This one was so full of angst and sadness. Seldom do I read a book that keeps me glued to it so strongly.
When a bomber is found to have set a bomb that takes an entire family in one way or the other there is a connection to Dave's old life.
I received this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
In the 10th book in Detective Kane and Sheriff Alton’s book they, along with the FBI agents, are trying to find a killer who has exploded a house killing the parents and one of their daughters. With the other twelve year old daughter is missing the team of Kane and Alton along with the FBI agents need to find her before the killer does.
Promises in the dark is a nonstop action packed thriller by D.K.Hood. Another 5 star read for me and cannot wait to read the next one in the series.
I would like to thank Bookouture & NetGalley for providing an ARC of this book in exchange for my honest and fair review.
Couldn't stop reading! This series is one of my must reads and I'm never disappointed. I look forward to each new case and catching up with the team again.
The SUV explodes in a ball of fire, killing three people of the Woods family inside. The surviving teenage daughter watches from inside another care, her hands and feet are bound. The driver only laughs.
Days later, Sophie Wood's body is found in a pool of water, better known as Dead Man's Drop.
When Detective Jenna Alton and her Deputy David Kane investigate, they find nothing at the scene to point a finger at anyone who could possibly be responsible.
Investigating the family's past, Alton finds a link between the killer and someone connected to her deputy. If Alton is right, then Kane is in danger ... and it's much closer than they think.
And then another girl is taken ....
Full of suspense, forensic knowledge, and detail to safety, this is well-written with characters that stand out. There are a few twists and turns and a short visit to Kane's past. The conclusion comes fast and furious and is completely surprising.
Many thanks to the author / Bookouture / Netgalley for the digital copy of this crime fiction. Read and reviewed voluntarily, opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.
Hard to believe we are now on Book 10 in what can only be described as an amazing series, I thoroughly enjoyed/enjoy each and every instalment…. I love being back in Black Rock Falls and following Kane & Alton on another adventure chasing down yet another serial killer!
FBI agents Joe Wells and Ty Carter are back to help out, this case has turned personal for Kane and he must confront the demons from his past head on. Another rollercoaster of a read which will keep you gripped to the edge of your seat and your mind spinning.
Nothing can get my pulse racing like a case in Black Rock Falls. Jenna & Kane always seem to have the meanest SOB terrorizing their town & dropping victims left, right & center. This murderer though is special. He may be connected to a case related to Kane making it personal for him.
I loved every moment of this highly addictive book & found it difficult to keep it down. There were some chapters that had me turning the pages like crazy. Having read all the previous books in the series I've come to like all of them & it was absolutely nerve wracking to see a few of them face danger & death up so close. Offcourse that also added to the thrill of reading. D.K. Hood's villains always surpass the previous in brutality & the one in this book was no different. Its always fascinating to see Alton, Kane & Wolfe working the case to see it to its end. It got even better with FBI agents Jo & Carter. Even with the many characters in the book it wasn't difficult to keep up with the storyline. The author, Hood sets in each book in such an atmospheric way - its riveting & gives me the chills. Always! With the sheer number of deviants targeting this idyllic small town since book #1 I know it is a statistical anomaly but somehow with the compelling storylines written by D.K.Hood i always fall hook, line & sinker. I can't wait to next & hope to catch more of the heebis jeebies in the next book with Alton & Kane. I know this is one series that is very difficult to dissapoint.
Thank you, NetGalley, Bookouture & D.K.Hood for an arc!
I can’t believe that this is the tenth book in the series featuring Sheriff Jenna Alton and Deputy Dave Kane and this one certainly didn’t disappoint. We are reintroduced to FBI Agents Jo Wells and Ty Carter who we met in previous books, as they need Jenna’s and Dave’s help to solve a case. They are investigating an explosion which ripped through a household where they discovered the bodies of a family. They realised that the bodies had been restrained before the explosion and that their teenage daughter was missing, probably abducted by the killer. They soon make connections between the explosives used on the house and ones used in a previous bombing that killed Kane’s wife. The body of the abducted girl turns up in one of the local lakes which leads them to believe that she had been held in some caves. When another girl is abducted and her body found it is a race against time to find this serial killer and rapist. This fast paced plot made gripping reading and had me guessing the identity of the killer right until the end. Love this series and can’t wait for the next book in the series.
Thanks to Netgalley and Bookouture for giving me the opportunity to read and review this book.
I am really enjoying this series, it get better with each new book. It's a great read and once I started reading I didn't want to stop. Looking forward to reading more in this series
It was the first book I read in this series and I'm wondering why I didn't read the others.
A gripping, well plotted and entertaining story that kept me on the edge till the last page.
Excellent plot and character development, a solid mystery and good storytelling.
I can't wait to read the next one, this one is highly recommended.
Many thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for this ARC, all opinions are mine
A well written story that blows you away with its unique suspense and characters that is going to blow you away highly recommended.
Thankyou to NetGalley, Bookouture and the author, D K Hood, for the opportunity to read a digital copy of Promises *n The Dark in exchange for an honest and unbiased opinion.
I have read every book in the Detectives Kane and Alton series. I think they just get better and better.
The premise of the storyline promises so much and it delivers. The characters are well defined and mesh well together. The storyline was well written and easy to follow. Very enjoyable read. 3.5 stars.
Worth a look.
It’s hard to believe that this is book ten of the Kane and Alton series! By now, they’re like old friends that I check in on to see what what’s happening in their neck of the woods. I’m never disappointed. As always, I enjoy the depth that the author puts into the characters. They’re all “real” people with logistically sound backgrounds that sometimes have direct bearing on current events. The term that keeps coming to mind whenever I read and review one of the books in this series is how realistic everything is. Yes, the bad guy is bad, but he also has dimension. Yes, the investigators solve the crime, but they’re not perfect. Suffice to say that it’s another great entry in the series. For a detailed review, please visit Fireflies and Free Kicks. Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture for a digital ARC of the book.
This series is well established and by far one of my favourites, so I had been eagerly anticipating this latest instalment for quite some time.
Detective Jenna Alton and her team are called out to a family home that had been burnt to the ground. Whilst investigating, they discover three bodies which are charred, and then realise that one of the daughters from this family unit is in fact missing. As a search begins to locate her, several days later they discover her body.
And then, before they can fully begin their investigation, another house is set alight, and it becomes apparent that these are no accidents at all.
This was such an incredibly fast paced, heart racing story that had me well and truly captivated from the start. The characters are well developed, and you seem to learn more about them with each book. The plot was perfectly paced and kept you guessing until the very end. A page turner for certain!. And I thoroughly look forward to future books within this series.
Another great book in this series
Detective Jenna Alton and her team are called to the charred remains of a family home there is three charred bodies in the remains they soon find out that one of the daughters is missing. A search is put out for her but days later a body is found and it is hers..
Before the get anywhere with the investigation another home is destroyed .
Can they catch the killer before they strike again.
Can’t wait for the next in the series.
Thanks NetGalley
This was my first book of 2021 and it's going to be a hard act to follow that's for sure the bar has been set and it's high!
I can't quite believe this is the first time I have had the pleasure of reading a book by this author it certainly won't be the last.
This is clearly a series but that did not effect my enjoyment of the book having said that I think it would have enhanced my reading experience to have had the background info but I can catch up.
A high class thrilling explosive crime read
Wonderful detailed characters (especially the dogs) a passionate, intense, detailed, gruesome, delicious read it really has it all.
Had me gripped you get very invested in finding the suspect and wanting justice for the horrific suffering of the victims.
This left me wanting more and I am defiantly adding this to my top reads!
Again the team are chasing a serial killer. This time the FBI called them in as consultants. I like this team approach. Both strong female leads who each know their area of expertise.
For a small town, a lot of killers visit. Or as the last book taught us, they have heard of Jenna's expertise and arrive in town to challenge her. But not in this book either. This series is so well written and the minor characters are being developed they feel like family.
When the deputy's new wife breaks down I assumed the killer would pick her up. Every interaction in this series has the potential for the baddies to win. That is what keeps me reading!
I think this series will now become one of my top favorite series. Detectives Kane and Alton have become a part of my family along with the rest of their team. In the 10th book in the series we finally get to the case that brought Kane to Black Rock Falls. Someone is killing families and the killer's signature looks a lot like the one from D.C. years earlier. FBI agents Jo Wells and Ty Carter are back to help along with Carter's bomb canine, Zorro. I haven't been able to put this series down since I started it and was excited when Netgalley gave me the chance to read and review the newest installment. You definitely won't be disappointed if you love a good detective novel.
Oh my life what an opening!!! Horrific doesn’t go far enough and this tenth Black Rock Falls thriller doesn’t let up!!
Because of the location of this jaw dropping opener, Promises In The Dark brings to the forefront the partnership of Jo Wells and Ty Carter, the FBI agents I’ve got to know over the last couple of books. Only this time it feels Carter wants to prove something with his attitude to my favourite sheriff’s department. Thankfully Jenna is having none of it!
As the story goes on, the nutter causing all the problems starts to get nuttier and the Black Rock Falls team is desperate for results. Desperate to prevent more loss of life. But they’re up against it when they meet the locals of Louan who have some rather outdated views on life. I am just so thankful it’s them and not me dealing with these antiquated beliefs.
“It’s the psychopaths who believe this part of the world is a killer’s playground.”
I love the way the author acknowledges through her characters the crazy murder rates of Black Rock Falls. Hood has done it a few times in the series and it never ceases to make me smile to read the quips in such dark and twisted stories.
Yet again, the new addition to the Kane and Alton family is another fine one. For me, it ticked all the boxes (and more) of a crime thriller I have come to expect from the keyboard of Hood. Bring On Book 11!!!
This is such a fantastic series. Each book can technically be read as a stand alone but each character has so much background information I think it’s best to read them in order. Kane’s past comes up in this book and we get to find out more about his late wife and experience his grief all over again.
I think my favourite thing about this series is there are so many amazing characters and we get to know them all. Jenna is a bit of a weird one and sometimes annoys me but all in all they are probably my favourite team to read. Unfortunately I did guess who the bad guy was as I found some of the hints a bit obvious. However, it was still a great read and I look forward to more.
I received a copy of the ebook via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review
A teenager is kidnapped while her family are burned to death. Explosives have been used and the FBI are called in due to a link to a previous bombing in DC: the one that killed Kane's wife. Can he stay professional and catch the killer who is determined to murder innocents...
Promises in the Dark in the 10th book in the Kane and Alton series. It would work as a standalone book but I think the character development and details in the previous books improve the reading experience.
The personal involvement of Kane in the case reminds us of the sadness he has been carrying: the murder of his wife has haunted him and now he needs to confront the past. This adds a layer of emotion that is more pronounced than in other books in the series.
The FBI characters we have been introduced to previously return in this book. Jenna struggles with outdated attitutudes towards women from both her colleages and suspects which adds a tension to the plot.
As well as the murders which are quite graphically described in forensic detail, there are rapes but these are not shown to the reader. Some of the scenes are quite horrific but the writing is so compelling that I found Promises in the Dark impossible to put down.
I had no idea of the culprit so enjoyed the exploration of the suspects' motives. There are some chapters written from the killer's perspective but no clues are given away!
