The premise of this book was what drew me in. I enjoyed the main character, Lucy, and her talent and strong will. Unfortunately, the novel had several stereotypical love scenes that interrupted the flow of the story. I found myself flipping past them to get back to the real mysteries and motivations in the story. All in all, I enjoyed this novel, but if you aren't a fan of love scenes, you'll have to get past them.
It was a very well researched story that dealt with issues from the Victorian era that we still deal with today in some way as women. 3.5/5 stars.
Great read. I loved the writing, the characters and the storyline.
If you are looking for a good read, I recommend Joanna Lowell's The Duke Undone.
Mystery, intrigue, romance...this book has it all! The writing was just spectacular. And oh, how I rooted for these characters to overcome their demons. Flawed, yet beautiful, Anthony and Lucy are such a wonderful a pair. This one is not your typical romance; the author manages to span several genres, highlighting key issues of the day. Highly recommended!
I loved this historical romance. The Duke Undone features Lucy Coover, a strong character and talented artist who is not of the aristocracy. It’s intelligently written with good supporting characters and a decent plot. Lucy is a painting student at the Royal Academy. Her experience there reveals one way in which women were “less than” historically; her precarious housing situation shows that political corruption has always been with us.; and factors surrounding the duke’s family demonstrate destructive greed as well as an example of how inconvenient women could be “managed” to suit those holding power. All of this social commentary is nicely wrapped up in a satisfying love story. What more can we ask?
I completely agree with the previous reviewer that the jacket copy for this cover is just not very good, but I have enough trust in Berkley as a publisher and I had read and liked the author's previous historical romance enough to give it a shot. I'm so glad I did, because I really enjoyed it! I look forward to reading the stories of the other members of Lucy's art school sisterhood.
I was pleasantly surprised by this book. The summary felt disjointed and it seemed that there was just too much going on for this to make any sense. A random naked man inspiring a scandalous painting where scandals cannot happen. A dress shop on the brink of ruin. A missing sister. How many plot lines are there and will it even make sense. Don't be put off by the summary. It's all woven together pretty masterfully. There are some dark themes discussed, including the horrors of war and the resulting struggle with alcoholism. You feel for these characters and are cheering for them at the end. Highly recommend.
