I have not read this author or series before, but as a librarian I'm always drawn to cozies in this theme! Loved the characters and the story. Will recommend to my cozy-loving customers!
I don't think you can really go wrong when your mystery includes both cats and libraries, but as a librarian with two cats, I may be a little biased. The characters are charming, each in their own way and the story is told smoothly. This was my first read from this author and I enjoyed it enough to seek out others.
Great entertaining Book. A Young liberian helps to solve some murder. Very sympathetic persona, a cat, sometimes grumpy and love. All this makes the Book Funk to read.
This is a great cozy series and I loved visiting with the colorful characters again. The mystery was good and of course Eddie the cat was in the story also.
Many thanks to Berkley Publishing Group and to NetGalley for providing me with a galley in exchange for my honest opinion.
This is such a fun series, and I had a great time with this cozy mystery. I loved the plot, the twists and turns, and the characters! I love the Bookmobile theme, and I recommend this series to all my book loving friends.
Returning from their last stop in the bookmobile, Minnie, her cat Eddie and part time assistant Julia come across a body in the road. They assume it was a hit and run, but later discover the man was murdered.
Later on, a woman is found murdered - the only thing linking the two is the bicycling club they belong to. Minnie begins her investigation aided by Tabitha Inwood, the wife of one of the detectives on the case.
Along with the murder investigation, Minnie is dealing with expanding the bookmobile program and moving into her fiancé's house.
A delightful addition to the series - enjoyed catching up with Minnie and her friends.
Hard to believe we've been on the bookmobile with librarian Minnie and Eddie nine times already. "Checking Out Crime" is the latest Bookmobile Cat mystery by Laurie Cass. This time out, they run into, almost literally, a member of the local biking club, who is dead in the road. Minnie starts to sleuth, and soon has a second biker's death to investigate. She also has her hands full trying to get her future home in order so that she and her fiancé can get married before the snow flies. Since it's October, and she's in Michigan, time's running out.
Eddie, as usual, helps her find clues, and steers her down the right (bike) path. Minnie also has a new sleuthing buddy, who I hope will be in future installments, as she's a great addition to the series.
I'll frankly admit that Minnie's emotional outbursts in the last couple of books had begun to grate a bit. She's still gets a bit feisty in this one, and excuses it by saying it's "normal" behavior, but it was much toned down in this story.
The story itself was good, and I enjoy how Minnie interacts with her friends, family, and the community. She's very much an integral part of the town of Chilson's fabric, and is more of a liaison than a busybody.
The plot? Well, the motive for the murders was a bit far-fetched, and unsatisfying, but the characters balanced out the story and this was an enjoyable read.
I received an advance copy from NetGalley and Berkley Publishing Group in exchange for my honest review.
I really enjoyed this book. I am a huge fan of cozy mysteries and this totally fit the bill. The author's writing style caught me right away and I could not put the book down. I hated to see it end. I can't wait to read more frim this writer
I hope you check out Cbecking out Crime by Laurie Cass and get ready for a fun read.
Another cute and cozy mystery. Minnie, along with the local sheriffs, Julia, and Tabitha investigate the murders of 2 people. With plenty of quirky secondary characters and suspects, Minnie and her sidekick Eddie the cat figures out who is committing the crimes and why.
This is a book in a series but you don’t have to read the previous ones to enjoy this book. Thanks to NetGalley and Berkley books for the arc.
This is a good solid cozy mystery series. I highly suggest you read them in order.
It has a good premise and whodunit, however, it wasn’t my favourite in the series but it was still a solid offering.
I voluntarily reviewed an advance reader copy of this book.
This is my favorite bookmobile themed mystery. I like Minnie and Eddie. Minnie has settled in nicely to the town and has a number of friends. The mystery kept me guessing.
Thank you to the author, publisher and NetGalley for my eARC in exchange for an honest review.
Checking Out Crime is the perfect cozy.
Set in autumn in Upper Michigan, Minnie the librarian is driving the bookmobile when she discovers a dead body in the middle of nowhere. Together with her absolutely lovely friends and townsfolk (and the companionship of her very vocal cat, Eddie), she launches an investigation that takes her right into the crosshairs of a killer.
The bookmobile brought back amazing childhood memories, the bike rides made my legs ache in sympathy, the elaborate meals made my mouth water, and Eddie the cat had me in stiches. The mystery was always at the forefront and came to a very satisfying conclusion after investigating a variety of potential suspects and motives. All of the subplots were neatly resolved with a flourish.
I highly recommend Checking Out Crime for anyone in need of a safe vacation with new friends (and don’t we all need that???)
Minnie is a librarian in Michigan, and drives the local bookmobile with the assistance of her cat, Eddie. When two locals are found murdered, Minnie and her friends decide to investigate, and come up with a list of suspects. Both victims were members of a local cycling club, so Minnie joins the group to question some of the riders. I found the motive for the murder to be a bit farfetched, but a likable choice for fans of cat cozy mysteries. Thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for the ARC.
I love this series, but felt like the personal life of Minnie needed to move along a little faster. I understand why it was dragged out through this book, but it was a little much. I still love the characters and want to know what is happening in their lives, as well as enjoying the mystery part of the book. Looking forward to the next chapter of Minnie's and Rafe's life.
The ninth installment in the Bookmobile Cat mystery series. Minnie Hamilton is a librarian along with her rescue cat Eddie drives her bookmobile in Chilson Michigan to grateful patrons who enjoy books and cats. When Minnie and her sister Julia along with Eddie are nearly run off the road by a speeding vehicle and avoid running over the dead body of a cyclist who appears to be the victim of a hit and run. Later Minnie learns this is murder and begins to assist in the investigation. She is worried over where she is going to live as Rafe her fiancée is still working on the house and she is not going to live on her houseboat in the winter. The house it is! I love the setting as I live in Michigan and continue to enjoy this series. The mystery is solid and keeps you engaged with the culprit totally unexpected. Good series and I look forward to the next installment.
I enjoy this series and have read all of them. This one seemed a little far-fetched though. I think that friendship between Minnie and Tabitha is nice but way too convenient in how quickly it happened. I also think that Minnie and Tabitha could almost be charged with stalking in their endless pursuit of some of the suspects. Some parts of the story wrapped up way too nearly such as her co-worker’s wedding. This isn’t my favorite in the series but I will give it another chance, Hopefully once Minnie moves to Rafe’s house, the storylines won’t change to much.

Nice sleuthing and more.
On the back road in the dark in the converted school bus bookmobile Minnie and her sister are talking when a car nearly hits them head on while driving at speed. Shortly thereafter they come upon a man lying in the road and try to resuscitate him. After the sheriff's deputy came they found the man's bicycle and helmet but it way days later that they found out it was murder and needed to sleuth. Add in a library cat with an attitude, an impending move from her houseboat to her fiance's house in mid renovation, deciding on a set of rings, and library politics to keep anyone's interest from beginning to end.
I requested and received a free ebook copy from Berkley Publishing Group via NetGalley. Thank you!
Checking Out Crime by Laurie Cass (A Bookmobile Cat Mystery #9) 5 stars or 5 paws
Can you be a victim of your own success? Minnie Hamilton and the Library bookmobile may be too successful, because there are patrons that are asking for more stops. After a very long day, Minnie and her part-time assistant Julia are driving back home, when a car nearly forces them off the road. After avoiding collision, Minnie nearly runs over a body on the road. Minnie tries to perform CPR, but the victim is already dead. This sets up a story that will have more dead bodies, mysterious motives and several suspects. In the midst of these events, Minnie will also have to deal with a change of abode (finally moving in with her fiancee) and additional work pressure.
This is the next book in this series following 2020 "Gone with the Whisker". It is always great to visit this world and I enjoy my annual visit. The plot had a few twists and turns that I didn't expect. I suspected the killer about 3/4 into the book. As always the dialogue between Minnie and Eddie, her cat was a fun part of the book. What Eddie can say with a "Mrrr" is extraordinary. This series just keeps getting better and better and I hope the wedding will happen in the next book.
Thank you Netgalley and Berkeley Publishing Group for this ARC.
Set in Michigan. Minnie and her cat Eddie, are coming back from a late stop in the dark when Minnie almost runs over a body in the middle of the road. When the man's bicycle is found in the ditch, Minnie not only needs to find out who he is, but does the local bike club contain a murderer? All this and her boss is expecting the bookmobile to be out longer hours and make more stops because the people love it - and Minnie and Eddie. A fun story with twists and turns and dark roads.
I enjoyed this book. It has great characters including a great cat Eddie. It was good catching up with their lives. The mystery is interesting and the bad guy unexpected, especially the reason the the killings. The middle does get a little slow but overall it's a fast read. CheckingOutCrime #NetGalley
