A cozy book indeed. Unfortunately I don't seem to enjoy cozy murder mysteries but I can't deny how well written this was. From the characters to the locations, I could see everything in my mind as I read. I went back and forth for a bit on whether to give this a 2 or a 3 but I felt with how much of an easy read it was, it at least deserved a 3. The middle dragged on a bit and I felt that the book could have had a bit cut out but then there really wouldn't have been much left. For anyone who enjoys cozy mysteries, I highly recommend because even though I'm not a fan of them, this was the best one I've read.
This was a nice cozy mystery! The mystery was light and predictable! However, I thought that the setting was wonderful! This was really a pleasant Christmas story!
The author takes you right into the world they have created, bringing such colour to the characters and the setting that the story itself is almost like an added bonus. I love strong dialogue and well developed relationships and this book offers both. A must for those who enjoy the Miss Fischer mysteries.
Wow, what a fantastic read. Variety Bright does it again. This was such a great book with relatable people. Intrigue and mystery, keep you on the edge of your seat. The author grabs your attention at page one and keeps it all the way to the end. This is such a page turner that you can’t put it down. If you haven’t discovered Variety Bright, I highly suggest you read this book, and I assure you that she will be your new favorite author!!
this is becoming one of my favorite cozy series. This is book 4 in the Lady Eleanor Swift series and it upholds the great writing and humorous repartee between Lady Elanor and her butler, Clifford. Also back for the fun is Gladstone the pug and detective Sheldon. The entire village come to Henley Hall for a Christmas feast. Tradition for 1920's England. But when a guest drops dead and then the village vicar gets ill people are starting to wonder what Eleanor did to the food. Great read, can be read as a stand alone but the entire series is enjoyable. I received a copy of this ARC in exchange for a fair and honest review.
Lady Eleanor Swift hosts festive celebrations for the villagers at her home. Sudden death and subsequent poisoning mean Eleanor needs to solve the mystery to clear her name. The suspects are plentiful, but Eleanor Clifford and the inimitable Gladstone use all their newly acquired investigative skills to solve this festive mystery.
The characters are, as always, with this series vibrant and likeable. There are clues to the series' overarching mystery about Eleanor's parents and a few romantic interludes too.
This is a lovely mystery for a cold winter's afternoon.
I received a copy of this book from Bookouture via NetGalley in return for an honest review.
A believable and sympathetic heroine
Loyal servants
Bit of a love interest
What more can I ask from a cozy mystery. Good story, well told.
I absolutely adore the Lady Eleanor Swift Mystery series, so was hugely excited to start on this one!.
returning to Henley Hall and being reacquainted with the characters in which we have grown to love throughout this series was fantastic. This visit took us there at Christmas time, and whilst enjoying the festivities, another murder takes place.
I loved this story! We seem to learn more about the main cast of characters every time we visit them, and their personalities develop. The storyline, as always, is so well plotted that it has the perfect levels of suspense, mystery, and drama that really keeps you fully immersed in the tale to the very end.
An amazing read which I powered through within a day!.
Murder In The Snow by Verity Bright
An English Christmas story that has mince pies, cheerful carols, a decorated tree and murder. Thank goodness Lady Swift is on the scene.
This was a typical British mystery cozy. Lady Swift sh0wed that she had a keen mind for solving murders. It had many friendly characters, although there were a few bad ones. This book was very enjoyable and festive.
Thanks to Net Galley for sending me an advanced reader’s copy for my review.
Murder In The Snow is a thoroughly enjoyable Christmassy cosy murder mystery. It is the fourth in the Lady Eleanor Swift series, although the first one I have read so far. It was perfectly easy to pick this up as a stand alone story and I didn’t feel I was missing too much.
Verity Bright throws us straight into the Christmas festivities at Henley Hall, bringing to life a traditional picture postcard white Christmas, with 1920s food, decorations, activites and games, before murder threatens to ruin the big day. Some of the writing felt to me a little modern for the period, but overall, the narrative is very readable and jolly, with a witty turn of phrase.
Lady Eleanor is a charming leading lady – ably supported by her worth-his-weight-in-gold butler, Clifford, occasionally hindered by Gladstone the bulldog, and often to be found sparring with handsome DCI Seldon – with her own interesting history. With so many people around at the time of the murder, Ellie has quite a selection of suspects and potential motives to consider before solving the mystery as well as dealing with some new information about her own family mystery.
Murder in the Snow is the perfect book to cosy up with during this cold weather, second lockdown and pre-Christmas period. I will definitely be reading the earlier books in the series. Thank you to Bookouture for my copy of the book and my spot on the tour.
In typical fashion for a cozy mystery, Lady Eleanor Swift gets yet another chance to prove her excellent skills when it comes to proving that a man's recent death is due to more than natural causes. It is a busy time during the Christmas season during the winter of 1920. One of the activities at play is a race that seemingly went off without a hitch However, as the runners approach the finish line, one of them suddenly falls to the ground.
Resuscitation efforts prove futile as it immediately proves that the man that fell is indeed dead. A heart attack perhaps? Ellie highly doubts it and becomes quite determined to find the cause of death. When the local vicar falls ill with a case of apparent poison, Ellie feels that both situations are linked. Ellie refuses to back down and begins to recognize clues that prove her suspicions are correct. Time proves to be of the essence when she herself comes into the line of blame.
I loved this fourth story in the Lady Eleanor Swift Mystery series. Between her faithful butler Clifford and her perfect canine companion Gladstone, Ellie proves more than adept at turning over clues when it comes to getting to the truth behind the events that have taken place. With a bevy of suspects, her efforts prove rather difficult, but the skills Ellie has learned when it comes to solving crimes work well when it comes to finding the killer, keeping her name clear and staying safe.
The Christmas season is soon to be among us, so why not grab this delightful story and settle down for what proves to be quite a cozy read. I enjoyed the twists and turns that this story took and found myself devouring this book in a single reading session. This delightful story is a great accompaniment to a wonderful series and I look forward to seeing what is next in store for Ellie, Clifford and Gladstone.
Many thanks to Bookouture and to NetGalley for this ARC for review. This is my honest opinion.
It was delightful to return to Henley Hall and meet Lady Eleanor Swift and the whole gang of quirky and witty residents once again and this time there was a Henley Hall Christmas bash to enjoy as well! Then there is yet another murder which this time occurs at Henley Hall during the festivities but Eleanor doesn't let that dampen the spirit of the season while she and her sleuthing partner/ butler in demand Clifford once again put their combined investigative skills to good use to solve the crime. I am also very hopeful for Eleanor and Detective Seldon….this is a pairing I am rooting for. As for Gladstone....ufff he is a force on four paws to reckon with! What a character!
My thanks to NetGalley, the publisher Bookouture and the author Verity Bright for the e-Arc of the book. I had finished reading this book in one day in December itself and I apologise for putting up a late review.
The book was published on 19th November 2020.
I really enjoy this series featuring Lady Eleanor Swift. The characters are engaging and the murder mystery is always a good one with many twists and turns.
I like that Lady Eleanor is trying to find her way after inheriting the estate from her uncle and that her staff are like her family and she is dedicated to them and they to her. The relationship between her and the butler Clifford is especially sweet.
The setting at Christmas adds another layer of charm.
Lady Eleanor Swift discovers a Murder in the Snow at Christmas time. She and Clifford her butler decide to find out whodunit since it was very like the murder of her uncle. Full of red herrings. Swift pace. Good historical mystery in a British village.
I truly enjoyed this cozy mystery as it takes place in an English manor during the Christmas holidays. The Lady of the Manor, Ellie, is a young and delightful niece of the recently deceased uncle who was Lord of the Manor before he left it to her. His staff adored him and have a wonderful relationship with Ellie. Specifically, Clifford, the butler, is her right hand man and a Watson to her Sherlock if ever there was one. The murder is clever and implicates quite a few of the townspeople. If you want to travel back to 1920 England and discover whodunnit, this wonderful mystery is for you! Thank you to NetGalley and to Bookoutoure for the opportunity to review this advanced copy.
Murder in the Snow is the fourth book in the Eleanor Swift mystery series and thankfully can be read as a standalone. The story, set in the winter of 1920, follows Eleanor as she plays host to the entire village, bringing everyone together for Christmas celebrations. What she does not expect is for one of the contestants to collapse and be declared dead from a possible heart-attack. As her investigative instincts kick in, Eleanor starts to figure the whole thing out when her butler agrees that it seems suspicious.
There are minimal references to her adventures and previous mysteries solved, but these do not take away from the story, nor do they create any confusion for the reader! With a lot happening in the book, the reader is in for unexpected surprises as Eleanor proceeds with her investigation, many times in the most unladylike manner for the 1920s. However, this just adds to her endearing character and makes the reader fall in love with her. The other characters in the book are charming and the best is Mr. Clifford! I adore how he handled the house and supported Eleanor in spite of just being her butler. His connection to her late uncle seems to add some intrigue to his character.
The story is very well-written and mixed in with festive cheer. I enjoyed reading about how the people amused themselves in this rather picturesque setting. This murder mystery is definitely worth the read and I look forward to reading more about Eleanor's adventures!
This is my first book from Verity Bright and I must say I enjoyed it. This was so well written that you could easily feel as though you were caught up in the story. The cast of characters are a group that I am looking forward to getting to know better.
The 20s come to life as Eleanor and her inherited bulldog, Gladstone take on a new mystery. Getting ready for her first Christmas after inheriting Henley Hall her uncle's
estate in Little Buckford, Buckinghamshire Eleanor wants to continue his traditions.
Everything seems to be going fine until Conrad Canning dies from a heart attack. Doctor Browning and DCI Seldon both believe he died from the heart attack. Nothing more to it but Eleanor isn't so sure of it which means it's time to take matters into her own hands.
Eleanor was simply a wonderful character. She is what I would imagine Ms. Marple would have been like when she was young or if she had a daughter. As I said this such a great read and I would highly recommend it.
As usual this series continues to be amazing. Lady Swift is hosting Christmas at the manor for the local village and all the staff have been preparing for days. During the annual race unfortunately a runner collapses and dies. But is it an accident or more than it seems? Also how does it relate to her beloved Uncle’s death?
I love this series as it just epitomes the interwar period for me and especially this genre. I love a good house mystery and Lady Swift is a great character, fun and feisty, very independent and feminist! Plus all the supporting characters are great - who doesn’t love slobbering bulldog. Bless Gladstone.
The narrative of this book is a great read especially at this time of year. I love a good festive read and ‘Murder In The Snow’ has all the good hallmarks - snow, stuck in the weather, Christmas time and a good murder. I really enjoyed finding out more about Eleanor’s Uncle and the role he played in his community. Still wanting to find out more about her parents though!
A great addition to series and I can’t wait for the next one!
A delightful Christmas cozy mystery, perfect for reading by the fire with a cup of coffee and the snow falling outside as the holidays approach.
I’m new to this series (and now kicking myself for going out of order and starting with book four). I’ll be needing to remedy this by reading the previous installments very soon.
The mystery itself was surprisingly good for a cozy (a solve that actually makes sense! Amazing). The characters are excellent. And the humor and atmosphere are bang on for the genre and a cut above the competition.
I know the publisher is attempting to bill this as a historical mystery series, but that feels like a reach. There’s not a lot of historical context here (even in the domestic or atmospheric sense). Just because a book is set in the past doesn’t make it qualified to be categorized in the historical mystery subgenre.
This one is a cozy through and through. It’s a good (no, VERY good) cozy, but it doesn’t meet the criteria for other mystery subgenres. This is not, for the record, a knock on the series, just a statement of fact about how it needs to be classed.
In all, I thoroughly enjoyed Murder in the Snow and look forward to reading the rest of the series. This one had a legitimate Christmasy feel, a good sense of subtle humor, and sweet but not saccharine relations between the recurring characters.
Thank you to NetGalley for providing an eARC in exchange for an honest review.
I completely adored this cozy- Verity Bright is such a fantastic cozy author! I have enjoyed previous books in the series, but I thought that Bright nailed the festive feeling while continuing on with mysteries. (Many holiday themed books seem to abandon the actual mysteries for the holidays, but not the case.) I also just have to say that I don't know that I've wanted to visit a setting more than Henley Hall, and I might be planning a holiday party in the vein of Lady Eleanor's celebrations (without the dead person). You could read this as a standalone, but I think that if you can read the whole series, it is absolutely worth it- Ellie's growth as a character is phenomenal!
