familiar with this case prior to reading. The authors do an incredible job at presenting the timeline of events, from Shele and Rod meeting, up through the jury's verdict being read at the murder trial. At Any Cost definitely made me want to look more into the case.
Very detailed, almost exhaustively so (do I need to know the kid's tuition?) but you really did get a sense of the world all these people lived in and what their "normal" was. I thought it was pretty clear the author had some journalism background which I prefer for true crime, some are sort of sloppy and almost fanfiction-y but this one was very solid and not super sensational.
In this unbelievable true story, Rebecca Rosenberg and Selim Al tell the story of the murder through the next 10 years, when her murderer is finally brought to justice. This book reads more like a fictional mystery than true crime, so enjoy!
At Any Cost: A Father's Betrayal, a Wife's Murder, and a Ten-Year War for Justice is a non-fiction true crime book. This book tells the story of Shele, a wealthy, successful, mother of two children who was found murdered on New Years Eve, 2009 and the very long case it took to bring her murderer to justice. This is such a gut-wrenching book but very well told. I found myself unable to step away because I was so engrossed in this case. I won't say too much about this one as to not spoil it for others. I am glad I went into this book "blind" as I had not even heard of this case before the book. A definite read for those who enjoy true crime!
Thank you to Netgalley and St. Martin's Press for the e-ARC of this book in exchange for my honest review.
It's a little bit like Dirty John, where you know the guy is a scuzzball and are cringing the entire time. I wanted to know SO much more about the Rabbi who wasn't a Rabbi at all.
This true crime story shows how Shelle was murdered and then had to wait 9 years before her family got any closure. What’s really interesting is the trial because it almost seems like the jury were going to find the killer not guilty. Fortunately, that’s not what happened.
A quick note: although this is true crime and has gore where it’s appropriate, the authors didn’t go over the top with it.
This book is amazing and heartbreaking. The story that is told is absolutely horrid. However the way it was written broke it down in digestible pieces rather than just all around bad news. I applaud the amount of research that went into this book as well.
An amazing true crime book, well written and provides the reader with so much detail about the case. I had never heard about this case before even though I'm an avid true crime reader and podcast listener. So glad I found this book. Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for an ARC.
At Any Cost is a great read for True Crime story fans. I follow a lot of true crime via podcast, documentary and books but somehow was totally unaware of the tragic death of this young mother Shele. Maybe because it took about 10 years to bring charges against her husband who was ultimately convicted. This work contains lots of detail and comments by those who knew both in this couple, and follows the investigation through the trial and verdict. Sadly there were young children involved to live with this trauma to this day. It is quite readable and highly recommended. An advance copy was made available for my review via NetGalley without any obligation for positive feedback.
There's nothing like a true crime novel to get your emotions running hot and your blood boiling! I could barely get through this story about the evil Rod Covlin and what he did to destroy an entire family with his greed and malicious activities.
It was so clear, probably because it was already a fact that he'd been found guilty, that he had murdered his wife, Shele Danishfsky. If that wasn't bad enough, he then completely destroyed the lives of his own children by his selfish actions in keeping them from Shele's entire family and devastating the relationship his children had with the grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins. Reading this filled me with rage that a man like Rod could get away with all the hideous things that he did, wanted to do, and planned to do.
A contentious divorce is the ugliest thing on earth -- reducing people to their basest levels and watching them act out unbelievable scenarios. The two children, Anna and Myles, were pawns in a war between their parents and extended families, and I can see how they would be left so overwhelmed and confused about whom to believe and whom to love. I did find it very surprising that neither child ever testified in court or spoke to the authors so who knows what they really think.
I love a good courtroom scene and all the legal drama, but the personal anguish that came through the pages -- the suffering of Shele's family -- was hard to bear. I am always surprised, however, by the depth of loyalty that can be displayed even for the most depraved. How Rod's parents could support him after all that he did to them. How Anna and Myles could have a positive thought in their heads about their father. This mystifies me. How many lies can someone swallow -- I guess as many as they need to in order to preserve the notion that their son and their father are really not monsters. Hearing about all the things that Rod said and did and thought through the years made me sick to my stomach. I was so worried that justice would not prevail. But, then again, as in the case of any crime such as this, the result does not undue the suffering or bring back the dead.
It took 10 years for Rod Covlin to be held accountable for what he did. So many things went wrong from the discovery of Shele's body to the trial where her killer was finally given his just due. I loved reading the details of this story with all the background information and appreciate the work and research that the authors did to bring this book to publication.
Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for this e-book ARC to read, review, and recommend to all true crime fans everywhere.
