Tresniowski is a senior writer for People magazine and has also published many books, including "Vendetta", which was the basis for the movie 'Public Enemies'. This history book is the story of the search for the person who brutally killed a 10-year-old white girl in Asbury Park in 1910. Suspicion falls on a local black man and he is arrested. Others in the town do not think he is the killer and detectives are hired to solve the case. We follow their investigation, which lasts for months and involves an elaborate con on their main suspect. Interspersed in this story is the history of lynching in the USA and the story of Ida B Wells, a black journalist who did a lot of work in fighting the practice of lynching. She was also a founding member of the NAACP (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People). This fascinating story is a good recommendation for true crime fans, American history buffs, those interested in black history and fans of writers such as Eric Larson.
