Beautiful. Thank you for sharing your courageous story. Every page was deeply moving and I couldn't wait to finish.
I had difficulty getting into this book and staying engaged with it. The story is deeply personal and powerful, but for me it did not resonate.
I had a lot of trouble getting through this book in moments. Not because it is bad, but just because it shows how incredible the American Healthcare system truly is. It brings to light a lot of struggles that come with chronic illness and just how disabling it can be.
I enjoyed the writing a lot - I feel like Jamison Hill's voice makes this a dynamic read - you get both the raw emotions and thoughts, but also the 'fun' moments, the experiences.
what i can say that I really enjoyed was the conversation surrounding how detrimental it is to compare these illnesses to depression and how it discredits depression just as much, because there is no 'just' in depression, it's not just a minor issue.
This book was sent to me as an ARC on NetGalley. However all opinions are of my own.
I’m just going to start by saying that I haven’t give this book a Star rating purely because it’s based on a real story and therefore I feel like it would be wrong to give someone’s life a rating.
This story is about a young man who has everything going for him and he gets an unexpected diagnosis. His whole life becomes debilitating and he is so confused as to why his body is doing this to him. It becomes apparent that he ends up with chronic fatigue syndrome which after reading the story seems that it is quite pushed away by people in the healthcare sector. It was really sad to see how someone’s life can become after having everything that they have worked towards. I wouldn’t say that I did enjoy the story I did in parts find it quite uncomfortable and I just think that is because it’s so hard to read what people actually go through in their life. Towards the end it did definitely pick up a little bit which I was really hopeful for but it will definitely not be getting a star rating but I definitely think that it is worth a read if you’re into medical information.
Thank you Mr Hill for sharing your story. This is a powerful account of how quickly our lives can change. I went through something similar, but can't share my story as honestly and artfully as Mr. Hill. He shares all emotions so honestly that it can be painful to read, but valuable also.
I received an advance copy from the publisher via NetGalley for my voluntary, honest review!
This is a powerful memoir – filled with detail, honesty, and raw pain. Personally, I did not get a chance to finish the book – and that's partially my own fault: when I requested it, I did not realize it was a memoir. I have to be in a very specific mindset in order to read memoirs, and now is not the time for me. That being said, even without finishing it, I can tell how powerful this piece is – and it made me feel strong enough to tell my own story one day. So thank you, Jamison Hill, for that.
This is a difficult book for me to rate. Jamison Hill is a skillful writer and storyteller who has written a brutally honest memoir about surviving a traumatic car accident and PTSD, only to develop ME/CFS, a debilitating chronic illness. I have to give kudos to the author for sharing such intimate details of his life so vividly. However, this was a very unpleasant read for me, so I can’t personally rate this higher than 3 stars.
If you want to learn what it can be like to live with ME/CFS or any other devastating chronic illness, this is a good choice. Just be prepared to read some very disturbing scenes, and know that there isn’t much of a happy ending here.
As someone who is also living with PTSD and disabling chronic illnesses, I have been through some similar experiences and I could relate to some of what the author describes. However, I was uncomfortable with both the author’s self-destructive behavior, and his reluctance to be honest with others. It’s so painful to watch him exacerbate his own problems. He does eventually overcome both of those tendencies, but for much of the book, I couldn’t help thinking that this is a guy I would not want to interact with. I was also disturbed by his lack of compassion for a cat in his care.
I mostly read for pleasure and as an escape from the difficulties of my own life, so this just didn’t work for me. However, I hope that it helps bring more awareness to ME/CFS.
Having a disabling chronic illness can be very isolating, and sometimes it feels like no one else understands what it’s like. If you’re experiencing that, then this book might help.
I was provided an unproofed ARC through NetGalley that I volunteered to review.
When Force Meets Fate is an incredibly honest account of living with a debilitating chronic illness. At the start of his story Jamison is a healthy and athletic college student. What follows is years of mysterious symptoms and even worse a diagnosis that people don’t understand enough to truly understand what Jamison is going through. Reading Jamison’s memoir makes you appreciate any and every bit of health you take for granted. Parts of this memoir were hard to read and Jamison eloquently sums up the reason in his last paragraph; people like stories with a nice ending because it gives us hope. The truth is much harder to hear.
Thank you to NetGalley and Inkshares for the ARC of this memoir.

When Force Meets Fate by Jamison Hill
I got this as an ARC from NetGalley. This doesn’t affect my review.
A while after a car accident, Jamison gets mononucleosis. After that for a while, his life just goes downhill. He used to lift 400 pounds as a bodybuilder, now he can’t lift a water glass. He quit his job because he was so sick and had to move in with his parents. With so few doctors specializing in his diagnosis of chronic fatigue syndrome, he had to try all sorts of things. Finally, a doctor managed to find a combo of meds that helped some. Will he live or will he die? Read When force meets Fate by Jamison Hill.
Things I didn’t like

This is told by the author as his personal journey through a debilitating chronic illness that was not diagnosed correctly by doctors and kept him bed ridden for years. It is a very moving emotional read. Any of us with chronic illness that struggle with doctors incompetence and years of useless medical advice in America's very lacking field of western medicine can relate to this heartfelt journey. The author is very brave to tell his story in such a honest way and i applaud his efforts here in reaching out through his words. Thank you to the author and to Net Galley for the opportunity. My review opinion is my own.
Jamison Hill brings us an incredible memoir that sheds light on his experience with an "invisible illness." Jamison's story makes you consider your own life, change your perspective. It was told almost in diary format. While it made it easy to read, it was also sort of eerie knowing someone's thoughts so intimately.
I have so much respect for Jamison - I truly don't think I could've been near as positive if I were to have the same experience. Thank you so much to NetGalley and Inkshares for allowing me to read and review this book, and thank you to Jamison Hill for sharing your story! Your light will shine on and this book will stick with me for a while. I hope more people read this so we can all have a better understanding of the experiences of individuals with chronic illnesses.
A very good memoir about a man who goes from being a 22 year old student and body builder to an invalid over a sort period of time eventually becoming totally bedridden for over two years. Jamison was eventually diagnosed with chronic fatique syndrome with possibly underlying Lyme disease. This chronicles his search for a diagnosis, the doctors he encounters and his relationships. This is a very moving discourse on a little understood disease. I found his problems well written, unflinchingly honest and understandable.
Thank you to NetGalley and Inkshares for a copy of this book in exchange for my honest opinion.
When Force Meets Fate by Jamison Hill is a powerful memoir of his experiences of a decade-long battle with chronic illness. Jamison was a competitive bodybuilder while he attended college. He worked out for hours and pushed his body as far as it would go...until it was too far. Jamison experienced a rapid decline in health that was unexplainable. He had to drop out of college, move back in with his mom and he lost any romantic relationships he tried to pursue. He went to several doctors who misdiagnosed his condition while he got worse and suffered. Finally, Jamison was diagnosed with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome/Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (CFS/ME) when his symptoms didn't resolve after several years. A doctor explained that Jamison's symptoms were likely brought on by the Epstein-Barr Virus (EBV) which is in the same family as mononucleosis. Jamison continues to struggle with CFS/ME, but has improved enough to write this book to document his journey. It's an incredible story of perseverance and positivity and a great platform for advocacy of invisible illnesses. Jamison Hill's writing is descriptive and evocative. Look for this on 1.26.21.
Thank you for the advanced copy.
A truly inspiring book. An honest and beautifully written account of living with ME/CFS. I could not put it down.
This book provides an insider's look at a lesser known chronic debilitating disorder. In my humble opinion, physicians-in-training or even general practitioners should read this book to gain some insights into properly diagnosing disorders based on patient's descriptions of their symptoms.
Jamison Hill's autobiography does a wonderful job of telling his perspective of events, mainly as they unfold, and allowing others into his world. I applaud him for all the effort he put into sharing it with others.
Thank you InkShares and NetGalley for allowing me the opportunity to get a glimpse into Jamison's world. I hope in some small way, my review will help others gain wisdom as well as compassion for those with seemingly invisible disorders.
A beautifully written account of a life lived in a way no-one could imagine living. Jamison describes his life so vividly that it is impossible not to feel part of the horror and the triumphs. He is a gifted writer and a warm and engaging person - with an incredible mother.
I received an advance copy of, When Force Meets Fate, by Jamison Hill. This is an incredible story, of a man who had it all, took care of himself, gets an awful illness, and is never the same. Its sad that it takes so long, to get the right diagnosis. Its to common.
