As much as I tried, I just couldn't get into this one. Unfortunately it wasn't for me. Perhaps I'll try picking it up again at a later time
Thank you NetGalley for the opportunity to read to this book!
I enjoyed this one and I highly recommend.
I enjoyed this slow-burn mystery about a storm that took lives years previously and a man named Kieran who came back to help his mother and father who has dementia. While there a young woman was murdered and the mystery takes Kieran and others back in time and memories of the storm and the lives it previously took...if you read it though, expect twists and turns!
I listened to the audiobook and also read the ebook so I was switching back and forth. I hate to say it, but I didn't care for the audio as much as just reading the ebook. The narrator this time didn't help pique my interest in the story as so many narrators often do because of their voice inflections and helping to set the pace of the story, etc. I think if I were to recommend this book, I would recommend it but not the audiobook edition, but that's just my personal bias.
Jane Harper is a auto-buy author for me since the beginning of her career and I have t say I a not ashamed to say how much this book did to me emotionally. I was a WRECK! I was on the edge of my seat the entire time with the author speaking directly to me through the narrator.
The narrator more than captivated me and told a story that I never could have imagined doing the damage to my brain that it did. IN A GOOD WAY BY ALL MEANS!
Setting, secrets, and suspense make this one a must read! The narrator made this even more enjoyable!
I have tried multiple times to dive into this book. I have multiple copies and adore Jane Harper, but this may not be the season in life to read another 'slow burn' of a book. I love her writing but I am going to have to come back to this book when I can focus more on the setup. The setup seems to take up more time than the actual plot...
I adore the audiobook narrator, Stephen Shanahan. I ADORE HIM! Such a soothing voice and accent!!!
"The Survivors" by Jane Harper just wasn't my cup of tea. It's a rather slow going story and didn't really capture my attention. The narrator was okay.
I tried. I really did, but this one is too slow and the narration falls short. On a positive note, I liked the setting - it made me long for the beach, but I needed much more from a crime novel. I guess it was the lack of connection, but I never got invested in the characters or the crime.
I enjoyed this book, but not as much as others by Jane Harper. The characters were well developed and I cared about them. The story did not capture me as much as others.
Off the bat, I knew I was going to like this narrator. For most audiobooks, you can tell if you can take it or not, and thank you to them because it helped this book. If you are going to read this book then I would recommend listening to it.
As much as I was loving the narrator, this book was just so slow. In the first three chapters, I was like okay slow start no worries, but I ended up DNF this book. I just could not get into it, and the storyline just was not catching my attention. It had some potential, but unfortunately, after 10 chapters I just couldn't read anymore.
The Survivors by Jane Harper is a story of reckless mistakes that yielded devastating consequences that linger on for years. When a body washes up on shore, long-held secrets are affirmed anew and questions are asked. This book was not bad or good, it was the middle of the road for me. The characters were fully realized and the mystery was a little predictable but still a good, solid book with great writing.
I received a review copy of this book from the publisher through NetGalley for my honest review. The opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
This started off slow for me but once it took off, it really took off! The mystery sucked me in and it shows how one single mistake can stay with you for life.
Australian author Jane Harper set her 4th book, The Survivors, on the Tasmanian coast. Kiernan Elliott grew up there and has returned with his young family to help his mother prepare to move. Kieran’s father has Alzheimer’s and needs better care but it’s difficult for his mother not only because her husband keeps trying to help by packing the garbage, but because Kieran’s brother Finn died in a storm years ago. She doesn’t want to leave all her memories behind. People blame Kieran for his brother’s death (as he does himself) because Finn was out searching for Kieran.
When the body of a young woman is found on the beach, long buried emotions come to the surface and tempers flare among the locals. Many in town recall Finn’s death and the disappearance of a 14 year old local girl at the same time. The old mystery is brought out again and this time, Kieran gets to the bottom of it.
While the book had a slow beginning, it picked up pace and offered a satisfying conclusion, tying up all the loose ends. The setting plays such a large role in the book it can almost be considered another character. Narrator and actor Stephen Shanahan has worked with Jane Harper’s books in the past.
Recommended for mystery lovers.
i received an advanced digital copy of this audiobook. Thanks to the author, publisher and NetGalley.com for the opportunity to read and review. The opinions expressed in this review are my own.
Jane Harper is quickly becoming one of my favorite crime authors. The Survivors is everything that a great crime novel should be. Expertly written with great character development. Should be read in one setting, so clear your calendar!
Highly recommended reading.
5 out of 5 stars.
This wasn't a book for me or maybe just the audio version. DNF at 25%
Maybe I'll try to read the book myself at one point but the audio just didn't catch my interest
Jane Harper rarely disappoints! I love a good crime story and right from the beginning of the story I was hooked. Kieran Elliot’s life changed one day after a tragic accident. It shook the town and it shook all those involved. Kieran brings his family back to the small coastal town he grew up in and all the memories come back..His parents seem to be struggling, his brother is missing and a body is found on the beach.. all of this seems to be too much for Kieran. He can’t make heads or tails from the past tragedy and this new one shocks him to the core. He relies heavily on his wife and he starts to ask questions and get answers he isn’t prepared for. Harper is excellent at piecing a story together and giving the reader an ending you can’t forget. Stephen Shanahan does a great job narrating, as usual. I am thankful to Netgalley & Jane Harper & Macmillan Audio, for my copy for an honest review. It was my pleasure to listen and review.
The Survivors by Jane Harper
A special thanks to Macmillan Audio and NetGalley for this arc. I voluntarily read and review book thoughts and opinions are my own.
Any book that keeps me guessing until 90% is definitely high on my list!
Secrets in a small town never stay secret forever. Kieran Elliott returns to his childhood home with his girlfriend and baby to the small coastal community in Tasmania. He’s come home to help his mom pack up the house and move because his father’s dementia has become severe. What he wasn’t expecting there to be a body discovered on the beach that threatens to expose secrets that has been cut from when his brother Finn died 12 years prior.
There are two simultaneous timelines in this book the past when his brother was killed and his accident and the current time with the new death.
Can they be connected? Is somebody in the small town killing people 12 years apart? What about the missing girl from 12 years ago whose body was never found! So many good question and you only get the answers if you read it.
I could not get into this book in the first several chapters. The plot was slow-moving and the narrator's performance was far from captivating. Did not finish.
I was able to finally listen to this audiobook. I will say, It was not my favorite. Jane Harper is a wonderful author but I felt this particular book fell short. There are so many book out in this world, that I LOVE to find unique books. Whether, that be a plot setting or character development. So in that aspect this book just didn't make the cut. With saying this, I do not feel this one sole book does not take away from the authors reputation. I do look forward to reading Jane's future books.
This is another slow burn from Harper that morphs into a gripping story I couldn't put down. I thoroughly enjoyed this one.
