A historical fiction book for me. Also, a look at two people from different walks of life. First professor Jessie Reeves is blazing her own trail especially since her parents took her around the world. It is now her turn and she is working with the Smithsonian about the lives of Native Americans and of plants from the desert. Frist wanting to draw different plants and also categorize she plans a trip into the Texas desert. Without her knowledge her Uncle a Senator requests an escort from the Texas Rangers.
Enter Ranger Benjamín Edwards, he is getting ready to leave the Rangers shortly and is assigned to escort a Professor into the desert. He was not expecting a woman. Also, not one who is fairly self-efficient. They banter back and forth and for the most begin to like each other’s company until one faithful day when they are kidnapped. They are later rescued but he is hurt severely and she treats his wounds. After this they return and then she leaves back for Washington D.C. she is later surprised when he arrives wanting her hand in marriage.
Here is a story of a powerful woman who has her own ideas in a time when women were not thought of that way. And the way the two of them worked through each other’s different thoughts was very interesting. They each could be stubborn, but each wanted to be with the other one.
I really liked Jessie since I grew up with a Grandmother who graduated college before a woman could vote and even then, she was given a certificate, not a diploma. That was 1916. Overall a good book.
This book was a very engaging story. I would put it as a historical fiction with some romance. This book really delves into the time when the Native Americans were being rounded up and put into reservations and how the young warriors of the tribes would fight back. It was centered on the Commanche tribes.
The heroine is a professor of anthropology who travels around the world with her parents. Her father is a world explorer and anthropologist that took his family everywhere he went. Her mother passed away when she was 15 years old and her father took over her education and encouraged her to write and publish. She eventually became an anthropologist for the Smithsonian and traveled wherever they sent her to record the flora and fauna that was exhibited before the sprawl of modern man destroyed the habitats. She also interviewed and documented the ways of life of the Natives of the area. In addition to the Commanche, she also had plans to document the Seminole of Florida and the Inuit of Alaska. The hero is a U.S. Ranger who was in Texas, fighting the Indians and was well experienced with the tribes since he had been captured by them when he was a very young man. He is expected to lead her into the deserts of Texas and make sure she comes back out alive. They work together as a good team.
This book was so much more than just a romance story. The supporting characters were very well written and developed along with the main characters. The one problem with this is that is was not proofed on Beta read prior to reading. There were many minor errors that need to be corrected in order for this to be a perfect book. But I liked the plot and cohesive story line. I liked the character development. This author has a good grasp of the English language and was very fluent in writing g and describing the settings and feelings. I would love to give this 5 stars, but I have to give 4.5 because of the minor editing errors. I highly recommend reading this book.
I'm always a little wary of historical American romances just because of how they deal with native Americans. In my opinion did not do a good job of it. The natives are portrayed as the bad guys because they react with violence to the "rules" of the whites. What I'm missing here is the context of the white men stealing their land and breaking their promises. This really soured the book for me. Because of that I really just couldn't get into it. The first sex scene also was felt a little weird to me. The situation just gave it such a weird context. Overall just not for me.
Interesting story: not really about a Texas Ranger as much as people walking in two worlds and trying to find their own identities. Excellent book on relationships.

I enjoyed reading this book because it was different from the usual Western type stories. This was an exciting story full of drama . The characters were interesting, all different. I learnt a lot about the customs of the Indian tribes, some horrible and horrendous. I was pleased that the book had a happy ending and recommend it to be read.
