I started reading this and realised it was part of a series so stopped and read the other books first. I am glad I did as it gave a lot of useful context and history for this book’s characters and events. It’s a thriller, true to form, and I enjoyed the espionage and intrigue.
The end of a series always presents a monumental task to its author. Characters who've grown and altered through their fictional experiences still have to find some meaningful conclusion to arcs dreamed up years earlier. Plot threads may have grown cumbersome as they've undergone numerous mutations to accommodate how the story's shifted as a whole. And maybe you've decided only near the climax of the series that some payoffs need to be altered or abandoned in the interest of avoiding bloat.
I'm happy to say that, as far as I'm concerned, Jordan has navigated these many potential pitfalls most dexterously.
No, not everything gave the catharsis or payoff I was hoping for, but the way Jordan managed to add new layers to protagonists and antagonists alike kept me invested all the way through. And, even if I'm not wholly satisfied with an ending, I do try to commend an author when they've managed to have my feelings mirror those of the characters, come the journey's end.
If you're a spy thriller junkie, absolutely read these books. And, even if you're not, you'll likely enjoy them as much as I have. Which is to say considerably
A cracking action packed story that whizzes along.
A really enjoyable book that will hit the spot for anyone after an action/adventure story.
This is one of those times when i feel like i've lived under a rock my whole life. This book is an amazing thriller and the series sounds so good that i might have to reschedule my reading time because i need to know so much more about these characters and their stories from the previous books.
There aren't many books that i've read that focuses so much on the details to the smallest thing and i could vision every scene like actually being there with them, taking part in the action with the characters and feel all that adrenaline and blood rush with each page turned and twists that come along and blown my mind, especially the ending because that was very unexpected.
A must read thriller.
Something to Die For is the ninth and final instalment in the ex-soldier turned CIA operative Ryan Drake series of espionage thrillers. I'd recommend having read the preceding books in the series before this as there is an overarching plot, frequent references to past characters, events and incidents, and Drake’s backstory is something you will not be privy to otherwise. This is an action-packed, exciting and dangerous end to a riveting series. There is never a dull moment throughout and I found myself completely immersed and engrossed with my heart thumping from the adrenaline-fuelled storyline. The plot moves at rapid-fire pace with many spectacular incidents and a brutal, high-octane cat and mouse game at its centre. The tension builds and is ratcheted up as the narrative progresses culminating in an explosive end scene.
Drawing on extensive research into weapons and tactics, as well as the experiences of men who’ve fought in some of the world’s most daunting combat zones, Jordan writes authentic, richly-detailed epics that grip from start to finish. Full of intrigue and intense drama, I raced through this in a nail-biting few hours, desperate to know how it ended for Drake and his enemies and see if he managed to get all of the answers he was looking for. Packed with all the elements that make up the best thrillers: shady dealings, corruption, conspiracies, intrigue, double-crosses, fights, tonnes of action and the engaging characterisation of Drake, who pleasingly has always been portrayed as flawed and very human rather than indomitable, this is a real page-turning climax to the series. Highly recommended. Many thanks to Canelo for an ARC.
Wow, what a finale to a great series of books!
As you can tell from that first sentence this book is part of a series featuring the character of Nick Drake. This book should ideally be read after reading the previous ones in the series as it does refer to past events quite frequently. If you were to try reading this with no previous knowledge you could possibly follow it, but the investment in the characters would be difficult as the story assumes for the most part that you have read the full series.
This novel has twists, turns, double crosses and even triple crosses in getting to the final pages. The action starts off at a slower pace to try and get the reader back on the hook, then gradually increases the pacing until the action becomes non-stop in the final act.
If you are a lover of action thrillers, in the mould of Vince Flynn or David Baldacci, then this book is right up your street.
(Note: I have intentionally not puts summary of the plot in this review due to not wanting to put any spoilers in)
Excellent read, and I'm grateful for NetGalley providing an ARC for me to review.
